Vice President Joe Biden on Friday made an impassioned plea for a renewed assault weapons ban, saying it was just one step Congress could take to reduce the shootings that claim tens of thousands of lives around the U.S. each year.

"The President and I agree with you," Biden wrote in response to a popular White House petition calling for a ban on AR-15 rifles. "Assault weapons and high-capacity magazines should be banned from civilian ownership."

Biden's remarks come days after the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that claimed 49 lives and injured 53 more. The gunman was armed with a Sig Sauer MCX, a semiautomatic assault-style rifle and a cousin of the highly popular AR-15.

Biden went on to explain that a bill like the 1994 assault weapons ban, a controversial piece of legislation that expired in 2004, was just one step lawmakers could take to address gun violence. He encouraged Congress to work on strengthening background checks for gun purchases, preventing people on terrorist watch lists from buying firearms, tightening restrictions on domestic abusers, ending the freeze on gun violence research and increasing funding for law enforcement agencies to enforce existing gun laws.

"If taking commonsense steps to reduce gun violence had the potential to save even one life, it would be worth doing," Biden wrote. "But it has the potential to save far more than that."

Congress considered some of these provisions in 2013, prompted by the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and introduced other legislation last year, after the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California. None passed.

In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, many lawmakers and their constituents are again demanding action. Earlier this week, Democrats held a filibuster on the Senate floor to force a vote on gun control legislation. Senators are set to vote Monday on four dueling proposals to expand background checks and close the so-called terrorist loophole, all of which are widely expected to fail.

But while recent polling suggests that a majority of Americans once again support an assault weapons ban, some Democratic lawmakers have reportedly been hesitant to include such a measure in forthcoming gun violence legislation. And data suggests that these weapons account for just a small portion of overall gun violence.

The latest round of this debate takes place against a stark backdrop. In seven of the last eight high-profile mass shootings — as well as in earlier incidents in Newtown and Aurora, Colorado — perpetrators used assault-style rifles, which allowed them to fire off numerous devastating rounds in rapid succession.

This month, Americans will show that love is stronger than hate. Millions will take part in celebrations of LGBT pride, and Muslims will fast as they observe the holy month of Ramadan. Just last week, we remembered those gunned down at a Charleston Bible study a year ago--killed by one man, but loved and missed by countless others.

And in the coming days, mourners will attend funerals, memorial services and vigils for loved ones murdered at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, most of whom were gay and Latino.

Undoubtedly, in the weeks to come, the ugly rhetoric about bathroom bills, building walls, and barring people of an entire faith from entering this country will continue. Muslim women who wear the hijab may wonder if that is tantamount to a target.

Patrons of gay establishments may worry, as churchgoers did after Charleston, that sanctuaries where they had felt joy, community and the comfort of being themselves are now unsafe. And no doubt, there will be more gun deaths--an average of 90 people die from gun shots each day in the United States, vastly more than in any other developed country. This is madness.

Republicans acceded to Sen. Chris Murphy's remarkable filibuster last week calling for votes on gun legislation, but then they vowed to defeat the measures. The best hope of addressing America's gun problem lies with the majority of Americans, including gun owners, who support stricter gun regulations.

We must call out the hypocrisy when elected officials offer condolences after gun violence in one breath and defend civilians' right to own weapons of war in the next. With each successive mass shooting, I have grown convinced that a massive civic crusade on the order of the civil rights movement is necessary to force the hands of the gun lobby and their allies in elected offices.

This must end.

The aim of the Orlando attack was to murder people like me, an LGBT American. So this is personal. But gun massacres have also taken place in schools, theaters, malls, churches, synagogues and office buildings. This must be personal for all of us.

We may never fully eradicate the hatred and instability that drove the shooters in Newtown, Aurora, Charleston, San Bernadino and Orlando. But we can and must do two things: take a stand against the hateful rhetoric that is seeping into American life, and address the easy availability of weapons that transforms haters into mass murderers.

Such rhetoric is spilling over from the relative confines of conservative talk radio into the daily discourse of a man seeking the country's highest elected office. Donald Trump's run for the presidency is about stoking hatred and division, without even the pretense of decency. He has mocked and mimicked a reporter's physical disability and exhibited reprehensible misogyny. He has renewed his call to bar Muslims from entering the United States and suggested that President Obama is sympathetic to ISIS. He has promoted the use of violence against peaceful protesters with calls to "beat the crap out of them."

Unfortunately, this ugliness is being mimicked in American life, with chants of "build the wall!" directed toward students from a predominantly Latino school, and with students tormenting classmates from immigrant families by saying they'll be sent "home" if Trump becomes president. One columnist calls it the "Trump effect."

This is alarming, but our public schools also offer hope. They help break down stereotypes and help promote understanding and respect, and celebrate, not demonize, diversity. They're where students know their classmates as their lab partner, the photographer for the yearbook, a Yankees fan and the kid who loves to drop rap verses--rather than simply by their race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality or gender identity.

Our public schools are where children learn that differences aren't bad. Far from it; they are part of the fabric of America, and of life. Our diversity and our work to make America more inclusive, with opportunity and justice for all, are part of what "makes America great."

Americans must stand up against efforts to marginalize certain people and groups. We must reject mass murders as the new normal. We must denounce those who whip up fear and try to turn Americans against each other. We must be our best selves, expanding an ever-widening circle of inclusion, showing greater openness to communities once excluded. There is a role for all of us in this--working to change not only laws, but attitudes; finding new allies to fight for sensible gun legislation and against hate.

Love is stronger than hate. We must show that in the way we act, speak and vote.

I don't even know what to say anymore. I have no more words, thoughts or prayers to offer in the wake of the Orlando shooting. None of us can adequately describe the magnitude and horror of the events of this week or the loss experienced by the GLBT community in Orlando and around the world.

The same sad music played for breaking news, President Obama made an eerily similar statement about the senseless attack and blame was shifted as to why the shooting happened in the first place. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Anger, sadness, and shock are everywhere. A striking moment that defined this sadness is when Anderson Cooper read the victim's names on-air while choking back tears through his entire broadcast. The worst part of this week was the palpable hopelessness around stopping gun violence.

Everyone has a degree of connection to the Orlando shooting. For me, Florida is my home state and my father's business is seven minutes away for The Pulse nightclub where the shooting took place. One of his employees survived the attack physically unscathed but is emotionally having difficulty. Also, my Facebook feed is flooded with posts from friends who live in the Orlando area and are connected in some way to the tragedy.

To make sense of what has happened, I write. I have nothing new to say, others have not already shared, but I still write. I hope in the face of hopelessness we will take action to ensure this never happens again. There is some comfort that people are still fighting and hoping for change and have provided overwhelming support for Orlando and the GLBT community.

But exasperation over the failed attempts to stop these shootings is ever present and for good reason. Mass shootings are now common and we all can easily remember Charleston, Aurora, Tucson and Newton just to name a few. Just take a look at the University of Southern California School of Social Work's infographic detailing a timeline of 182 school shooting since Sandy Hook, including at my alma mater Florida State University and the latest event at UCLA on June 1. This week's Washington Post article The Math of Mass Shootings details 126 events (which four or more people were killed) since 1966 which took place at churches, workplaces, schools and military bases. It's worth noting, the 244 guns used in these events, 140 were obtained legally and 39 illegally.

We know the statistics well, but the reasons why gun violence occurs and how to prevent it no one agrees upon. One reason is the lack of research. Did you know in 1997 the Centers for Disease Control was barred from doing research on causes and prevention of gun violence? It wasn't until President Obama issued an executive order after Newtown to loosen the ban and ordered the CDC to start collecting research. But two years after the Newtown tragedy, this order still has not spurred the CDC to start gun violence research even though the medical profession views this as a major public health concern. The January 2015 Washington Post article, indicated funding was still tight at the CDC and this ban has instilled fear in the academic community and other research institutes from diving into studying this issue. Without research-informed policy we are truly adrift from preventing gun violence.

"There is no logical reason in the world that our choices in a democratic free society should not be built around solid research data on how to prevent injury, fear, and the loss of life surrounding the ease of access and availability of weapons," said Ron Astor, MSW, PhD, school violence expert and professor at the University of Southern California School of Social Work. "The idea that conducting research on gun violence is against the second amendment is a red herring. There is NO conflict between the second amendment and making research-based rational decisions based on strong science to curtail dangerous situations to reduce the loss of lives."

Although the CDC's muscle has been muted, we do know some facts around gun violence that can still guide better gun laws. First, only 4 percent of all gun violence in the U.S. can be attributed to people diagnosed with a mental illness with nearly two-thirds of this number related to suicide. It's hard for people to believe this statistic given the headlines but it's an important distinction to be made that most mass shooters are not mentally ill and treatment can't help a sociopath who has a truly dark and evil soul.

Secondly, the best predictor if someone is to perpetrate gun violence is past violent behavior such as domestic abuse and violent crime. In 2013, The Consortium for Risk-Based Fire Arms Policy's Evidence-Based Approach for State Policy Report pointed to several key risk factors associated with firearm violence, including violent crime, domestic violence, and alcohol and substance use. Also, between November 30, 1998, and Dec. 31, 2010, nearly 600,000 gun purchases were prevented because of criminal records, including misdemeanor crimes and domestic violence convictions, which represents about 73% of The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) denials. But yet there are still massive problems with reporting to NICS.

In the wake of the Orlando shooting there is a confluence of reasons; hate against gay people, terrorism, and radicalization inspired by the Internet, a self-loathing gay person lashing out, pure evil, and gun control policy failures. Let's just say it's all of the above. We may not be able to stop or control all of the factors which contribute to gun violence or the bigotry someone holds in their hearts, but we must expect and demand that someone who was once on an FBI watch list should not be able to legally buy an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle with this gun's only purpose is for mass killing.

As people search for answers to curb gun violence, it's an easy conclusion for me. There are too many guns and it's too easy for the wrong people to get them. Let's stop talking and do something to stop this violence.

This fall, Apple's photos app will add a feature that reveals the company's increasing expertise in computer vision technology.

Apple Photos will be able to sort your snapshots by face, activity, and even the facial expression you or your friends might be making. 

Developer Kay Yin decided to go under the hood, into system frameworks, and take a peek at how Apple's actually pulling off this artificial intelligence achievement off. He published his findings on Medium. 

Turns out, Apple's newest software includes a hardcoded list of objects, terms, and even facial expressions that Photos can detect. 

"I found them by poking around plist files and system framework binaries" in the beta version of Apple's software, Yin told Business Insider.

For example, the photos app only recognizes and distinguishes between 7 hardcoded facial expressions: 

· Greedy
· Disgust
· Neutral
· Scream
· Smiling
· Surprise
· Suspicious. 

Apple's photo search works by detecting 4,432 specifically hardcoded different scenes and objects. So Apple is looking through your photos for specific images like "alligator,""dog," or a "burrito."

But this approach also indicates that at the moment, you won't be able to search for, say "beef jerky," which isn't included in the list. (The full list is at the bottom of the post.)

That's because Apple is pre-training — or teaching — its algorithm with these specific terms, then installing that pre-trained algorithm on people's devices.

In contrast, Google uploads each user's entire photo library to look for new patterns. Apple isn't planning to do that yet. 

Part of the different approach comes down to how Apple treats user data. Sure, big batches of data and photos are needed to make sure these kind of computer vision applications work, but Apple insists that it doesn't need your photos, specifically.

"There's this idea that, well, if you don't have the data, how would you ever learn? Well, turns out, if you want to get pictures of mountains, you don't need to get it out of people's personal photo libraries," Craig Federighi, Apple senior vice president of software, said in an interview last week. "We found out that we could find some pictures of some mountains!"

Dear Good Guy with a Gun,

In the wake of this latest mass shooting, we've all heard the NRA's rallying cry, "The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

If only a few patrons of the Pulse nightclub had been armed, maybe Omar Mateen would not have shot so many people. If only a few theater-goers in Aurora had brought their guns, more people would be alive today.

So, we must ask ourselves, in the midst of all the noise and chaos of a mass shooting, how is anyone to tell The Good Guy With the Gun from one of the perpetrators? Let's break this down. In Orlando, no one knew if Mateen was acting alone or with others--he wanted people to believe he had accomplices. If you're a victim and you see another gunman, is he protecting you, or out to get you? How can you possibly tell?

What does a good guy look like? Is he (or she) yelling, "I'm a good guy?" Can you even hear them amidst all the screaming? Are they in a uniform? Are they of a certain race or ethnic group? Age group? Wearing certain clothing? Using a handgun or an assault weapon? Do they fit a "profile?" How good is their aim? Have they had a few drinks in that nightclub or before they went to that movie?

The vast majority of mass shooters are white males. So, if we see a white male with a gun, should we feel frightened or feel protected? What if it's an African American male? Should we feel relieved that our hero has arrived? What if it's someone in uniform? Mass shooters have been known to wear uniforms- it happened at Fort Hood. They've been known to be female (San Bernadino). They've been known to be Asian (Virginia Tech), and African-American (the DC Sniper). Since many are doing it for a political cause, they may see themselves as the Good Guys With a Gun.

If you are someone who wants to carry a gun around to be that Good Guy hero, please know that I don't feel safe around you. I feel terrified around you. You are not my hero. When I see a gun, I start to sweat and my pulse goes up. Two months ago, I saw a man open-carry a handgun at the hospital where I work. I became frightened. It turned out he was a plain clothes police detective whose badge was not visible, but that did not stop the feeling that my peaceful community was now starting to become a war zone.

Twenty years ago, there was a shooting in front of my apartment. My landlady's daughter took her son and moved away in response. I stayed and bought a house and put down roots. In the past year or so, I hear of another shooting in my neighborhood every couple months. I don't want to buy a gun. I want it to stop. I don't want to move away. I want to live in peace in my own neighborhood, where I have a family, a garden, a network of friends. A gun will never bring me peace. Isn't the right to live in peace more important than the right to own a gun without restriction?

Dear Good Guy With A Gun: You scare me. You are not my hero. And I wouldn't know you if I saw you.

A basic overview of vestibular function and anatomy as well as central nervous system interaction is provided.
