Magna International (TSE:MG) (NYSE:MGA), a Canadian auto parts maker and contract vehicle manufacturer, reported a 47 percent stronger-than-expected profit in the third quarter, boosted by high demand in North America. Shares gain.

Net income rose to $470 million, or $2.19 per share, in the July-to-September quarter, from $319 million, or $1.39 per share, a year earlier, the Aurora, Ontario-based company said in a statement today.

Excluding unusual items, earnings were $2.22 per share, above the $.97 average estimate of 16 analysts.

Third-quarter sales increased 6 percent to $8.820 billion from $8.338 billion year-over-year. Bay Street had expected revenue of $8.75 billion.

Magna has 312 manufacturing operations around the world, and more than 130,000 employees. The company, which counts car makers such as General Motors, Volkswagen AG , BMW and Ford Motor among its customers, has been pushing to improve efficiency in its European operations.

Complete vehicle assembly sales rose 9 percent to $740 million, while complete vehicle assembly volumes were down 5 percent to about 32,000 units.

North American and Asian production sales, complete vehicle assembly sales and tooling, engineering and other sales grew, while its European and Rest of World production sales decreased from last year, the company said.

In North America, from where the company gets about half of its total sales, Magna's vehicle production increased 8 percent and production sales rose 10 percent to $4.43 billion in the third quarter.

Moving forward, the company boosted its forecasts slightly for full-year 2014 light vehicle production to 17.0 million units in North America, from 16.9 million forecast previously, and to 20.2 million units in Europe, from 19.8 million.

It now expects total sales in the range of $35.8-$37.0 billion for the year. The forecast issued in August was for total sales to be in the range of $35.6 billion-$37.3 billion.  Analysts are projecting sales of $36.46 billion.

Total production sales are currently estimated to be $29.8 billion to $30.7 billion, compared to the earlier guidance of $29.8 billion to $31.1 billion.

Also today, the company declared a quarterly dividend of $0.38, payable on December 12 to shareholders of record on November 28.

Magna’s U.S.-listed shares were up 5.7 percent at $102.52 at 9:39 a.m. in New York, stretching this year’s rally to 25 percent.

Animal Advocates Vow To Keep Fighting After Aurora Votes To Maintain Pit Bull Ban

Voters in Aurora, Colorado, on Tuesday elected to keep their city's 9-year-old ban on pit bulls.

The final tally showed 54,809 residents voted to support the ban, while 27,050 voted to scrap it.

Nancy Tranzow, founder of the advocacy group ColoRADogs, told The Huffington Post that though she's disappointed in Tuesday's result, the group is "not even close to done" fighting the ban.

"We'll go back to the drawing table, and with more time to inform the discussion, we will revisit it when we can work to both gather signatures and educate people about why breed-neutral legislation is what protects public safety," she said. "I worked way too many years in [the fight for] LGBT rights to not have a few tricks up my sleeve."

Tuesday's vote was "unfortunate for Aurora’s families and the dogs they love," said Cory Smith, director of pet protection and policy for the Humane Society, in a statement.

But animal advocates say that despite Tuesday's vote, they are heartened that more communities are coming to reject "breed specific legislation," or laws and regulations that restrict or prohibit ownership of dogs by breed.

Groups like the American Bar Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association -- and even President Obama -- have come out against such laws on the grounds they are expensive to enforce and lead to a surfeit of homeless pets, while forcing families to choose between their homes and their pets, without any increase in public safety.

"These bans are inhumane, ineffective and based on myth and misinformation," Smith said. "Aurora’s breed ban is one of very few left on the books because communities are waking up to the reality that managing dogs effectively has nothing to do with breed."Post by ColoRADogs.

William Dong Federally Convicted For Carrying Rifle Similar To Sandy Hook Shooter's

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man who prompted a lockdown at the University of New Haven when he brought guns to campus has pleaded guilty to a federal weapons charge.

William Dong, a former UNH student, pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court to transporting a Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle into a state where that gun is banned. Connecticut outlawed the weapon after a similar gun was used in December 2012 to kill 26 people inside the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. Dong was arrested Dec. 3, 2013, after a bystander alerted police and authorities found handguns and the Bushmaster in his car. At his home, they later found 2,700 rounds of ammunition and newspaper clippings about the Aurora, Colorado, theater shooting.

Dong already faces prison time after being convicted of state charges. Reported by Huffington Post 22 hours ago.

Gun Control Ballot Organizers Hope to Bring More Laws to Washington State Legislature

Gun Control Ballot Organizers Hope to Bring More Laws to Washington State Legislature On November 5—the day after a gun control initiative funded by one-percenters passed in Washington state—Initiative 594 (I-594) organizers made clear they want even more gun control in and may take a similar initiative-approach to gun control in other parts of the country.

According to Seattle PI, I-594 chair Sandy Brown said her group will follow up their November 4 victory with a push for broader gun control in the Washington state legislature. These measures could include "criminal penalties" that could be brought against gun owners whose guns are discovered by children.

I-594 supporters also said the end-around they did to the state legislature via the ballot initiative is a model for other states to follow. They see opportunity because "about half of America's states allow citizens—or well-financed interests—to bring initiatives and referendums to the ballot."

Breitbart News previously reported that I-594 institutes universal background checks in Washington state, thereby outlawing private gun sales and requiring the compilation of a gun ownership registry. But it overlooks the fact that background checks have never been a hindrance to criminals.

Proof of this is seen in the examples of Santa Barbara gunman Elliot Rodger, 2014 Fort Hood gunman Ivan Lopez, Maryland mall gunman Darion Marcus Aguilar, LAX gunman Paul Ciancia, DC Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis, Aurora theater gunman James Holmes, Tucson gunman Jared Loughner, and 2009 Fort Hood gunman Nidal Hasan, among others. Each of these went through background checks to acquire their firearms.

So the truth about I-594 is that it will not stop crime, but it will provide an avenue, through gun control proponents, to make it even harder for law-abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

These 8 Images Of The Cosmos Will Stop You In Your Tracks On Saturday, Nov. 8 the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania will launch an art exhibition that is out of this world.

"Starstruck: The Fine Art of Astrophotography" features 100 images by 35 artists from around the world. The photographs capture the beauty of some of the most stunning scenes from and beyond our home planet.

Each images was carefully selected by a distinguished panel of judges: Weston Naef, the curator emeritus of photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum; Dennis di Cicco, the senior editor of Sky & Telescope magazine; and Jerry T. Bonnell, the co-editor and author of NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day.

Here's a sneak peak at some of the stunning works of art in this exhibit, which was organized by the Bates College Museum of Art in Maine. It will be on display at the Michener in Doylestown from Nov. 8 through Feb. 8, 2015.

The aurora borealis in the image below, taken by Yuichi Takasaka in 2011, are a cosmic phenomenon produced when energetic particles in space interact with gas particles in Earth's atmosphere that emit light as a result. Star trails, which cameras capture using long exposure times, are also visible.

In this image, US-based Warren Keller turned his sights toward the constellation Orion. Both the Horsehead and Flame nebulae, pictured here, are located about 1,500 light years from Earth.

Northern Canada and Greenland take center stage in this captivating image created by Michael Benson.

In the image below, captured by Babak Tafreshi of Iran, the band of the Milky Way Galaxy is visible in the clear night sky, with a towering mountaintop in the foreground.

The nebula pictured below, called Thor's Helmet, is located 15,000 light years from Earth, in the constellation Canis Major. Steven Mazlin and Jack Harvey produced this work.

In 2010, Jean-Paul Roux of France took this breathtaking nighttime shot of a blue moon during a lunar eclipse. Blue moon is commonly referred to as the second full moon in a single, solar calendar month and only happens once every two to three years.

Otter Cliff is located in Acadia National Park in Maine and offers a wonderful spot for photographers. In this image, taken by Jim Nickelson in 2011, Otter Cliff is pictured against a beautiful display of star trails.

Two Colorado police officers went beyond the call-of-duty to help an 86-year-old great-grandmother after her purse was stolen.

Julia Brecht was shopping at the Aurora Super Target when her purse was snatched from her cart, reports The Daily Mail.

Aurora officers Craig Hess and Robert Little helped Brecht get home safely after the theft, and did even more out of pure kindness.

Brecht told the officers she was in a hurry to get home as she takes care of her husband, who is blind and in a wheelchair.

"They grabbed my shopping list," Brecht said. "They bought the groceries. One brought me home. They went back to Target and brought my car home."

The officers not only finished Brecht’s grocery shopping and got her car home safely, they also canceled her credit cards, and changed the locks on her home since the thief stole her house keys, reports ABC News.

The officers used their own money to purchase the new locks for Brecht’s home.

"They went far beyond what any person like me would expect," Brecht said. “They were just absolutely incredible … We're just very thankful."

The officers also found praise on the Aurora police department’s Facebook page.

"That's why APD is one of the premier police departments in the country because of officers like this," one person wrote.
