The world's best places to see auroras

*Emily Bills for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online*

"Seeing the aurora borealis" has been topping bucket list charts for years, and this year may be the best time to go. The aurora works in an 11-year cycle, and this winter lands in a highly active time period within that cycle.

Because it’s so active right now, you might not have to travel far. It’s just hard to know exactly where to go to get your slice of the celestial action. So, being the space fans that we are, we've compiled our top ten list of places you are most likely to see the Northern Lights this winter. Grab your woolies!

* 1. Svalbard, Norway*
Generally, the higher north you go, the better your chances are at seeing the Lights. And because this little group of islands in Norway lands above the Arctic Circle, it’s about as north as you can get. Svalbard is also known for its Polar Nights that occur from November into January when the islands are completely without daylight. The lack of daylight and its extreme northern position on the globe launches Svalbard into the number one spot on our list.

*2. Jukkasjärvi, Sweden*
This quaint town is in Northernmost Sweden and houses the famous Ice Hotel where you can stay in an Aurora Borealis themed room. From there you can head over to the nearby Aurora Sky Station in Abisko to get your view on. Because this site is at 900 meters above sea level, and far from any light pollution, you just might see an aurora dancing overhead.

*3. Fairbanks, Alaska*

This town boasts the Chena Hot Springs resort 60 miles away from any heavy light pollution of the city. Chena is located directly under the auroral band of activity that is more active in the winter months because of the longer nights and crystal clear air. Usually if it’s a clear night, the aurora can be seen shimmering between 10 pm and 4 am. If you aren’t awake during the wee hours of the morning, those staying at the hotel are offered aurora wake-up calls so they won’t miss a thing.

*4. Kangerlussuaq, Greenland*
Greenland is perfectly settled into the aurora oval and paired with its nearly perfect skies, if you stay for 3-4 nights you are almost guaranteed to see an aurora. Kangerlussuaq used to be a U.S. military base and counts auroras more than 300 times per year. Be sure you plan your trip according to the sun’s patterns. The Lights rely on solar activity, and because the sun rotates on its axis once every 27 days, the next few weeks after a spectacularly bright show might be duller.

[/caption]

* 5. Churchill, Canada*
While this spot is most known for its polar bears, it’s also an excellent place for aurora seekers. The town sees auroras more than 300 nights a year. Because of its high auroral activity, you may see some of the more rare colors of the aurora. Reds, violets, and the most rare blues occurring from nitrogen entering the atmosphere can intertwine with the otherworldly green color to create breathtaking drapes of color.

[caption id="attachment_111331" align="aligncenter" width="617" caption="Credit: Thinkstock"]
[/caption]

*6. Yukon, Canada*
The Yukon Territory in Canada is located in the same band of activity--the Aurora Oval--that sweeps through Fairbanks, Alaska. The specific city of Whitehorse in Yukon boasts the best aurora viewing spot in that area according to Canadian Geographic. Most of the Northern Lights tours and museums are located here, and the town is also known for its Takhini hot springs that you can relax in while you wait for the sky show.

[caption id="attachment_111331" align="aligncenter" width="617" caption="Credit: Thinkstock"]

7. Urho Kekkonen National Park, Finland
Located about 155 miles north of the Arctic Circle you will find Finland’s biggest National Park. Just a stone’s throw away is the incredibly unique Kakslauttanen Resort where you can stay in a glass igloo and look for the faint glow of the beginning of a light show from the comfort of your own bed. The Lights make an appearance in northern Finland more than 200 nights a year.

[caption id="attachment_111331" align="aligncenter" width="617" caption="Credit: Thinkstock"]
[/caption]

8. Reykjavik, Iceland
Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland and hosts one of the most renowned hotels for seeing the aurora, Hotel Rangá. Located in the countryside, it was the first hotel in the country to offer aurora wake-up calls because they are so easy to see with the minimal light pollution. A webcam on the hotel’s website offers proof of the iridescent greens, pinks, and purples that regularly streak across the sky. Need more incentive? A few miles away sits a Northern Lights Bar complete with dimmed lighting and wrap-around windows where you can sip and watch.

[caption id="attachment_111331" align="aligncenter" width="617" caption="Credit: Thinkstock"]
[/caption]

*9. Caithness, Scotland*
In February of last year, the coast of Caithness in the far North of Scotland was hit with extremely high auroral activity. While all of Scotland has a chance of viewing the aurora because of its latitude, Caithness often lands itself in the aurora band.

[caption id="attachment_111331" align="aligncenter" width="617" caption="Credit: Thinkstock"]
[/caption]

*10. Cherry Springs State Park, Pennsylvania*
An expensive trip out of the country is not always needed to see the Northern Lights. Isolated from any big city, this state park is a Gold Level International Dark Sky Park (the highest rating you can get). The park uses special lighting that does not affect the quality of darkness and there are strict rules regarding headlights and flashlights. While it’s not located in the auroral band, on nights of exceptionally high activity, it is not unheard of to see the Lights here.

Jury Selection Begins In Colorado Theater Shooting Trial

By Keith Coffman and Daniel Wallis
CENTENNIAL, Co., Jan 20 (Reuters) - The first of some 9,000 potential jurors will report to court in Colorado on Tuesday as selection begins for the trial of James Holmes, the former neuroscience graduate student who killed 12 people in July 2012 at a midnight screening of a Batman movie.
Holmes, 27, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to 166 charges of murder, attempted murder and explosives offenses. He was arrested wearing a gas mask, helmet and body armor at the scene of the shooting rampage, in which 70 people were also hurt.
His lawyers say Holmes was suffering a "psychotic episode" at the time. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
Jury selection may take up to four months as Arapahoe County District Court Judge Carlos Samour seeks to narrow the large field to a panel of 12 jurors and 12 alternates.
So many people were summoned because of the difficulty expected in finding an impartial jury for such a high-profile, emotive case. Each will be questioned about their views on topics including insanity defenses and the death penalty.
Holmes, who first appeared in court in the days after the shooting looking dazed and with his hair dyed red-orange, is expected to be back in a courtroom at the Arapahoe County Justice Center on Tuesday afternoon when the first group of 250 are addressed by the judge, watch a video on jury duty, and fill out questionnaires.
The trial has been delayed several times, mostly by wrangles over the Southern California native's state of mind when he opened fire with a handgun, shotgun, and semi-automatic rifle inside the crowded premier of "The Dark Knight Rises" film at the Century 16 multiplex in Aurora, an eastern suburb of Denver.
Holmes has undergone two-court ordered sanity exams since his arrest. They have produced dozens of hours of video and thousands of documents, all sealed by the judge, but according to court papers they provided conflicting results.
At a preliminary hearing in January 2013, prosecutors gave a preview of the evidence that will be used against him at trial.
First responders testified to horrific scenes in the body-strewn theater 9, where blood pooled on the floor and the movie still played, its soundtrack blaring. A fire alarm rang, strobe lights flashed, and wounded victims screamed.
One policeman said he initially mistook Holmes for a fellow officer because the gunman was wearing body armor, but that he realized it was not police issue gear and he saw that Holmes was acting oddly. He was ordered to the ground and handcuffed.
Another officer testified that when Holmes was then asked whether he had an accomplice, he replied: "No, it's just me."
