Baseball Hall of Fame's Cal Ripken, Jr. was on hand as 721 people brought the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title to the United States for Most People Blowing a Bubble Gum Bubble Simultaneously.

Aberdeen, MD (PRWEB) August 11, 2014

With an international crowd blowing bubbles with Big League Chew® Bubble Gum on the opening day of the 2014 Cal Ripken World Series, a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® title was achieved on August 8, 2014 for Most People Blowing a Bubble Gum Bubble Simultaneously. Baseball Hall of Fame great Cal Ripken, Jr. along with executives from Ford Gum, the maker of Big League Chew, were there to accept the official notification and certificate from a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator. The previous title achieved with 544 people was set June 6, 2013 by the Lester B. Pearson School in Aurora, Ontario, Canada.

“Babe Ruth League Baseball and Big League Chew Bubble Gum are a classic summer combo so it was an exciting day to bring this title to the United States where Big League Chew is made,” said George Stege, President of Ford Gum, makers of Big League Chew. “As the official bubblegum of Ripken Baseball I can think of no better time or place to make history than at the opening day of the 2014 Cal Ripken World Series.”

Each of the 18 qualifying World Series teams took part in the record making event, along with fans in the stands. It required:· Chewing Big League Chew Bubble Gum for one full minute
· Blowing a bubble, sealing it and holding it without deflating for: 30 seconds

"This was fun and the fact that the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS officials were on hand to verify the record made it that much more special. We want to thank Ford Gum and Big League Chew for kicking-off our World Series with this event, they are terrific partners," said Ripken, Jr.

Big League Chew Bubble Gum is the #1 shredded bubblegum in the United States, created by former Minor League Baseball pitcher Rob Nelson. It’s manufactured in Akron, NY and since its 1980 introduction, more than 500 million pouches of Big League Chew have been sold.

Established in 2001, Ripken Baseball, Inc. is a sports entertainment company based in Baltimore, Md. created by Cal Ripken, Jr. and Bill Ripken. Its mission is to inspire athletes through remarkable experiences and prepare them for life beyond the diamond through The Ripken Way. The 2014 Cal Ripken World Series takes place August 8-16, 2014.

Red State Democrats Running from Their Gun Control Votes

$

Red State Democrats Running from Their Gun Control Votes Red state Democrats who voted for the failed Senate gun control bill in April 2013 have been scrambling lately to focus their campaigns on anything but guns and gun control. With November closing in, they've even asked Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly to stay out of their states to avoid a shift in focus to guns or gun control.

But the reality is that Senators Mark Udall (D-CO), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Kay Hagan (D-NC), and Al Franken (D-MN) all voted for the Manchin-Toomey gun control bill in 2013--a bill that would have ended the private gun sales which free people have enjoyed in this country for nearly 220 years. It would have implemented an expansion of background checks from retail sales to private and forced every would-be gun owner to pass the same background checks Elliot Rodger (Santa Barbara), Ivan Lopez (Ft. Hood 2014), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard), James Holmes (Aurora theater), and Nidal Hasan (Ft. Hood 2009) passed, to name a few.

When Hagan voted for gun control, those around her said that doing so would bolster her chances of re-election in 2014. But by the end of last year, she was already losing ground because of the vote. It is, therefore, not surprising that she doesn't want a photo-op with Giffords and Kelly right now.

And Senator Udall certainly doesn't want gun control to become the topic of conversation in his state of Colorado, where successful recall elections cost two pro-gun control state senators their jobs and forced a third to resign.

The situation is so politically perilous for red state Democrats that even senators who didn't vote for Manchin-Toomey are staying as far away from Giffords and Kelly as possible.

As early as July of last year, as The Washington Post reported, Giffords and Kelly traveled to Alaska to talk to Senator Mark Begich (D-AL) about supporting gun control--only to find he was on vacation in an area too remote for phone service.

So Kelly spent time with Begich's brother, Tom Begich, who made it clear he "did not officially work for his brother or represent his views." He also suggested that Giffords and Kelly should not ask his opinion on background checks.

Religious leaders urge Obama to help minorities in Middle East

Denver, Colo., Aug 11, 2014 / 05:37 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- As persecution of religious minorities intensifies in Iraq, in the U.S. Christian, Jewish, and Muslim leaders have joined together to ask the Obama administration to work “urgently” to end religious persecution in the Middle East.

“We see today that there is a great universal danger coming to conquer all of the world, including our democratic civilization, in the name of a very strict, falsely represented and false religious dogma that has nothing to with mainstream Islam,” Father Andre Y-Sebastian Mahanna, director of ecumenical and interfaith relations for the Maronite Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon of Los Angeles, said at an Aug. 11 press conference in Denver.

“We still believe that there is hope to save a civilization of diversity and freedom for the sake of peace both in the East and the West,” said Fr. Mahanna, who helped organize the initiative.

The Peace Love and Coexistence (PLACE) Initiative aims to bring together Jewish, Christian, and Muslim leaders against religious intolerance and violence against any ethnic or religious group.

The initiative comes as the Islamic State, a Sunni Islamist caliphate, has targeted religious minorities – Christians, Shia Muslims, and Yazidis – for violence, theft, and persecution in the areas under the group’s control.

The initiative’s leaders signed a joint statement asking president Obama “to work urgently through diplomatic channels and ethical intervention to stop the murder and persecution of Christians in the Middle East, their violent displacement from their native homelands, and the destruction of their homes, properties, churches and places of worship.”

The statement also asks Obama to oppose the persecution of Jews and Muslims “with equal urgency.”

The statement urges religious leaders to “lead by example” by advocating for the safety and rights of all Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities in the Middle East.

Fr. Mahanna announced the initiative at the Archdiocese of Denver's St. John Paul II Center. He was joined by Archbishop Samuel Aquila; University of Denver international studies professor Shaul Gabbay; and Sheik Ahmed Nabhan of the Masjid Al Salaam Aurora Islamic Center.

Archbishop Aquila said the PLACE statement is “a vital initiative” given the rise of the Islamic State.

“This is a case where we have an aggressor who is determined to impose its rule on innocent, defenseless human beings, through killing and brutal oppression.”

“The Islamic State will not engage in dialogue. Its only language seems to be murder, forced conversion and gunfire,” he added. “For these reasons it is necessary for the international community to protect the defenseless.”

The archbishop said he was encouraged by the administration’s humanitarian and military efforts to protect those threatened by the Islamic State.

He added the militants were also abusing religion. “Violence can never be carried out in the name of religion,” he said, citing Pope Francis’ appeals for peace.

Nabhan, an imam for 35 years who has lived in the Denver area since 1993, likewise denounced the Islamic State.

“On behalf of the Muslim community in Denver, Colorado, I would like to raise my voice against ISIS and would like all of you together, Muslim, Christian, and Jews, to (cut) off the way of evil, everywhere,” he said.

“This is our responsibility to our Lord,” he said, urging peace, mercy, and affection.

Gabbay said that Jewish communities are “deeply, deeply concerned for the tragic persecution of Christians.”

“We believe that saving one life is equivalent to saving a whole world. We pray for peace, love, human dignity and safety for all minorities. We are united with our brothers from all different religions.”

He said he is “extremely honored” to be a part of the PLACE initiative, calling it “a light in the darkness.” He prayed for strength and wisdom to combat the “human tragedies” facing religious minorities, particularly in such countries as Iraq and Syria.

Fr. George Shawareb, pastor of St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church in the Denver suburb of Arvada, also voiced support for the initiative.

A relative of one of his Iraqi parishioners had urged action to “make sure someone hears our voice.”

“People are dying. Countries are being destroyed. We need your help,” the priest said.

The statement calls on Muslim leaders in the U.S. to join the call for an end to the killing of innocents.

“To advance this cause, it is crucial that groups of authentic Muslims, Christians and Jews in the United States lead by example and advocate for the safety and the right to exist for all Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities in the Middle East.”

The statement condemns and denounces “the preaching of hate against Christians, Jewish and Muslim people, who all have equal rights to live together safely in their homelands and nations in the Middle East.”

The statement says that basic human rights come from God. It endorses the right to “peaceful co-existence based upon mutual respect for our shared human dignity.”

The Archdiocese of Denver has organized an interreligious prayer gathering for Middle East peace at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on Aug. 11.

The prayer gathering was to draw representatives Catholic and Orthodox Churches from the Middle East; Protestant and Catholic representatives from Western Christianity; and Jews and Muslims.

The prayer service is set to include readings from the Pentateuch, the New Testament, and the Koran, as well as hymns and prayers for peace.

Scheduled prayers included Arabic-language prayers as well as the Our Father chanted in Hebrew, Syro-Aramaic, Greek, Latin, and English. Reported by CNA 1 day ago.

Aurora, Illinois (PRWEB) August 12, 2014

Digi-Me is a video technology company that is taking the talent acquisition industry by storm, making it fast, easy, and affordable for talent acquisition professionals to create videos for job openings and brand messaging that land better quality candidates. Hot on the heels of the release of their cloud-based content management system, which allows clients to manage their videos through an online library and access real-time metrics reports, Digi-Me is now proudly unveiling a new look for their signature product--the Digi-Me job video.

Digi-Me job videos take standard text job descriptions and convert them into professional, engaging, 60-second videos showcasing current job openings and company culture. Each video contains an "apply" button and "share" buttons, so viewers can easily post the job videos on all their favorite social media sites, allowing each unique video to take on a life of its own and spread virally across the web. Digi-Me job videos also come with cloud-based tracking technology, mobile compatibility, and automatic integration into a client's ATS.

Traditionally, Digi-Me job videos have been filmed on a CNN-style set. The on-air talent sits at a news desk while block text graphics summarizing the various talking points appear below them and over their right shoulder. In the new design, the talent is featured standing in front of a clean, modern background. With the help of digital technology, an animated logo and text talking points glide gracefully onto and off of the screen.

This new format not only offers customers an exciting new option but also provides the flexibility to make easy graphic changes. "We felt the time was right to expand the look of our videos and create something that would appeal to different demographics," explained Digi-Me CEO, Roger Stanton. In particular, the new format was made with younger job-seekers and trendier companies in mind, while the news desk will likely remain the preferred style for mature candidates and conservative organizations. Moving forward, both choices will be available to Digi-Me clients.

The new job video look is just the tip of the iceberg in the evolution of the Digi-Me product line. "When it comes to our solution, we are constantly exploring new ways to make it better and meet the changing needs of our clients and the marketplace in general," said Stanton. "Now that we have this new technology, the possibilities are pretty much endless."

NSF International Expands Plastic Pipe Testing Capabilities With Acquisition of Jana Laboratories’ Testing Assets

Acquisition meets increasing demand for expedited plastic pipe performance and custom R&D testing

ANN ARBOR, Mich., USA and AURORA, Ont., Canada (PRWEB) August 12, 2014

NSF International has acquired the laboratory portion of Jana Laboratories Inc., an engineering consulting and laboratory testing firm that serves the global water and plastic pipe industries. Jana Laboratories’ 14-person laboratory staff and 20,000-square-foot laboratory in Aurora, Ontario will be renamed NSF Janalab and become part of NSF’s global network of ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia.

The acquisition expands NSF’s pipe testing capabilities, making them the largest provider of oxidative resistance stress testing in the world and the largest provider of hydrostatic performance stress testing in North America. NSF Janalab includes a 4,000-square-foot Advanced Pipe Test Facility II, which has the largest oxidative resistance stress testing capacity in the world, as well as significant hydrostatic performance stress testing capacity. These capabilities, along with NSF International’s existing global laboratory capabilities, combine to make NSF one of the leading providers of performance and health effects testing and certification for the global plastic pipe industry.

Jana will retain the consulting and training portion of its business under the name Jana.

“The increased demand for plastic pipe has led to a greater need for state-of-the-art testing capabilities and technical expertise to protect public health,” said Kevan P. Lawlor, President and Chief Executive Officer of NSF International. “Both NSF International and Jana customers will benefit from more cost efficient and streamlined health effects and performance testing services for plastic pipe, including highly specialized tests for oxidative resistance, hydrostatic design stress testing and large diameter pipe testing. The acquisition also provides clients additional R&D capability and independent consulting resources through Jana.”

Plastic piping plays an essential role in the distribution of gas, drinking and wastewater worldwide. In fact, global demand for plastic pipe is projected to rise 8.5 percent annually through 2017 to 11.2 billion meters.* Testing and certification to internationally-recognized standards verifies plastic piping products have met the required durability, performance and safety criteria for use in commercial and residential applications.

NSF International has served as a global provider of testing and certification for the plastic pipe industry for nearly 50 years. NSF developed the American national standards for pipes and other products that treat or come into contact with drinking water and certified more than 60,000 products to these standards. In 1990, the U.S. EPA replaced its own drinking water product advisory program with these NSF standards.

NSF’s expanded capabilities include:· Oxidative Resistance Testing: NSF Janalab’s Advanced Pipe Test Facility is one of the largest in the world, capable of accelerated testing of the long-term impact of disinfectants such as chlorine, chlorine dioxide and chloramines on plastic material performance. Plumbing codes and product standards require oxidative resistance testing for products such as PPR (Polypropylene Random Copolymer), PEX and PE-RT (polyethylene of raised temperature resistance) pipes.

· Hydrostatic Design Stress (HDS) Testing: NSF Janalab’s HDS testing facility is the largest in North America. This testing establishes the long-term pressure/stress capabilities of the pipe per procedures such as PPI-TR3, ASTM D2837 and ISO 9080.

· Slow Crack Growth (SCG) Validation / Rapid Crack Propagation (RCP) Testing: With the acquisition, NSF gains RCP capabilities and increases its SCG capabilities. SCG is an essential capability because a majority of polyethylene (PE) pipe failures in the field are attributable to brittle slow crack growth fractures. RCP is imperative for gas piping systems and there is limited testing capacity in North America.

· Testing for Large Diameter Plastic Pipe: NSF can now test plastic piping up to 24 inches in diameter at elevated temperatures.

To ensure plastic pipe companies have the strongest combination of consulting and laboratory technical expertise, NSF International has developed an agreement with Jana that will benefit both organizations’ clients. Through the agreement, Jana will be able to provide independent consulting services to NSF clients and NSF will be able to provide testing services to Jana’s clients. The two organizations also will work together in the development of new standards.

“Jana has experienced significant growth in our consulting business over the past few years. The sale of our laboratory assets will enable us to focus our efforts on our consulting and training business to provide even greater service to our clients across the value chain from manufacturer to pipeline owner. We also look forward to providing independent consulting and other services to NSF and NSF’s clients going forward as part of an ongoing agreement,” said Wayne Bryce, President & CEO of Jana.

“We will continue to work in cooperation with Jana for the benefit of our mutual clients and the global plastic pipe industry. Together, NSF and Jana will continue to focus on assisting companies worldwide in developing and bringing new, high quality products to market quickly and cost effectively,” added Lawlor.

Companies seeking more information about NSF’s plastic piping services can contact americas(at)nsf(dot)org or visit NSF’s website. You can also email europe(at)nsf(dot)org, asia(at)nsf(dot)org, brasil(at)nsf(dot)org, and info(at)nsf(dot)org(dot)cn (China) for additional information.

Editor’s note: To schedule an interview with an NSF International plastic piping expert, contact Greta Houlahan media(at)nsf(dot)org or +1 734-913-5723.

About NSF International: NSF International is a global independent organization that writes standards, and tests and certifies products for the water, food, health sciences and consumer goods industries to minimize adverse health effects and protect the environment (nsf.org). Founded in 1944, NSF is committed to protecting human health and safety worldwide. Operating in more than 155 countries, NSF International is a Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization Collaborating Center on Food Safety, Water Quality and Indoor Environment.

NSF led the development of the American National Standards for all materials and products that treat or come in contact with drinking water. Today, all major plumbing codes require certification to NSF standards for pipes and plumbing components in commercial and residential buildings. NSF International is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

Additional NSF services include management systems registration through NSF-ISR; sustainability standards development, claims and product verification through NSF Sustainability; food safety and quality programs through the NSF Global Food Safety Division; and testing and certification programs for bottled water and beverages, dietary supplements and consumer product industries.

Full Cycle Bikes to host speaker Len Forkas, founder of non-profit Hopecam, currently helping 5 Colorado Kids with Cancer Stay Connected to Friends. Leadville Series pulls Forkas to Colorado along with sharing his passion and his mission.

Reston, Virginia (PRWEB) August 13, 2014

In 2002, when entrepreneur Len Forkas learned his nine-year-old son had leukemia, his own life changed forever. In 2003, Len founded Hopecam, a nonprofit that uses technology to connect young cancer patients with their friends at school to combat social isolation. Hopecam helps children with cancer in 32 states, including 5 being treated at Colorado Children’s Hospital in Aurora.

Turning to exercise to help cope with the stress of his son’s illness, Len began competing in endurance races to raise awareness and resources to help Hopecam reach more children. In 2012, he qualified as a solo competitor in what is widely known as “the toughest bike race in the world.” Race Across America is a 3,000-mile bike race from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD, that must be completed in twelve days. Len finished in 11 days.

Len wrote a book about this experience, What Spins the Wheel, and will share his story at Full Cycle Bicycle Store this Thursday, August 14 at 7:30 p.m. Full Cycle is located at 1795 Pearl Street, Boulder, CO 80302.

Forkas is in Colorado to complete the last leg of the Leadman series, the 100 Miles Race in Leadville this Friday and Saturday. Forkas is dedicating his run to raise money to help more Colorado children with cancer. Last weekend, Forkas finished the 100 Mile Mountain Bike Race and a 10K Run. In July, he completed a marathon and 50 mile bike ride.

In What Spins the Wheel, Len shares an inspirational story while incorporating leadership lessons on building a team to accomplish not only the almost impossible physical feat in completing Race Across America but also winning his division. Len’s experience underscores the importance of both an individual and a team’s commitment to something bigger than themselves.
