Immigrants Urge Colorado Latinos To Vote: 'My Family Depends On How Well We Do'

AURORA, Colorado -- Leo Murrieta, a 28-year-old national field director for the Latino advocacy group Mi Familia Vota, gathered with a dozen or so canvassers around a conference table on Monday to get them ready to go out into the Denver suburb and talk to people about voting.

There were no chairs at the table -- Mi Familia Vota had borrowed them from partner groups that had asked for them back. So the canvassers stood to listen to Murrieta run through reminders for what they needed to do. It was raining outside and chilly, but he joked that a little rain wouldn't kill them. He reminded them to be friendly to the potential voters and imagine they were uncles or aunts -- "talk to them like they're your tíos, your tías," he said -- and to make sure to mark off everyone they spoke to. If no one was at the door, they'd go back.

It was eight days out from the election in Colorado, a key swing state with a Latino population that's being heavily courted by both parties, putting groups like Mi Familia Vota into their final sprint to get the community involved. Latinos in Colorado could have a major influence on the fate of the Senate -- if Republican candidate Cory Gardner beats Democratic Sen. Mark Udall, the upper chamber could end up led by the GOP.

The results also could have a major influence on the fate of immigration reform, an issue that doesn't always top Latino voters' list of priorities but does tend to be highly personal. It certainly is for Murrieta, as he told the canvassers around the conference table. He legally immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico when he was just a week old, and became a citizen in 2010. But his brother-in-law and sister-in-law are both undocumented, and could be deported.

As he told the canvassers about his family members, he began to choke up.

"I get emotional because this is really important," he said. "My family depends on how well we do."

Being a canvasser can be a difficult job. Those with Mi Familia Vota spend hours outside alone walking door to door, in the hope they will convince people to mail in their ballots, drop them off, or go to a polling place, although they do not advocate for specific candidates. Usually, people they encounter are friendly, but some are rude or impatient. Often, they don't open the door at all. Canvassing is a job, but Murrieta encouraged them to remember the other reasons they did it. For some, maybe it was because they care about the education system or jobs. For others, it was immigration reform. They needed to remember their motivations, he said.

Before they went out into the neighborhoods, they clapped and did a chant: "Sí, se puede! Sí, se puede! Sí, se puede!"

About 15 minutes later, 17-year-old Daniela Alonzo was dropped off in an Aurora neighborhood to begin canvassing for the day. She's a senior in high school and a legal permanent resident who moved to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 13 years old. She said the job isn't so hard -- other than when she needs to go to the bathroom while she's out canvassing -- and that most people are friendly. She tracks her steps using her phone, and usually makes it to about 15,000 per day.

At the first house, Alonzo took out a small rock and knocked it on the door -- "It starts to hurt your hand when you knock enough of them," she said -- and no one answered. But the owner, 47-year-old Sergio Sanchez, was outside in the driveway working on his car. He was listening to a Spanish-language radio station, so she spoke to him in Spanish at first, and he agreed to sign a card to get more info from Mi Familia Vota about the election.

Sanchez told Alonzo he planned to vote, but after she walked on to the next house, he said he wasn't positive yet. The Denver native said he votes every election, but it's harder this year. Immigration is an important issue for him, and after seeing some of his friends and family get deported, he said, he is unhappy with President Barack Obama.

"Obama, he promised a lot of things, immigration and all of that, and he never did it," Sanchez said. "So it's just one of those things."

Latino voter support for Democrats is significant but has dropped, and some in the community have expressed frustration with Obama's high removal numbers and a decision to delay executive action that could shield some undocumented immigrants from deportation. Latino outreach groups and advocates want to make sure that frustration doesn't lead to voters staying home, because the election remains important for immigration reform.

Abel Perez, a 26-year-old who does canvassing work in Longmont, Colorado, for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, said he hears from voters that they are disappointed with Obama, Republicans, or both.

"Some people are upset with Obama because of his delay on administrative relief," he said. "Some people don’t even want to vote anymore because they’re upset with everybody."

The canvassing gig is Perez's first real job. He's an undocumented immigrant who came to the country from Mexico 20 years ago, and he now has authorization to remain here and work legally under Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, or DACA. His family is mixed-status -- some are legal residents, others are citizens, others are undocumented. His younger brother was deported four years ago. When he talks to potential voters, Perez tells them how important their vote is to keep families like his together.

Perez was at the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition office in Longmont getting ready for canvassing with Lizarlette Alvarez, a 19-year-old U.S.-born citizen whose mother is undocumented. She has been involved in politics since the Dream Act, a bill that would help undocumented young people who came to the country as kids, failed in the Senate. That was when she realized how many people in her community were afraid, she said. This is her first year voting, and Alvarez said she hopes to encourage others to do the same, in part to keep Gardner from winning instead of pro-reform Udall.

"If we could get more people educated in politics, we could make some real change," she said. "That's the beauty of a democracy, but so many people are not informed or not educated about the issues that are coming up. And that's when the politicians get to do whatever they want."

Getting voters informed, then, is a key part of the effort. They recently attended an informal get-together called "Ballots and Brews," hosted by 26-year-old DACA recipient Alex Pardo. Pardo can't vote, but he gathered about 30 people to watch the Broncos game and talk about the election. Some people brought their mail-in ballots so they could go through them measure by measure and discuss each issue.

Pardo has been in the U.S. since 1990 but has no clear path to becoming a citizen, and he said he urges his friends to vote to help people like him.

"I have lots of friends who are eligible to vote," he said. "They don't follow politics as much, but they will still vote because they think my situation is B.S. That's a small thing they can do, it's just a small portion of their time to try and help equalize the situation for me and a lot of people." Reported by Huffington Post 5 days ago.

AURORA, Colo. (PRWEB) November 03, 2014

American Sentinel University’s new e-book, ‘GIS Certificates: How They Can Work for You,’ provides expert insight on how earning a geospatial-specific certificate will make a professional’s career, experience and education more marketable when searching for employment and growth opportunities. The complimentary e-book is available for download at http://www.americansentinel.edu/blog/2014/09/18/new-e-book-gis-certificates-how-they-can-work-for-you/

“In today’s competitive job market, specialized knowledge and skills are at a premium. A GIS certificate is a proof of competence and a resume booster that could be the distinguishing characteristic that sets the applicant apart from the competition,” says Lee Mitchell, MS, certified mapping scientist GIS/LIS, adjunct faculty lead at American Sentinel University. “With little or no GIS work experience, a certificate will ensure employers of your ability. Professionals following non-GIS career paths can use the certificate to demonstrate an additional skill set, improving their chances of expanding their professional opportunities.”

GIS Plays Key Role in Today’s Hottest Fields
Geographic and geospatial information systems, or GIS, is widely used in a diverse array of applications and industries such as healthcare, law enforcement, energy and utilities, transportation, and even public sectors as government and disaster relief.

By obtaining a GIS certificate, professionals can commensurate technical skills with business knowledge of how to help organizations become efficient.

“GIS requires people who can understand geographic theory, grasp data analysis, use the tools and bring threads together to weave a coherent picture,” says Mitchell. “It’s demanding and important work and to do it, you’ll need the practical education and experiential background.”

‘GIS Certificates: How They Can Work for You’ is a must-read for professionals who want to learn about what to expect from a GIS certificate program, how a career can benefit, how to build on an existing degree and whether working toward a certificate is the right approach.

Topics include:

-What is a Certificate?

-Benefits of a Certificate

-How A Certificate Can Build on Your Career

-Who Should Get a Certificate

-Industries Using GIS

“Managers and executives in many disciplines benefit from GIS,” says Mitchell. “GIS provides a common operating picture of resources so managers are able to make data-driven decisions.”

She adds that organizations can also better understand their client base with the technology.

“Improvements in the technologies that make up GIS and in methods of applying GIS will open avenues for managers not yet envisioned. The full potential of GIS has not yet been reached in many applications, so improvements in efficiency and understanding will continue, impacting many industries and creating a need for more GIS professionals,” adds Mitchell.

Bremont Homes (http://www.BremontHomes.com), the Greater Toronto Area’s finest home building company, is excited to announce the beginning of construction on its Noblewood and Forest Edge projects.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) November 03, 2014

Bremont Homes (http://www.BremontHomes.com), the Greater Toronto Area’s finest home building company, is excited to announce the beginning of construction on its Noblewood and Forest Edge projects.

Noblewood is located in an exclusive enclave and will feature new estate homes in Brampton, while the Forest Edge Project will feature exclusive new homes in Innisfil along a private cul-de-sac near Lake Simcoe.

“After months and months of planning, Bremont Homes has finally broken ground on two of our most exciting projects,” Gary Breda, president of Bremont Homes. “The Noblewood and Forest Edge projects are in two completely different cities, but both share parallel levels of exclusivity that we bring to building custom homes.”

“Breda explains that the Noblewood construction project will feature estate homes in Brampton, while Forest Edge residents will enjoy new homes in Innisfil near Lake Simcoe. Both construction projects will showcase their own style of luxury and emphasize the location of each project, which are key to their attractiveness.

“The Noblewood project is just off Queen Street, in an enclave of Springbrook hidden from plain view, but still close enough to make it convenient for travel and other amenities,” he adds. “Twenty-eight estate homes will be built to make up Noblewood, differing from the Forest Edge project, which is outside of the GTA near Lake Simcoe and will be high luxury all the way.”

According to Breda, the estate homes in Brampton will have 40- and 50-foot lots in an English manor and French chateaux architectural style, which includes nine-foot ceilings. The new homes in Forest Edge, meanwhile, will feature large windows and decorative columns, in addition to access to Georgian Downs and the Big Cedar Golf and Country Club.

“Both projects are attractive for different reasons, but each offer the luxury that’s become associated with Bremont Homes,” Breda concludes. “An appointment to view either project can be scheduled by visiting the Bremont Homes web site.”

Recognized as one of the Greater Toronto Area’s finest home building companies, Bremont Homes is founded on a vision of quality design and workmanship, innovative style, and exceptional customer service. Over the years, Bremont Homes has developed a number of new communities and thousands of homes in Aurora, Burlington, Courtice, Georgetown, Maple, Pickering, Mississauga, Richmond Hill, and other prime locations in the Greater Toronto Area. Bremont Homes currently has a number of upscale communities with custom manors and luxury townhouses under development in Brampton and Wasaga Beach and on Lake Simcoe. 7 Facts About Aurora, Colorado's Breed Ban Before Tuesday's Vote

$
0
0
Tuesday, voters in Aurora, Colorado will have the opportunity to repeal the city's 9-year-old breed ban.

The city has discussed the potential repeal multiple times since the law's inception and finally decided to take the repeal idea to the voters. I personally think it's an uphill battle to win a repeal via a public vote, generally because if a ban is in place, most of the residents have had very little personal interaction with the banned breeds and thus, are more apt to have to rely on the media coverage as the basis for their opinions. To this point, the area media has not been terribly accurate in their reporting.

So with that, here are seven facts that voters in Aurora need to know prior to heading to the polls.

*1. All national organizations with expertise in dog behavior support repealing breed bans.*

Every. Single. One. These organizations of professionals are basing their reputations on their opposition to breed-specific laws. And these organizations are very diverse, and include the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the National Animal Control Association (NACA), American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), the American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), and the American Bar Association all agree that laws targeting breeds are ineffective and should be replaced with laws targeting aggressive dogs based on their behavior, not their breed.

You can read their position statements here.

*2. The 9-year-old breed ban has NOT been effective at improving public safety.*

In fact, the number of bites in Aurora has actually increased by 77 percent since the law was put into effect and the law seemed to reverse what was a trend of decreasing dog bites, and bites immediately began trending upward after the law passed. In fact, the four highest years in total dog bites occurred AFTER the law was enacted to supposedly improve public safety. Here are the raw numbers from 2003-2013:

Year -- Total Bites / Bites by targeted breeds / Bites by other breeds

2003 -- 213 / 28 / 185

2004 -- 211 / 33 / 178

2005 -- 137 / 27 / 110

Ordinance Passed October 24, 2005

2006 -- 137 / 8 / 129

2007 -- 172 / 15 / 157

2008 -- 224 / 8 / 216

2009 -- 229 / 9 / 220

2010 -- 194 / 6 / 188

2011 -- 252 / 9 / 243

2012 -- 241 / 6 / 235

2013 -- 243 / 10 / 233It's also worth noting that the breed ban was set at addressing only about 15 percent of the dog bites in Aurora -- and never even attempted to address 85 percent of the cases.

#3) *In spite of the total bite data being easily available via Freedom of Information Act, not one single media outlet in the Denver/Aurora area has decided to publish it.*

#4) *What the ordinance has done is lead to the mass slaughter of more than 1,100 dogs that look like pit bulls -- at taxpayer expense.*

According to a memo produced by Aurora Animal Care PR Specialist Cheryl Conway, dated January 27th, 636 pit bulls were killed in 2006 -- the first year after the ban was passed. 173 were killed in 2007 and roughly 100 every year since then.

The ordinance has led to the direct killing of more than 1,000 family pets since it was enacted. An article from the Aurora Sentinel put the death tally at 1,158 nearly a year ago. While the rest of the nation is working hard to save healthy, treatable dogs, the city of Aurora is using taxpayer money to round them up and kill them.

#5) *Aurora City Council members that support the law have acknowledged that the law isn't about improved public safety and is not rooted in factual information*.

Last week, Aurora City Council Woman Molly Markert told ABC 7 in Denver:

"Oh, you bet if I could, I would ban the owners too. By banning the dogs, we lose the violent behavior that comes with the owners." She then went on to say that breed bans make people feel safer. "It's not about a fact, it's about a feeling."

In saying this, she acknowledges that she is racist, or at the very least classist, vs the stereotypes of people she THINKS own pit bulls. Never mind that pit bulls are among the most popular breeds of dogs in the country, and owned by people of all races, income levels, and professions including lawyers, academics, and young professionals.

Markert's reactions should be extremely frightening to anyone who believes in fact-based decision-making and policies not designed to target people by perceived race or class.

#6)* The expense of managing the ordinance has been substantial, including substantial legal fees that are being paid with taxpayer funds.*

An email from Assistant City Attorney Julie Heckman from February 2014 notes that the city has suffered many legal challenges, to which they have suffered substantial losses.

In the ADA case, Grider, Belcher and Piltz vs the City of Denver & Aurora, the city of Aurora endured more than $130,000 in legal fees associated with defending the law (in a case which they eventually lost).

They also have been challenged in their breed identification of more than 100 dogs -- and ended up being wrong on the the breed ID in 77 percent of the cases. Again, all at taxpayer expense.

#7) *City officials have already acknowledged that the original breed ban was a failure.*

The original law banned 10 different breeds of dogs back in 2006. However, in April 2011, the council voted to remove 7 breeds from the banned breeds list due to their struggles in enforcing the law.

The law is a failure. It's failed in public safety. It's cost innocent pets their lives. It's cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. And the council members who support the law acknowledge it's not rooted in fact, and only makes people feel better. And the law has no professional support.

Voters in Aurora, I urge you to vote to repeal the city's breed ban on Tuesday. The rest of the nation is watching. Reported by Huffington Post 3 days ago.

The power of passivation! Ensitech is bringing its TIG Brush Stainless Steel Weld Cleaning System to Fabtech 2014, showing North American companies a safer, higher-quality alternative to clean and passivated stainless steel welds.

The Ensitech Surface Finishing System provides welders a choice of four innovative cleaning fluids, plus dedicated fluids ranging from pre-weld preparation to finishing and marking, leaving fabricators covered at every step of the welding process.

Utilized by an increasing number of industry-leading companies worldwide including Nestle, Bechtel, Thales Group, Laing ORourke and Monadelphous, the TIG Brush has been rapidly adopted as the preferred weld-cleaning technology of quality and safety-conscious companies in the Food & Beverage, Oil & Gas, Defense, Chemical Processing, Mining, Water Treatment, Energy and Construction industries across the globe.

Booth visitors will have the opportunity to win a free TIG Brush by entering into a raffle, the winner of which will be determined on the final day of the show. Why The Colorado Election Means Everything For One Death Row Inmate

The winner of the hotly contested Colorado gubernatorial election couldn't mean more to one man: Nathan Dunlap, a convicted murderer who has been on death row in the state for almost 20 years.

In 1996, Dunlap was sentenced to death for the murder of four former coworkers at a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant in Aurora, Colorado, three years prior. Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper, who came into office in 2010 as a pro-death penalty candidate, stayed Dunlap's execution in 2013. The reprieve was temporary, however, leaving the issue open for a potential successor to order Dunlap's death at a later date.

That's exactly what Republican challenger Bob Beauprez has said he intends to do.

"When I'm governor, Nathan Dunlap will be executed," Beauprez said during a May GOP primary debate.

During a recent interview with CNN over the Dunlap case, Hickenlooper suggested that he could grant the convicted killer full clemency before he leaves office.

“If that becomes a political issue, in that context within a campaign, obviously there’s a period of time between the election and, and the end of the year where individuals can make decisions... I could give it a full clemency between election day, I could…there are a number of different opportunities to make sure that doesn’t happen. Again, keeping in mind it should not be a political football," he said, according to audio obtained by conservative blog Complete Colorado.

Associated Press reporter Kristen Wyatt wondered what Dunlap may be feeling about the race on Twitter Tuesday:

"There's one person in Colorado that is more interested in the governor being re-elected than even the governor, and that's Nathan Dunlap," said George Brauchler, 18th Judicial District Attorney, The Denver Post reported. Reported by Huffington Post 2 days ago.
