'I Was Scared To Death': What It's Like To Be A Doctor In A Supermax William Wright

William Wright

After 30 years as an ear surgeon and a short-lived retirement, William Wright replied to an ad for a physician position at the Colorado State Penitentiary (CSP), the state's maximum security prison housing the most violent and dangerous adult male offenders.

His eight-year experience as a general medicine doctor at CSP is now the basis of a book called "Maximum Insecurity: A Doctor In The Supermax." Business Insider spoke with Wright recently about what the prison is like from a doctor's perspective.

Wright sought the position at CSP because it was different from anything he'd done before, and he even thought it would be fun.

But that wasn't how he felt on his first day. “I was scared to death," he told Business Insider. "I had never been inside a prison, let alone worked in one.”

Wright felt claustrophobic and particularly intimidated by one of his first patients, young death row inmate Nathan Dunlap. In 1993, a 19-year-old Dunlap murdered four employees and seriously injured a fifth at the Aurora, Colorado Chuck E. Cheese where he formerly worked, before stealing cash and game tokens.

"He kind of smiled at me and he said, 'You’re scared of me, aren't you, Doc,'" Wright recalled of the moment he began his checkup. "I said, 'Well, you know, I'm just here doing an exam.' And he said, 'I be the baddest guy you’ve ever seen.' And he was.”

Gradually, Wright became more familiar with his surroundings and the characteristics of his patients. They were always escorted into his office shackled by their arms and feet, with at least two guards no more than five feet away. Some inmates tried to bribe Wright by offering to get him expensive contraband, like a Rolex watch, in exchange for helping them smuggle letters past censors or haul drugs.

Others pestered him with requests for things they didn't need, like painkillers, sleeping medications, and special shoes and diets. Such efforts were typically their only reason for being nice.

"Many of them are extremely charismatic. They're your best buddy. They'll just be so nice and helpful and respectful, until you say no," Wright said. "And then it's all over. They can turn on a dime and it's like flame comes out of their eyes."

The prisoners in CSP were "almost universally" sociopaths devoid of feeling empathy for anyone else, Wright said. “These guys aren’t ashamed of what they’ve done. They’re pissed that they got caught, but they don't really have much understanding about why they’re in prison, because to them they're just doing what they should be doing.”

Nonetheless, they were human just like anyone else when it came to the physical conditions Wright treated them for, ranging from warts to heart attacks.

That was even the case for Marvin Gray, an inmate so massive that six guards accompanied him to Wright's office, rather than the usual two. Fastened with extra shackles, Gray was intimidating to the other hardened convicts at CSP. The 3o0-pound Gray was a serial killer, leader of a white supremacist gang at CSP, and had a reputation for multiple rapes against fellow inmates, according to The Denver Post.

But Wright treated him like any other patient. “We got along great ... He was a big guy and because of that he had bad knees," Wright said. "I would see him and inject steroids into his knees, and he’d feel better. It’s kind of like pulling a thorn out of a lion’s paw.”

William Wright

In order to perform his duties as best he could, Wright remained professional toward the inmates, avoiding discussing anything beyond their medical conditions. "I think probably the thing that helps the most is I treat them with respect. It's always 'Mr. So-and-So' and I never give them any grief about anything," Wright said. "It's just strictly professional, and if I show them respect, they show respect back, and that works out pretty well.”

He also didn't seek to learn the crimes his patients had committed, although some voluntarily told him. "It's really none of my business in the first place, and I'm afraid that it would change my attitude toward them,” Wright said.

To maintain his safety, Wright remembered never to let the inmates come between him and the door or allow them to pick up something as a weapon. Only one inmate tried to attack him. “I was telling him something he didn't want to hear, and he was pissed off about it," Wright recalled. "He's sitting on the gurney shackled hand and foot and yet he took a dive at me and all I did was sort of step back and push him down. He didn't get very far and the correctional officers were on him like white on rice.”

Wright was able to find subtle humor in his surroundings. When he took one muscular, six-and-a-half-foot inmate off seizure medication because he didn't need it, the prisoner began faking epileptic fits whenever he visited the clinic. "It got to be kind of comical," Wright laughed. "I'd just step over him and tell him not to trip anybody."

That prisoner claimed he wanted to become a preacher when he was released. "When he got out, darned if there weren’t a dozen people who picked him up at the bus stop, and they were all 'Kumbaya' down to Texas together to start a church," Wright recalled.

The inmates weren't the only source of humor. When he couldn't fit his legs underneath his desk because his chair was too tall, maintenance staff improvised by cutting a 2x4 piece of wood and placing the slabs under the desk legs.

Wright details that humor in his book "Maximum Insecurity."

“I wanted to show them what it was really like to function inside a supermax prison," Wright said. "Nobody knows what happens behind the walls, and it's not like what you see on TV. I think think it's funny as hell the stuff that goes on there.”

Nowadays, Wright runs the infirmary at the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility housing medium security inmates, but he says he's willing to return to CSP if the state needs him there.

Good Guy With a Gun

$

Mark Glaze knows guns. The son of a former licensed gun seller from Gunnison, Colorado might seem an unlikely choice for a gun control advocate, yet Glaze, who had spent years as a lawyer, progressive lobbyist and gay activist, found his calling with Mike Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which he helped relaunch as Everytown for Gun Safety. Glaze recently ended his tenure with the organization, and his departure had the unusual distinction of winning praise from both mainstream news outlets -- Reuters credited him with helping build "a leading counterweight to the National Rifle Association" -- and guns.com, which praised him as a "young standout." When it came to his many television appearances for the cause, there was virtually no one who could take on Glaze's personality, rock-solid reasoning and advocacy bona fides. I spoke to Glaze in an exit interview of sorts.

Mark Glaze's last day after 3.5 years as executive director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, then Everytown, in our NYC offices, June 13, 2014. Photo credit: Danny porter.*So, James Brady just died and you recently left your position at Mayors Against Illegal Guns -- do you think these events portend, good or bad omens in terms of gun control legislation?*

Nobody is indispensable in life, and Everytown's doing just fine without me, which is both a source of pride and a jagged little pill, to quote Alanis Morissette. But Jim Brady was a star to guide your ship by, and I'm not just talking about what he did for gun policy. Here's a guy who was grievously wounded, and had a very tough road back. Nobody would have blamed him for sitting the rest of his life out. Instead he and Sarah, his great wife, spent their lives and their energy in a way that mattered. It took seven years to pass the law that bears their name -- people like me who are in a hurry, to get things done, forget that. But the background check system they helped build, imperfect as it is, has stopped more than two million felons and other dangerous people from buying guns, and no serious person doubts it's saved thousands of lives. How many people can say that? Not me. It was a life well-lived.

As for the state of the movement, it's stronger than it's been in a generation. To start -- there's an actual movement of millions of people who care about this, and not in a "kinda" way, but in a way that has them signing pledges to vote only for candidates who support common-sense gun laws. In a way that has them holding house parties in Kentucky on weekends to sign up dozens of new allies. Not a lot of issues have that kind of energy behind them today. And that's why states with Democratic and Republic governors -- we're talking about the Scott Walkers and Bobby Jindahls of the world -- are signing bills to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. And those victories will beget more and bigger victories in the states, and ultimately in Congress. We're getting there, faster than people think.

*What were the high points of your tenure?*

No question that helping arrange the merger of Moms Demand Action and Mayors Against Illegal Guns was the high point for me. These moms are the best thing going, in not just our movement, but in any advocacy effort in the country. They're giving us, for the first time in a long time, the chance for symmetrical warfare with the NRA. Because like core NRA voters, they are, to understate the case, intense. They actually get up every morning and care about whether their kids are going to come home safely, and they do something about it, and they are not going away. And the fact that that merger started with a secret meeting in Big Sky, Montana and conversations with Shannon Watts, my colleague Brina Milikowsky and me on a gondola over the summer doesn't hurt. If I had a book in me, which I don't, it would be a cool chapter.

The other high point was passing a universal background check bill in my home state of Colorado. In the relatively short time that bill's been in place, it's already stopped hundreds of prohibited buyers from getting a gun -- every one of them a ticking time bomb. At the same time, 2013 was a banner year for gun sales there. So for me, it's Exhibit A that gun ownership and tough laws to keep firearms out of the wrong hands are totally consistent, and the obvious way forward.

*The lows?*

After Newtown, when a majority of senators representing a minority of the population blocked what 92 percent of the public, including 74 percent of NRA members and 81 percent of gun owners want: background checks for every gun buyer. It was a low point because we lost, of course, but also because it was one of those moments when it all could have fallen apart -- when people could have lost faith and let the steam go out of the movement and just wandered away. That happens a lot in public policy fights. But instead, they got mad, and got determined, and that loss became the moment that really built a movement. So even that low wasn't so low, in the end.

*Why did you decide to you leave?*

Like everyone else who worked on guns these past few years, I put a lot of myself into this -- and the "this" started with the Tucson mass shooting, and ran through the Aurora mass shooting, and the Newtown mass shooting, and the tens of thousands of gun murders that happened in those years. And as we were fighting those fights, I think Everytown had a lot to do with breathing life into a dead issue, along with other new organizations. Our own group grew from eight employees to eighty -- most of them in New York City, where I don't live. I loved my job, and the team, but I needed a break from an issue that's emotionally tough. I just spent a week at the beach. I haven't done that in three years.

*You've been a lobbyist for a dozen years, do you think that that the system is irrevocably broken?*

Badly broken, yes. Completely or irrevocably, no. One of the last consulting projects I worked on before I went to Everytown full-time was a campaign for the Human Rights Campaign aimed at getting the Senate to reverse the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. And we won. Health care reform passed. So big things are still possible, but they're much harder than they should be, and much slower.

The empirical fact is that for great change to happen, great disruption is sometimes needed, often in the form of some cataclysm. Look at money in politics -- which is a blight on our democracy and a national embarrassment. The Watergate scandals -- in which bags of money were literally being delivered to the political party committees -- helped usher in a cohort of reform-minded members of Congress in 1974 who implemented a raft of reforms, including campaign contribution limits. The flood of "soft money" in the 90s led to the McCain-Feingold soft money ban. I don't have any doubt that the Roberts court will continue -- in their friendly, "nothing happening here," incremental way -- whittling away at what remains of campaign finance limits, and the result, sooner or later, will be corruption and scandals that will so shock the system that there will be another wave of reform, sooner than we think.

It's the same with guns. Newtown rebuilt a movement. But it didn't change the federal laws, and there will be another horrendous mass shooting, and another, and another. And some of them will involve gaps in the laws that senators had the opportunity to fix. A felon who avoided a background check by buying from an unlicensed seller on a random website; a high capacity magazine. And sooner or later, Congress will decide they can't defy political gravity forever. And we will have reform.

*What would you do to change it?*

That's a big question, but one of the major structural problems is the virtual elimination of political competition in Congress. Thanks to self-interested Republicans and Democrats alike -- we're all to blame here -- the number of truly competitive House districts is a relative handful. That means that the majority of seats are safe, there is hydraulic pressure for members in those seats to be more conservative or liberal than moderate, the middle is virtually nonexistent, and compromise is a dirty word and virtually impossible. If I could pick two major and tough reforms, it would be redistricting reform -- each state would have to conduct redistricting through some variant of a nonpartisan commission that would produce more competitive districts -- and, probably, a constitutional amendment that returns to Congress and the states the power to regulate campaign fundraising and spending, including regulating outside groups. It's not the only answer, but until we get the Supreme Court the country deserves, it's a good organizing principal.

*What's next?!*

I'm consulting on some interesting projects, on my own for now, having some fun and thinking about how to spend the rest of my life. Reader opinions are welcome on that. Reported by Huffington Post 2 days ago.

The disease is a sleep disorder, involving irregular patterns in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and significant disruptions of the normal sleep/wake cycle. While the cause of narcolepsy is not completely understood, current research points to a combination of genetic and environmental factors that influence the immune system.

Bremont Homes, Toronto’s Finest Home Builder, Announces Most Important Steps When Moving Into a New Home

Bremont Homes (http://www.BremontHomes.com), the Greater Toronto Area’s finest home building company, is presenting advice on the critical steps that each new homeowner must follow when moving in to a new home.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) August 08, 2014

Bremont Homes (http://www.BremontHomes.com), the Greater Toronto Area’s finest home building company, is presenting advice on the critical steps that each new homeowner must follow when moving in to a new home.

“Buying a new home can be a complicated process, so it’s important to know the procedures so nothing is overlooked,” says Gary Breda, president of Bremont Homes. “After purchasing the home and getting welcome letters from the builders, the most pressing letter issued will be from the décor consultant to prepare for a décor appointment, followed by making a structural appointment and colour appointment. This process of varying décor could last up to 120 days.”

The subsequent letter will be to inform the homeowner that construction has commenced, followed by another letter confirming completion of framing, windows, and shingling of the roof. Breda explains that in the case of Bremont Homes, it’s going to take some time because, as premiere custom home builders in Toronto and throughout the GTA, they hold themselves to a high standard of quality.

“The next step will be for the homeowner to arrange a private walk-through with the décor consultant and then set up a pre-inspection,” he adds. “This will take place about 30–60 days prior to closing.

“About 30 days after closing, a follow-up letter will be sent to check in on the move-in progress, though we at Bremont Homes actually send two more check-up letters, one eight months after closing and another after 15 months,” Breda concludes. “All of these steps, when taken by Bremont Homes when having someone move into their custom home, are over and above Tarion warranty regulations.”

Recognized as one of the Greater Toronto Area’s finest home building companies, Bremont Homes is founded on a vision of quality design and workmanship, innovative style, and exceptional customer service. Over the years, Bremont Homes has developed a number of new communities and thousands of homes in Aurora, Burlington, Courtice, Georgetown, Maple, Pickering, Mississauga, Richmond Hill, and other prime locations in the Greater Toronto Area. Bremont Homes currently has a number of upscale communities with custom manors and luxury townhouses under development in Brampton and Wasaga Beach and on Lake Simcoe. Magna International Inc. (TSE:MG), North America’s largest auto-parts supplier, rose in morning trade after posting a higher second-quarter profit boosted by strong demand in North America and continued recovery in Europe.

Shares climbed 2.6 percent to $118.94 at 9:36 a.m. in Toronto. The stock had risen about 32 percent this year through yesterday.

Net income attributable to the company rose $510 million, or $2.32 per share, in the April-to-June period, from $415 million, or $1.78 per share, a year earlier, the Aurora, Ontario-based company said in a statement today.

Excluding restructuring charges, earnings were $2.37 per share, above analysts' estimate of $2.26.

Sales rose 5.6 percent to $9.46 billion during the quarter, ahead of the $9.36 billion analysts had predicted.

The company attributed the growth in sales to increases in North American, European and Asian production sales, partially offset by lower Rest of World production sales, complete vehicle assembly sales and tooling, engineering and other sales.

North American production sales climbed 10 percent, while European and Asian production sales improved 4 percent and 23 percent, respectively. Rest of world production sales were down 33 percent.

Magna said its complete vehicle assembly sales were slightly lower at $793 million in the latest quarter, while complete vehicle assembly volumes fell 11 percent to about 34,000 units.

Looking ahead, the company raised its full-year sales forecast to $35.6 billion-$37.3 billion from $34.9 billion-$36.6 billion.

Magna also declared a quarterly dividend of $0.38 for the quarter, payable on September 12 to shareholders of record on August 29.

Gabby Giffords to Maine Raising Money for Gubernatorial Candidate Supporting Gun Control On August 9 Gabby Giffords will "[try] to resurrect gun control" by appearing in Maine to raise money for gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud (D).

Michaud is currently the U.S. Rep. for Maine's 2nd District.

According to the Associated Press, Michaud says he and Giffords formed a friendship as "conservative 'blue dog' Democrats" during their time together in Congress, and he stands with her in pushing for more gun control now in the area of background checks.

He supports expanding background checks so that every gun purchaser – retail or private – is required to go through the same checks that Santa Barbara gunman Elliot Rodger, Fort Hood gunman Ivan Lopez, Arapahoe High School gunman Karl Halverson Pierson, DC Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis, and Aurora theater gunman James Holmes went through in order to acquire their guns.

Maine Republican Party spokesman David Sorensen responded to the news of Giffords coming to the state by saying, "[Michaud's] been telling constituents in northern Maine that he is a pro-gun rights candidate... [but] it doesn't get any less pro-gun than... raising money with Gabby Giffords."

Colorado Governor Fights To Stave Off Republican Challenger

By Daniel Wallis and Keith Coffman
DENVER, Aug 10 (Reuters) - When Colorado Democrat John Hickenlooper was elected governor four years ago, the ebullient former Denver mayor and brew-pub magnate could do little wrong.
Once spoken of as a possible vice presidential candidate in 2016, the 62-year-old has burnished his man-of-the-people image with impromptu banjo performances and folksy charm.
But after a first term wrought by controversies over gun laws, fracking and taxes, and with a strong Republican establishment candidate now lined up against him, Hickenlooper is now enmeshed in a tougher reelection fight than had been expected.
Painting the governor as weak and unprincipled, Republican opponents jumped on an apology he made to the state's elected sheriffs for approving part of a package of gun control laws following the Aurora and Newtown shootings.
And environmentalists have also slammed the former geologist for being too cozy with energy company executives in the state's emotive debate about fracking.
"It's going to be a very close race," said Floyd Ciruli, an independent Denver pollster and political analyst, adding that he thinks Colorado's strong economic recovery gives Hickenlooper the edge.

WILDFIRES AND FLOODS
Hickenlooper's Republican opponent, former congressman Bob Beauprez, dismayed the governor's supporters last month when he held off a GOP primary challenge from a maverick and polarizing contender, Tom Tancredo.
Beauprez's credentials bring him funding, and he'll need it. In their first head-to-head month, Hickenlooper raised about $353,000 from late June to late July, while Beauprez brought in around $261,000, campaign finance figures show.
Overall, Hickenlooper has raised some $3.4 million, and his team says it has spent $1.4 million on TV ads for the fall.
They appear to be running neck-and-neck, with one reputable poll last month giving the governor a 6-point lead, then just a day later another poll giving Beauprez a 1-point edge.
The second survey, by Quinnipiac University, said Hickenlooper's job approval rating fell to 48 percent, from 52 percent in April.
Still, that's a far cry from the 66 percent approval he enjoyed in late 2012, after being hailed for his calm response to the state's worst-ever wildfire, and then a deadly shooting rampage at a suburban Denver movie theater.
He also won plaudits last year when more devastating wildfires were followed by widespread floods, some of which he toured on crutches after having hip surgery.
It is the stricter gun laws he approved after the movie theater massacre that triggered his opponents' most vitriolic attacks. They also prompted most of Colorado's elected sheriffs to sue in federal court to try to block them, saying they severely restricted citizens' constitutional right to own and bear arms.
That lawsuit failed, but at a meeting with the sheriffs in Aspen in June, the governor said his administration had "screwed up" the issue of expanded background checks for gun buyers.
"I guess I didn't get it," Hickenlooper said.

RIVALS SMELL BLOOD
Supporters say he was trying to seek common ground with opponents, but his rivals smelled blood.
Beauprez called it a "bizarre" explanation that he said typified Hickenlooper's lack of leadership. He also cited the decision to grant a temporary reprieve to the state's longest-serving death row inmate, who was slated for execution last year until the governor intervened.
"If he won't lead, I will," Beauprez told Reuters.
The former congressman, who sold the family's dairy farm to develop a golf resort then made his fortune in banking, lost a gubernatorial race eight years ago to then-Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter.
Beauprez will also try to score against Hickenlooper over his backing for a renewable energy mandate that Beauprez said would hurt rural schools and hospitals by raising rates, as well as a failed $950 million tax hike for education reform proposed by the Democratic-led legislature.
Hickenlooper is fighting back. He says Colorado has gained more than 200,000 jobs since he took office, seen 32 consecutive months of job growth, and that unemployment has dropped from 9.1 percent in 2010 to 5.5 percent in June.
He hailed a deal he brokered in the fracking debate , and last month he named more than 120 prominent Democrats, Republicans and independents who he says support him.
They include some former donors to the Beauprez campaign such as Chad and Troy McWhinney, founders of the company that bears their name and which leads the redevelopment of Denver's recently reopened Union Station.
"Colorado has come so far in just a few years," the governor said in a statement. "We must keep our momentum going." (Reporting by Daniel Wallis and Keith Coffman; Editing by Eric Beech) Reported by Huffington Post 9 hours ago.
