Deadly Silent

Virginia Tech. Tucson. Aurora. Navy Yard. Newtown. Albuquerque. Houston. Santa Barbara. The list goes on.

There was a time when mass shootings shook our nation to its core, and our elected leaders would find a way to address the unthinkable. They would struggle to get it right, but ultimately they would act.

It happened in 1934 with Roosevelt's "New Deal for Crime." It happened again 46 years ago when high profile assassinations resulted in the Gun Control Act of 1968. And it happened in 1993, despite the NRA's intense opposition, with the passage of the Brady Handgun Violence Program.
Today, the heavy hand of America's gun lobby has paralyzed Washington, and Congress appears anesthetized to these bloody rampages.

As a mom of three, a former prosecutor and new member of Congress, I'm not willing to accept this as our new status quo.

Nearly as many Americans die from gun violence as from breast cancer. More Americans die from bullets than leukemia, and since Newtown, more Americans have died from gun violence than U.S. military casualties in the war in Iraq.

War. Leukemia. Breast cancer. Those who lose a family member to one of these afflictions will endure an unspeakable pain, but many will also take solace in knowing their family member protected our country, inspired our communities to find a cure or create better policies. This is not the case for the families of victims of gun violence. For them, progress has been stalemated by the corrosive influence of special interests and the politics of cynicism. Today, the answer we hear from Washington when it comes to gun violence is that nothing can be done.

There is a way to end that cynicism. We have to remember and listen and act.

We should remember Boston's Ruth Rollins whose young son Warren was taken from her by the hands of a shooter. We should remember Christina Taylor Greene, a 9 year old girl shot and killed while meeting her political idol outside of a grocery store in Tucson. We should remember Hayida Pendleton, a 15 year old honor student shot and killed in Chicago a week after performing with her school band at President Obama's inauguration.

We should listen to the anguished plea for action by Richard Martinez whose son Christopher was killed in Santa Barbara. We should listen to Congresswoman Giffords, who in the midst of her recovery was able to muster the strength to admonish Congress, "Be Bold. Be Courageous. Americans are counting on you."

Congress should listen to the broad consensus of Americans who believe more can and must be done to end gun violence. I applaud the members of the Commonwealth's legislature for doing just that. Speaker DeLeo has poised the Massachusetts legislature to pass the most comprehensive gun laws in the country. But states cannot do this alone. Congress needs to act.

There are common sense proposals on the table that respect the rights of lawful gun owners while providing effective measures to improve gun safety and save lives. The public agrees that reasonable legislation, like closing the gun show loophole and expanding background checks, should become law. But instead of debate and discussion, these proposals are met with preternatural silence in the halls of the Capitol.

More than 30,000 Americans die from gunshot wounds every year, and each time Congress abdicates its responsibility to reduce this gruesome tally, we risk more violence. We risk forgetting that our nation is built and made stronger by tough decisions and weakened when we put the deep pockets of special interests ahead of our children and families.

In 1993, the NRA fought Congress with a $2 million war chest to prevent them from passing the Brady Bill. They fought, but America's perseverance and practicality won. Twenty years later, the NRA's political influence is once again at odds with public opinion. This time the war chest is ten times bigger and they're placing a bet that their money is louder than the voice of the American people.

In the six months I have served in Congress, the House has paused on several occasions to solemnly honor recent victims of shootings with a moment of silence. However, if we are to truly honor those we have lost to gun violence, it is time for Congress to end its silence. Reported by Huffington Post 3 hours ago.

Hillary Clinton Wants 'Automatic Weapons' Ban, Says Gun Owners 'Terrorize the Majority of People'

Hillary Clinton Wants 'Automatic Weapons' Ban, Says Gun Owners 'Terrorize the Majority of People' During a June 17 CNN townhall, Hillary Clinton said she wants to implement an assault weapons ban and "high capacity" magazine ban to keep people from entering school property "with an automatic weapon" to "murder innocent children, students, teachers."

In the video of the event, a Maryland school teacher asked Hillary if she thought banning "assault weapons" or "high capacity" magazines "would do any good." Hillary said, "Yes," then expounded:

First of all, I think as a teacher or really any parent, what's been happening with these school shootings should cause everybody to just think hard. We make hard choices and we balance competing values all the time. And I was disappointed that the Congress did not pass universal background checks after the horrors of the shootings at Sandy Hook, and now we've had more in the time since. And I don't think any parent--any person--should have to fear about their child going to school or going to college because someone, for whatever reason--psychological, emotional, political, [ideological], whatever it means--could possibly enter that school property with an automatic weapon and murder innocent children, students, teachers.

Clinton went on to say, "We cannot let a minority of people... hold a viewpoint that terrorizes the majority of people."

She concluded:

My view is, yes we need to thrash this out in the political realm. But the vast majority of Americans--even law-abiding gun owners--want background checks that work, information that is shared immediately, and an awareness that we're going to have to do a better job protecting the vast majority of our citizens--including our children--from that very, very small group that is unfortunately prone to violence, and now with automatic weapons, can wreak so much more violence.

Unfortunately for Hillary, this statement has yielded another gaffe for her book launch press blitz. No one is using "automatic weapons," which are already illegal, in school shootings. Secondly, Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV)--author of the Manchin-Toomey gun control bill that didn't pass--admitted that his bill would not have stopped the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary. And Breitbart News has reported that the bill would not have stopped the attacks at Santa Barbara, Troutdale Oregon, Fort Hood (April 2014), Arapahoe High School, LAX, Fort Hood (Nov. 2009), or the Aurora theater, among other crimes, either.

Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) held its ninth Gold Medal Competition on Saturday 14 June featuring 10 of the College’s finest performers and four of its aspiring young composers.

(PRWEB UK) 18 June 2014

This year’s winners were Russian postgraduate pianist Alexander Panfilov, aged 25 who studies with Graham Scott; Welsh postgraduate pianist Leanne Cody, aged 24 who studies with Peter Lawson; undergraduate percussionist Delia Stevens, aged 22 from Leicestershire, who studies with Simone Rebello, Liz Gilliver, Ian Wright, Dave Hassell and Paul Patrick; postgraduate soprano Lauren Fielder, aged 28 from Newark, Nottinghamshire, who studies with Mary Plazas; and Columbian postgraduate composer Sergio Cote, a 27-year-old pupil of Adam Gorb and Paul Patterson.

The annual competition, adapted this year from its usual weekend format to a full day event which, for the first time, offered composers the chance to compete by writing a new work for the Borealis Saxophone Quartet, took place at the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama while the RNCM’s £3 million Concert Hall refurbishment continues. It was adjudicated by Professor Linda Merrick (RNCM Principal), Dr Michelle Castelletti (RNCM Artistic Director), Jessica Duchen (classical music journalist for The Independent), Robert Saxton (composer), and Simon Webb (General Manager of the BBC Philharmonic).

Talking after the Competition, Professor Merrick said: ‘The RNCM’s much-coveted Gold Medal celebrates exceptional performance and composition by students at the College. Each year the competition between students is extremely high and 2014 was no exception. The adjudicating panel was faced with very difficult decisions on the day and while Alexander, Delia, Lauren, Leanne and Sergio were worthy winners, everyone who competed should be extremely proud of all they achieved on their journey to the final.’

The other 2014 competitors were: oboist Helen Clinton, saxophonist Michael Jackson, violist Kimi Makino, violinist Kana Ohashi, pianist Jeremy So, soprano Meinir Wyn Roberts, and composers Nelson Bohorquez, Richard Evans and Aled Smith.

Gun Giveaways Are This Cycle's Hottest Campaign Ploy

Clint Didier, a tea party-backed Republican and former Washington Redskins player, announced Thursday that he would be giving away three guns to raise his profile among a crowded field vying to succeed retiring Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.).

Didier, who has support from the National Republican Congressional Committee, is tapping into one of this cycle's hottest conservative campaign gimmicks with his contest.

Many of the Republicans who have raffled off guns seemed to relish the opportunity to tout their Second Amendment rights in the wake of shootings in Aurora, Colorado and in Newtown, Connecticut.

However, the email-grabbing tactic isn't terribly successful at the ballot box: neither state Sen. Lee Bright (R-S.C.) nor Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) won their respective Republican Senate primaries.

Below is a round-up of some of the current (and former) candidates using guns to attract new supporters. Reported by Huffington Post 4 hours ago.

Apollo Minerals and HPX identify IOCG drill targets at Commonwealth Hill

$
0
0
Apollo Minerals’ (ASX:AON) strategic partner, Robert Friedland’s High Power Exploration (HPX) has identified several large-scale, high priority iron-oxide-copper-gold drill targets at its Commonwealth Hill joint venture project in South Australia.

This resulted from using Typhoon IP surveys which unearthed high quality targets.

Drilling will commence shortly with the mobilisation of a drill rig to site for testing of priority initial targets.

Notably, the depth of targets appear to be as low as 200 metres below surface.

HPX had carried out the 140 square kilometre survey that identified the co-incident dense, chargeable targets, which may represent significant sulphide bodies.

These have the potential to host IOCG style mineralisation as seen at Prominent Hill and Carrapateena.

Significant drilling will be required to confirm this interpretation.

Separately, Apollo has received the raw data from its own IP surveys at the Mars Aurora Tank and Eaglehawk JV Properties where it is currently earning 75% project interests.

This data is currently being analysed and interpreted and results from this work and the recently completed RAB drilling at the same areas are expected to be announced shortly.

*Typhoon IP Survey*

The Typhoon IP survey was configured to quickly survey a large area to identify near-surface sulphide bodies with a minimum size of 400 metres wide or 1,000 metres in length.

This generated a number of IOCG targets as well as potential epithermal or sedimentary gold targets.

The large scale IOCG targets are associated with the Hiltaba age Wirrida Intrusive Complex and surrounds, including the Bundi North IOCG prospect.

HPX’s proprietary ‘Typhoon’ technology, which can penetrate to great depths with high accuracy, had previously being deployed in Australia, Africa and South America.

Its use in the Commonwealth Hill JV marks the first time the technology has been used in South Australia.
*
Commonwealth Hill JV*

HPX is providing up to $3.4 million of funding to earn an 80% interest in Apollo’s EL4960, EL5073, EL5074 and EL5348 licences in South Australia under the Commonwealth Hill JV.

Previous exploration by Apollo in the area has identified widespread copper anomalism directly above large, high density targets variously associated with magnetic and non-magnetic zones, which are interpreted to extend from a depth of approximately 150 metres to more than 1,000 metres below surface.

Bundi shares striking similarities to major IOCG deposits in the area including the Prominent Hill, and BHP's behemoth Olympic Dam deposit.

An independent review of the Bundi Prospect by geophysicist Chris Anderson, who was instrumental in the discovery of Carrapateena, has demonstrated potential for a large IOCG system.

*Analysis*

The identification of IOCG drill targets from High Power Exploration’s proprietary ‘Typhoon’ technology is a major step ahead for Apollo Mineral’s Commonwealth Hill joint venture with HPX.

The quality of the targets identified by a high powered Typhoon induced polarisation survey conducted by HPX will render the upcoming drill program very interesting indeed.

While early days, the number of co-incident dense, chargeable targets could represent significant sulphide bodies, and potential to host IOCG style mineralisation.

So it is game on for the Apollo / HPX partnership, who would not say no to finding another Prominent Hill or Carrapateena.

Were that the case, the current market cap of circa $9 million will look like chicken feed.

The agency also provides speakers for SCORE and supports multiple community causes including Make-a-Wish, the Comitis Crisis Center of Aurora, the B.I.G. Day and Coats for Colorado. Two team members have held or sought public office; another sits on the Board of Directors for the Englewood Library Association and is the Chair of the Englewood Cultural Arts Commission.

“Marketing agencies,” said Vachalek, “typically focus on trying to find the magic mix of lead generation tactics and offers that will allow them to achieve success. We help our clients define a vision and then live this across all experiences. This creates far greater success and is why, in 2014, we have sustained a 60 percent growth in revenues.”

Webolutions team members enjoy an on-site health center and racquetball court, regular company social events organized by its “Culture Club,” a company-sponsored All Team Breakfast each week and a 401(k) plan with employer matching. In April, 2014, the marketing agency celebrated the most successful month in its 20-year history with a “Get Fit” Celebration, as part of which each team member received a fitness tracking monitor. “Through support and friendly competition,” said Vachalek, “we are creating a healthier and happier team.”

ColoradoBiz Magazine’s 2014 Top Company Award winners will be announced August 28, 2014, at the Seawell Grand Ballroom at the Denver Center for Performing Arts.
