Lazydays Employee Foundation 6th Annual Golf Tournament Raises Over $124,000 to Support Local Youths

More than 90 sponsors and 144 golfers participated in the annual tournament, with all proceeds directly helping to improve the lives of at-risk children in Tampa Bay.

TAMPA, Fla. (PRWEB) May 18, 2016

The Lazydays Employee Foundation recently hosted its 6th Annual Golf Tournament to benefit at-risk youth in the Tampa Bay area, exceeding last year’s fundraising results of $124K from sponsors, supporters and registered players. All proceeds will fund programs designed to help create a brighter future and pave the way to success for local children in need.

This year’s golf tournament raised the largest amount to date, thanks in large part to the generous support of over 90 sponsors. Among the event’s major sponsors were Bank of America, which once again stepped up as Tournament Sponsor for the sixth consecutive year, and Platinum Sponsor Greenberg Traurig LLP.

The evening before the tournament, sponsors and golfers attended a kick-off dinner and silent auction at the Lazydays Crown Club. The 6th Annual Lazydays Employee Foundation Golf Tournament was held Friday, May 13, at the River Hills Country Club in Valrico, Florida. Nearly 150 golfers, comprising 36 teams, participated in the tournament and gathered for an awards luncheon immediately following the event.

In addition to playing 18 holes of golf and raising funds for the Lazydays Employee Foundation’s charitable efforts, golfers competed in a series of challenges: longest drive, closest to the pin and three hole-in-one shootouts with an RV as the top prize.

“We are grateful for continuing support of our sponsors and golfers, and for the tireless efforts of our small but dedicated group of employee volunteers who worked behind the scenes. Together, they have made this tournament a resounding success year after year,” said Janet Chiodi, chair of fundraising for the Lazydays Employee Foundation.

Chiodi added that proceeds from the event will go a long way toward helping fulfill the Foundation’s mission: to measurably improve the lives of children by instilling hope, inspiring dreams and empowering them with education.

The 7th Annual Lazydays Employee Foundation Golf Tournament is tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 5, 2017. Details and sponsorship/registration information will be posted at http://www.ldef.org/golf closer to the event.

Repealing the Gun Industry's Unacceptable Liability Shield

0
0
Last week, my children were held in lockdown at their schools because there was an active shooter in the area. That scenario, once unthinkable for most Americans, is now endlessly played out in cities across the nation, sometimes with the most horrific results.

It desensitizes us to the maddening reality of Congressional inaction. Since Aurora and Sandy Hook, Congress keeps on failing the families of those lost to the scourge of gun violence.

Congress has failed to require universal background checks or ban assault weapons. And while blaming much of America's gun violence on mental illness, Congress has yet to pass meaningful reform broadening access to care and making it more difficult for the seriously mentally ill to obtain weapons. Congress refuses to support federal research into how we can lessen gun violence. The notion that Congress is content to have moments of silence on the House floor, but no moments of action, is all too accurate.

But not completely so. In fact, the one time Congress truly acted was a major step back - to protect the gun industry.

In 2005, Congress passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) - a law that the National Rifle Association described as "the most significant piece of pro-gun legislation in twenty years." This is not an exaggeration. This new video by Brave New Films tells you everything you need to know.
This law provides unique immunity in state and federal court from civil liability for licensed manufacturers, distributors, and dealers of firearms, as well as their trade associations, in most negligence and product liability actions.

When Congress was debating PLCAA over a decade ago, the bill's sponsor, Senator Larry Craig, stated "This bill will not prevent a single victim from obtaining relief for wrongs done to them by anyone in the gun industry." This statement has been proven to be patently false.

In reality, since 2005, PLCAA has shut the courthouse doors to victims of gun violence and their families and enabled the gun industry to negligently sell deadly weapons with near impunity.

In my hometown of Burbank, California, a rookie police officer, Matthew Pavelka, was shot and killed by a gang member in 2003. Pavelka's family brought a suit because the dealer that had sold the gun used by the gang member had a history of repeatedly selling guns to straw purchasers who sold to gang members, as was the case with the gun used in this crime. This dealer did not use reasonable to care to ensure that the guns it was selling were, in fact, for the purchaser, and not merely bought by a straw purchaser as a conduit to criminal gangs. Yet because of PLCAA, the family did not even have the opportunity to present the evidence of carelessness and negligence in court.

Had PLCAA not been law, the family may or may not have been able to prove negligence on the gun dealer's part. But there is no doubt that his family would have had their day in court to try.

This story of denial of access to justice is all too common. Far too many suits have been thrown out before evidence was even presented, and even more were not even filed because of PLCAA's deterrence.

Not only has PLCAA denied victims equal access to justice, it has allowed the gun industry to continue acting with little regard for the consequences. In all other aspects of society, civil liability is how we hold companies and individuals responsible for acting with reasonable care towards others. If gun dealers know they are immune from liability, there is little incentive to secure supply chains, take advantage of safety devices, and ensure responsible conduct.

For these reasons, I introduced the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act, which would repeal the unique immunity that Congress gifted the gun industry in 2005. We must hold the gun industry to the same standard as we do all other industries to exercise reasonable care towards the public.

Passing the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act to repeal PLCAA will not be easy. The NRA is fighting tooth and nail to maintain its unique status as the only industry that can act with impunity. It's our job, as concerned citizens, parents and legislators, to press on, and share the stories that can bring about change -- so no parents need to receive word that their children are in lockdown, or worse.

Welcome to Niceville: An NRA Model Community

0
0
Is the sun always shining in Niceville, or does it just seem that way? Is it really always 72 degrees with a slight breeze, or is that just how it feels when everyone in town is packing?

Welcome to Niceville, an NRA Model Community.

We begin our tour on Hollow Point Circle, a typical Niceville street. Here you find lovely homes, all with green, well-kept lawns, white picket fences, and an average of three firearms per household. Think Norman Rockwell, if he were the illustrator for Guns & Ammo.

This is a peaceful neighborhood and the homeowners will stand their ground to keep it that way. One ill-advised fellow decided to test his luck, and still has a bullet inside him for his efforts. Yes, as it turned out, he was a pizza delivery boy who'd gone to the wrong house, but the box looked suspiciously like a large, square, flat gun, and he was Pakistani. It was an unfortunate mistake for which the people of Niceville paid a terrible price: Pizza Palace no longer delivers. But then freedom isn't free.

Ah, here we are. This is Wayne LaPierre Elementary, which we believe is the safest school in America. Why? Because every adult is armed, from the alcoholic gym teacher to the recently divorced cafeteria worker with the anger issues. This policy paid off in spades last spring when an Arab terrorist, posing as an air conditioner repairman, made his way into the school, only to be met with a hail of bullets. Afterwards, when we learned that he wasn't a terrorist, but the same Pakistani pizza delivery fellow now working as an air conditioner repairman, we made no apology. A sizeable settlement, yes. But no apology.

Heston Drive takes us right into the town square. Here you find City Hall, the courthouse, the library, and the movie theater, which features fully reclining seats, a Dolby Surround 7.1 sound system, and a concession counter where you can get everything from Raisinets to .223 caliber rounds for your Bushmaster XM-15 semiautomatic. There'll be no repeat of Aurora here. If anyone tried, the pitch darkness would be lit bright by the muzzle flashes of dozens of weapons, all aimed in the general direction of the perpetrator.

Now we come to the real heart of the community, our church. Pretty much the entire town shows up here every Sunday. And, yes, they are welcome to bring their firearms. We've even got gun racks built into the backs of the pews, right above the trays that hold the prayer books. Some of our more rambunctious parishioners, rather than say "amen," like to fire a round or two in the air. Sure, it does a little damage, but as Pastor Neff likes to say, "If only the Garden of Eden had been open carry. There'd be one dead serpent, and we'd all be living there today!"

I want to thank you for coming. To get back to the main highway, just take Zimmerman Parkway and turn right when you hit the Obama Hazardous Waste Dump. The interstate's just past the outlet mall, though I recommend stopping for a fun visit. All the major brands have stores there--Colt, Smith & Wesson, Remington, Glock, and for reasons none of us understand, Tommy Bahama.

Finally, remember the Niceville motto: the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a--whing!--Jimmy Morgan, I'm going to tell your Mama! You know to always point the barrel down! Oh great, you winged the Pakistani.

Aurora theater shooting civil trial goes to jury

Lou and Aurora Paradise, founders of Topical BioMedics (Topricin), honored Monday 5/16/2016 in Lake George, NY as the 2016 Outstanding Biomedical Company of the Year from New York State.

Rhinebeck, NY (PRWEB) May 19, 2016

The New York Small Business Development Center’s annual award event recognizes and honors the life changing work of innovative and inspiring entrepreneurs whom represent collectively the largest employer group of 380,000 plus small businesses - the backbone of the economic engine in New York State.

Topical BioMedics, Inc was one of only nine companies selected from every region in the state, honored as the Biomedical Company of the Year, as part of Mid-Hudson SBDC.

Lou and Aurora Paradise needed some financial assistance early in their business and found a very receptive and dedicated person in Al Griggs at SBDC in the Mid-Hudson center that was instrumental in getting a loan from SBA. When it was time for business expansion financing, the Mid-Hudson center was there again for the assistance they needed. Now in their 22nd year of operations, sales are up 30 % over 2015 and the company is poised for accelerated growth in the months ahead.

Sincerely honored and with great humility, founders Lou and Aurora Paradise: "Our SBDC business advisor, Al Griggs, has been a major part of our business growth since the beginning. We appreciate and are grateful to the entire staff at the SBDC, and look forward to working with them in the future."

In celebration of the great and inspiring achievements of their fellow entrepreneurs and small business owners, Mr. and Mrs. Paradise donated 200 bags with tubes of Topricin Pain Relief and Healing Cream to their fellow entrepreneurs and SBDC conference attendees, to thank them for their diligent efforts, enthusiasm and passion for all they do to make the world a better place.

Says Nancy L. Zimpher, Chancellor of the State University of New York: "The State University of New York is especially proud of our work with the Small Business Development Centers because we fully understand the necessity of successful small businesses to the health of our economy and communities – that they are the backbone of the economic vibrancy, and shape and influence the quality of life in every region in the state."

At this year’s gala event hosted at the Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center in Lake George, NY, 9-awards were presented in the following entrepreneurial categories: Exporter of the Year, Growth Company of the Year, Manufacturer of the Year, Minority Entrepreneur of the Year, Procurement Entrepreneur of the Year, Technology Entrepreneur of the Year, Veteran Entrepreneur of the Year, Woman Entrepreneur of the Year – and Topical BioMedics, Inc award- Biomedical Company of the year.

SBDC chooses companies from a number of standard categories including; minority, veteran and women owned businesses and manufacturing, growth, etc.), and select what they deem as the most outstanding companies in those categories each year. The biomedical company of the year is one of the specialized award categories, presented for an outstanding company from a specialized field that has done well with SBDC assistance. Other occasional award categories include agricultural, export, green/environmental, energy, home-based, and Phoenix (companies impacted by a disaster and successfully recovered).

The process to select award winners involves the SBDC asking advisors and directors at New York State’s regional centers and special project coordinators to nominate business owners they feel deserve recognition as an outstanding NYS small business/entrepreneur. The SBDC has a committee at the Central Office (HQ) that reviews the nominations and selects the award winners.

Topical BioMedics, Inc was one of the only companies in the biomedical category that was nominated this year, though SBDC has worked with many biomedical companies over the years.

The SBDC has been giving out Entrepreneur of the Year awards to recognize NYS small businesses that have been successful with SBDC assistance since 1992.

In recognition of Mr. and Mrs. Paradise’s award and great contribution to the nation as a whole, a flag was flown in their honor over the United States Capitol on April 15, 2016 at the request of the Honorable Nydia M. Velazquez, Member of Congress of the United States of America.
