The AIER College Destinations Index Ranks the Top 75 Metro Areas Based on a Statistical Analysis of 271 Metropolitan Statistical Areas with Student Populations of at Least 10,000

Great Barrington, MA (PRWEB) October 07, 2014

The American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) has released the 2014 edition of its College Destinations Index, which ranks the top 75 metro areas in the United States for college students. The index compares each location’s overall economic and academic environment, quality of life and employment opportunities. The rankings and a description of the methodology can be found at http://www.aier.org/cdi.

“When it comes to a student’s educational experience, the location of a college or university can be just as important as the educational institution itself,” said Stephen Adams, President of AIER. “The College Destination Index gives students and parents another layer of useful information when making the decision about where to go to college.”

The top 75 college destinations – grouped by population size – are listed below and charted on a map at http://www.aier.org/cdi. The interactive map shows each location’s statistical scores in each of the four categories used to rank locations. The college destinations are organized around size of the metropolitan statistical area, or MSAs, and are broken down into the following categories: Major Metros, Mid-Size Metros, Small Metros, and College Towns. The top-rated college destinations in each category, respectively, were: Boston, MA, San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA, Boulder, CO and Ithaca, NY.

The AIER CDI ranks destinations based on statistical economic analysis of each MSA across the following categories:

Student Life:·     Student Concentration: number of college students per 1,000 residents
·     Cost of Housing: fair market rent of a two-bedroom apartment
·     City Accessibility: percentage that walk, bike or take public transportation

Culture:·     Arts and Leisure: concentration of arts, entertainment, and recreation establishments
·     International Students: percentage of students that are foreign
·     Innovation Producers: percentage of workforce in the innovation fields

Economic Health:·     Unemployment Rate: percentage of labor force without jobs
·     Entrepreneurial Activity: net change in number of businesses (3-year average)
·     Brain Drain or Gain: change in proportion of population with college degrees

Opportunity:·     R&D Per Student: academic R&D per student
·     College Educated: percentage of the population with a college degree
·     Earning Potential: median earnings

“These cities offer opportunity and a high quality of life not just for students, but for residents as well,” said Luke Delorme, a Research Fellow at AIER responsible for the study. “People considering a new place to live or open a business would do well to consider these locations.”

This year’s list incorporated methodology changes that improve year-to-year changes in the list.

Complimentary electronic copies of the complete AIER College Destinations Index analysis and companion brochure are available from AIER’s website, http://www.aier.org/cdi. Print brochures are available at no cost by emailing info(at)aier(dot)org.

Colorado Held Hostage: Hickenlooper Says He 'Could' Grant Clemency To Mass Shooter If Not Re-Elected

Colorado Held Hostage: Hickenlooper Says He 'Could' Grant Clemency To Mass Shooter If Not Re-Elected If Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper (D) is not re-elected in November, he says he "could" respond to the loss by commuting the death sentence of mass shooter Nathan Dunlap.

Dunlap is the infamous killer who shot 5 and killed 4 at an Aurora Chuck E. Cheese in 1993. He was angered over being fired, and Denver Magazine 5280 reports that Dunlap was at his girlfriend's apartment having sex with her when the police tracked him down "only...a few hours" after the shootings.

Dunlap was sentenced to death but when the date for his execution came up in 2013, Hickenlooper granted a "temporary reprieve." The National Journal reported that he chose this action as a way to pass the buck on taking a firm stand on the death penalty. Families of the victims gunned down by Dunlap were heartbroken and outraged.

The Journal also pointed out that Hickenlooper has since indicated he could further his action -- changing it to full clemency -- should Coloradans elect Republican Bob Beauprez instead of him in November.

In August, Complete Colorado published audio of Hickenlooper telling a CNN interviewer that if his gubernatorial opponent ran and won on a platform of enforcing the death penalty there are still things "a governor can [do]" with the time that remains. Things he can do in the "period of time between the election...and the end of the year."

When pressed to explain this statement, Hickenlooper said that if his Republican opponent wins in November, "there obviously remedies that the governor can do, you know, I could give it full clemency between election day and the end of the year."

He said would have "a number of different opportunities" to be sure Dunlap wasn't executed.

Dunlap shot five victims in 1993 after being fired from his job at Chuck E. Cheese, killing four. All of his victims were white, while Dunlap is black.

Gov. Hickenlooper felt no qualms about punishing law-abiding Coloradans with gun control over the attacks on the Aurora movie theater and Sandy Hook Elementary, although law-abiding Coloradans played no part in either attack. But when face-to-face with carrying out the sentence against a criminal convicted of a mass shooting in 1993, Hickenlooper balked and suggested he will go so far as to grant full clemency to the shooter if the people of Colorado vote for someone else in November.

GT Advanced Bankruptcy Unlikely to Affect Apple Watch, But Sapphire for Future iPhones in Doubt

0

A new report from KGI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple's sapphire partner GT Advanced Technologies' recent filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection will not affect its upcoming Apple Watch. However, he cautions that it does raise concerns about the possibility of future iPhones using sapphire displays.
Bankruptcy has no impact on Apple Watch. As the Apple Watch sapphire cover lens uses an ingot of less than 6-inches, and as drop-test requirements aren’t so stringent as those of iPhone, general ingot manufacturing processes such as KY suffice for Apple Watch. This is why there are abundant sapphire ingot suppliers to choose from for Apple Watch. According to our survey, aside from GTAT, other Apple Watch sapphire ingot suppliers are Hansol (KR) and Harbin Aurora Optoelectronics (CN). We therefore don’t think GTAT’s bankruptcy will affect sapphire ingot supply to Apple Watch.

... but it raises uncertainties on iPhone touch panel use of sapphire cover lens.

Kuo suggests that GT Advanced's ASF sapphire ingot isn't the only one it's considering to use for iPhone displays, though it is the company's preference due to the superior drop-test performance of GT Advanced's sapphire. And while Kuo believes that Apple still wants to use sapphire displays for iPhones, the bankruptcy of GT Advanced will likely result in bottlenecks in ASF sapphire production. Other sapphire ingot suppliers are unlikely to benefit, as they do not measure up to Apple's higher drop-test standards.

Apple had been widely expected to include sapphire display covers on some iPhone 6 models, but that development did not arrive. As Kuo notes, Apple still plans to use sapphire displays for Apple Watch, as it uses an ingot less than 6-inches and Apple's standards for drop-tests on the Watch are not as stringent as those for iPhone.*Recent Mac and iOS Blog Stories*

Gabby Giffords And Mark Kelly: 'Newtown Moved Us From Words To Action'

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords and her husband were finally starting to settle into normal routine in their Tucson home by the middle of 2012, making strides in her rehabilitation, decorating their house and watching hour after hour of the TV show "Glee."

Then came the movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colorado, that left 12 dead and many more injured. Months later, 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. "Newtown moved us from words to action," Giffords and husband Mark Kelly write in their book "Enough: Our Fight to Keep America Safe from Gun Violence."

The book chronicles the couple's lives from survivors to advocates, detailing the trepidation Kelly had about plunging himself into the politics of gun control. It delves into the history of the National Rifle Association while telling of Giffords' recovery efforts and the couple's political action committee, Americans for Responsible Solutions.

The book and an Associated Press interview with Kelly this week provide a behind-the-scenes look at the couple as they moved past the shooting and took a greater role on the national stage:

GIFFORDS' RECOVERY

Giffords and Kelly describe ways in which their gun-control advocacy has helped the former congresswoman move forward and regain her speech skills after she was wounded in the January 2011 shooting outside a Tucson supermarket that killed six people.

They detail the difficulty Giffords had in articulating the lines in a speech at a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee in January 2013. But the complexity of the issue "motivated her to work even harder," they wrote.

The former lawmaker is even back to shooting, picking up a gun for the first time at a Nevada range in the summer of 2013.

Giffords had to use her left hand to fire because her right hand is paralyzed. She's not left-handed, so Kelly worried.

But was Giffords nervous?

"No, she wasn't. At all," Kelly said.

ON JARED LOUGHNER

As Jared Loughner was sentenced in November 2012 after being convicted of carrying out the shooting, Kelly and Giffords told him that was the last time they'd ever think of him.

"There's what you say in a statement and what actually happens and, as you know, those are two different things," Kelly said.

Kelly says the couple had every intention of erasing Loughner, who received seven life sentences, from their minds.

The Aurora and Newtown shootings halted that plan.

ON THE POLITICAL FIGHT FOR STRICTER GUN LAW

Even after Giffords nearly died when she was shot in the head, she and Kelly say they kept their firearms and remained staunch supporters of the Second Amendment.

While Giffords was a seasoned politician, Kelly had concerns about taking on politics.

"There was risk involved that we wouldn't be able to meet that ambitious goal, and then what does that say? That says we're not effective in what we want to do," Kelly said in the interview. "You have people who start to think about you differently. But Gabby's a politician, and I'm not that sensitive about things."

FRIENDSHIPS ARE TESTED

A long-lasting friendship between Giffords and Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake was tested when he voted against a background-check bill that the couple rallied for.

"I had such complicated feelings about our old friend that morning," Kelly wrote.

Kelly believes Flake was under huge pressure from the NRA to vote against the bill.

Flake, meanwhile, said in a statement to The Associated Press: "I have a great deal of respect and affection for Gabby and Mark. They have been very effective in advocating for a cause that they deeply believe in."

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

The couple now lives in Tucson, where Giffords works on her speech and physical therapy. They like to go to Giffords' mother's rural home to shoot guns, Kelly says.

But they don't have much free time, travelling and speaking in support of legislative candidates.

"We're gonna be really effective here in November," Kelly said. "We're gonna move ahead, and we're not going anywhere. What this country really needs is a balanced debate on this issue. And it's been really out of balance, so our job is to try to fix that." Reported by Huffington Post 11 hours ago.
