American Sentinel University’s new e-book, ‘Are You Prepared to Identify and Prevent the Three Infections That Make Up Two-Thirds of All Healthcare Associated Infections?’ profiles risk factors and prevention techniques for the three most common infection threats in healthcare facilities today. Download the free e-book at http://www.americansentinel.edu/blog/2014/05/13/strong-nursing-leadership-is-essential-to-reducing-hais/.

Aurora, Colo. (PRWEB) July 24, 2014

American Sentinel University’s free e-book, ‘Are You Prepared to Identify and Prevent the Three Infections That Make Up Two-Thirds of All Healthcare Associated Infections?’ is a go-to guide to help nurses minimize the occurrence of hospital-acquired infection (HAI) risk factors and details basic prevention measures that every nurse should know to help prevent infections. The e-book is available for download at http://www.americansentinel.edu/blog/2014/05/13/strong-nursing-leadership-is-essential-to-reducing-hais/.

“As a nurse, it’s important to be sure to do all you can to prevent HAIs from happening to your patients and save your healthcare facility additional costs,” says Judy Burckhardt, Ph.D., MAEd, MSN, RN, dean, nursing programs at American Sentinel University. “This e-book is a great resource for nurses to review information about prevention of and interventions for HAIs.”

The Center for Disease Control recognizes the important role that nurses play in minimizing the occurrence of HAIs and have included nursing-specific interventions in their guidelines. As a result, hospitals everywhere are adopting evidence-based policies to reduce HAI rates and many are adding certified infection preventionists to the staff.

“Nurses can use an evidence-based approach to recognize conditions that might cause HAIs as a complication or breakdown in care and select appropriate interventions,” says Dr. Burckhardt.

Dr. Burckhardt says the e-book helps nurses prepare for potential problems before they occur, which supports their patient-advocacy role. These methods build the foundation for nurses to increase their leadership skills to become nurse leaders.

Preventing Healthcare Associated Infections
‘Are You Prepared to Identify and Prevent the Three Infections that Make Up Two-Thirds of all Healthcare Associated Infections?’ is a must read for nurses who want to learn how to use an evidence-based approach to prevent infections from happening. The e-book profiles risk factors and prevention techniques for the three most common infection threats in healthcare facilities today:

-Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)

-Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP)

-Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI)

Download E-book to Learn How to Minimize & Prevent Infections
The e-book 'Are You Prepared to Identify and Prevent the Three Infections that Make Up Two-Thirds of all Healthcare Associated Infections?' is available for download at http://www.americansentinel.edu/blog/2014/05/13/strong-nursing-leadership-is-essential-to-reducing-hais/.

Dr. Burckhardt notes that strong nursing leadership – including at the executive level – is instrumental in reducing the incidence of HAIs.

The industry-wide focus on HAIs has expanded career opportunities for nurses who want to specialize or move into management. Hospitals are in need of infection preventionists as well as nurse executive leaders who can direct the policy making process. Higher education is the first step toward landing these rewarding jobs.

Denver Lawn Care and Tree Service Company Swingle Takes Proactive Position on Pollinator Protection

Denver, Colorado’s Swingle Lawn, Tree and Landscape Care takes measures to reduce impact to pollinators while providing quality service.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) July 24, 2014

In recent years, there has been a rapid decline in the population of honeybees, known as Colony Collapse Disorder. Experts have found the honeybee population has decreased by about 50 percent. Pollinators can be exposed to different types of pesticides, including neonicotinoids through sprays and residue left on plants. The cause of CCD has not been identified by scientists, but it is known that some insecticides are lethal to pollinators, yet not all pesticides are lethal to pollinators. Swingle Lawn, Tree and Landscape Care is taking a stance to reduce the impact on honeybees while providing quality tree and plant health care services to customers in Colorado.

“As a leader in the green industry, we have a responsibility to promote awareness of this important ecological issue and take measures to ensure we do our part,” said Swingle President John Gibson.

As pollinators, bees are a critical part of our environment and food supply, which is why Swingle believes it’s important to take precautions to look out for pollinators while performing services for customers. Over the last several months, the company has taken measures to help clients understand how Swingle’s services have changed to reduce its potential impact on bees.· A priority was to retrain technicians. A change in labels required for technicians to be educated on updated label regulations. Beyond label training, which specifically mentions bees, continued training on other pesticides was provided for application methods.

· Swingle technicians have always been trained to be aware of areas where bees are present before spraying and if a customer or nearby yard accommodated beehives knowing what to look for.

· Swingle provides customers with options to relocate hives with local beekeepers, when possible.

· The company will not spray insecticides on any plant, shrub, or tree when in flower. Swingle redesigned treatment programs and timing to allow for this.

· Swingle will not inject pesticides into root systems of flowering annuals, perennials in flower, shrubs, or edibles.

· Where possible, the company will apply pesticides through the soil or trunk application pesticides rather than a topical spray to prevent drift to pollinator plants.

“An obvious need exists for a partnership between the green industry and beekeepers to protect this valuable resource while ensuring a healthy landscape,” says John Swayze Swingle Routing Manager and local beekeeper.

Protecting honeybees takes effort beyond the green industry. There is an opportunity for homeowners, gardeners, and many others to do their part. Making a difference in the environment and helping honeybees can start with planting for pollinators. Plants such as salvia, aster, sunflowers, lavender, and oregano are great food sources for pollinators, especially in Colorado. Another option for people to get involved is through beekeeping. Beekeeping classes are offered across the nation providing information about bee keeping in backyards, honeybee biology, and harvesting honey. Throughout the state of Colorado, certain cities allow bee keeping in backyards such as Denver, Boulder, and Aurora. Swingle partners Denver Botanic Gardens and Hudson Gardens both offer beekeeping courses. Rocky Mountain Bee also offers classes, in addition to relocation services and swarm collection.

Honeybees are crucial to the environment, pollinating fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Swingle takes measures to ensure we provide a quality service for our customers while having the least amount of impact on bees.

Disrupted: How Immigration Treated Me Like a Criminal at the US Border

$
0

*"We're denying you reentry into the United States and deporting you back to Mexico tonight. You won't be allowed back into the U.S."*

Those were the dreadful and unexpected words I received from two Customs and Border Protection officers as I returned to the U.S. through LAX airport.

My name is Aurora Chisté, proud Italian and founder of Hack for Big Choices, and this is how I was nearly deported and treated as a common criminal.

In April 2014, I had returned from Guadalajara, Mexico, after running a successful hackathon. I was looking forward to coming back to share what I had learned from the vibrant, entrepreneurial community I discovered in Mexico. I never suspected my entry back through LAX would become an exercise in frustration and near deportation.

I've lived in the U.S. legally for seven years, and I travel abroad quite often for business. I've become accustomed to the doldrums of international travel and the shuffle of immigration lines. You get to the passport officer, show your visa, get asked a few questions, and move on through. However, this time I was given the silent treatment and told to report to the immigration office without any explanation.

At the office, I was told to just sit and wait. The lack of the common courtesy of an explanation had me worried, and it was a long wait. No one would talk to me, and my requests to use the restroom were repeatedly ignored until a random officer walking by noticed and was kind enough to escort me. He asked me what I had done. I was upset and not feeling talkative, so I simply answered, "Nothing, he replied, "You seem like a good girl. Explain what happened and everything will be fine." I still wasn't sure what I even had to explain!

After considerable time, I was finally escorted into an interrogation room and confronted by two intimidating CBP officers who held looks of scorn and condemnation on their faces. I felt prejudged before I was even told what I was being held for. The officers proceeded to question why I held four separate visas and had been traveling back and forth from the U.S. for the past seven years. I explained to them that I had come to the U.S. to further my education and that my evolution from student to social entrepreneur mirrored my travels and the different visas I held. They seemed to see only an aberrant foreigner randomly traveling to and from the U.S., instead of a skilled person that American companies have tried to hire legally.

I further explained that my current work visa application had been complicated due to a filing mistake and that I had been waiting on a decision. This fell on deaf ears. They searched my backpack and found my hackathon badge, which drew incredible suspicion. They asked, "What's a hackathon? Are you a hacker?" I slowly explained that I'm a social entrepreneur promoting global change through the concept of 'hackathons,' where attendees work together and find solutions to community issues within a tight time constraint. They were dismissive and didn't seem to want to hear an explanation. We spoke two totally different languages. Mine, the language of reasoned hope and optimism. Theirs, the language of suspicious cynicism, fear, and ignorance.

After a litany of questions, I was finally given a reason why I was being held. The two officers viewed my travels as "gaming the system." I denied this, citing that I run a legitimate nonprofit organization based in the U.S., but they were adamant with their stance. My previous notion of being prejudged and condemned was accurate.

This is when I heard those dreadful words, "We're denying you reentry into the United States and deporting you back to Mexico tonight." I was handed a plane ticket, put into a small cage in the back of a police van, and transported to a secondary detention center. I was being treated like a common criminal without having committed any crime.

At our destination, four officers surrounded me. I was deeply embarrassed and ashamed walking against the traffic of happy travelers making their way back to everyday life. How was I being perceived? I soon found myself locked in a room with a pedophile, a woman smuggling $25,000 in cash, and unsavory others. The situation was getting out of hand for me, and I couldn't keep back the tears anymore. I didn't belong here. This wasn't the America I thought I knew.

I was given a final chance to speak to a supervising officer and one other. I composed myself and retold my entire story to them. An eternity passed, but I was finally given semi-positive news. The tall, blonde woman supervisor told me that she didn't want to ruin my life and was willing to let me back into the country on a tourist visa as long as I settled my affairs and left the country within a month. This meant I wouldn't be allowed to return for at least a year. It was a small respite after what I had just experienced, and I accepted my fate grudgingly. For the first time during the whole ordeal, I felt like I was finally being treated like a human being instead of a statistic. However, before I was finally released, the other officer turned to me and said hatefully, "If it wasn't for my supervisor here, I would have deported you immediately." Why did he harbor such hate and anger towards foreigners?

I have now been forced to leave the U.S., and I have a better understanding as to why many immigrants manifest feelings of being persecuted while simply trying to make life better for themselves and others. We are viewed as outsiders needing to prove ourselves worthy of being in the U.S. At the same time, I know there are also those who understand the difficulties faced by immigrants and are working hard to solve these issues.

I hope that my story can help fuel positive immigration reform in a country that has given me so much to be thankful for. America is where I learned to become a strong, independent woman capable of leading an international organization. Are We Welcome Entrepreneurs or Unwanted Criminals?

Even though I will be kept out of the U.S. for at least a year, I will continue my work with Hack For Big Choices within the international community. Hopefully, I can one day come back and create a better world with the country I still love.

The NRA's Most Ridiculous Video (So Far) Calls for Government Subsidized Free Ammunition

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has been responsible for countless nonsensical, totally illogical and sadistically irrational pro-gun slogans. It's kind of what the NRA does. Its executive vice president and chief crackpot, Wayne LaPierre is a never-ending geyser of these easy-to-repeat yet easily debunkable slogans. So it came as no surprise when the NRA released a brand new YouTube video that literally makes no sense whatsoever -- on any level. In fact, it's so off-the-rails that it's difficult to imagine even the most loyal NRA automatons buying into what it says. Here's the video (via MMFA):How can I make such a sweeping assumption about NRA loyalists? Mainly because the host of the video, NRA "commentator" Billy Johnson, isn't LaPierre or anyone who "looks" like your typical NRA goon. Not that they all look the same, but I've never seen any NRA people who look like the host of this video. Billy appears to be from the same casting agency that gave us the Healthcare.gov "Pajama Boy" and that leather-jacket hipster Millennial from a GOP video back in March. Put it this way, Billy looks less NRA and more PBR. Of course there's nothing wrong with casting Mr. Johnson, but it does, however, speak to the fact that the NRA is trying to look smarter and hipper. Unfortunately, the words coming out of Billy's mouth are just as ridiculous as if they came out of Ted Nugent's mouth.

Anyway, you might recall Billy's previous performance in which he suggested that we stop using the phrase "mass shootings" and the word "gunman" when events like Santa Barbara or Sandy Hook occur. Why? Because it makes guns, you know, look bad. If you think that's stupid, you ain't seen nothing yet.

*1) The title is crazy.* The video is titled "Everyone Gets A Gun." I won't even dig into the long list of ramifications commensurate with such an overly broad idea. No, not everyone gets to have a gun. Haven't LaPierre and the NRA been screaming about launching a mental health database accessible by gun dealers so mentally incompetent people can't buy AR-15s from Walmart? What about all those "bad guys with guns?" Should they be allowed to "get a gun?" Maybe I'm confused, but I thought the NRA was against giving literally everyone a gun.

*2) Education, parks and jobs don't kill people.* This part might take a while. Billy begins by telling us that the U.S. government has an education policy, a parks policy and a jobs policy, all of which are designed to increase access to these clearly beneficial things rather than to restrict access to them. See what he's getting at here? He continues by telling us that U.S. gun policy is all about restricting access, not increasing access in spite of the Second Amendment. So, in Billy's teeny-tiny hipster brain, guns are equivalent to education, parks and jobs. They're not. In any way.

He inexplicably admits with a sarcastic zinger that education doesn't harm anyone. "Perhaps we should think seriously about who we give access to knowledge. They could us it to do a lot of damage." Again, he's being sarcastic and doesn't really mean it. Which case, right! Education is harmless, unlike firearms, which are weapons used in tens of thousands of deaths every year. Show me one example in which a school has been used as a weapon to kill 10 out of every 100,000 Americans. The same goes for access to jobs or parks.

However, what Billy doesn't appear to grasp is that there are many laws -- useful ones -- that regulate education, labor and parks. Many National Parks charge admission. Other parks are closed during certain hours, or sections of the parks are restricted due to hazardous conditions. We also aren't allowed to run around a park and do whatever the hell we want. We can't vandalize the parks, we can't drive on certain terrain, we can't cut down trees or hunt animals without permission. As for labor, where do we begin? Labor regulations maintain a 40-hour work week; they prevent the exploitation of children; they prevent discrimination; they allow employers to not hire someone based on drug use or a criminal record. The list goes on and on. Something tells me Billy didn't fully think this through.

While we're here, it doesn't hurt to mention how the largely pro-gun right has been trying to restrict access to birth control, affordable college educations, reproductive healthcare and even voting.

*3) Read a newspaper, Billy.* I'm not sure where he's getting his news, but this is just wrong: "We don't have a U.S. gun policy. We have a U.S. anti-gun policy." Baffled? I am. "What if we were to design policy around the assumption that people need guns?" Seriously, what the hell is he talking about? Since the Sandy Hook massacre alone, far more pro-gun laws have been passed than anti-gun laws. Here are a few headlines that Billy clearly missed.

Michigan: Update on Pro-Gun Reforms in Lansing

Massachusetts: Senate Strips Gun Control Language From Gun Bill

Kentucky: Comprehensive Pro-Gun Reform Legislation Takes Effect Tomorrow

"Why Not One? Why Not Zero?" Gov. Christie Vetoes N.J. Magazine Ban

West Virginia: Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Expands to Nebraska

Missouri: Governor Signs Pro-Gun Bill, Another Awaits his Signature

Kansas: Two Pro-Gun Bills Take Effect Today

Idaho: Concealed Carry Expansion and Youth Hunting Laws Effective Today

Georgia: Comprehensive Pro-Gun Law Takes Effect Today

Virginia: New Pro-Gun/Pro-Hunting Laws Go Into Effect Tomorrow

Mississippi: Important NRA-Backed Laws Take Effect Tomorrow

Tennessee: Pro-Gun/Pro-Hunting Bills to Take Effect Tomorrow

Maryland: Multiple Pro-Hunting Bills to Take Effect Tomorrow

Indiana: Pro-Gun Legislation Takes Effect Tomorrow

Pennsylvania: Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Expands to Utah

These are all following the cold-blooded murder of two dozen children and teachers at Sandy Hook -- wait. Strike that. Correction. Sadly, these headlines are all from the last 25 days! And in case you're worried the articles might be sourced from the pesky liberal media, I gathered the headlines from the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action website. Not only is there no such thing as a sweeping "anti-gun policy" here, but Billy doesn't seem to be familiar with headlines that have appeared on one of his own affiliated websites.

Toss into the mix the brutal reality that even after the AR-15 was used in numerous mass shootings, most notably at Sandy Hook and Aurora, it continues to be the most popular firearm in the U.S., with gun groups and even sitting congressmen giving them away as coveted prizes. Not a single law has been passed to ban such weapons in spite of the ongoing mass shootings in which ARs were used; nor have pro-gun activists carrying loaded AR-15s at protests and in public places been routinely arrested simply for carrying one.

*4) "Guns make people's lives better."* Oh please. At the very most, guns might help someone who relies upon wild game to survive. And, when used by the police or the military, there's a conceivable benefit in terms of safety. But owning a gun doesn't inherently improve one's life. For most people, it's like buying an expensive retail product, then sticking that product in the closet. We might need it some day, but chances are we won't ever actually use it.

Billy continues by saying that U.S. gun policy should encourage people to buy guns and "even reward those people who use them." Yeah, that's a fantastic idea. We totally need to incentivize gun usage because it just doesn't happen often enough. "What if instead of gun-free zones, we had gun-required zones?" Like where?! I have an idea: why not make the neighborhood where Billy lives a "gun-required" zone. What could possibly go wrong?

Okay, enough of this. There are a couple more minutes left in the video, but it's getting to be unfairly easy to destroy it. Suffice to say, in the remaining moments, Billy suggests federally-subsidized firearms and "yearly allotments of free ammunition." His justification? We subsidize healthcare and education, so why not? Wait, does that mean the NRA supports government subsidies in these areas? Interesting. Maybe they're not all bad. Ah, what am I saying? Of course they're all bad.
