Could 'The Host' Be the Next Epic Love Story? Patch Roswell, GA --

"The Host" is rated PG-13 and runs 125 minutes. See it this weekend at either Aurora Cineplex or Studio Movie Grill. For more theater information, show times and pricing, click the links above.

*The premise, courtesy of the film's official website:*

What if everything you love was taken from you in the blink of an eye? "The Host" is the next epic love story from the creator of the "Twilight Saga," worldwide bestselling author, Stephenie Meyer. When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about — Jared (Max Irons), Ian (Jake Abel), her brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and her Uncle Jeb (William Hurt), proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.

*Here's what critics are saying:*

On screen, it's just another chaste, action-starved and absurdly talky action romance. ... The action beats — chases, hunts, fights and shootouts — are few and far between here. Too many characters (William Hurt is Uncle Jeb, patriarch of the resistance) have to spend too much time on exposition —explaining who they are and how this Brave New World works. The young would-be lovers talk and talk and talk. — Roger Moore, Mercury News

By keeping everything else at a level best described as 'barely competent,' 'The Host' ensures the focus remains on the weird, intense, psycho-sexual underpinnings of the story. If you’re not on its wavelength, it’s just a clunky B-movie that can’t even get the basics of a decent alien invasion right. — Anthony Morris, The Vine

... 'The Host' is a bit loftier (than 'Twilight') in the message it’s trying to convey but for every inch the film moves forward in making a point about a peaceful society, the sappy romance elements drag it back a few feet.  Worse, the film has to overcome more than a few silly plot devices such as a character having an ongoing internal dialogue with a secondary personality living inside her head. — Joe, The MN Movie Man

There's not nearly enough action to begin with. A lot of times, I think action movies don't have enough character development. This movie has too much character development. ... It's over-long. By the end, you're just kind of bored and you can't wait for it to be over. — Becky Kirch, PopSugar

Enjoy Your Last Weekend Before Sales Tax Goes Up Patch Foster City, CA --

Enjoy the lower sales tax while you can - because it goes up on Monday.

On Monday, April 1, the base sales tax in San Mateo County goes up half a cent, as a result ofthe voter-approved Measure A, which appeared on the November, 2012 ballot.

The sales tax will rise from 8.5 percent to 9 percent in all cities and in the unincorporated areas, except in the cities of *San Mateo* and *Half Moon Bay*. As a result of voter-approved sales taxes in those cities, the sales tax will be 9.5 percent in Half Moon Bay and 9.25 percent in the city of San Mateo.

Measure A was placed on the November 2012 ballot by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. The tax, which "sunsets" after 10 years, is expected to raise approximately $60 million per year for "general fund purposes."

Much contention has brewed across the county in the past few months over how, exactly, the supervisors will spend the anticipated $60 million per year.

Some are upset that it seems Measure A is being treated as a "jail tax," since the county has already voted to spend anywhere from $145 to 160 million to build a new county jail in Redwood City - which is also expected to cost $30 million per year to operate once it's up and running.

Other ideas the supervisors have tossed around in their last few meetings include mental health intervention services - particularly advocated for in the wake of recent deadly mass shootings across the country like Aurora, Colo. and Newtown, Conn. - upgraded library programs, public art projects, a bicycle program coordinator, restoring an independent county parks department, and school safety.

Recently, the county solicited feedback from residents on how they think the Measure A funds should be spent.

Read the ballot statement and full text of Measure A here.

Whatever happens, this is the last weekend to shop or dine out with a lesser sales tax rate, so take advantage of it while you can! Be sure to visit *Patch's directory* for listings of local shops, restaurants and other businesses, if you're looking for something fun and local to do this weekend.

For a full listing of sales and use tax rates effective April 1 by county or city, visit the State Board of Equalization.

*What do you plan to do this weekend, before sales tax goes up? And, what do you think the Measure A funds should be spent on? *Tell us in the comments below. Reported by Patch 17 hours ago.

Volunteers Move Aurora Items After Fire Patch Lawrenceville, GA --

On Wednesday, Aurora Theatre volunteers hauled boxes and furniture and loaded them on to a truck. They were moving everything that had been spared following a fire in downtown Lawrenceville on March 4th.

The Lawrenceville theater had stored costumes, props and sets in a basement space on Crogan Street in the old Belk building. The fire resulted in smoke and water damage to an estimated $250,000 worth of the theater's items.

The stage sets and other items were stored temporarily in a basement space beneath Rock, Paper, Scissors. They would then be transported to another temporary storage site.

Aurora Theatre is still in need of a permanent place to keep the items and funds so they may rebuild their collection. Supporters are asked to purchase season tickets or donate to the theater's annual fund.

You can find more information about buying a season ticket or making a donation on their website, www.auroratheatre.com. Donations may also be mailed to:

Aurora Shooter Pleads Guilty To Avoid Death, Prosecutors Reject Plea

Aurora Shooter Pleads Guilty To Avoid Death, Prosecutors Reject Plea On March 27, Aurora theater shooter James Holmes entered a guilty plea to avoid the death penalty, but prosecutors believe it's a "publicity stunt" that "may violate gag orders the attorneys signed in the case."

In fact, prosecutors responded with a 12-page motion that denies that the plea constitutes a legitimate offer.

Instead the prosecutors believe defense attorneys could be trying to draw the court into a public spectacle surrounding plea negotiations.  Moreover, the prosecutors asked if the plea was filed as part of "a calculated attempt to improperly inject the issue" into public debate as well.

Doug Wilson, head of the Colorado Public Defenders Office, has suggested Holmes' defense attorneys "might not have told victims and families of the shooting that a plea offer was on the table."

Holmes faces charges for "166 felony counts of murder, attempted murder, and other felony charges." The next hearing is set for April 1. Reported by Breitbart 5 hours ago.

Prosecutors Want The Death Penalty For Colorado Shooter James Holmes Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for a former doctoral student accused of opening fire on a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colo., the Denver Post reports.

Lawyers for 25-year-old defendant James Holmes told a court late last month he'd plead guilty in order to avoid the death penalty.

"If the prosecution elects not to pursue the death penalty, it is Mr. Holmes' position that this case could be resolved April 1," defense lawyers wrote in a brief to the court.

Prosecutors were livid that Holmes' lawyers made the offer public and suggested it was just a ploy to get the public on their side.

Indeed, victims of the shooting — which killed a dozen people and injured a number of others — might not want the drawn-out case that could ensue if a plea deal isn't reached.

Pierce O'Farrill, who got shot three times, pointed out in an AP interview that the case could drag on for years.

"It could be 10 or 15 years before he's executed. I would be in my 40s and I'm planning to have a family, and the thought of having to look back and reliving everything at that point in my life, it would be difficult," he told the AP.

Lawyers for Holmes will likely pursue an insanity defense.

He was seeing a psychiatrist at the University of Colorado before he abruptly dropped out of its neuroscience doctoral program a few weeks before his his alleged rampage.
