Does the Second Amendment Only Apply to White People?

$

After learning that Los Angeles police shot and killed Ezell Ford Monday night, I spent a good deal of time Tuesday night and Wednesday morning trying to find out if the victim was unarmed.Ford was a 25-year-old black man (pictured above) who had reportedly suffered from mental illness. The official police statement online never mentioned if Ford had a weapon when he was killed. Although several media organizations reported he was unarmed, I could find no evidence from LAPD or the family to corroborate that claim.I wanted to determine if Ford should be added to the tragic list of unarmed African Americans who had been killed recently from Michael Brown to Renisha McBride, from Trayvon Martin to Jordan Davis, and from Oscar Grant to Eric Garner. Some were killed by police. Some were killed by private citizens. All were unarmed. Then it hit me. Suddenly I realized it didn't matter if he had a gun. In the eyes of America, he had something more dangerous than a gun: his black skin. Yes, Ezell Ford was suspicious, in part, because he was black. That's why unarmed black people continue to be killed.

Look online and you'll find pictures of white people proudly carrying guns into churches, bars, and grocery stores thanks to the "open carry" laws passed in nearly every state recently. Black people don't have that right. When a white teenager named Steve Lohner was stopped by the police last month and refused to show his ID after carrying a loaded shotgun on the streets of Aurora, Colorado (the same city where a mass murderer killed 12 people and injured 70 others in a packed movie theater in July 2012), the teen walked away with nothing but a citation. But when a 22-year-old black kid named John Crawford picked up a mere BB gun in a Walmart store in Dayton, Ohio last week, customers called the police, who then shot and killed him. Here lies a racial disparity that's difficult for honest people to ignore. How can black people openly carry a real gun when we can't even pick up a BB gun in a store without arousing suspicion? The answer in America is that the Second Amendment doesn't really apply to black people.Consider this. In the hours since the protests began in Ferguson, Missouri, gun sales spiked in the St. Louis area. It seems some whites are scared to death of violent black people, even though the only person who's been killed in the past week of turmoil in St. Louis was 18-year-old Michael Brown.Imagine what might happen if black people started buying up scores of weapons at gun stores and posting pictures of ourselves carrying them on the streets to protect ourselves? We don't have to wonder. When the Black Panthers did this in the 1960s, California's Republican Governor Ronald Reagan, the patron saint of white conservatives, signed a law called the Mulford Act which prohibited the carrying of firearms on your person, in a vehicle, or in any public place or street. So does it really matter if Ezell Ford had a gun on him when he was killed? Perhaps it allows his defenders to maintain some sense of moral high ground, but it does not change the problem with race in our country. In America, a black kid with a bag of Skittles is far more "suspicious" than a white man carrying an assault rifle. That's why studies have shown that police are more likely to shoot unarmed black suspects than unarmed white ones. A white man with a gun is assumed to be a law-abiding patriot, while a black man with a gun is assumed to be a lawless thug. When a black man's exercise of his constitutional right stamps him with an instant presumption of guilt, he understands the Second Amendment isn't designed to protect him. But if white Americans want blacks to respect the law, then they must understand how pervasive racial disparities undermine confidence in our laws and our criminal justice system. If the public conversation about Michael Brown, Ezell Ford, Eric Garner, Renisha McBride, Trayvon Martin, and other victims does nothing else, I hope it strikes another nail in the coffin of the delusion of colorblindness in America. Until white people finally acknowledge the persistence and the depth of their own conscious and subconscious racial biases and assumptions, unarmed black people will continue to die from their mistakes. Aurora, Colo. (PRWEB) August 13, 2014

The next episode of “Extreme Weight Loss” Season Four introduces a man from Oklahoma City who put on weight as he battled depression after serving in the military. It also introduces a Las Vegas woman who’s been overweight and bullied since childhood. Only one of the two will complete the full year-long transformational journey.

Featuring a unique, non-competitive approach to weight loss transformations, “Extreme Weight Loss” airs TUESDAY, AUGUST 19 (8:00-10:00 p.m., ET/PT) on the ABC Television Network.

Kenny is a 35-year-old married father of three who quickly gained 150 pounds after leaving the Marines. When severe tornadoes ripped through his hometown of Moore, Okla. in 2013 – destroying his children’s school and his childhood home -- Kenny realized how short life really is and vowed to make a lifestyle change.

36 year-old Christy has been overweight her entire life. Growing up she experienced severe, painful bullying and in elementary school she attempted suicide by riding her bike into oncoming traffic and was hit by a pickup truck. Now a caretaker to her ailing mother, Christy rarely leaves the house.

This episode documents Kenny’s and Christy’s physical and emotional journeys.

New in Season Four, each “Extreme Weight Loss” participant spends the first 90 days of his or her weight loss journey at the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center (AHWC) in Aurora, CO. Holly Wyatt, MD, medical director for the AHWC, also serves as medical director for the television program and is seen on the show each week helping participants safely lose up to half of their body weight.

At the end of this episode, one show cast member, Kenny or Christy, will “pay it forward” by giving a friend or family member the opportunity to transform his or her life. The CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center will provide a scholarship to the one-week, evidence- based “Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp” transformation program.

The University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center offers some of the country’s most advanced research and science-based expertise, focusing on a comprehensive weight loss and weight management approach, including fitness, nutrition and wellness services. Billionaires Write Checks For Gun Control In Washington State

L.A. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has joined other billionaires and millionaires in donating money to push a gun control initiative in Washington state, which will expand firearm background checks to online purchases and gun shows.

But online sales from any retail store anywhere in the country already require a background check.

According to Bloomberg.com, "Ballmer and his wife gave $580,000" to the initiative. In so doing they took their place along side a myriad of other uber-wealthy donors who spend money in hopes of securing the kind of gun control the state's legislature wouldn't pass.

Other donors include Bill and Melinda Gates, who gave $50,000; Jon Shirley, who gave $50,000; Nicolas Hanauer, who gave $385,000; and Rich Barton, who gave $42,500.

Barton told Bloomberg.com that financial support for more gun control made sense: "It's blindingly obvious that everyone who buys a gun ought to get a background check."

Elliot Rodger (Santa Barbara gunman), Ivan Lopez (Ft. Hood gunman 2014), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard gunman), James Holmes (Aurora theater gunman), and Nidal Hasan (Ft. Hood gunman 2009) all got a background check for their gun purchases, but that did not prevent their crimes.

These Jaw-Dropping Photos Of The Great Lakes Night Sky Seem Too Beautiful To Be Real

There's nothing like a sky full of bright stars to remind you of the vastness of the universe and the breathtaking beauty of Mother Nature.Photo of Tahquamenon Falls by Shawn Stockman-Malone for LakeSuperiorPhoto.
The scene in the photo above isn't an otherworldly vision; it's a common sight in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Residents and tourists are drawn to the region because of its variety of natural wonders visible during the day -- and night: Light pollution barely touches the unending skies that stretch over stately forests, meadows humming with fireflies, rocky cliffs and sandy beaches on the three Great Lakes that surround the quiet "North Country."

Peaceful nights are one of the best reasons to go to the UP, and when you see photos captured by Shawn Stockman-Malone, it's clear why.Photo of the Au Sable Lighthouse at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the Milky Way by Shawn Stockman-Malone for LakeSuperiorPhoto.
Stockman-Malone runs photography gallery LakeSuperiorPhoto in Marquette, Michigan, a bustling college and former mining town on the Lake Superior coast. From there, she makes short trips all over the peninsula, capturing nighttime (and daytime) scenes in spots like the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Whitefish Point and Brockway Mountain Drive. She captures views -- including clear skies, falling stars, impressive storms and the swirling colors of the aurora borealis -- that sometimes look too beautiful to be real.Photo of a lightning storm on Lake Superior by Shawn Stockman-Malone for LakeSuperiorPhoto. But they are. When Stockman-Malone shoots the Northern Lights, she uses long exposures to capture an image that isn't too dark, and the "accumulation of light makes the scene brighter and more vivid than what your eye actually sees." But the intense colors the camera picks up are actually happening, and she said she keeps her post-shooting manipulation to a minimum.

While Stockman-Malone does monitor sun weather to try to catch views of the Northern Lights, much of her work is guided by chance -- and by being ready to photograph at any time. Once, her dog was scared and woke her up when lightning struck, and she caught a shot of the Northern Lights over the storm.

"You never know what Mother Nature has up her sleeve, and just hope you catch it," Stockman-Malone said about her night photography practice in an email to The Huffington Post. "The Milky Way moves across the sky and can be found rising and setting in different directions throughout the year, so there will always be new perspectives in new locations. Same thing goes for moonrises and moonsets. Then there's meteor showers, conjunction of planets, appearance of comets, etc. so there's always something new happening."Photo of the aurora borealis off of M-28 in the Upper Peninsula by Shawn Stockman-Malone for LakeSuperiorPhoto.
"Seeing the color of the water of Lake Superior crashing into the [breakwater] in Grand Marais, Michigan, during a gale in the mid-90s got me hooked on Lake Superior, the most beautiful color of aquamarine blue/green you can imagine," she said. "The beauty of this area is when my interest in photography became an obsession. ... I moved to the Upper Peninsula a year or two later, with no job lined up, to an area where good jobs are hard to find."Photo of a sunset on Lake Superior by Shawn Stockman-Malone for LakeSuperiorPhoto.
Since then, Stockman-Malone turned her obsession into a business where she gets to explore, marvel at and photograph the beauty that she seeks out on a daily basis. She shares her work on her gallery's Facebook page, hoping to inspire others the way Lake Superior -- large and powerful like an ocean, clean and undeveloped like a small lake and changing constantly without warning -- has inspired her.

"Those that go out of their way to live near Lake Superior really appreciate daily the impact the big lake has on many aspects of their lives," she said.

Apollo Minerals to drill IOCG targets at Mars Aurora Tank

$
0
0
Apollo Minerals (ASX:AON) has confirmed initial drill targets and hole positions at its Mars Aurora Tank Joint Venture Project in the Gawler Craton, South Australia.

In terms of exploration model, Mars Aurora Tank has similarities in size and style to the nearby Prominent Hill IOCG deposit about 110 kilometres to the east.

The drilling program, which will commence within four weeks, will also test large-scale IOCG targets at Bundi South and other Eaglehawk JV sites.

Other targets to be tested into a strong chargeability anomaly possibly associated with highly anomalous surface gold geochemistry and an undrilled, non-magnetic dense body in proximity to historic drilling which returned anomalous iron, copper and gold.

This drill program will be Apollo’s largest to date and preliminary results will be available from late September.

Apollo is earning a 75% interest in the Mars Aurora Tank (EL4433) from Marmota Energy (ASX:MEU). It also holds 100% of the adjacent Mars Prospect situated immediately south of EL4433.

The company had in July raised $2.2 million through a placement of 100 million shares at $0.022 each to fund the drilling.

*Drilling Program*

Apollo’s exploration has suggested that Mars Aurora Tank may be comparable in size and style to OZ Minerals’ (ASX:OZL) nearby Prominent Hill IOCG deposit that in 2013 produced 73,362 tonnes of copper and 128,045 ounces of gold contained in concentrates.

The position of the strong chargeability anomaly and highly anomalous gold and light rare earths between the linear dense and magnetic body to the east; and the linear, dense and non-magnetic bodies to the west is similar to the gold and copper mineralisation at Prominent Hill.

Initial drill targets and hole positions have been confirmed for the drilling, which is part of a broader program that will also test a number of IOCG targets at both the Mars Aurora Tank and Eaglehawk JV Projects where Apollo is earning 75% interests.

Analysis of recently acquired ground gravity data from the Eaglehawk JV is currently being finalised and drill targets for that JV are expected to follow shortly.

A number of large IOCG targets have been identified as part of this process and several of these, including a portion of the Bundi South IOCG target will be tested as part of the upcoming drill program.

Pending satisfaction of drilling notification procedures, drilling is to commence within four weeks.

This drill program will be Apollo’s largest to date and preliminary results will be available from late September.

Drill hole 14AT001 will test one of the strong chargeability anomalies possibly associated with highly anomalous surface gold geochemistry identified from recent RAB drilling.

Results from this hole would verify the potential for significant high grade gold in the near-surface zone.

Drill hole 14AT002 will test an undrilled, non-magnetic and dense body in close proximity to historic drilling which returned anomalous iron, copper and gold.

This hole would verify the potential for haematite alteration and high grade copper mineralisation at depth.

*Analysis*

Drilling at the Mars Aurora Tank Project will begin within four weeks and seek to unlock its potential, which is promising given a similar exploration model to the Prominent Hill IOCG deposit.

This will also test the large-scale IOCG targets at Bundi South and other Eaglehawk JV sites.

The program is highly anticipated and will be watched closely.

Gateway Cautions Williams' Death Illuminates Unpredictable Undertow of Co-Occurring Disorders

While the specific circumstances surrounding Robin Williams’ untimely death may never come to light, increasing awareness regarding the interrelationship between mental health and substance abuse issues can offer a glimmer of hope to millions of people suffering with co-occurring disorders amid a tragic loss.

Chicago (PRWEB) August 15, 2014

While the specific circumstances surrounding Robin Williams’ untimely death may never come to light, increasing awareness regarding the interrelationship between mental health and substance abuse issues can offer a glimmer of hope to millions of people suffering with co-occurring disorders amid a tragic loss.

Depression, for example, afflicts an estimated 350 million people across the globe according to the World Health Association. Furthermore, since one in three depressed people also suffer from some form of substance abuse or dependence*--more than 120 million people in the world have struggles similar to Williams’. And, to complicate matters even more, adults with substance use disorders are more likely than those without abuse to have serious thoughts of suicide (12.6 percent vs. 3.0 percent) according to SAMSHA.

"Due to the intense psychological distress associated with mental illness accompanied by substance abuse, co-occurring disorders are linked to suicidal ideation and suicide. Feeling a desire for immediate relief from such intense psychological pain can lead to thoughts of suicide as a means to escape the emotional agony," explains Dr. Greg Tierney, a licensed psychologist and Program Director at Gateway Alcohol & Drug Treatment Center in Aurora, Ill.

Having quit alcohol and drugs cold turkey and remaining sober for 20 years, Williams divulged in a Good Morning America interview that an overwhelming sense of fear preceded his relapsed in 2006.

"While it's not uncommon for feelings like fear, anxiety and loneliness to precede relapse, the feelings associated with relapse itself, like guilt, powerless and shame, only intensify one's depressive state. The interaction between such experiences cause an individual to feel hopeless and defeated," says Dr. Tierney.

Historically, substance abuse and mental health issues have been conceptualized and treated separately, initiating a misleading assumption that the issues are isolated. Later, it was believed one issue caused the other.

Presently, a mental health condition, such as major depressive disorder or anxiety, in conjunction with a substance use disorder is called a co-occurring disorder. Hence, today's integrated treatment premise is that each issue and the interplay of issues are taken into consideration.

In a 2009 New York Times interview, Williams expressed one of his hardest hurdles in life was dealing with the underlying issues related to his addiction. A poignant insight, Williams not only revealed the depths of his emotional hardship, he also reinforced the importance of embracing integrated treatment for complicated medical conditions like co-occurring disorders.

According to research gathered by SAMHSA, combining strategies from the fields of psychiatry and addiction treatment can lower the relapse rate among rehab graduates, reduce the number of suicide attempts and foster long-term abstinence.

"Substance abuse is rooted in avoidance. That's why Gateway clients learn about the illness and are exposed to strategies like mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy to address anxiety and impulsivity, improve self-awareness and enhance self-confidence. Successful treatment of co-occurring mental health issues can help foster the tools and knowledge needed for lasting recovery," says Dr. Tierney.

Manufacturer websites play a limited role in the early stages of the car buying process as consumers favour automotive content sites. London, United Kingdom (PRWEB) August 16, 2014

Manufacturer websites play a limited role in the early stages of the car buying process as consumers favour automotive content sites. A study recently concluded by Kantar for Auto Trader suggests that more than half do not go to a car maker’s website in the first 30 days of their online research, choosing instead content-led sites to consider options, prices and to weigh-up the best possible deal.

In a rapid path-to-purchase that takes an average of just six weeks for 85% of new car buyers, 63% initially turn to content-led websites. The most visited site for people who were researching brand new cars is Auto Trader with 64%, three times as many as the second placed site, eBay at 22%, and with 13% going to GumTree.

Most used automotive site people use to research brand new cars
Auto Trader    64%
eBay    22%
GumTree    13%
Motors    9%
WhatCar?    8%
Parkers    7%
Pistonhead    6%
AutoExpress    5%
RAC    5%
TopGear    3%

Brand promiscuous buyers take just ten steps on the fast track to purchase, the study also reveals. And while 60% say they are considering up to three brands at the outset, online behavior points to an average of just 1.8 manufacturer sites visited, suggesting many options are dismissed at the initial research stage.

Number of brands consumers are considering when buying a new car.
1 car brand    9%
2 car brands    31%
3 car brands    25%
4 car brands    16%
5 car brands    7%
6 car brands    4%
7+ car brands    8%

“It is clear that automotive content sites play a leading role in an increasingly rapid path to purchase for new car buyers and Auto Trader is at the top of the car buying funnel,” said Chris Ward, Auto Trader display director. “Consumers are no longer brand loyal and automotive sites are now where buyers make their brand comparisons and decisions – even which brand to finally purchase.”

The Kantar study measured online desktop activity over a three month period tracking more than 300,000 transactions.

It also found that people do not necessarily follow their original purchase intention when considering options to buy a new, nearly new or used model. For example, of those who planned to buy a nearly new car, 18% bought brand new.

A recent separate study from Aurora Market Research among 1024 car buyers, 21% of the people buying a new car started out looking for a used car, while only 3% of people looking for buying a new car changed their mind and bought a used car. Research indicates that the more research you do, the more likely it is that you buy a new car.

62% of new car buyers don’t contact a dealer before arriving on their forecourt. This mirrors the average number of forecourt visits that has fallen by 41% in the last four years to an average of 2.2 visits in 2014 according to the latest Google Gearshift report. For new car buyers the average number of forecourt visits is down to 1.6.
