The Science Of Magnetic Reconnection

*Provided by Karen C. Fox, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center*

Understanding vast systems in space requires understanding what's happening on widely different scales. Giant events can turn out to have tiny drivers -- take, for example, what rocked near-Earth space in October 2003. On Oct. 28, 2003, and again on Oct. 29, massive solar flares erupted on the sun, sending X-rays zooming through the solar system. Along with the flares, the sun expelled giant clouds of solar material, called coronal mass ejections, or CMEs. The CMEs slammed into Earth's magnetic field pushed material and energy in toward Earth. This created what's called a geomagnetic storm.

*[ Watch the Video: MMS Science Overview: The Many Mysteries Of MMS ]*

The Halloween Storms, as they have come to be called, triggered brilliant aurora that could be seen over much of North America -- reaching as far south as Texas. But they also interfered with GPS signals and radio communications, and caused the Federal Aviation Administration to issue their first ever warning to airlines to avoid excess radiation by flying at low altitudes.

Every step leading to these intense storms -- the flare, the CME, the transfer of energy from the CME to Earth's magnetosphere – was ultimately driven by the catalyst of magnetic reconnection. This little understood process can occur in thin layers just miles thick. Yet it can accelerate particles up to nearly the speed of light and can initiate giant eruptions from the sun many times the size of Earth. The effects of reconnection have been observed in space, but the actual reconnection process has only been observed in the laboratory.

In March 2015, NASA will launch a new mission to study magnetic reconnection. The Magnetospheric Multiscale, or MMS, mission will be the first ever mission dedicated to studying this universal process by orbiting Earth to pass directly through nearby magnetic reconnection regions and to observe the minute details of such events.

Reconnection occurs wherever charged gases, called plasma, are present. It's rare on Earth, but plasma makes up 99% of the visible universe. Plasma fuels stars and fills the near vacuum of space. Plasmas behave unlike what we regularly experience on Earth because they travel with their own set of magnetic fields entrapped in the material. Changing magnetic fields affect the way charged particles move and vice versa, so the net effect is a complex, constantly-adjusting system that is sensitive to minute variations.

Under normal conditions, the magnetic field lines inside plasmas don't break or merge with other field lines. But sometimes, as field lines get close to each other, the entire pattern changes and everything realign into a new configuration. The amount of energy released can be formidable. Magnetic reconnection taps into the stored energy of the magnetic field, converting it into heat and kinetic energy that sends particles streaming out along the field lines.

Scientists want to know exactly what conditions, what tipping points, trigger magnetic reconnection events. Much of what we currently know about the small-scale physics of magnetic reconnection comes from theoretical studies, computer models, and laboratory experiments. True understanding, however, requires observing magnetic reconnection up close – so MMS will take its measurements in Earth's own magnetosphere, an ideal natural laboratory in which reconnection can be observed under a wide range of conditions.

Orbiting Earth, MMS will pass through known areas of magnetic reconnection. During its first phase it will travel through reconnection sites on the sun side of Earth. Here the interplanetary magnetic field connects with Earth's magnetic field, transferring particles, momentum and energy to the magnetosphere via magnetic reconnection. During the second phase of its mission, MMS will observe reconnection on the night side of Earth, where that connected field flows around both sides of Earth to a second reconnection point in what's known as the magnetotail, where they then disconnect.

These reconnection sites are so thin, that MMS will fly through them in under a second -- but the MMS sensors have been built to be fast, operating at unprecedented speed. As the spacecraft fly through such a site, they will measure the magnetic and electric fields present as well as the movement of particles.

Armed with this data, scientists will have their first chance to watch magnetic reconnection from the inside, right as it's occurring. By focusing on the small-scale process, scientists open the door to understanding what happens on larger scales throughout the universe. Determining how reconnection occurs nearby will improve our understanding of how this fundamental process works on the sun, on other stars, throughout space -- and, of course, it will teach us more about giant geomagnetic storms like the Halloween storms, thus helping us safeguard our home planet Earth.

American Sentinel University details reasons why nurses benefit from earning MSN degree online to expand their career opportunities and professional growth. Learn more about American Sentinel’s online MSN degree programs at http://www.americansentinel.edu/nursing/m-s-nursing

AURORA, Colo (PRWEB) December 11, 2014

American Sentinel University, an accredited career-focused online university, details reasons why it makes sense for nurses to earn a Master of Science Nursing (MSN) degree online to expand their career opportunities and professional growth.

“Opportunities for advanced practice nursing continues to grow,” says Elaine Foster, Ph.D., MSN, RN, associate dean, graduate nursing programs at American Sentinel University. “For nurses who have an RN license and earned a BSN, a master’s degree is a natural next step. It allows nurses to apply their professional interests, medical knowledge and clinical skills as they lead nursing teams, and mentor the next generation of nurses.”

Dr. Foster says if a nurse plans to move into management, an MSN is quickly becoming the minimum education they’ll need to earn that promotion. And for nurses who want to specialize in fields like case management, informatics, or infection prevention and control, an MSN degree can provide them with the specialized knowledge that employers are seeking.

She points out that many nurses face obstacles when they decide to pursue an advanced nursing degree, especially when they are immersed in a full-time job; however, earning an advanced degree online is much less intimidating, and lot more flexible than most think.

“Going back to school takes dedication and commitment for working nurses, but earning an MSN is more convenient than ever, thanks to accredited, high-quality online programs,” says Dr. Foster.

An online nursing degree is beneficial for the following reasons:

-Convenience. Most online degree programs aren’t bound by a traditional academic calendar so that a nurse can manage their schedule in a way that’s convenient for them.

-Flexibility. Online learning is a perfect fit for nurses currently working full-time or managing family obligations while attending school. Students can manage their schedule and take courses as their schedule allows.

-Choice. Online learning has no geographic boundaries, so students can choose a school and the MSN program that best suits their needs, without having to leave their community or home.

-Time savings. Nurses may be able to complete an online MSN more quickly than they could in a traditional classroom setting. Courses at American Sentinel are eight weeks in length and many of the courses start monthly.

-Affordability. An online MSN program may cost less than a degree obtained in a brick-and-mortar classroom. In addition, students won’t have commuting costs when they attend school online.

Many schools offer assistance with financial aid, while some employers may offer tuition reimbursement. “American Sentinel has educational partnerships with many large healthcare systems, which means you won’t have to pay with your cash upfront and wait to be reimbursed,” says Dr. Foster.

-Accredited. American Sentinel’s MSN degree programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a specialized professional accreditation agency, the CCNE is an autonomous branch of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the only accrediting body devoted to exclusively to evaluating baccalaureate and graduate nursing degree programs.

-Adult learning model. With the current push for nurses to advance their education, large numbers of nurses in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are returning to school – so online MSN programs have evolved to meet the needs of experienced nurses who may have years of clinical experience under their belts.

-Supportive environment. Most online MSN programs provide a wealth of resources to keep students motivated and on track.

“At American Sentinel, our student success advisors are well acquainted with our nursing coursework and can help to guide students with one-on-one help as they become comfortable with distance learning,” says Dr. Foster.

-Engagement. Current technologies make online learning a rich and engaging experience, through virtual lectures, multimedia content, and message boards.

“American Sentinel has a highly interactive learning system. Our students can interact with professors through e-mail, by phone, and in weekly group discussion forums – as well as engage with other MSN students in the classroom and through social networks like Facebook,” says Dr. Foster.

-Real-world applications. Online MSN programs are often specialized, with healthcare material that is current and industry relevant. Working students gain more experience and find ways to apply new skills and knowledge immediately to their current job to put themselves in a position for promotion.

-General advancement. Nurses working toward their MSN degree learn advanced leadership and communications skills that prepare them for nursing management positions.

It’s clear that an MSN degree is becoming more and more valuable for nurses interested in rewarding careers. A master’s degree can help lead to many career opportunities that are not available to nurses with an associate or bachelor’s degree.

“A master’s degree opens the door to advanced practice nursing and helps distinguish a nurse as the most qualified candidate for management and teaching positions,” says Dr. Foster. “Moreover, earning an advanced degree show nurse managers just how dedicated you are to play an important role in improving patient outcomes.”

American Sentinel University offers accredited, online MSN degree programs with focused coursework that helps prepare nurses for a career in case management, infection prevention and control, nursing education, informatics, and nursing management and organizational leadership.

CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center announces limited dates for weight loss transformation programs

Aurora, Colo. (PRWEB) December 11, 2014

For many, the new year brings weight loss resolutions and the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colo., is ready to help. The center’s new transformative weight loss program Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp will offer three Chapter 1 boot camps in 2015: March 22-28, June 14-20, and July 26-August 1.

Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp, a collaboration between the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center and Eyeworks USA, is an evidenced-based program inspired by the unscripted ABC-TV series “Extreme Weight Loss” documenting show participant’s year-long weight loss transformations. Cast members in seasons four and five (set to air next spring) spent the first 90 days of their successful weight loss journeys at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center.

Participants in Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp spend a week at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center learning a unique approach to weight loss that emphasizes mindset and teaches the tools to a successful lifestyle transformation. Hotel accommodations and meals are provided.

At the conclusion of boot camp, participants head home and have the option to continue their weight loss transformation with online classes and a transformation coach in Chapters 2, 3 and 4 for a full year of support.

Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center is designed for anyone who is ready to replace fad dieting with long-term weight loss transformation success. Information about boot camp sessions can be found online or by calling 844-404-2008.

October marked the successful— and sold out— launch of Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp. The 130 participants who attended from across the United States and Canada found the experience so impactful that more than 92% signed up to continue their transformation journey at home with Chapter 2 of the program.

Kenny Frazee, a 55-year-old insurance fraud investigator came to October’s Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center close to 100 pounds overweight. “There’s no doubt in my mind that I got to be with the best staff anywhere on the planet,” Frazee said. “Never in my life have I had a better experience, learned more or had so much fun. I can’t stop thinking about it.”

Frazee is continuing his weight loss transformation with Chapter 2 at home in New Jersey.

Holly Wyatt, MD, associate director of the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center and the medical director on “Extreme Weight Loss,” is a guiding force on the TV show, along with series trainers Chris and Heidi Powell, in helping the show cast members safely lose weight. In her practice at the center, Wyatt also works with individuals and small groups to help them transform their lives through weight loss.

“I was inspired while helping the participants on the TV show make a commitment to a new life-style,” said Wyatt. “Now, those who attended our first Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp have made the same commitment. Many of the changes they make have little to do with diet and exercise; it’s more about a positive mindset shift.”

The program is based on principles outlined in “State of Slim”, written by Wyatt and James O. Hill, PhD, the center’s executive director which include: identifying your personal “why” for losing weight, focusing on positive aspects of weight loss, creating a supportive environment and developing new habits to make healthy decisions.

“We have 30 years of experience and science-based research backing up the principles we share with program participants,” said Wyatt. “In addition to looking at nutrition and exercise, we assess individual metabolic function, sleep and stress levels and explore the psychology behind a successful weight loss transformation.”

The University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center has entered into a licensing agreement with Eyeworks USA for its new destination boot camp weight loss program. This collaboration between the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center and Eyeworks USA is inspired by the popularity of the unscripted television series “Extreme Weight Loss” which is produced for the ABC Television Network by Eyeworks USA and is executive produced by JD Roth, Todd A. Nelson, Matt Assmus and Brant Pinvidic.

Collette Liantonio launched Concepts TV Productions Inc. in 1983. Since then, she has produced over 3,000 commercials and infomercials, many of which have become advertising legends, including: AmberVision Glasses, Bedazzler, and The George Foreman Grill. She has also worked with some of the top talent in the industry, producing spots featuring Montel Williams, Joe Namath, George Foreman, Fabio and Wayne Gretsky, among many others.

Liantonio has been a direct response television (DRTV) industry leader for over 30 years. She has won countless ERA Moxie Awards (recognizing the best campaigns of the year), Aurora Awards (international television advertisements), and Telly Awards (honoring the best television commercials and programs), among others. She produces commercials in a range of important categories including fitness, toys, beauty, hair, pets and housewares.

Prior to starting Concepts TV, Liantonio was a single parent who found time to become a successful freelance writer after earning a masters of arts in directing from NYU. When a client purchased a direct response company and invited her to direct a commercial, Liantonio jumped at the opportunity. She worked for an advertising agency in Manhattan for a brief time before signing her first client to start Concepts TV Productions.

Liantonio is on Electronic Retailing Magazine's Advisory Board and has served twice on the Electronic Retailing Association's (ERA) Board of Directors. In 2014, she co-founded the Broadcast Council of the Direct Response Marketing Association and was elected into the 2014 Direct Response Marketing Association's Hall of Fame. *How has your life experience made you the leader you are today? *
My career path began as a teacher and, after a series of false starts in various businesses, led to my true passion, creative directing. Whether it's my experience as a teacher or as a director, I always feel an incredible responsibility to help my staff become fully actualized, to utilize their talents to attain happiness. Happy people make happy employees and happy employees are productive ones. I feel very passionate about finding the right fit for one's self and nurturing talents in a positive environment.

*How has your previous employment experience aided your position at Concepts? *
I studied theatre and I believe in the collective power of the theatre company. No one person is the star or rather the star could not shine without the efforts of the director, the stage manager, each actor, etc. (And there's always a well-prepared understudy!) Rather than feeling threatened, we should take comfort when we are surrounded by capability and draw from one another's strengths for the common goal of a "successful show."

Some of my best lessons in leadership came as a result of my own personal experiences with "bad bosses." For example, when I commended one company president for hiring female department heads, he boasted that he could pay us half of what he'd pay less talented men in the same position. In fact, in lieu of a raise, he once offered me a percent of proceeds if the project was successful. When success was achieved, he reneged on our agreement, asking me to produce a signed contract, which of course I did not have. (So much for handshakes!) He claimed it was a valuable lesson. In a way, it was. For starters, I learned to get everything in writing!

*What have the highlights and challenges been during your tenure at Concepts?*
I once turned a financial negative into a lucrative positive. During a very slow period in our company's history, I decided to approach my clients with an offer to reduce my upfront fee in return for a percentage of sales. The results were explosive and, to this day, I have "skin in the game" with a royalty structure most clients gladly welcome.

Tuning into one of my late night ads, like Smart Mop or Bedazzler, and realizing I earned money every time the ad aired was a true "ah-hah" moment and helped me to better understand my entrepreneurial clients. Not only did I gain insight, I gained a profitable financial strategy that I still practice to this day, because I chose to problem solve rather than panic. In business, there will be good times and bad times. Don't be afraid to think outside the box.

*What advice can you offer women who are looking for a career in advertising?*
Is it a man's world?! When I look back on my career, I can attest that I've learned as much from failures as I have from successes. It's important to take risks, to be fearless. If we, as women, want to be successful, we need to support one another in our goals and aspirations. Therefore, it is imperative for female leaders to share their collective knowledge and experiences, so we can all continue to grow and triumph in a "man's world".

*How do you maintain a work/life balance?*
Now that my children are adults and my parents have passed away, maintaining a balance between work and home has become much easier. But I remember the childrearing years as a frantic juggling act, too many balls in the air and the gnawing feeling that I was bound to drop one of them. Late night phone calls and location shoots take their toll on family life. I worked from home for many years and still shoot commercials in my home. My children didn't always appreciate having actors and a camera crew of "strangers" in the house. In fact, once while shooting a commercial for Contour Pillow, my then 7-year-old daughter reported to her father that there was a "man in your bed wearing your pajamas, Daddy". Daddy responded, "I'm used to that with your mother." Having a spouse who appreciates a professional career-oriented woman is imperative. And if he has a sense of humor, even better!

*What do you think is the biggest issue for women in the workplace?*
No matter how supportive a husband may be, I can certainly empathize with the many women who acknowledge that when a woman has a husband and children, she ends up as her last priority. Missed workouts, missed hair and nail appointments and a scarcity of down time to hang with girlfriends or read a book. It seems like being a good mother, a good wife and a good daughter all trump personal time. But if my years have taught me anything, it's to take time for yourself. When you take care of you, you are a better mother, a better wife and a better daughter. Ask for help when needed. It's not a sign of weakness, but of strength. It's also delegation, which is an important managerial skill.

In my observation, the biggest issue in the workplace is that we aren't trained to lead and take the necessary risks that enable us to rise to the top. Watch how women play cards. (My friend Ellen Leikind of Poker Divas pointed this out.) We don't gamble even when we have all the cards. We don't play like men, who boldly venture regardless of preparedness. We play it safe. No risk, no reward.

When it comes to dealing with male colleagues, we still focus on playing "nicely" with the boys, taking a supportive, helpful backseat role. Don't offend or rock the boat. Sadly, we are often competitive "Mean Girls" when we interact with female colleagues.

With more women participating in sports and a generation of men raised by businesswomen, I see this business landscape changing, but we still have a long way to go to reach the top and I think mentorship could help pave the way to the summit.

*How has mentorship made a difference in your professional and personal life? *
I was never mentored by a business leader. Most female executives in the past were "dragon ladies". The path to the top was not conducive to the responsibilities and obligations of a single mom. I was always willing to work long hours - just not the same hours required by most corporations. The typical compartmentalized corporate structure suffocated my creativity and the commute to NYC from the suburbs was the deathblow. Being an entrepreneur enabled me to concentrate on my creativity and enabled me to work with creatives of my choosing. I created my own path which I'm incredibly proud of. But it would've been nice to have someone guide me along the way or at least cheer me on.

*What do you want Concepts to accomplish in the next year?*
I have been blessed with a career that has taken me around the world. I have witnessed products that make life easier for everyone and generate income for hundreds, even thousands of people along the supply chain. I have seen our creative efforts realized internationally - turning on a TV in Bangkok and seeing a commercial we made in NJ. I still get a kick out of the "As Seen on TV" shelves in the stores and turning my little commercial creations into household names and advertising legends.

I've directed some of the greatest characters in ad history like Jack LaLanne, Billy Mays, Donald Trump and athletes like Joe Namath, Wayne Gretsky, John McEnroe, etc. My company has won countless awards. I have even experienced the incredible rush of seeing someone else's dreams come true. In fact, it's that thrill of watching inventors realize their American Dream that continues to motivate me. What happens when all your dreams come true? Make new ones!

This next year will be a banner year for Concepts as more mainstream companies embrace "brandmercials" and sell directly to the consumer. We are elevating our commercials to compete with mainstream ad agencies and succeeding in selling directly to the consumer in greater numbers, using more multichannel strategies. It is my goal and my mission to elevate the perception of the Direct Response industry. And I will do so by taking risks and, as always, learning from successes and failures. Apollo Minerals discovers IOCG alteration at Titan in the Gawler Craton

Apollo Minerals’ (ASX:AON) recently completed drilling program has confirmed IOCG alteration at the NoBrainer prospect within the Titan IOCG Project in South Australia’s Gawler Craton.

Visually identified sulphide rich zones at hole 14NB001 returned copper grades of up to 2,400ppm from handheld XRF instrument readings.

Assays have also confirmed elevated copper and gold over a number of three metre sample intervals down the hole.

The alteration and enrichment observed in this hole is similar to alteration described in IOCG drilling from the Mt Woods and Olympic domains

At the Bundi prospect, the follow-up downhole electromagnetic survey at hole 14BUN003 confirmed a strong conductor potentially representing a significant massive sulphide body.

The company is now reviewing a number of other targets across its tenements to generate a work program for further work in 2015.

In November, Apollo discovered significant iron oxide-Titanium-phosphate systems in two prospects at the Titan project.

This deposit type occurs in a number of the world’s iron oxide-copper-gold terrains and can be related to the same IOCG mineralising event.

NoBrainer IOCG alteration*

Drilling at the NoBrainer prospect focused on testing the top of coincident gravity and magnetic anomalies situated to the immediate southwest of the mafic Wirrida Intrusive Complex.

This intersected Archean and Mesoproterozoic geological units including hydrothermally altered mafics, granitic gneisses and granitoids.

Alteration consists of carbonate veining, iron oxides as magnetite, disseminated sulphide and small sulphide veinlets comprised principally of pyrite and pyrrhotite.

Petrographic analysis confirmed minor copper sulphides in the form of chalcopyrite.

Geochemical halos associated with IOCG style alteration, with anomalous intervals of low tenor copper and gold assays, were intersected.

Laboratory assay results confirm anomalous iron, copper and gold to 14.3% iron, 118ppm copper and 0.2g/t gold over a 3 metre interval from 67 metres.

Other zones are similarly anomalous.

Spot testing using portable XRF analysis of smaller, more sulphide rich zones down the hole returned grades of up to 2400ppm copper.

Gold is the most significant indicator for possible IOCG alteration with anomalous intervals including 12 metre at 95ppb gold from 64 metres and 28 metres at 48ppb gold from 126 metres downhole depth. These correlate with anomalous iron.

Alteration and enrichment observed in drill hole 14NB001 is similar to alteration described in IOCG drilling from the Mt Woods and Olympic domains.

These characteristics support the encouraging visual results observed and the prospectivity of the Titan project area to host significant IOCG mineralisation.

Further test work including age dating of intrusive units from drill core is underway to establish the exact timing of the geological and mineralising events.

Bundi Prospect*

At the Bundi Prospect, downhole EM confirmed the near miss of a conductor immediately northeast of the existing drill hole.

Conductors of this strength are typically observed in massive sulphide bodies and Apollo believes that this conductor represents a priority massive sulphide drilling target.

This target remains to be drill tested and will be reviewed as part of the 2015 exploration program.*Analysis*

Apollo Minerals’ discovery of IOCG alteration at the NoBrainer prospect further supports the potential of the Titan project area to host significant IOCG mineralisation.

It also follows on the discovery of iron oxide-Titanium-phosphate systems in two prospects in November as well as high grade gold intersected at Mars Aurora Tank including 4 metres at 5g/t from 16 metres.

The company is certainly in the right spot to search for the next major IOCG deposit.

It holds one of the largest tenement holdings at over 1,500 square kilometres within the Gawler Craton, which hosts four of the world’s largest IOCG deposits.

A number of parties are understood to have approached the company.

Looking ahead, Apollo is now reviewing the complete data set from its drilling program.

This includes work with High Power Exploration to identify targets to drill in the new year.

At the end of the September quarter 2014 Apollo had a cash balance of $1,595,000.

This balance will increase after the news earlier in the week that Apollo will sell its non-core Mt Oscar Iron Project in the Pilbara, with funds directed to the Titan IOCG project.

The Gun Lobby and the Cross Lobby, Two Years Later

"The gun lobby is no match for the cross lobby."

On Friday, December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 students and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. He had already killed his mother. He subsequently killed himself.

The Sandy Hook shootings came after a seemingly endless spate of mass shootings in America--school shootings at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech, the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords at a voter forum in Arizona, a theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado, a Sikh temple shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. They also occurred in a year when urban gun violence in Chicago had reached startling proportions. Enough, we said, is enough.

On the following Sunday, many American clergy stepped into their pulpits and called for a national movement to combat gun violence in our country. At Washington National Cathedral I made a similar plea, noting the challenges but also the faith resources at our disposal. Referring obliquely to the crucifixion at the heart of Christian response to suffering, I observed, "The gun lobby is no match for the cross lobby."

As December 14, 2014 approaches, many might question the power of the cross lobby in confronting the gun lobby. In the weeks immediately after the Newtown shootings, many faith leaders and gun violence prevention activists came together around a four-fold consensual legislative agenda: a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, stiffer penalties for those convicted of gun trafficking, background checks for all gun purchases, greater attention to problems of community mental health. After an initial flurry of activity, resistance from the National Rifle Association and other pro-gun interest groups rose up to stop the consensual gun violence agenda in its tracks. Six months after Newtown, the prospects for federal legislation were essentially over.

In the past two years, there have been 95 additional school shootings. Another 60,000 Americans have died by gun violence. Despite federal inaction, the vast majority of Americans continue to favor gun violence prevention legislation similar to the agenda the cross lobby put forward two years ago.

What happened? Should we turn my earlier statement around? Is the cross lobby no match for the gun lobby?

Clearly, the lack of federal action frustrates all of us who feel that gun violence is an important theological and public health issue. Congregations around the nation have tirelessly worked, prayed, and organized, and they have at times found themselves overmatched by the gun lobby. Even before the 2014 midterm elections, the composition of Congress appeared massively misaligned with national preferences regarding gun legislation. Any impartial observer, therefore, would conclude that (at least on the federal level) the cross lobby had been outplayed. Score one for the gun lobby.

In our statehouses, however, the situation is vastly different. Across the country legislatures and governors are taking action. Several states have adopted laws removing access to firearms from domestic abusers. In September, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a Gun Violence Restraining Order bill into law. Last month, Washington voters approved a referendum requiring universal background checks on all gun sales. And just this week, a bipartisan group called American State Legislators for Gun Violence Prevention--comprised of more than 200 state legislators from all 50 states and Puerto Rico--announced both its formation and the adoption of a bold agenda for taking up in state legislatures the commonsense gun violence prevention work currently stalled on Capitol Hill.

Score several for the cross lobby.

It is painfully ironic that, in a week when hundreds of congregations around the nation are recommitting themselves to faithful action to prevent gun violence, thousands of Americans are in our streets protesting the shooting deaths of young African Americans by white citizens and officers: Michael Brown of Missouri; Tamir Rice of Ohio; Ezell Ford of California; Renisha McBride of Michigan; Trayvon Martin of Florida. We grieve over all gun deaths, whether in schools, in malls, or on the streets. As the cross lobby regroups and reorganizes to reduce the level of gun violence in America, we must broaden our work to address the historic prevalence of racial injustice in our common life. Black lives do matter.

"The gun lobby is no match for the cross lobby." There is so much progress. There is so much left to do. We owe it to the children of Newtown, the people of Aurora, the children of Chicago, to build on the successes of the recent weeks and months. We owe it to Michael, Tamir, Ezell, Renisha, and Trayvon to stand with all victims of gun violence, even gun violence done in the name of the law.

"The gun lobby is no match for the cross lobby." In the end, we will prevail in this struggle because love and justice always finally win over fear and hate. Let us commit ourselves, today, to stand where God calls us to stand: with and for those who suffer and die from the illegal and immoral use of firearms. There is no issue more important in our common life. There is no cause more precious to the heart of God. Reported by Huffington Post 12 hours ago.
