Carey Perloff has a second ACT with memoir 'Beautiful Chaos’

This may come as a surprise to the old faithful who still refer to San Francisco’s flagship theater as “Bill Ball’s ACT,” but Artistic Director Carey Perloff has been running the American Conservatory Theater for almost a half-decade longer than founder William Ball managed to do. [...] she does devote quite a bit of space to ruminating on and wrestling with — intelligently and passionately — many of the most important issues facing America’s large regional theaters in the 21st century: lack of funding for basic operating costs and actors’ salaries, the graying audience, the need for more women in leadership roles and more diverse programming, lack of support for training programs, and the decline of arts programming in the public schools and of the humanities in general at the university level (ACT is one of very few major theater companies that also runs a fully accredited master’s program). Despite its “A Life in the Theater” subtitle, “Chaos” isn’t a memoir so much as a book of essays that segue from autobiographical to increasingly issue-oriented, either spinning off from or illustrated by developments in her life or that of the theater she runs. [...] it gives her natural penchant for very intelligent, discursive discussion (as she acknowledges early on, she’s widely known as a “world-class talker”) free rein in literate digressions. Perloff is an engaging and personable narrator taking us through the story of her coming to ACT, tying in her childhood dance training and university passion for archaeology with her prior theater work — running New York’s much smaller Classic Stage Company — and her excitement and trepidation at taking on the much larger job at a major company still reeling from the earthquake that had destroyed its theater. The occasional humblebrag aside, she’s a delight retelling tales of the particular trials of trying to balance young motherhood with the all-encompassing demands of the theater, from overseeing a key development at ACT while giving birth, to the time when she was directing her first Harold Pinter play with the playwright, one of her idols, with her first-born baby hidden backstage (Jean Stapleton and Lauren Bacall play helpful supporting roles in that one). Oddly, though, as eloquent as she is about the particular challenges for women running theater companies, she doesn’t mention the situation in the Bay Area when she arrived. Sharon Ott leading Berkeley Rep to a regional theater Tony Award, Timothy Near at San Jose Rep, Mame Hunt at the Magic, Barbara Oliver founding the Aurora. When Perloff writes about major issues facing American theater, she tends to look nationally, as may befit the head of one of the country’s primary regional companies but seems not to take the particulars of the local cultural ecology into account. [...] as I can tell, this region’s other flagship theater, Berkeley Rep, gets only one glancing reference (“our colleagues across the bay”), even though, in early interviews, Perloff cited Ott as one of her role models. The end of her long and fruitful partnership with Sullivan’s successor, Heather Kitchen — with whom she got ACT’s Geary Theater home rebuilt and improved and weathered the Great Recession — is noted in passing, without any explanation. There are passionate and persuasive arguments for the need for arts in the schools, actors’ training and the development of what she calls “locavore theater,” as well as sharp looks at the tech-driven problems for companies trying to survive in San Francisco today. A 5-year-old Aurora, Colorado, boy is being credited with some quick thinking that saved his mom’s life on Monday.

KMGH News visited little Aydhun Byars and his mom, Tarah Gunderlock, recently, and during a videotaped interview (shown below) listened to Aydhun’s 911 call that got emergency personnel to his apartment.

"She's sleeping and she just opened her eyes and she never answers me," he can be heard telling the 911 dispatcher in the call.

That was at 5 p.m. on Monday. Gunderlock, a Type 1 diabetic, had gone into diabetic shock and was badly in need of assistance.

Aydhun told KMGH he remembered that his grandmother had shown him how to make an emergency call.

But even that was a feat the boy. Aydhun suffers from arthropyosis, Gunderlock said, a condition that has left him with slightly clubbed hands and feet and diminished motor skills.

Aydhun said he made the call because he didn’t know any other way to help his mom.

"I was a little scared but I was a lot calm," he said. “I just didn’t know what to do.”

"I don't know what mom is doing, but I need someone's help," he can be heard telling the operator in the call. "I don't know what apartment we live in, and I'm not tall enough to reach the doorknob.”

The operator dispatched the Aurora Fire Department to the apartment, according to ABC News.

Personnel with the department that spoke to ABC said they were able to administer the help Gunderlock needed and did not have to transport her to the hospital .

Gunderlock said that help came just in time and it’s all due to Aydhun making the call so quickly.

“He did it at the perfect time,” she told KMGH. “If he would have waited I would have had seizures, and that’s really scary.”

She called her son her “little superhero.”

"I told him, ‘You used your superpower,’” Gunderlock said. “He told me, 'My superpower is love.’”

Gateway Alcohol & Drug Treatment will host two expert-led CEU webinars in May to help healthcare and medical professionals better understand the relationship between grief and addiction. Participants will learn how to recognize symptoms and behaviors an individual who struggles with grief and addiction issues may exhibit. The treatment strategies and intervention techniques used in addiction treatment to help those who may be using substances to cope with grief and loss issues will also be covered.

Healthcare professionals may earn one continuing education credit compliments of Gateway while increasing their understanding of the close relationship between grief and substance use disorders. Gateway's webinars will only be offered Tuesday, May 19 and Thursday, May 28, 2015 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
