Astronauts on board the International Space Station recorded the stunning views of the Northern Lights meeting the light of a sunrise

For astronauts aboard the ISS, the sight of a sunrise is not a rare one. In fact, the ISS crew is rewarded with as many as 15 to 16 sunrises each day as the space station orbits our planet at a speed of more than 17,000 mph.

On Thursday, Commander Barry "Butch" Wilmore witnessed a particularly spectacular sunrise from his privileged vantage point at 220 miles above the Earth:

The ISS was passing over North America's eastern seaboard at night when the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, lit up the horizon with its green hue. The stunning view changed dramatically when the first light of the sunrise began to creep in and melt away the delicate aurora. Luckily for us mere mortals bound to the Earth's surface, Butch Wilmore not only managed to capture this beautiful sight on video, but also beamed it back to our planet, posting it to NASA's ISS Facebook page with the caption "#sunrise touches #aurora. Northern Lights Collide With Sunrise In Spectacular New NASA Video

Dreamy Northern Lights and a slow-moving sunrise are beautiful on their own, so just imagine what happens they collide.

A new NASA video released on Feb. 5 (above) shows a breathtaking view from the International Space Station of an aurora aligning perfectly with a faint sunrise on Earth's horizon. The city lights seen whizzing by beneath the spectacular celestial show belong to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, New York City, and Boston, the Washington Post reported.

"All we need now are angels singing," NASA astronaut Barry Wilmore, one of the five crew members now aboard the ISS, wrote in the video's caption on Vine.

The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, is a natural phenomenon caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field. The result, of course, is simply amazing. Reported by Huffington Post 2 days ago.

'The Lyons’ review: Family secrets enliven deathbed farce

$
0
0
Nobody is having a good time in Nicky Silver’s “The Lyons” — except for the audience, which laughs pretty much throughout the twists, turns and familial flare-ups in the exceptionally funny deathbed farce at the Aurora Theatre. What makes Silver’s scathing wit both more penetrating and oddly endearing is an underlying empathy with each of his all-too-flawed characters, even in an opening scene bristling with entrenched mutual marital harassment. Local treasure Will Marchetti sets the tone of long-suffering disgruntlement as patriarch Ben Lyon, his face screwed into an expression of perpetual offense as he lies dying in his hospital bed, listening to wife Rita (the brilliantly annoying Ellen Ratner) detail choices for redecorating the living room as soon as he’s gone. Family dynamics get more comically fraught with the arrival of each of their grown children, who haven’t been informed of their father’s fatal cancer. Jessica Bates’ lean, frazzled, endearingly self-dramatizing Lisa has enough to cope with, as a single mom in tenuous recovery from alcoholism, without her father’s deathbed critiques and her mother’s poison-pill comments about Lisa’s sons. Each family member has secrets, each of which twists or deepens the story, some to gasp-inducing comic effect. In one of Silver’s most delectably sure-handed scenes, one or more hidden layers of Curtis’ life and personality come out when we follow him beyond the sterile hospital room — in a cleverly executed shift of Eric Sinkkonen’s versatile set — for a meeting with an underemployed actor unhappily working as a real estate agent (a fine, tightly wound performance by Joe Estlack). [...] more layers emerge in confrontations with Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe’s sharp, imperturbable Nurse, who might deliver the play’s message. Reported by SFGate 2 days ago.
