The CEO of Amazon's most profitable unit explains how it’s putting pressure on companies like Oracle (AMZN, ORCL)

The CEO of Amazon's most profitable unit explains how it’s putting pressure on companies like Oracle (AMZN, ORCL) In the ten years since Amazon Web Services officially launched, it's become a $10 billion business — making it both Amazon's most profitable unit and the one to beat in the mega-hot cloud computing market.

But it's also been bad news for legacy technology vendors like Oracle, Dell/EMC, and Cisco, as customers increasingly turn to Amazon, along with competitors like Microsoft and Google, to outsource their existing data center infrastructure.

On stage today at an Amazon event in Washington DC, newly-named Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy lays out the three factors that have led customers away from the old guard of technology vendors and into its cloud.

Those three factors, according to Jassy, are:

1. *"We are an extraordinarily customer-focused company." *Where legacy tech companies are "competitor-focused" or "product-focused," Jassy says, Amazon Web Services spends 90% of its time doing what customers want, and the other 10% doing what customers need but can't articulate.
2. *"We are pioneers and inventors." *Amazon Web Services is always working on the next big thing, ensuring customers can come for the ride. Meanwhile, Jassy says, the old tech companies "have lost their will or their way to invent."
3. *"We're really long-term oriented." *Jassy says that they'd rather take a short-term hit to profits in order to ensure long-term customer relationships. AWS salespeople will never call on the last day of the quarter with a special deal just to goose their numbers. In fact, Jassy says, if you're not using all of the Amazon Web Services capacity you've paid for, they'll get in touch so you can lower your rate plan — which has resulted in $350 million in lost revenue.

"We're trying to build a business that will outlast all of us in this room," Jassy says.

Still, Amazon has gleefully taken advantage of the migration away from older tech vendors, with promotions specifically targeted to get Oracle customers to move their databases to Amazon Web Services.

On stage, Jassy couldn't resist taking a few shots at Oracle, mentioning a few times that putting your databases Amazon Web Services offers a lot more flexibility and choice than the company that Larry Ellison built — since customers on AWS can use Amazon's own Aurora, or any of the other databases supported by the platform.

"You're going to get a lot more database freedom," Jassy says.

Political Cash And Filibuster Rules Conspire To Prevent Gun Safety Laws

$

The failure of the U.S. Congress to pass any meaningful gun-safety legislation in the wake of mass shootings is driven by far more than the heavily covered left-right ideological split in both our country and our U.S. House and Senate. This unremitting failure to legislate is also the result of rules that allow for structural defects to exist in Congress - defects that thwart the will of an overwhelming majority of the American people.

To be clear, the sickening crime in Orlando did not happen because of a single problem. We have already seen the evidence of a confluence of causes, as is often the case. But this mass shooting did, once again, focus the spotlight back on the gun debate - and it is worth examining in deeper terms than the stale, red-blue political conflict that plays out on TV like an old rerun. The excerpt below from Chapter 6 of Unlock Congress zeroes in on the issue of gun safety and how a sclerotic Congress has been unable to act. Specifically, the focus is placed on the "money flood" in our system, as well as the filibuster rules that require 60 votes in the U.S. Senate for legislation to be voted upon - a requirement that is an accident of history and nowhere to be found in the U.S. Constitution. This article was excerpted from Chapter 6 of Unlock Congress: Reform the Rules - Restore the System
Each year the U.S. records approximately thirty thousand gun-related deaths - by far the largest per-capita average in the world, which only intensifies what has always been a heated debate in our country. Of all issues, it might be most difficult to wring some of the politics out of this one. But we're going to try to examine it logically, in our ongoing effort to understand the role that problematic rules play in the policy process.

Law-abiding American gun owners fight to protect their right to bear arms. That right was first established in the Second Amendment: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." The extent of this right has been debated in the public square and in the courts ever since. The right of an individual to own a firearm was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2008. But within the ruling, speaking for the majority, Justice Antonin Scalia also wrote that nothing in the Court's decision "cast doubt on long-standing prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings." Essentially, the Court had affirmed the right while also maintaining Congress's power to pass forms of gun legislation intended to increase public safety.

Americans on the side of stricter gun laws argue that the original constitutional right was specifically intended for state militias. The purpose in establishing this right was for the state to be capable of defending itself against oppression, which made perfect sense after a Revolutionary War had been fought and won to reject such oppression. Although the ultimate goal of some gun control advocates may be to limit the use and ownership of guns back to militias (as former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens favors), the more active efforts are geared toward passing laws that they say will reduce gun violence. Even many gun control advocates will acknowledge that these efforts have not made enough headway in recent years.

Frequent mass shootings in American towns always have the effect of spotlighting anew the gun issue. Discussions usually zero in on efforts to pass laws requiring tougher background checks or to ban assault-style weapons or high-capacity magazines. The familiar scenario played out again in the summer of 2012 when a mentally ill man named James Holmes shot and killed twelve people in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. He wounded fifty-eight others. The debate restarted. Only two days later, before any new legislation had even been proposed, U.S. Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) made this announcement on NBC's Meet The Press: "A lot of politicians know it's the right thing to try to fight for something to save lives. They don't have the spine anymore. They pander to who's giving them money."

McCarthy was right in the sense that Congress would end up passing no new laws to increase gun safety in the aftermath of Aurora. The real question is: Was she right about why? Was it because our politicians are "spineless" and "pandering" for the money? Or have our leaders just been representing the will of the people?

A better case for examining those questions came one year later following the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-year-old Adam Lanza, another killer with a history of mental illness, walked into the Sandy Hook Elementary School fully armed and took the lives of six adults and twenty children. Even with all of the gun violence we see in the U.S., the murder of so many innocent children in this tragedy brought an even greater level of attention to the gun issue.

It also created enough political will for Congress to at least introduce new legislation. After one Senate bill failed (it would have mandated criminal background checks on all gun sales between private parties), a more modest amendment was proposed with bipartisan co-sponsors, U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA). Manchin explained on Fox News that the measure would merely be a "criminal and mental background check strictly at gun shows and online sales" and that "if you're a law-abiding gun owner, you'll love this bill."

Americans agreed to a great extent with Manchin and Toomey. Two weeks before the vote, a CBS/New York Times poll indicated that 90 percent of Americans supported expanded background checks. Moreover, the same poll showed that 85 percent of households with a gun-owning member of the NRA supported requiring background checks for private sales at gun shows. One comparison of polls sarcastically indicated background checks were more popular than baseball, apple pie, and kittens.

On April 17, 2013, the amendment failed in the Senate. Whether one is for or against the proposed law, the point here is to ask why. If American gun owners (85 percent) were in favor of the amendment, why would our government not respond accordingly? Some believe it is because the NRA and Gun Owners of America are more successful at getting their members to actually voice their opinions to lawmakers. But research released by the Pew Center a month after the vote did not track with that claim. Pew did find another factor, however, stating that "while nearly as many gun control supporters as gun rights supporters report contacting a public official about gun policy in the past six months, more gun rights advocates have contributed money to organizations that take positions on gun policy (12 percent versus 3 percent of gun control supporters)." Ah, the money.

Between the years 2000 and 2014, gun rights groups spent more than $80 million on federal campaigns - with $46 million of it spent by those independent groups given free rein after the Citizens United decision. More than $18 million alone was spent during the election cycle preceding Newtown. Of the forty-six senators who voted against the amendment, forty-three of them had received money from gun rights groups since the year 2000 (gun rights groups outspent gun control groups 28-1 in 2000-2010). Despite such strong circumstantial evidence of influence, that does not necessarily constitute a direct causal link. In fact, four Democrats who voted against background checks were likely unswayed by money, as they had received some of the smallest amounts from the NRA.

But influence comes not only from the NRA money that flows into lawmakers' coffers. It also comes from the truckloads of cash that loom over incumbents in the form of election-cycle attack ads. In fact, even the mere threat of such influence infects political thinking. Lee Drutman, who studies the impact of money on gun policy for the Sunlight Foundation, says lawmakers are plain afraid of the predatory political attacks: "They know what the NRA is capable of doing and the kinds of ads they're capable of running, and especially if you're someone facing a close election, you don't want hundreds of thousands and potentially millions of dollars in advertising to go against you."

Still, if we theoretically assume that gun cash played only a partial role in the defeat, what other possible factor in the "D.C. 4-3" could have flexed its muscle to turn back the will of the majority? The vote tally tells the tale. On that Wednesday afternoon, the background check amendment failed in the Senate by a vote of fifty-four in favor versus forty-six against. An hour later, another popular amendment to make gun trafficking illegal failed by a vote of fifty-eight in favor versus forty-two against. Under the principle of majority rule, both of these majority vote totals would have meant success for the proposed legislation. But as we know, in today's U.S. Senate, without a super-majority to bypass the filibuster, there's just no chance.

Four days after the vote, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin aptly described the connection between these two problems: "That structural Senate, given the sixty votes that are needed, given who they listen to, given the power of special interest - public sentiment cannot penetrate. And we've seen it now for the last decade. That's what the dysfunction is about."

These filibuster rules not only stop progress or slow it down to a crawl, they also violate the principle of majority rule. For both of these reasons, bold action must be taken to restore a measure of order and stability to the U.S. Senate.

6 Reasons Why "All Lives Matter" Is Neither Fair Nor Helpful

$
0
0
One week: Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Dallas.  Finally, the number of White people moved to action against racism is reaching a tipping point, yet tired clichés like “violence isn’t the answer” and “we must unite” threaten to keep us stuck.  “All lives matter” is perhaps the kindest and least helpful of these clichés, to the point of being dangerous.  Here are six reasons why, followed by three concrete actions that are helpful.

*All Lives Matter focuses on what should be. Black Lives Matter focuses on what is*.  Everyone (with 892 exceptions) wants racism to be over.  The belief that Black people are being divisive or complaining unjustifiably about racism and violence is bigoted, because it assumes Black folks are either lazy with nothing better to do than whine, or incapable of living their lives without a handout.  Black Lives Matter isn’t divisive, it’s responding to and calling out divisions that were already there.  Black Lives Matter isn’t taking us back to the 1960’s, it’s calling out the fact that in many ways Black life is worse than it was in the 1960’s.  These divisions and problems may be new to White people, but that doesn’t make them new.  Just as women are more qualified than men to identify sexism and LGBT people are more qualified than straight people to identify homophobia, people of color are the best qualified to identify racism – not White people.  Our job is to listen to the feedback, take it seriously, and act.

Photo: Chicago Tribune
*All Lives Matter assumes everyone is treated fairly and has the same opportunities for success in life.  Black Lives Matter recognizes that this is not true.*  Black Lives Matter could be called “Black Lives Matter…Too, Like Everyone Else’s.”  We do not treat all lives the same.  Compare how dead soldiers and murdered police are mourned and celebrated compared to murdered African Americans.  Compare how Dylan Roof (the Charleston terrorist for whom police bought Burger King after his arrest) and James Holmes (the Aurora mass murderer) were treated compared to Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, Mike Brown, Freddie Gray, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice and Walter Scott.  None of them killed anyone; some committed no crime at all.

*All Lives Matter focuses on equality and intentions. Black Lives Matter focuses on equity and actual impact.*  These are two subtle but profoundly different approaches to fairness. Equality is centered on one’s own good intentions and treating everyone the same.  Equity is centered on the impact of one’s actions on others, regardless of good intentions.  An equality orientation is kind and good-hearted but inadequate because we live in a complex, diverse society where people – while deeply similar in many ways – have vastly different histories, experiences, beliefs, and needs.  Also, people don’t actually treat each other the same even when we try to.  Abundant research shows that human beings carry unconscious biases that affect our behaviors despite our good intentions and noble values – unless we take concrete actions to counteract them.  If good intentions and focusing on people’s similarities were enough to end racism, it would have already ended.

*Black Lives Matter was created in response to anti-Black racism and violence, and lack of accountability for that violence.  All Lives Matter was created in response to Black Lives Matter – by White supremacists.*  This is likely why Trump supporters have beaten African Americans at rallies while ironically shouting “all lives matter!”  “All lives matter” is code for “White lives matter,” and both are messages that have enjoyed centuries of constant proclamation and reinforcement.  The same cannot be said for Black lives.  No one in the movement is saying only Black lives matter, or that Black lives matter more than White or blue lives, or that White or blue deaths should be sought or celebrated.  There is no shortage of mourning and accountability for the loss of White and blue lives (which, incidentally, have been declining for 35 years).  The same cannot be said for Black lives.  There is no shortage of mechanisms to hold individuals accountable for committing crimes (especially when they’re Black or brown).  The problem Black Lives Matter aims to address is institutional racism in policing and state violence – committed by taxpayer-funded institutions, not individual citizens – for which there is little to no accountability.

*All Lives Matter denies there is a problem by treating African American grievances and deaths at the hands of police as deserved consequences, anomalies, trivialities or lies. Black Lives Matter takes action in the face of Whites’ silence, complacency and dismissiveness.*  As Tyler Huckabee wrote, “all lives matter” is “an attempt to erase an actual crisis under the guise of being fair.” This clever video illustrates how dismissive and ludicrous this is.  It’s deeply insulting and a benefit of White privilege to ignore or explain away what the Black community has been saying for years, as if Black folks have nothing better to do than complain or protest.

*All Lives Matter provides neither effective solutions nor actions to take. Black Lives Matter offers solutions and actions that benefit all Americans committed to democracy, integrity and fairness.*

Deafness and denial aren’t working. White people created the need for Black Lives Matter, and we have the power to eliminate it.  Here’s how:

Swedish Medical Group Clinics Optimize Care Delivery with Automated Patient Flow System

Versus Advantages™ Clinic deployed at three clinics, fourth on the horizon

Traverse City, Mich. and Dayton, Ohio (PRWEB) July 12, 2016

Swedish Medical Group, a network of more than 100 primary care and specialty clinics throughout Washington’s greater Puget Sound area, is meeting increased demand while improving the patient experience, using technology designed to reduce wait times and expedite the patient visit.

“We’re expanding our primary care presence in key communities, where we expect patient volumes to test the limits of our capacity,” says Whitney Hull, RN, BSN, Clinic Administrator at Swedish Renton Primary Care. Indeed, population growth in Washington is booming, ranking fifth in the nation for the number of new residents. “We needed a system that would provide us with real-time data to optimize workflow, reduce wait times, and provide the best possible patient experience.”

In May, Hull’s clinic and the nearby Musculoskeletal Services facility replaced their manual “flags and tags” system with the Versus Advantages™ Clinic patient flow system.

“Now everything is automated,” Hull explains. “We don’t have to flip the flags outside each door, and we don’t have to peer down the hallway to see what’s going on. Electronic whiteboards in our off-stage work area show us everything that’s happening in the clinic.”

Patients, providers and staff wear lightweight locator badges that automatically update the Advantages software, keeping everyone in the know on where patients are, how long they’ve been waiting, who has seen them, and who needs to see them next.

Advantages alerts staff when patients have waited more than 10 minutes, indicates when the patient is ready to see the medical assistant (MA) or provider, and automatically tracks room status, including cuing staff when rooms need to be cleaned.

The third clinic to implement Versus, Swedish Richmond Beach Primary Care, went live on June 6. Sarah Pollard, Clinic Administrator, values the data that Advantages provides. “I truly think this system ultimately helps us deliver on our commitment to patient experience by engaging our care teams in a new way with data that is objective, transparent, consistent and actionable.”

While providing real-time data to assist with workflow in the moment, Advantages Clinic also collects an enormous amount of historical data. Using the Versus Reports Plus™ Analytics software, practice administrators now have previously unavailable analysis on wait times, room utilization, time patients spend with MAs and providers, and more. “I’m looking forward to digging into this data and seeing how we can use it to enhance our processes,” Pollard says.

A fourth Swedish clinic, Bellvue Primary Care in Bellevue, Wash., is currently installing the system. Five other facilities affiliated with Swedish also use Versus: three Pacific Medical Centers clinics and two Providence Health & Services clinics, all serving the Pacific Northwest. The clinics are serviced locally by ATS Facility Systems, a certified Versus System Integrator located in Spokane, Wash.

Attendees of the MGMA 2016 Annual Conference, Oct. 30-Nov. 2 in San Francisco, can learn more about the Versus Advantages Clinic patient flow system in session D03, “Eliminate the Waiting Room,” presented by Cheryl Becker of Aurora Medical Group. Versus will also offer live demonstrations of the system at booth #1013.
