Kitchen Manager Fired For Feeding Students Who Couldn't Afford Food

Della Curry was fired from her position as a kitchen manager at Dakota Valley Elementary School in Aurora, Colorado, after she gave school lunches to children who couldn’t afford food.

“I had a first grader in front of me, crying, because she doesn’t have enough money for lunch. Yes, I gave her lunch,” Curry said.

Curry doesn’t deny that she broke the law by feeding the children something other than the designated meal for low-income families, which consists of one slice of cheese on a hamburger bun, and a small milk. Still, she isn’t sorry for what she did. “The law needs to change,” she said.

In the Cherry Creek School District, students whose families make $31,000 annually qualify for a free lunch, but families that make less than $45,000 qualify for a reduced lunch. Though those numbers fluctuate depending on the size of the household, Curry said there’s a problem with that system.

“Kids whose parents make too much money to qualify, but a lot of times they don’t have enough money to eat,” she said.

The students she was fired for helping didn’t qualify for either program. It wasn’t the first time Curry helped a student in need - she told CBS4 that she’s paid for lunches before using her own money.

The Cherry Creek School District said they can’t discuss personnel issues, but added “anyone who has ever been terminated has violated some kind of written policy.”

Darnell Hill’s son goes to Dakota Valley Elementary School and Hill said that Curry helped his son when he forgot his lunch money. “Do something different than fire her. She’s trying to help.”

Curry understands why she was fired, but she hopes changes are made in the school district. “If me getting fired for it is one way that we can try to change this, I’ll take it in a heartbeat,” she said.

A Brevard County woman is facing DUI and child neglect charges after she allegedly was driving under the influence with her two young relatives in the backseat.A good Samaritan called 911 Sunday evening, terrified at what she was seeing while following 33-year-old Cherie Scott, who said Scott was driving erratically from the Pineda Causeway in Satellite Beach to Aurora Road in Melbourne."They almost hit the guardrail," the caller told dispatchers. "I can't even tell you all of the things they almost hit and caused accidents from."That good Samaritan told dispatchers that Scott was weaving in and out of traffic, narrowly missing cars, with two kids in the back seat."It's driving in and out of the traffic lanes. It's almost hit several cars. It's almost gone up on the curb several times. It's almost caused I can't even tell you how many accidents," she told dispatchers. "I've been following it, trying to get somebody to catch up with it. There are kids in the back of the car."Eventually the good Samaritan told dispatchers that she couldn't keep up with Scott any longer, but said she would gladly write up a police report when she was caught."Is it OK if I have an officer contact you if they need you," asked the dispatcher. "Absolutely," said the Good Samaritan. "I would one hundred, million, trillion love to make a report about this."Officers caught up to Scott a short time later, saying in their report that her eyes were glassy and her pupils were pinpoint size. When asked if she had been drinking, the Palm Bay woman said that she had one Long Island Iced Tea Sunday evening, but had taken prescription pills earlier in the day, according to her arrest report.Scott is currently being held at the Brevard County jail on a $1,000 bond.

School Kitchen Manager Fired For Giving Lunches To Students Without Money In Colorado

An elementary school kitchen worker was fired by a Colorado school district after she gave free lunches to kids who didn't have the money to buy them -- and she says she'd do it again.

Della Curry managed the kitchen at Dakota Valley Elementary School near Aurora, CBS reports. The school district says she violated policy when she gave lunches to children who didn't qualify for free or reduced meals. She was fired Friday.

While the district says on its website that it would never let a child go hungry, Curry says its standard option for students whose parents make too much to qualify for a reduced or free meal -- a slice of cheese on a hamburger bun and a milk -- isn't enough.

“I had a first-grader in front of me, crying, because she doesn’t have enough money for lunch. Yes, I gave her lunch,” the mother of two told CBS.

A family of four reportedly needs to make about $31,000 or less for its children to be eligible for free lunches, and below $45,000 for reduced lunches. An elementary school lunch is $2.80 per day in the Cherry Creek School District, which includes Dakota Valley.

Some of the kids who don't qualify for free or reduced lunches still don't have money to eat, and that's a problem, Curry said.

She said on her Facebook that the school itself "had no say in my termination," and she called for the school district and state to make changes to the lunch program.

"The staff at Dakota Valley are some of the most dedicated, caring, supportive and loving people I have ever had the honor of working with," she said. "This is just the jumping off point, if anyone has contacts within the school board, local and state government or anyone else that can help change this situation, please let me know!"

Cherry Creek School District released the following statement, according to CBS:
The law does not require the school district to provide the meal to children who have forgotten their lunch money, that is a district decision. According to our practice, we provide hot meals to students the first three times they forget their lunch money and charge their parents’ accounts. The fourth time, we provide a cheese sandwich and milk.

The district has worked to keep lunch prices low and still meet the federal nutrition requirements. The costs of our lunch program are not covered by the prices we charge. At the end of the year, any unpaid accounts revert back to the general fund which also covers instruction, security, building maintenance and overall operations.

In her weekly video blog, "Extreme Weight Loss" Medical Director, Holly Wyatt, MD describes this episode as a “bumps in the road” episode and says it’s one of her favorites. She says Josh and Kelli are good examples of how to work at overcoming unexpected life events.

Aurora, Colo. (PRWEB) June 03, 2015

Every episode of the hit ABC series “Extreme Weight Loss” Season 5 begins at the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colo. Holly Wyatt, MD is associate director of the center and medical director for the TV show. She is affectionately known as “Dr. Holly” to the show’s cast members and her patients.

Each week, Dr. Holly watches the show then records a video blog offering fans her insight plus advice on how to begin, or continue, their own weight loss transformation journeys.

Dr. Holly describes this episode as a “bumps in the road” episode and says it’s one of her favorites. Both Josh (Omaha, NE) and Kelli (Kansas City, MO) had faced huge unexpected challenges in their lives and they impressed Dr. Holly with how hard they worked to overcome them. In the end, Josh came to terms with the tragic death of his father and Kelli put the disappointing end of her college basketball career behind her.

http://youtu.be/f3ba43cC1co

Dr. Holly’s observations:·     Both Josh and Kelli were completely blind-sided by these huge and unexpected life events and when they didn’t ask for help     or work to get back on track, their lives and their weight spun out of control.
·     Watching Josh and Kelli finally take control, to bend but not break, to get back on course and rediscover their purpose reminded me that bumps in the road are a life lesson that we all must face and overcome.

Dr. Holly’s advice:·     Be ready for the bumps in your road. While you can’t control the unexpected you can control how you handle the situation.
·     Recognize when you hit a bump and draw on your own strengths and resources to persevere. Ask for help. Decide that you will do what it takes to get back on course.

Dr. Holly’s participation in the TV show inspired her to create the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center’s first destination weight loss program. The weeklong Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp is designed to provide participants with the tools they need to complete their own successful weight loss transformations— without the TV cameras! Limited space is available in upcoming boot camps and weight loss seekers are encouraged to learn more and register now.

The University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center is recognized as a global leader in the fight against obesity. It offers some of the country’s most advanced research and science-based expertise, focusing on a comprehensive weight loss and weight management approach, including fitness, nutrition and wellness services.
