Scientists To Spend A Month Closely Observing Saturn's Auroras

*April Flowers for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online*

An international team of researchers, in collaboration with University of Leicester planetary scientists, has organized the largest ever observational campaign of Saturn's auroras.

To expand our knowledge of the planet's northern lights, a host of space and ground-based telescopes will focus on the ringed gas giant for the month-long project. Scientists from the University's Department of Physics and Astronomy have worked with NASA and the European Space Observatory (ESO) to create this opportunity.

The range of instruments involved in the project is impressive: NASA and ESA’s Hubble Space Telescope, the NASA/ESA/ASI Saturn-orbiting spacecraft Cassini, the ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii and NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) in Hawaii. Each will make a different observation of Saturn's aurora covering a variety of wavelengths and viewpoints. This has the potential to supply the most comprehensive data set on the phenomenon to date.

The hope is that the combined observations will provide a better understanding of how the auroras are formed and the way energy flows from the solar winds and the planet's magnetic field into the ionosphere and atmosphere of Saturn.

We might also gain information relevant to other auroras, such as those here on Earth.

Between April 19 and May 21, 2013, the array of instruments will observe both the northern and southern auroras at several points. This period was chosen because it is the time of year when Saturn is closest to Earth and at its largest in the night's sky.

Dr. Tom Stallard, RCUK Academic Fellow in Planetary Science at Leicester, will lead the ground-based observations – over 74 hours from IRTF and over 15 hours from VLT, both of which will observe the northern aurora.

Dr. Jonathan Nichols will lead Hubble's 11 total hours of observation of the planet's northern ultraviolet aurora, while Dr. Sarah Badman is coordinating with the Cassini team to plan over 142 hours of observations of both the northern and southern auroras.

Dr. Stallard will work closely with Dr. Kevin Baines, of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), who is leading on Keck observations over 24 hours.

The findings from each instrument will be collated at the end of the observations, allowing the scientists to view and compare the observations of auroral events from many different angles.

“Up until now, it’s like we have been looking at the aurora in black and white – and now we're trying to look in color. We're hoping to get much more depth to the observations we have taken - filling in a far more complete picture of the aurora as a whole, rather than disconnected parts," said Dr Stallard, of the Radio and Space Plasma Physics Group within the University of Leicester’s Department of Physics and Astronomy.

“What we hope to gain from this observing campaign is a way to link different auroral and magnetospheric events, following the flow of energy through the system, from the solar wind and magnetic field of Saturn down into the ionosphere and atmosphere. By understanding the way this energy flows at Saturn, we should also gain real insight into the interaction between the Sun and other planets.”

Dr Jon Nichols added, "Over the last few years, the view from Earth of Saturn's north pole has been steadily growing, and we have been using Hubble to take snaps of Saturn's northern auroras as the view gets better.”

“This year will provide us with the best views yet of the north, and it's very exciting that a battery of other instruments will be zeroing in on the auroras at the same time. It takes a great deal of effort to obtain such coordinated efforts, so credit has to go to the whole team in getting this program organized."

Dr Badman said, “The coordination with Hubble, Cassini, Keck Observatory, IRTF and the VLT is going to provide really exciting science. For example, we may obtain good views of the northern and southern auroral emissions at the same time - Cassini looking at the south from high latitudes while HST and the other telescopes look at the north.”

A podcast concerning the project is available currently, and the team hopes to stream live observations from the W.M. Keck Observatory's website. Reported by redOrbit 6 days ago.

Issue 9: Rezoning Amendment For Liberty Ford Expansion

Issue 9: Rezoning Amendment For Liberty Ford Expansion Patch Solon, OH --

Solon residents and those in Ward 6 will vote on a rezoning amendment May 7 that, if passed, would allow Liberty Ford to proceed with their expansion plans.

Liberty Ford in Solon hopes to expand and modernize its car dealership, but will need approval first from the city's voters.

Passage of Issue 8 would allow city council to rezone adjacent properties so the dealership to expand its showroom.

*Background*

The Solon Chamber of Commerce has endorsed the rezoning. At a recent city council meeting Chamber President Jim Kelvington said the rezoning would improve the aesthetics of that part of the city and perhaps improve the chances for new development in the area.

But residents of the Solon Park Estates condominiums across the street from the dealership have said they oppose the rezoning because of increased noise and traffic in the area.

*Ballot Language*

A majority affirmative vote throughout the City and in Ward 6 is necessary for passageShall the Ordinance rezoning PP#s 954-02-035, 954-02-036, 954-02-037, 954-02-038, 954-02-039, 954-02-040, 954-02-041, 954-02-042, 954-02-043, 954-02-044, 954-02-045, 954-02-046, 954-02-047, 954-02-063, 954-02-064, 954-02-077, 954-02-078, 954-02-079, 954-02-080, 954-02-081, 954-02-082, 954-02-083, 954-02-084, 954-02-085, 954-02-086, and 954-02-087, totaling approximately 5.69 acres located on Aurora Road near the intersection of Aurora Road and Solon Road from the current C-3 Commercial Zoning District to the C-4 Motor Service Commercial District, be approved?

Issue 8: Rezoning Of Land Near Solon Village

Issue 8: Rezoning Of Land Near Solon Village Patch Solon, OH --

Solon voters and residents in Ward 6 will decide May 7 whether to rezone a 2.5-acre piece of land on Aurora Road.

The rezoning will appear on the ballot as Issue 8 and must be approved by a majority of voters citywide and in Ward 6 for passage.

*Background*

When Solon voters decided to rezone the Solar Center in 2009 so the outdated shopping plaza could be redeveloped, a key piece was an undeveloped 2.5 acre parcel along Aurora Road.

So the shopping plaza, and that parcel, were rezoned from office to a commercial district appropriate for shopping centers.

But now, with Solar Center being redeveloped into Solon Village, that parcel is no longer important to the development efforts, but is still zoned commercially.

Planning Director Rob Frankland said converting the land back to office zoning would be a better transition from the shopping plaza to the residential area just to the east, the Carrington Court senior apartments. It's also still zoned office across the street, so that makes better sense from a planning perspective.

*Ballot Language*

A majority affirmative vote throughout the City and in Ward 6 is necessary for passageShall the Ordinance rezoning approximately 2.5 acres of property located directly east of the Solon Village Shopping Center from the current C-3-A Commercial Shopping Center District to the O-1 General Office District be approved?

Shaker High Earns National Recognition From Washington Post

Shaker High Earns National Recognition From Washington Post Patch Shaker Heights, OH --

Each year, The Washington Post calculates the academic achievements of over 22,000 high schools nationwide to find out which are the most challenging.

More than 90 percent of the schools under review didn't make the cut. However, Shaker High School wasn't in that supermajority, the Post reported earlier this month.

Shaker was ranked 17th in the top 32 most challenging schools in Ohio, based on total student participation in highly rigorous, college-preparatory coursework and exams.

The rankings are determined by an index score which is calculated by dividing the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year by the number of seniors who graduated that year.

A ratio of 1.000 means the school had as many tests as graduates.

Also included is the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies (Subs. lunch) and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during high school, referred to as equity and excellence, (E&E).  A "P" next to the school's name denotes a private school.

Standing outside his Aurora home Sunday, Ahmad Tounisi said of his 18-year-old son: “I don’t think he would actually do what the government is saying he was planning to do. To me, it’s all assumption on the government’s part.” After a three-hour search of his residence Friday, FBI agents left with a Play Station video console, he said. Father Defends Teen Son Against Allegations Of Al Qaeda Ties

AURORA, Ill. -- The father of an Illinois teenager accused by federal authorities of trying to joining a terrorist group in Syria says he doesn't believe his son would ever do anything violent.

Ahmad Tounisi tells the Chicago Sun-Times (http://bit.ly/XQO2sk) that his 18-year-old son, Abdella Ahmad Tounisi, had talked about going to Tunisia, Egypt and Syria to help oppressed people there, but that he doesn't think his son would ever do what the federal authorities allege.

The FBI says the Aurora teenager was arrested Friday night as he tried to board a flight from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to Turkey, which borders Syria. He was snared in an Internet sting after contacting a sham website set up by the FBI.

The teenager is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. Reported by Huffington Post 4 hours ago.

FBI Arrests Aurora Man With Ties to Al-Qaida, Failed 2012 Chicago Bombing Patch Bolingbrook, IL --

Federal officials arrested Aurora resident Abdella Ahmad Tounisi, 18, Saturday as he was about get on a plane at O'Hare Airport to join al-Qaida, according to an FBI press release.

The FBI reports that Tounisi had ties to a man who attempted to bomb a downtown Chicago bar last year.

Cory B. Nelson, special agent in charge of the Chicago Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, emphasized that "there is no connection between this case and the events that occurred over the last several days in Boston," the press release said.

The FBI said Tounisi was trying to get to Syria in order to join a jihadist militant group operating inside Syria. The arrest was announced Saturday by Nelson and Gary S. Shapiro, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

Tounisi was charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court with one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, a felony offense. He was held without bail until his next court appearance, which is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. April 23, 2013.

The investigation that culminated in Tounisi’s arrest began in 2012. It states that Tounisi is a close friend of Adel Daoud, an individual arrested in September 2012 for attempting to detonate a bomb outside a Chicago bar, and that Tounisi and Daoud appeared to share an interest in violent jihad.

While Tounisi allegedly discussed attack techniques and targets prior to Daoud’s arrest, Tounisi did not participate in Daoud’s attempted attack, the press release said.

According to the complaint, Tounisi conducted online research related to overseas travel and violent jihad, focusing specifically on Syria and the Jabhat al Nusrah terrorist group. Jabhat al Nusrah is listed by the U.S. Department of State as an alias for al Qaeda in Iraq, a designated foreign terrorist organization.

The complaint alleges that Tounisi searched online for information about travel from Chicago to Syria, obtained a new passport, and, beginning in late March 2013, made online contact with an individual Tounisi believed to be a recruiter for Jabhat al Nusrah. That individual was in fact an FBI employee acting in an online undercover capacity.

Tounisi and the undercover employee exchanged a series of e-mails in which Tounisi shared his plan to get to Syria by way of Turkey, as well as his willingness to die for the cause. During the exchanges, Tounisi also sought advice from the undercover employee on travel from Istanbul to the Turkish city of Gaziantep, which lies near the border of Turkey and Syria, according to the complaint.

If convicted of the charge filed against him, Tounisi faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison.

The JTTF is composed of special agents of the FBI, officers of the Chicago Police Department, and representatives from an additional 20 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The Justice Department’s National Security Division assisted in the investigation.
