Unknown Virus Linked to Polio Affecting Children in the U.S.

Doctors around the country are currently investigating a mysterious illness that has affected more than 100 children in America and at least one in France.

The children affected have been taken to hospitals with weaknesses and paralysis in their arms and legs, known as acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), since last September.

However, doctors believe a second condition is causing the outbreak of AFP in their patients, which is sprung from simply coughing or sneezing.

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is known to be distantly related to polio and is spread from symptoms that one would experience with a common cold, such as sneezing and coughing.

In the cases of the children suffering from AFP, the enterovirus had affected the kids previously and may have caused the outbreak of paralysis in their limbs.

Researchers now believe that EV-D68 could be the reason for other unexplained cases across America and in France.  Dr. Samuel Dominguez, a top researcher on the case, said, “The extent to which this new distinctive neurological disease has spread is unknown, but it does not appear to be isolated to Colorado or the USA.”

Aurora, CO was one of the main centers for treatment where many of the children affected with AFP went to for care and research.

This is not the first time doctors have experienced polio-like conditions in children.  In 2012, five different cases from children residing in California tested positive for EV-D68.  There have also been numerous cases reported over the last several decades; however, none have created an outbreak and doctors have been able to keep the diseases under control.

National CyberWatch Center Hosts Ohio Cool Careers in Cybersecurity for Girls Workshops

National CyberWatch Center Hosts Ohio Cool Careers in Cybersecurity for Girls Workshop Event for middle school students featured hands-on activities and interactions with female cybersecurity professionals.

Steubenville, OH (PRWEB) February 11, 2015

The National CyberWatch Center K-12 Division, led by Educational Technology Policy, Research and Outreach (ETPRO), in partnership with the Steubenville City Schools, continued its national tour by welcoming one hundred public middle school girls to the Cool Careers in Cybersecurity for Girls TM Workshop on January 29, 2015.

Created to assist young women in learning the skills necessary to have a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the program creates a digital crime scenario to allow students to take a hands-on approach to solving instances of cybercrime. Students are also able to learn more about careers in cybersecurity from women employed in the field and take part in activities like cryptography, assembling a computer, cell phone forensics, learning about the education required and the salary ranges for careers in cybersecurity and other STEM fields.

“While women make up 50 percent of the workforce, females account for only a quarter of all STEM related personnel and only 10 percent of the cybersecurity workforce,” said Dr. Davina Pruitt-Mentle, founder of C34G and Director of the National CyberWatch Center K-12 Division. “Partnering with non- profits including schools, libraries, and higher education institutions, Cool Careers in Cybersecurity is addressing the gender gap directly by giving girls a glimpse at what careers in cyber are all about.”

While women in these careers have made progress over the last few decades, the number of women in these industries significantly lags behind males. Research has shown that up until grade three, girls and boys show an equal amount of interest in STEM areas of study, but that number drastically decreases as these young women move through middle and high school. Another issue is that women and minorities often have limited exposure to computers in youth, especially if they come from lower-income families. These seminars provide targeted programs to educate women on these job opportunities, and assist in recruiting and retaining young talent for science and technology fields.

“We were so excited to host the event. The girls loved the program! We even had some high school students requesting to attend as well. We don’t have many of these type of opportunities in our area so we were thrilled to partner with NCC” said Dr. Shana D’Aurora, Steubenville City Schools STEM Academy Director. “We are thrilled to continue partnering efforts with NCC to offer CyberSTEM summer camps and teacher professional development. We think this will be a great opportunity for our students.”

Cool Careers for Girls in Technology workshops began in 2001, and the Cool Careers in Cybersecurity for Girls Workshops began in 2005. Through funding from the National Science Foundation, the event has been held annually, impacting over 7500 middle school girls to date. Real Estate Scorecard Congratulates Currahee Club - 2015 Bliss Award Winner for Best Georgia Community of the Year

Real Estate Scorecard is the industry leader of online real estate reviews, keeping buyers informed about what's happening at the most popular master planned communities in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and in Central America.

Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) February 11, 2015

A picture says a thousand words and in the case of the Currahee Club, that’s when an inside glimpse into everyday life jumped off the pages of Facebook and captured Real Estate Scorecard's hearts. They've been following the Currahee Club Facebook Page since 2011 and it's been like looking through a treasured heirloom. Hundreds of photographs of families engaged in happy moments at one of the best golf communities. Residents over the last year have been enjoying art classes, professional cooking demonstrations, guest lectures, golfing events, day excursions and charity events at the club situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of Georgia.

The gated community was a sleeper for a while until a investment group out of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Arendale Holdings, found the ‘trophy property’ acquiring it in 2011 then bringing the community into ‘debt free’ status. Real Estate Scorecard has been monitoring the community since 2008. Over $65 million in resort amenities where already in place including a stunning mountain golf course designed by Jim Fazio. Then the recession hit in 2008 halting real estate sales across the nation. Hiring the best of talent, things began to drastically change when Andrew Ward, Managing Partner and President of Currahee and Susan Verlander, Director of Sales and Marketing joined the team taking over all things Currahee in late 2011.

To Real Estate Scorecard, Ward’s team brought ‘heart’ into the community, the kind Southerners are known for. A genuine hello, how's your family and watcha’ been up to? It’s not uncommon to be invited to impromptu pot luck dinners and wine tastings by neighborhoods. Currahee Club has amplified ‘southern living’ by organizing continuous events wrapped around food, enjoying the great outdoors, beautiful homes and club amenities. The 48,000 square foot clubhouse is one of the finest we’ve seen. The community garden offers up seasonal recipes in the birdhouse. Ward’s team hasn’t kept the fun all to themselves. They’ve engaged in the Toccoa community by partnering with local businesses, hosting events open to the public including a Symphony Orchestra Patriot Pops Concert and Farmer’s Market.

It’s been a great year for the Currahee Club. Southern Living Magazine hand selected the community as one of the founders of Southern Living Inspired Communities and rightfully so. The natural beauty and best of Southern Living inspired architecture compliments the incredible curb appeal. Deer Run Village is the newest neighborhood village with new, spacious cottage homes for sale in northern GA beginning around $400k, a price point Real Estate Scorecard has yet to see a real estate developer achieve in mountain communities. Membership fees are low at about $500 a month for full golf privileges and includes the POA fee. Social memberships with POA fees are $340 a month. A bargain in golf communities!

The club has been accumulating awards left and right in 2014:

Aurora Award - Custom Home Category for the 2013 Southern Living Custom Builder Home
Aurora Award - Recreational Facility Category for the Clubhouse
Aurora Award - Recreational Facility Category for the Currahee Sports Amenity Campus
2014 Club of the Year - Georgia Golf Owners/Operators Association
Bliss Award - 2014 Golf Community of the Year/Real Estate Scorecard

In 2013, Currahee Club was named Top 1000 Golf Course in the World by Rolex recognizing it as one of the best golf communities. To Real Estate Scorecard, the Currahee Club’s Facebook page reads like a ‘wall of happiness’. One property owner described life here:

“From the time we visited Currahee over 10 years ago, I felt it "click". From then on, I have called it "my happy place". Sitting on the back porch of the magnificent clubhouse, I feel my blood pressure immediately decrease. The peace and tranquility of the lake and mountain views are incomparable. I have heard Currahee Club's golf course described many times as "the most beautiful course and views I have ever seen" and "an awesome hidden treasure". Then there are the people. Staff, residents and members are the icing on the cake. There is a camaraderie that exists among everyone that makes you feel like part of a big family. I hate to miss a minute at Currahee Club. A new lifestyle has been created there that people need to experience. Currahee will capture your every sense.” There are 33 more heartwarming Currahee Club property owner reviews to read on Real Estate Scorecard's website just like this one.

The Currahee Club is a happy turn around story. Real Estate Scorecard honors the Currahee Club as the 2015 Best Georgia Community of the Year for their expertise, big hearts and for being a classic example of southern inspired communities in the state of Georgia.

Folks are invited to see for themselves and explore the homes for sale in northern GA by contacting the Currahee Club direct at 888.560.2582.

A 'big bang for the buck' 4 bedrooms/3.5 baths home just came onto the market on the 9th fairway walking distance to the clubhouse, fitness center, swimming pool and community garden. Ask Currahee Club for more info.

Don McEachern, CEO of community branding agency North Star Destination Strategies, will speak on the topic of putting a community’s reputation to work at the Illinois City/County Management Association (IILCMA) winter conference being held February 25-27 in Normal, Illinois.

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) February 12, 2015

Don McEachern, CEO of community branding agency North Star Destination Strategies, will speak on the topic of putting a community’s reputation to work at the Illinois City/County Management Association (IILCMA) winter conference being held February 25-27 in Normal, Illinois.

According to McEachern, in today’s highly-competitive global marketplace it’s critical that community leaders understand how to leverage an area’s reputation to attract positive economic growth.

“Every community has a reputation,” he explained. “But not every community has the tools at their disposal to affect what others are saying and build a successful place brand.”

McEachern will explore the unique role local government plays in place branding. Each community has a different set of strengths and challenges and for that reason there is not a “one-size fits all” solution. By examining the differences in focus, footprints and funding, McEachern will explain the pros and cons of different approaches.

North Star’s approach, applied in more than 200 communities nationwide, uncovers what others are saying about a place through quantitative and qualitative research tools. Gaining an understanding of a place through carefully considered research ultimately uncovers a community’s most distinct identity.

North Star has put several Illinois communities’ reputation to work for them in recent years, including: the Villages of Lake Bluff, Godfrey, and Oak Park as well as the cities of Highland Park and Aurora.

The Illinois City/County Management Association is comprised of over 700 members serving cities, villages and counties state-wide as well as those with an interest in local government management. Members strive to support and improve local government throughout Illinois. ILCMA’s winter conference explores strategies for “Cautious Optimism in Challenging Times.”

Nashville-based North Star Destination Strategies, established in 2000, is considered the leader in the field of research and branding for communities. Areas of emphasis include economic development, downtowns, tourism, and community-wide branding. In response to growing interest in business branding for communities, North Star has hired state-level ED experts including Rupa DeLoach, Director of Research. DeLoach served the state of Tennessee under numerous administrations heading up research efforts for the Department of Economic and Community Development.

A recognized expert in community branding, Don McEachern, CEO of North Star, is available to speak, present, or teach on a series of industry-related topics. Past speaking engagements have included the National League of Cities, the International City/County Management Association, the International Association of Business Communicators, the City-County Communications & Marketing Association, and the Florida Main Streets Conference among others.
