'The Lyons’: Dark farce hits close to home for playwright Nicky Silver

'The Lyons’: Dark farce hits close to home for playwright Nicky Silver Nicky Silver’s “The Lyons” might seem an odd choice for the anchor production of Aurora Theatre’s annual Global Age Project festival, highlighting new works for the new millennium. [...] Artistic Director Tom Ross explains, It deals with alcoholism, spousal abuse, uncloseted and closeted gay lifestyles and, most importantly, the fear of face-to-face connection. Personally, I’m beginning to feel left out where he’s concerned. After Broadway, I can’t call you the bad boy of off-off-Broadway anymore. Maybe my second-ever professional production was at the Magic Theatre, “Fat Men in Skirts” (1991). Who wouldn’t be happy just spending the entire day in Gump’s? Who do you consider major influences? What led to this play? I just want to put people in a room and have them talk in real time. [...] I thought a patriarch dying — which is how the play opens, so it’s not exactly a spoiler — would force these people to deal with each other. By the time the play opened, he’d died. Every character I’ve ever written, with one exception, is some fragment of my own personality that I explode. The one exception was a character in “The Food Chain” who’s supposed to be incredibly beautiful, and I made sure he only had four lines. [...] this one, I’m all of the people in the play. Kutta Technologies Continues Development on Innovative Autonomous Aerial Cargo Unmanned Resupply System (AACUS)

Kutta Technologies announced today that they are a key member on the Office of the Naval Research’s (ONR) Autonomous Aerial Cargo Unmanned Resupply System (AACUS) team.

(PRWEB) January 30, 2015

Kutta Technologies announced today that they are a key member on the Office of the Naval Research’s (ONR) Autonomous Aerial Cargo Unmanned Resupply System (AACUS) team.

Kutta, working in partnership with Aurora Flight Sciences, developed the Human Machine Interface (HMI) technologies for the Main Operating Base (MOB) and Combat Outpost (COP). The application Kutta developed in the Phase I competition runs on a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) iPad Mini and allows a Marine in the field to request needed supplies and denote the actual locations of where to precisely drop them. Once the request for supplies is made, it is routed through the system and the software autonomously generates a safe route to the landing zones. The safe route takes into account terrain, the airspace allocated to the mission, and other mission-specific parameters to ensure a successful resupply. Once the unmanned resupply aircraft is within range, it scans the desired landing zone and negotiates with the COP operator to determine a suitable landing location.

All the HMI devices were developed using thorough human factors engineering design methodologies known as Cognitive Task Analysis. “Our goal was to design an intuitive user interface that allows an operator to accomplish a successful mission with only 15 minutes of training,” said, James Bona, Software Developer for Kutta Technologies. During the ONR flight demonstration, Kutta exceeded all HMI benchmarks and enabled the COP operator to flawlessly supervise 13 successful unmanned approaches and two planned wave-offs.

“Recently, Amazon® demonstrated a small unmanned aircraft in a controlled environment that someday may deliver books to your doorstep. We actually did it with a large helicopter, in winter condition, and with blowing snow. Our system could carry cases of books or medical supplies that could save lives. This is no longer a dream. The technology is possible today.” – said Doug Limbaugh, CEO of Kutta Technologies.

In the Phase 2, Kutta will integrate its Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifiable Ground Control Station known as the UGCS-178 into the MOB and further enhance the COP interface on an Android platform.

Kutta Technologies, Inc. is based in Phoenix, AZ and is a leading developer of high reliability mission-critical software and systems for the aerospace industry. Kutta’s product lines include: The Bi-Directional Remote Video Terminal (BDRVT®), Unified Ground Control Station (UGCS-178), Kutta Rugged Computer (KRC), and Manned / Unmanned Teaming Kit (MUM-178). Big Bucks, Frayed Nerves And Slow Progress As Death Spectacles in Boston, Aurora Drag On

0
0
Heather Abbott is wearing high heels again, and that's no small accomplishment.

Almost two years ago, when bombs ripped through crowds near the Boston Marathon finish line, Abbott, a 40-year-old human resources manager, lost her right leg below the knee. It took time, but now she goes stand-up paddle-boarding and has started a foundation to help other amputees.

Time hasn't been so kind to those who want to see 21-year-old accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev answer for his alleged crimes. Jury selection in the federal death penalty trial drags on, as it does across the country, in Colorado, where the state court trial of accused theater shooter James Holmes simmers in drawn-out jury selection.

A key reason for each trial's uncertain start date is the death penalty. While there are capital punishment advocates who want to see defendants in both cases pay the ultimate price, nobody denies that the slow progress frays nerves.

"I'm anxious for the whole thing to be over with," Abbott told HuffPost from Newport, Rhode Island. "It's almost two years [since the bombing] and that's a long time."

Tsarnaev faces a 30-count federal indictment, including 17 charges punishable by death, for his alleged role in the bombings that killed three and wounded 260, plus the fatal shooting of an MIT police officer.

Prosecutors' choice to seek the death penalty, numerous studies show, nearly guarantees that the trial will be far more expensive than If Tsarnaev were to face a maximum sentence of life without parole.

Unfolding in Colorado is the death penalty trial of James Holmes. He's accused of killing 12 and wounding 70 during a screening of "The Dark Night Rises" on July 20, 2012. From the start, his trial also is destined to be slow and costly.

"If the government is going to charge death, it's basically going to be running the meter at a much faster rate," said Jon Gould a professor at American University who's studied the costs of federal capital punishment trials.

Cases where federal prosecutors seek the death penalty cost eight times more than cases where the death penalty is permitted, but not sought, according to a 2010 study co-authored by Gould. In Colorado, a 2013 study found that capital trials there consume six times as many days in court than "comparable" cases with prosecutors seeking a sentence of life without parole. Increased resources for the defense and expert testimony are some areas that soak up more time and money.

These reports don't factor in the extra appeals and access to lawyers guaranteed to death row inmates.

One area making death penalty cases more expensive is jury selection, and lawyers in Tsarnaev's trial are deeply mired in this phase because of the case's unique complexities.

Jurors must be open to imposing capital punishment, even though it has been abolished for state crimes in Massachusetts and unpopular with voters. They must also grant Tsarnaev a presumption of innocence in the most-publicized domestic attack since 9/11 at a cherished Boston event. His older brother Tamerlan was killed during the brothers' getaway.

"Right off the bat, we have an uphill battle," said James Acker, a criminal justice professor at the State University of New York at Albany, about the jury selection phase of Tsarnaev's trial. "Many people are going to have a very tough time saying, 'I can render a verdict based on what I hear in court.'"

The terrorism trial already lags behind schedule. To find what's called 12 "death-qualified" jurors and six alternates, U.S. District Judge George O'Toole cast a wide net, with roughly 1,300 people from eastern Massachusetts filling out questionnaires on Jan. 5.

Lawyers' opening statements were tentatively planned for Jan. 26, but the sluggish pace of finding qualified jurors forced the court to push the date back.

"The process of selecting a jury is … progressing, but in the interest of thoroughness is taking longer than originally anticipated," Ginny Hurley, a coordinator for federal court in Boston, said in a statement on Jan. 22. "It is not possible yet to specifically target a new start date." Another two days were lost this week due to the blizzard that covered parts of New England.

The challenges of assembling a qualified jury is unfolding on a massive scale in Holmes' 166-count indictment.

Sorting through 9,000 prospective jurors started on Jan. 20 and may not be completed before June. In the end, there will be 12 jurors and 12 alternates for a trial that probably will stretch into the fall.

The trials of Tsarnaev and Holmes are distinguished by clear differences. For one, Holmes will be tried in state court in Colorado, where there's been strong public support for the death penalty. Another difference is that Tsarnaev, 21, has pleaded not guilty. Holmes' lawyers concede he was the gunman, but have pleaded their client not guilty by reason of insanity.

The extraordinary measures to seat juries for these cases foreshadow the heavy commitment of money and time to be poured into them until a verdict is in hand -- and beyond, if the trials result in the death penalty.

It's imbalanced to make comparisons to life-without-parole trials, some death penalty supporters say, because only the worst of the worst crimes are punished by death.

"I don't think that dollars should be the controlling factor when we're talking about justice," said Kent Scheidegger, lawyer for the pro-death penalty Criminal Justice Legal Foundation. "I don't think doing whatever is cheaper, when we're talking about the worst cases, is very convincing."

Avoiding a lengthy trial for either Tsarnaev or Holmes hasn't looked likely. One of Tsarnaev's attorneys, Judy Clarke, reached life-sentence plea deals for Ted Kaczynski, the so-called Unabomber, and Jared Loughner, the shooter who killed six and wounded former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona. But prosecutors in Boston don't appear interested in a similar offer. Prosecutors rejected an early guilty plea from Holmes to avert the death penalty.

It's tough to estimate the cost of these trials, as much of the information about spending is not publicly available, such as the budget set by the judge for Tsarnaev's public defenders. A gag order restricts information about Holmes' trial.

A Seattle University study published data this month showing death penalty trials cost $1 million more than life-without-parole cases in Washington. The public there, like residents in Massachusetts and Colorado watching the trials, should know how much prosecuting death penalty cases cost, said the report's co-author, Peter Collins.

"I want to know if they're being responsible with the money," Collins told HuffPost. "It's up for the voters and people we elect to decide."

Neal Communities Breaks Company Record in 2014 and Gears Up for Growth in 2015

Southwest Florida's powerhouse builder, Neal Communities, closes out a highly successful 2014 and projects even more growth in 2015.

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (PRWEB) January 31, 2015

Southwest Florida’s prolific, privately owned homebuilder Neal Communities (http://www.nealcommunities.com) broke new company sales records in 2014, selling 864 new homes, earning $276 million in revenue and pulling permits on over 500 homes in Manatee County alone.

This year, the homebuilder also hit a major milestone by delivering more than 10,000 homes to families in Florida since its inception in 1970.

“We experienced several factors this year that contributed to our record-breaking success,” said Pat Neal, CEO and founder of Neal Communities. “Historically low mortgage rates and 42 percent of home buyers paying with cash equals a strong southwest Florida market.”

“We also started to see smaller down-payment options begin to re-emerge into the mortgage market and slowly saw wages move up,” said Neal. “National factors like the threat of a government shut down and higher interest rates certainly affected the homebuilding industry, and we are slightly under where we thought we would be for the year. Nonetheless we still had exceptional results in 2014, which we are proud of.”

Neal Communities opened nine new communities in 2014 from Manatee to Collier counties and expects to unveil eight in the first quarter of 2015, starting a five-year expansion plan.

“Excluding four communities currently under construction in Hillsborough County, we have 29 communities currently selling homes,” said Neal.

Clearly the No. 1 homebuilder by the numbers in Manatee and Sarasota counties, the builder’s growth in its core Manatee market has fueled the county’s economic development with the addition of 70 new employees. The firm paid impact fees totaling more than $6.5 million in 2014.

“In Manatee County, we have a 20 percent market share, which is almost unheard of across the nation,” said Michael Storey, president of the Lakewood Ranch-based company. “Typically a homebuilder looks for 5 percent market penetration in a major metro market; the fact that we’ve had such a high share and maintained it for so long is a testament to our dedicated and hard-working team, and to the strength of our always-evolving home product and community lineup,” said Storey.

In Manatee County, Neal sold 490 homes this year, with 190 homes sold in Sarasota and 184 homes sold in its southern division of Lee and Collier counties.

The builder launched Neal Land Ventures and acquired approximately $34 million in land assets and invested a total of $89 million in new development when completed.

“We brought 1,300 new homesites online,” said Storey. “We are gearing up for tremendous growth over the next five years.”

That growth will include opening new communities in its core market in 2015 and selling more homes in Hillsborough County. “While our business plan for our southern division was to buy land and develop it into new communities, in Hillsborough we are buying homesites in already established communities,” said Storey.

Storey noted that three years ago, the 25-44 age demographic was about 12 percent of Neal’s business, but in 2014 it grew to 20 percent. “That buyer is slowly starting to come back to the market, so there is more opportunity for growth, and as we expand into Hillsborough, that’s a buyer we’ll look to attract in addition to our core segment of active adults or older people with active lifestyles (OPALS).”

Moving ahead into the New Year, Neal Communities’ leaders expect a continued robust housing market. “I think we will see volumes increase and pricing appreciate in 2015. What works best for us is slow, sustainable, predictable growth. And if we can stay in that space in 2015, we see a continued housing recovery,” said Storey.

Neal Communities was named one of 2012's "America's Best Builders" by BUILDER Magazine and voted the “2013 Best Residential Builder in Southwest Florida” in a readers’ poll sponsored by Gulfshore Business Magazine. The company is ranked No.1 locally by Metrostudy and by Hanley Wood Market Intelligence based on number of home sales and ranked among the top 50 national homebuilders by BUILDER Magazine. To date, Neal has built over 10,000 homes in Southwest Florida. As the area's largest and most established, locally owned and operated private builder, Neal Communities is continually striving for excellence in every aspect of the homebuilding and development business. Neal Signature Homes, Neal Land Ventures, Charlene Neal PureStyle, Waterscapes Pools & Spas and Allegiant Title Professionals all contribute to the firm's continued, record-setting local success. The company's honors and accolades include 42 Parade of Homes 2014 awards, 50 Aurora Awards, 5 Best in American Living Awards and hundreds of local and regional industry awards. Rapid Expansion Leads to 60 New Hires at Southwest Florida Based Neal Communities

Powerhouse new homebuilder, Neal Communities, continues to add to its award-winning team of professionals.

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (PRWEB) January 31, 2015

Record-breaking sales and growth have been accompanied by a rapid expansion of the workforce at Neal Communities, Southwest Florida’s premier homebuilder. Since the beginning of 2014, Neal has added 60 new employees—and are now making a major civic and economic contribution to their communities.

Overall, the Neal team sold a company record 864 new homes in 2014, earning $276 million in revenue and opening nine new communities from Manatee County to Collier. Such astounding figures allowed Neal to hire 52 new employees in 2014, with eight more jobs filled in the first two weeks of 2015. Those numbers represent a greater than 20 percent increase in the company’s workforce, with more soon to come.

Additionally, Neal is currently interviewing candidates for four more positions in its southern division, with six more scheduled to open up later this year.

The hiring initiative sets the stage for what the company expects to be an even more successful 2015, the first in an ambitious five-year growth plan. Neal will add eight new communities in the first quarter of 2015, four of them in Hillsborough County, the first new Hillsborough homes in Neal’s 44-year history. The company is also adding three new communities in Lee County this year.

The new employees augment Neal’s already-deep team, which now includes 220 full-time employees in homebuilding and real estate and 208 in the golf and hospitality sector.

“2015 is shaping up as an exceptionally strong and exciting year for us,” says Pat Neal, the CEO and founder of Neal Communities, “and we need a team that can help us meet spiking demand. We always invest in the very best people we can find, and our new additions are highly capable, enthusiastic and hardworking. They’re leaders within the company, and in their communities.”

In addition to the company’s direct employees, Neal projects also provide work for between 500 and 600 employees of the company’s partners and contractors, providing roughly $13 million in direct employment and $60 million in indirect employment. In 2014, the company paid approximately $6.5 million in property taxes, $9 million in sales taxes and $10 million in impact assessments to local governments.

“Those numbers show what a major contribution Neal Communities makes to the communities in which we work,” Neal says. “Our team builds and sells outstanding, beautiful homes in Florida, leading to huge investments in schools, public works and infrastructure, creating hundreds of jobs and making a long-lasting impact on local economic development. I’m proud to be a part of it.”

National CyberWatch Center Hosts Ohio Cool Careers in Cybersecurity for Girls Workshop

Event for middle school students featured hands-on activities and interactions with female cybersecurity professionals

Steubenville, OH (PRWEB) February 02, 2015

The National CyberWatch Center K-12 Division, led by Educational Technology Policy, Research and Outreach (ETPRO), in partnership with the Steubenville City Schools, continued its national tour by welcoming one hundred public middle school girls to the Cool Careers in Cybersecurity for Girls™ Workshop on January 29, 2015.

Created to assist young women in learning the skills necessary to have a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the program creates a digital crime scenario to allow students to take a hands-on approach to solving instances of cybercrime. Students are also able to learn more about careers in cybersecurity from women employed in the field and take part in activities like cryptography, assembling a computer, cell phone forensics, learning about the education required and the salary ranges for careers in cybersecurity and other STEM fields.

“While women make up 50 percent of the workforce, females account for only a quarter of all STEM related personnel and only 10 percent of the cybersecurity workforce,” said Dr. Davina Pruitt-Mentle, founder of C34G and Director of the National CyberWatch Center K-12 Division. “Partnering with non-profits including schools, libraries, and higher education institutions, Cool Careers in Cybersecurity is addressing the gender gap directly by giving girls a glimpse at what careers in cyber are all about.”

While women in these careers have made progress over the last few decades, the number of women in these industries significantly lags behind males. Research has shown that up until grade three, girls and boys show an equal amount of interest in STEM areas of study, but that number drastically decreases as these young women move through middle and high school. Another issue is that women and minorities often have limited exposure to computers in youth, especially if they come from lower-income families. These seminars provide targeted programs to educate women on these job opportunities, and assist in recruiting and retaining young talent for science and technology fields.

“We were so excited to host the event. The girls loved the program! We even had some high school students requesting to attend as well. We don’t have many of these type of opportunities in our area so we were thrilled to partner with NCC,” said Dr. Shana D’Aurora, Steubenville City Schools STEM Academy Director. “We are thrilled to continue partnering efforts with NCC to offer CyberSTEM summer camps and teacher professional development. We think this will be a great opportunity for our students.”

Cool Careers for Girls in Technology workshops began in 2001, and the Cool Careers in Cybersecurity for Girls Workshops began in 2005. Through funding from the National Science Foundation, the event has been held annually, impacting over 7500 middle school girls to date. More details on Cool Careers in Cybersecurity for Girls can be found at: http://www.edtechpolicy.org/cyberk12/ and http://www.coolcareersforgirls.org/ Reported by PRWeb 1 day ago.
