Aurora HDR brings high-dynamic range photography to the Mac

Your eyes can see a lot more than your camera sensor can, and high-dynamic range photography, or HDR, is a popular technique that attempts to overcome those limitations by bringing out detail in both the light and dark areas of a photo. HDR is especially popular for travel photos, like landscapes, but getting it right can take careful shooting and skillful editing. To help photographers of all skill levels achieve flexible HDR results, Macphun tapped HDR photographer and Stuck In Customs founder Trey Ratcliff to co-develop a new app called Aurora HDR.

“It was as tight a collaboration as we can have short of his putting fingers on the keyboard,” Kevin LaRue, Macphun’s vice president told Macworld. “Trey has been involved with the naming conventions, the workflow, and the order of tools on the right-hand side of the interface.” In addition, the software will sport signature custom presets and textures straight out of Ratcliff’s shop.

First of Kind Partnership with Finland’s Trade and Investment Promotion Agency Finpro Creates New Model for Connecting Finland’s Entrepreneurs to US Investors and Customers. With 117 Companies from 11 Countries, StartUp Health’s Expansion Strategy is to Cross-Pollinate Global Health Innovation Ecosystems.

Helsinki, Finland (PRWEB) November 10, 2015

SLUSH Conference - StartUp Health, a global health innovation company with the world’s largest portfolio of digital health companies, today announced the launch of StartUp Health Finland in partnership with Finpro’s Team Finland Health growth program. The partnership will further both organizations’ missions, to grow and scale the next generation of businesses and strengthen Finland’s position as a digital health leader. StartUp Health Finland will focus on coaching and supporting the emerging ecosystem of Finnish entrepreneurs and integrating them directly into StartUp Health’s global platform to provide ongoing access to investors, expertise and commercialization opportunities around the world.

StartUp Health Finland will co-locate in the Health Innovation Village at GE in Helsinki’s ‘Silicon’ Vallila district and host regular programming and community events for entrepreneurs, innovators and healthcare transformers. To kick off, StartUp Health Finland will select five Finnish health tech startups to invite into the StartUp Health Academy, a long-term entrepreneurial coaching program and community designed to scale and grow early stage health tech companies.

“We’re thrilled to launch StartUp Health Finland and partner with Team Finland Health, Finpro and the entire community of corporate leaders and health organizations to help build the global ecosystem of Healthcare Transformers,” said Steven Krein, co-founder and CEO of StartUp Health. “Finland is a healthcare pioneer and has the unique ingredients required for groundbreaking digital health innovation to thrive: cutting edge health innovation, mobile and digital leadership, a collaborative environment and a growing entrepreneurial energy.”

Finland has long been recognized for technological innovation dating back to the founding of Nokia, Suunto, Polar and more recently through the launch of Rovio Entertainment, Jolla, Beddit and Supercell. Driving one of the world’s most progressive healthcare environments has been significant investments in infrastructure, R&D, and innovation initiatives, and support for companies and university spin offs; all to further advance Finland’s burgeoning position as a leading digital health country.

“One of the challenges for young entrepreneurs in Finland is getting access to global commercialization opportunities and investors around the world. The collaboration with StartUp Health will bridge this gap,” said Eero Toivainen, Program Director of Team Finland Health / Finpro.

“StartUp Health is a global leader in building early stage healthcare companies, and is the only platform with a long-term plan, which is why we’re incredibly excited to welcome StartUp Health to Finland. Together we can build one of the world’s great countries for personalized health and make it easier to share our innovations with the rest of the world,” said Nora Kaarela, Head of Health Industry / Finpro.

“We believe that by connecting the nation’s amazing entrepreneurs into StartUp Health’s global program and our network around the world, we can make a significant impact on transforming healthcare,” said Unity Stoakes, co-founder and president of StartUp Health. “While we are starting by helping build 5 Finnish startups, the goal is to eventually help build 100 or more Finnish health tech companies and create one of the world’s leading health innovation hubs that will serve as a model for other communities.”

StartUp Health Finland will provide selected entrepreneurs access to a multi-year program that includes:· direct access to StartUp Health’s global platform including StartUp Health Academy, StartUp Health Network and Healthcare Transformer peer community
· ongoing coaching and mentoring in Finland and the US
· market access to key US and global healthcare stakeholders including StartUp Health’s global network of 30,000 investors, customers and experts
· a collaborative network that includes Team Finland Health and Finpro infrastructure co-working space in the Health Innovation Village at GE
· a pathway for startups from around the globe to leverage Finland as a world-class test bed for digital health innovation

The new Veteran and Military Health Care (VMHC) program at the University of Colorado College of Nursing is offering online courses based on the unique needs of veterans and military service members. The program provides nurses and health care professionals the chance to get involved with emerging treatments at the Veterans Administration Medical Centers and Military Health System.

AURORA, Colo. (PRWEB) November 10, 2015

“Our veterans and service members have unique needs compared to the general population. The consequences of combat and military service are enduring and affect veterans and their families,” said Mona Pearl, PhD, RN, Colonel (Ret.), USAF and professor at the CU College of Nursing at the Anschutz Medical Campus. “War veterans are found to be at a significantly increased risk for suicide. With 22 veterans dying from suicide each day, they deserve health care professionals that can address the invisible and visible consequences of war by providing them with patient and family centered care.”

In the U.S., there are over 22 million beneficiaries in the Veterans Administration, more than nine million in the Military Health System (MHS), and over 100,000 doctors and nurses. This program is designed to expose health care professionals to the nuances of military and veteran culture, systems, and services. It aims to expand their understanding of the special needs of veterans and military service members. And ultimately, it strives to not only provide care, but also help them manage their own health and wellness.

“Veteran culture is complex and unique to each veteran,” said Dr. Pearl. “We developed this program to promote an academic and clinical specialty that would address the needs of this population. We believe our heroes and their families deserve health care tailored to both veteran and military related medical conditions and family dynamics.”

This is an online program enabling individuals to access and achieve a graduate certificate, master’s degree or a customized plan of study for a bachelor’s of science degree to a PhD either locally or remotely.

Pearl entered the USAF in 1992 as a master’s-prepared nurse and served as both an active duty and reserve officer, attaining the rank of Colonel before her retirement in 2014. As a three time Cancer survivor, she has also successfully navigated the health care system.

If you are interested in speaking with Dr. Pearl, please contact Ryann Nickerson at 720-726-0378.

About the College of Nursing at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus: Founded in 1898, the CU College of Nursing offers bachelor's, master’s and doctoral (DNP and PHD) programs to more than 900 students in two locations and online. Our master’s programs and online graduate programs are ranked nationally by U.S. News & World Report. New programs include a certificate in palliative care, and a DNP/MPH interdisciplinary dual degree and new master’s specialties in acute care and military and veterans’ health. Celebrating Veteran-Owned Small Businesses

$

As a member of a proud military family, I was always taught to show respect and appreciation to our local veterans and their families for the selfless service and protection they have given our country. When given the opportunity to blog about one of our local alumni on this Veteran's Day, I jumped at the chance. I wanted to take time out of my daily routine to give thanks and highlight one small businesses owner from the Chicagoland area who is proud to represent his country and community.

Last week, I had the opportunity to interview Robert Velazquez, an alumnus from our Chicago Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program. Robert is a graduate of Chicago's Cohort 5 and President of Semper Fi Yard Services Inc.

*Q: Tell us a little about yourself.*

A: My name is Robert R. Velazquez and I am 31 years old. I was born in Aurora, Illinois and raised in Bristol, Illinois where I currently reside. After graduating from Aurora Central Catholic High School, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corp., where I served 6 years as an Artilleryman. We operated as an eight-man gun team firing the 155mm howitzer cannon. In 2006, I was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq for one year. Since my return, I own and operate Semper Fi Yard Services Inc.

*Q: Tell us about your company. *

A: Upon my return from Marine Corps training in 2004, I started to build my company. Semper Fi Yard Services was based on the values I learned while serving in the Corps: integrity, professionalism, precision and honor. We understand when working with any customer that we are a direct representation of the Marine Corps and take great pride in our work and impression.

We started as a professional landscape company, providing services ranging from designing, building, and maintaining commercial and residential landscapes. We are capable of providing pre- and post-construction services from installing slit fencing, dirt work, seed & sod, planting tree/shrubs/perennials, retaining walls, and permeable/conventional brick paver installation. Most recently we started a specialty division in Ecological Restoration.

*Q: What does being a veteran-owned small business (VOSB) mean to you? *

A: I am extremely proud to be a VOSB. I hope that the VOSB and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) program evolves and get more veteran businesses involved. We all deserve recognition for our sacrifices.

*Q: What has being a part of the 10,000 Small Business program meant to you?*

A: The 10KSB has helped Semper Fi Yard Services tremendously! At the time I was going through the program, my company had many great opportunities coming our way. So the program really helped me focus and create a plan so we could take advantage of those opportunities. And we did! Having a plan in place made growth smooth. When I look back and read that growth plan, it motivates me.

*Q: What advice would you like to give to other veterans who own small businesses?*

A: Get certified!!!! We need all Veterans to get their businesses certified on the local, state and federal levels. It doesn't come easy, but we need you. There are a lot of resources to get assistance. Call me! I'll help if I can. There are only about 120 registered VOSB and SDVOSB in Illinois (CMS). When local and state agencies consider a Veteran goal on a contract, they look at how many certified VOSB or SDVOSB are able to perform the work. But these goals are often not met because of the low number of certified VOSB and SDVOSB. We need YOU!

*Q: Any other advice you'd like to share?*

A: Be happy. Be thankful. Give back!

A special thank you on this Veteran's Day to Robert and all the 10,000 Small Business alumni and their families who have served in the military, today and every day.

Frazier Glenn Cross Sentenced To Death For Jewish Site Shootings

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) -- A judge followed a jury's recommendation and sentenced an avowed anti-Semite to death Tuesday for the fatal shootings of three people at Kansas Jewish sites.

Johnson County District Judge Thomas Kelly Ryan imposed the sentence for Frazier Glenn Miller Jr., who was convicted of one count of capital murder, three counts of attempted murder, and assault and weapons charges for the April 2014 shootings in suburban Kansas City. The same jury that convicted him in August recommended that Miller be sentenced to death.

Miller said he shot his victims because he wanted to kill Jewish people before he dies. He suffers from chronic emphysema and has said he doesn't have long to live. A doctor testified during trial that Miller is ill and likely has five to six years left.

All three of his victims were Christians.

He killed William Corporon, 69, and Corporon's 14-year-old grandson, Reat Griffin Underwood, at the Jewish Community Center in Overland Park, Kansas. He then shot 53-year-old Terri LaManno at the nearby Village Shalom retirement center.

Also known as Frazier Glenn Cross Jr., Miller is a Vietnam War veteran who founded the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in his native North Carolina and later the White Patriot Party. He also ran for the U.S. House in 2006 and the U.S. Senate in 2010 in Missouri, each time espousing a white-power platform.

Miller, from Aurora, Missouri, represented himself at the trial and frequently disrupted procedures with outbursts at the judge, prosecutor and the jury. He said during his closing argument in August that he didn't care whether he was sentenced to death.

Kansas has nine other inmates on death row. Although the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976, Kansas waited nearly 20 years before reinstating it. And the state's current law is extremely narrow and allows for death sentences in only a handful of circumstances.

Five of the state's current death row inmates had their sentences overturned by the Kansas Supreme Court, but the cases have since been appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court or sent to lower courts for resentencing. The other three inmates have not had first rulings from the Kansas Supreme Court.
