Amal Clooney Is Helping Lebanese Girls Get An Education

International human rights lawyer Amal Clooney wants to increase educational opportunities for fellow Lebanese women.

She has partnered with 100 Lives, an organization seeking to educate people on the Armenian genocide, to annually award a scholarship at the United World College in Dilijan, Armenia. Winners will enroll in a two-year international baccalaureate program.

"This scholarship will give young women from Lebanon the opportunity of a lifetime," Clooney said in a statement. "Cross-cultural learning and studying abroad can be transformative. I am grateful to 100 Lives for helping to open doors for these bright and talented young women.""As a leading human rights barrister and campaigner, Amal Clooney is an inspirational role model for young women around the world. She exemplifies integrity, compassion and dedication -- and typifies what it means to be a global citizen across all cultures," Ruben Vardanyan, co-founder of 100 Lives and UWC Dilijan, said in a statement. "100 Lives recognizes the need for future generations to have greater cross-cultural understanding. The college strives to make education a force for peace by bringing together aspiring young leaders from all over the world."

Selection criteria for the Amal Clooney Scholarship include "exemplary academic performance and demonstrable interest in the promotion of human rights and international issues."

Pamela Tebchrany is the first recipient. Fluent in Arabic, English and French, she recently graduated top of her class and plans to study human rights and women's equality.

The choice to partner with an Armenian organization may stem from Amal and husband George Clooney's commitment to genocide prevention. George Clooney co-chairs the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, which was developed by 100 Lives and recognizes individuals "who put themselves at risk to enable others to survive" and will be presented in Armenia next year. He also co-founded the Not On Our Watch foundation -- a partner of 100 Lives -- which aims to end mass atrocities.

Here's What Disney Princesses Look Like As 'Star Wars' Characters

In our humble opinion, one princess in the "Star Wars" universe was never enough. And in "Force Awakens," Princess Leia doesn't even use her royal title. But thankfully, visual artist Isaiah Stephens has gifted us with his latest Disney-themed mashup which answers the question, "What would it look like if Disney characters visited the 'Star Wars' universe?"

Stephens plops some of your favorite animated leading ladies, including Pocahontas, Mulan, Aurora, Snow White and Tiana, as well as some other iconic characters, into classic "Star Wars" scenarios like Leia's imprisonment by Jabba the Hutt and her time on the forest moon of Endor.

How to Eliminate Mass Killers -- It's Common Sense

$
0
0
My tongue is firmly planted in my cheek, yet this is no joke. On April 15, 2013, two Muslim brothers killed three spectators (and later, a police officer) near the finish line of the annual Boston Marathon. On December 2, 2015, two Muslim terrorists murdered 14 fellow employees as they were enjoying a company party at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California.

We would be safer by far if we were to stop the flow of Muslims who seek to relocate to the United States. Even better, why not deport most of them who are already on American soil? It's just common sense.

Of course, Muslim terrorism is not our only source of national anxiety. Asian-Americans have committed their share of mass killings as well. On April 16, 2007, an Asian-American student shot to death 32 fellow students and faculty members on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. On April 2, 2012, an Asian-American killed seven -- six students and an administrator -- at Oikos University in Oakland, California. We would be safer by far if we were to stop the flow of Asians who seek to relocate to the United States. Even better, why not deport most of them? It's just common sense.

Of course, Black Americans have committed mass killings in recent years. On September 16, 2013, an African American gunman fatally shot 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard in Southeast Washington DC. On August 3, 2010, a Black employee working at a wholesale beer distributing company in Manchester, Connecticut killed eight white fellow workers before turning the gun on himself. We would be safer by far if we were to stop the flow of Blacks who seek to relocate to the United States. Even better, why not deport most of them? It's just common sense.

Of course, most acts of mass murder have been committed by non-Muslim White men -- not Muslims, Asians, or Blacks. On November 27, 2015, a white non-Muslim murdered three people at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs. On the evening of June 17, 2015, a white non-Muslim killed nine black Americans as they prayed in a Charleston South Carolina church. On April 13, 2014, a non-Muslim white supremacist shot to death three Christian visitors (thinking his victims were Jewish) at a Jewish Community Center in Overland Park, Kansas. On August 5, 2012, a white non-Muslim who played in a white power rock band killed six Sikh Indians at their temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. On July 20, 2012, a white non-Muslim graduate student murdered 12 people at a cinema in Aurora, Colorado. On January 8, 2011, a white non-Muslim man who suffered from mental health issues and attempted to assassinate Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot to death 14 people at a shopping mall in Tuscan, Arizona. We would be safer by far if we were to stop the flow of non-Muslim white people who seek to relocate to the United States. Even better, why not deport most of them? It's just common sense.

Of course, we also have a problem with immigrants from Latin American countries. Millions have come to the United States illegally, yet they seem to be the only ethnic group whose members haven't yet committed an act of mass murder on American soil. In fact, their crime rate is much lower than that of the native-born population. We would be safer by far if we were to open our border with Mexico so that much larger numbers of undocumented immigrants could sneak in. Even better, why not advertise in Latin American countries that we welcome their tired, their poor, their non-violent huddled masses yearning to be free. It's just common sense.

‘Star Wars’ Buzzkill: No Face Paint, Masks, Hoods Allowed at ‘The Force Awakens’ Screenings

If you plan on dressing up as Yoda or Darth Vader to see “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” this weekend, you’re gonna need Jedi mind tricks to get into the theater.

Multiple cinema chains have set strict rules and guidelines for fans hoping to see the film this weekend, implementing rigid security measures so “no other guests feel uncomfortable” or get distracted “from the movie-going experience.”

AMC, for example, encourages guests to come dressed in costume — as long as they can see your face.

“Guests are welcome to come dressed in costume, but we do not permit masks or face paint,” Ryan Noonan, director of Corporate Communications at AMC, told TheWrap. *“*In short, bring your light-saber, turn it off during the movie, and leave the blaster and Darth Vader mask at home.”

Regal Cinemas is taking matters even further, also outlawing light-sabers and face-obscuring hoods in addition to other weapon-like memorabilia.

“Guests of all ages with masks, props, face paint or weapons are not allowed into Regal Entertainment Group locations,” said Sandra Heinig, director of PR at Regal Entertainment Group. “This includes Light-sabers and face-obscuring hoods.”

Cinemark Theatres will allow “no face coverings, face paint, or simulated weapons (including lightsabers/blasters).”

For those heading to the multiple sellout showings of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” this weekend, Disney is offering additional guidelines. On Disney’s website, they say that costumes should not “drag on the floor, contain sharp, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another guest.”

At AMC Disney Springs 24 in Florida’s Walt Disney Resort, masks must be carried although they can be worn for photos, and all persons, bags and parcels are subject to search.

The heightened security measures come following a number of deadly movie theater incidents this year: In July, a shooter killed himself after gunning down two during a showing of the movie “Trainwreck” in Lafayette, Louisiana; in August, a man was shot and killed after he attacked moviegoers with pepper spray and a hatchet at a theater in Nashville.

In 2012, James Holmes opened fire during a screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, Colorado. According to multiple witnesses, the shooter was dressed in costume, as were multiple people in the theater.

Carmike Cinemas did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment. Reported by The Wrap 4 hours ago.

ITsavvy, one of the fastest growing unified communications (UC) providers in the U.S., just announced two significant ShoreTel recognitions: ShoreTel’s Circle of Excellence Award in the U.S. Cloud and advancement to the Gold Level in ShoreTel’s Champion Partner Program.

ADDISON, Ill. (PRWEB) December 17, 2015

ShoreTel®, Inc. is the leading provider of UC solutions.

ITsavvy President and CEO Mike Theriault said, “Both of these recognitions are milestones for ITsavvy that demonstrate our commitment to delivering the best unified communications products and services. This is especially meaningful for us because one of the criteria for being selected for both of these awards is the deep commitment to client service that we’ve maintained throughout our growth trajectory.”

ITsavvy was one of only 10 ShoreTel partners to receive The Circle of Excellence Award in the U.S. Cloud this year; only one in 2,000 ShoreTel partners were selected. The award recognizes ITsavvy for exceptional achievement in areas that include client satisfaction, proficiency with advanced applications, and year-over-year growth.

ShoreTel’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales David Petts said “Being named to the Circle of Excellence is the highest accolade given by ShoreTel to its partners, and we’re very pleased to welcome ITsavvy into this elite group. The Circle of Excellence Award is presented to ShoreTel’s top global reseller partners, and each year less than one-half of one percent of all partners earn this distinction. We’re proud that ITsavvy surpassed the strict criteria required to earn Circle of Excellence status this year. ”

ITsavvy delivers ShoreTel’s solutions portfolio along with training and other support services. ITsavvy’s industry-leading Advanced Solutions Group engineers have expertise in disciplines such as LAN, WAN, call center, voice and data application integration. ShoreTel and its partners share the same goals in delivering UC solutions that improve communication and collaboration, with superior levels of client care and satisfaction at a low total cost of ownership.

ITsavvy also announced that it has advanced to the top Gold level in the ShoreTel Champion Partner Program. ITsavvy achieved ShoreTel’s Gold level by meeting highest level sales goals for the previous 12-month period. Reaching the Gold level also signifies that ITsavvy is committed to staying current on all sales and technical certifications and product demonstration capabilities.

ShoreTel, Inc. designed the Champion Partner Program to strengthen the relationship between ShoreTel and its partners. The program’s goal is to advance and grow both companies’ market share in the UC industry, while ensuring every client continues to be delighted with the ShoreTel experience.

ShoreTel’s Petts said, “ITsavvy has been a hardworking member of the ShoreTel program, and we congratulate them on achieving this level. The advanced, award-winning ShoreTel technology combined with the expertise of ITsavvy means more customers are enjoying greater flexibility, productivity and cost savings than ever before.” Client satisfaction has been a top business priority for both ITsavvy and ShoreTel; whose partners are required to adhere to it as a primary business value.

ITsavvy’s Director of Unified Communications for the Advanced Solutions Group Dennis Gorecki said, “These recognitions are proof that ITsavvy is performing among elite level partners within ShoreTel. As we continue to grow, we will continue to add more sales and personnel that are certified on ShoreTel products.”

VW Hires Lawyer Ken Feinberg, the Compensation King, to Administer Cheater-Diesel Payments

VW Hires Lawyer Ken Feinberg, the Compensation King, to Administer Cheater-Diesel Payments -

Attention, cheater-diesel Volkswagen (and Audi) owners: The compensation payouts are gearing up. That’s the clear implication from the recent announcement that Volkswagen has retained the services of Kenneth R. Feinberg’s legal firm. Feinberg is “to design and administer an independent claims-resolution program to address claims related to the 2.0L and 3.0L TDI vehicles affected by the emissions compliance issue.”

-

Feinberg’s name may sound familiar. The man has become something of a standout in the legal field as the Compensation King, having determined the payouts to the families of the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks; to the claimants who suffered economic damage from the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill; to the victims of the shootings at Virginia Tech and Aurora, Colorado; and more recently to those injured or killed in crashes caused by faulty GM ignition switches.

-

Feinberg, obviously, has been a busy guy, and he is about to get even busier. In VW’s press release, Mr. Feinberg is quoted as saying that he is “going to commence work immediately,” with the goal being “to have a claims program designed as expeditiously as possible.”

-

Clearly, VW is readying compensation offers to owners of its emissions-cheating diesels. In so doing, it no doubt is hoping to head off the spate of lawsuits that already have been announced seeking redress for those owners, whose cars have suffered a drop in resale value and may offer worse fuel economy and performance once fixes are made, and who may just be pissed that their Clean Diesels are anything but. The company already has offered $500 Visa gift cards and between $500 and $750 worth of Volkswagen service or merchandise to affected owners, but evidently there’s more to come.

What form VW’s compensation offer or offers will take remains to be seen, and is no doubt a central focus of the work Mr. Feinberg and his associates are undertaking. How many owners decide to accept those offers, and how many decide to try their luck with lawsuits, is something we probably won’t know for some time.

Denver resident and Colorado State University graduate Smethie opened his first Uncle Maddio’s location in Aurora last January. The opening in Westminster is the second location for the franchisee.

“James has done an amazing job in Aurora and is sure to make his second restaurant in Westminster as big of a success,” said Matt Andrew, CEO. “The create-your-own pizza concept is taking off in Denver and we expect Uncle Maddio’s to be the top choice for pizza lovers in the area.”
