Deb Stanaland from Edmond, Oklahoma, and Heather Spencer from Louisville, Kentucky Honored for Commitment to Family, Community

Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 08, 2015

American Mothers, Inc.®, a national non-profit dedicated to honoring and supporting mothers around the world, is proud to announce Deb Stanaland as the 2015 National Mother of the Year®, and Heather Spencer as the 2015 National Young Mother of the Year (given to those with children under age 18). The honorees were announced April 25, 2015 at the 80th annual American Mothers National Conference at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, DC.

Stanaland, the Chief Support Services Officer for YWCA Oklahoma City, is a tireless advocate for victims of domestic abuse throughout the state of Oklahoma. A domestic abuse victim herself, Stanaland is a certified Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Professional with a Professional Certificate in Victim Services, and also serves as Chair of the Oklahoma Crime Victims Compensation Board, appointed consecutively by two Governors. Through her efforts, thousands of Oklahoma women and children, including her own daughters, have been able to successfully escape abusive situations.

Spencer, from Louisville, is an example of the modern military wife and mother. While her husband, Greg, served multiple tours in Iraq, Heather managed to serve as the primary parent to their children, far from the comforts and assistance of family. The couple now resides in Prospect, Kentucky, where Heather is a full-time mother to their six children.

“American Mothers is very fortunate to be able to have these ladies representing us in our 80th year,” says American Mothers Inc. President Dianne Callister. “This was one of our largest nominee pools we’ve had the privilege of selecting from. Both Deb and Heather represent timeless motherly values - perseverance, courage, tireless dedication to those around them. Both of these ladies represent the best of mothers in America.”

Both honorees will serve as ambassadors for American Mothers, focusing particularly on the organization’s goal of raising awareness about human trafficking and domestic abuse facing women worldwide.

The honorees were selected from a field that included nominees from 49 of 50 U.S. states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. Each candidate for the national honor was required to proceed through a series of essays and committee evaluations before being selected.

The Mother of the Year honor has been awarded annually since 1935, when Sarah Delano Roosevelt presented Lucy Keen Johnson from Georgia as the first American Mother of the Year. Typhoon Noul Nears Philippines Stranding Thousands

MANILA, May 10 (Reuters) - Thousands of passengers were stranded in seaports and some domestic flights were canceled as Typhoon Noul strengthened further before its expected landfall in the northeastern tip of the Philippines on Sunday.
The typhoon was packing winds of up to 170 kph (105 mph), with gusts of up to 205 kph (125 mph), as it approached the rice-producing provinces of Isabela and Cagayan about 400 km (250 miles) north of the capital, Manila.
But the typhoon had shrunk significantly, with heavy to intense rains expected within a 150-km diameter, half the initial forecasts, and might bring storm surges of up to 1.5 meters over the eastern coasts of Isabela and Cagayan, the weather bureau said.
"It will almost just brush the country but it will bring strong winds," weather forecaster Fernando Cada said in a radio interview.
Noul, moving at 17 kph, was estimated at 140 km (85 miles) northeast of Casiguran, Aurora province.
But United Kingdom-based Tropical Storm Risk estimated the category 5 typhoon would skip Philippine provinces and veer north over the waters towards Japan. (http://bit.ly/18nzbrs)
More than 10,000 passengers and over 1,000 shipping vessels were stranded in various ports in the country, mostly along its eastern seaboard. Cebu Pacific canceled at least six domestic flights to northern Philippines.
Officials in northern Philippine provinces have alerted rescue units and positioned relief goods, as they prepared to move people away from low-lying and flood-prone areas.
"They are now ready there, but we will still augment, send reinforcement, so that they won't have any difficulty in case the size of the typhoon widens," Bonifacio Cuarteros, head of Cagayan province's disaster agency, said in a radio interview.
More than 11,000 residents were evacuated to temporary shelters in two towns around Mount Bulusan, a volcano in central Philippines that erupted twice last week, because of the danger of mud flows.
An average of 20 typhoons cross the Philippines annually, with the storms becoming fiercer in recent years. More than 8,000 people died or went missing and about a million were made homeless by Haiyan, a category 5 typhoon that struck the central Philippines in 2013.
