Over $57,000 was distributed to students with disabilities who demonstrated academic excellence, community involvement and perseverance. These scholars are attending colleges and universities across the country, including Purdue University, Indiana University, the University of Alabama, St. Louis University, North Central College, Valparaiso University and Hope College.

Wheaton, Illinois (PRWEB) June 09, 2014

This year, the Marianjoy Scholarship Program awarded more than $57,000 in scholarships to 23 young men and women with disabilities from the Chicagoland area pursuing post-high school education.

The amount of scholarship funding awarded — and the number of applications received — was the most in the history of the scholarship program, which celebrated its 20th anniversary on June 5. To date, the program has provided more than $750,000 to deserving students.

This year’s scholars, many of whom are current or former Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital patients, demonstrated academic excellence and are attending colleges and universities across the country, including Purdue University, Indiana University, the University of Alabama, St. Louis University, North Central College, Valparaiso University and Hope College, among others.

“This scholarship program is only possible through the generous contributions of our donors,” said Kathleen Yosko, Marianjoy President and CEO. “We’re proud that every dollar we receive for the program goes directly to these exceptional students and helps provide them with the resources they need to succeed.”

For nearly 40 years, Marianjoy has remained an advocate for individuals living with a disability. Though pursuing a college degree is not easy for anyone, doing so while living with a physical disability requires an even greater degree of determination, stamina and focus which is why the Marianjoy Scholarship Fund was established. This year’s recipients include young men and women studying architecture, literature, medicine, computer science, broadcasting and teaching.

Recipients this year include:
William Belles of Yorkville
Lauren Bryant of Wheaton
Ryan Dabrowski of Orland Park
Theresa Eberhardt of Yorkville
Jessica Ebersole of Oak Park
Steven Fako of Orland Park
Daniel Freeman of Wheaton
Tori Hamiel of LaSalle

8 twisters hit Colorado: Minor injury, damage

(AP) — Several tornadoes touched down as a line of severe thunderstorms swept through Colorado on Sunday, with one of the twisters hitting near a junior golf tournament and injuring a caddy. Aurora Fire Department officials said a twister touched down near the Blackstone Country Club, causing one minor injury and flipping an empty trailer. Paul Cleveland, 16, who was playing in the golf tournament, said he and two other people were riding in a golf cart when they saw a funnel cloud heading in their direction, swirling debris. The weather is expected to be quieter in Colorado Monday but thunderstorms could produce large hail, isolated tornadoes and heavy rain, which could lead to flash flooding in southern Nebraska, Kansas, northeast Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky and northwest Tennessee. Side Effects, in Spanish: the Books of Almudena Solana

$

I am a huge fan of the Spanish writer Almudena Solana. Great news for me: I am finally meeting her this week after years of reading and re-reading her books (we became acquainted through emails back and forth). Bad news? Only one of her novels - the marvelous The Curriculum Vitae of Aurora Ortiz - has been translated into English. I reviewed her novel Las Mujeres Inglesas Destrozan Los Tacones Al Andar (English Women Destroy Their Heels By Walking) in 2011 in the hopes it might be translated; now I am trying again with her latest novel, Efectos Secundarios (Side Effects). I've attempted a review in Spanish and follow with the English version.

Now in English:

The latest novel by Almudena Solana is a marvel of imagination and humanity. In Side Effects the Spanish novelist uses ten medicinal qualities to explore the inner depths of her characters, naming them after commonly prescribed drugs. For example, a woman named Adiro (a kind of aspirin) can understand when someone is lying; Nolotil (a pain reliever) is a physician who has to learn to say "no": Augmentin (an antibiotic) is full of nostalgia for childhood; Voltaren (an anti-inflammatory) is full of himself; Paracetamol (pain reliever) is an old man who can not remember anything; and Ventolin (a bronchodilator) is a young saxophonist.

Even without proper names, all the characters are very real and each demands our attention and affection. At first I did not understand how the stories of the different characters intersect but gradually everything came together to form a beautiful story about loneliness, family, friendship, love, sex, pain and comfort. How do you spell relief? Through human contact.

There are many methods (and some may say drugs) to get through the difficulties of life - but in the end, is the relationship between one person and another that gives the characters the strength they need.

I also appear in the book, in the side mention of a woman reading a book a day for a year to deal with a terrible sadness. It was during this very real year of book therapy that I first read Almudena Solana, when one day in the library I chose The Curriculum Vitae of Aurora Ortiz. I felt the human touch in Solana's words - and I felt better. No paracetamol for me: just books and more books. Thanks, Almudena, for better pain relief - the connections between humans, empathy from one person to another. Reported by Huffington Post 36 minutes ago.

The Newly Crowned Miss USA Used To Work As A Disney Princess

Nia Sanchez, Miss Nevada USA, beat out 50 other beauty queens Sunday night to be crowned Miss USA 2014 — but she's no stranger to wearing a crown.

The 24-year-old has worked as a variety of face characters at Hong Kong Disney, including Cinderella, Princess Aurora, Belle, and Snow White, among others.

Sanchez frequently posts photos in her Disney costumes to her over 26,000 Instagram followers.

Sometimes, her worlds collided.

Eventually, the beauty queen left Disney to focus full time on pageants. She later posted: "Sometimes you don't appreciate something as much as you should until it's gone. Being a part of these moments was the best."

Just last month she posted: "mood: #Disney #iWannaGoPlay !! #missingTheMagic"

Thankfully, Sanchez can still visit Disneyland for fun.

But the princess also knows how to act tough, holding a fourth-degree black belt in Taekwondo.

"I started training when I was 8, and I started teaching when I was 12, and I was a certified instructor when I was 15," Sanchez has said. "It's a good workout. It's a full body workout. I never get more tired working out than when I'm at the studio."

Reid Calls for More Gun Control Before Facts in on Las Vegas Attack

Reid Calls for More Gun Control Before Facts in on Las Vegas Attack On June 9, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said the Senate needs to pass expanded background checks in light of the June 8 Las Vegas shooting, although the facts are still out on how or when the attackers acquired their guns.

Expanded background checks failed to pass in April 2013.

According to Politico, Reid has now gone from promising to bring the bill back up "when it has the votes to pass" to "strongly advocating that the Senate revisit the background checks legislation" now.

"We in Congress, we need to put in place legislation that helps prevent these deranged, these weird, these savage people who carry out such savage acts of violence," Reid said. "Background checks so that people who are criminals, who are deranged can't buy a gun." He did not say anything about the more sensible solution of getting deranged, weird, and savage people off our streets.

Breitbart News has reported the U.S. has had background checks in place since 1993. Breitbart News also reported that Nidal Hasan (Fort Hood, November 2009), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School gunman), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard gunman), Paul Anthony Ciancia (LAX gunman), James Holmes (Aurora theater gunman), and Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood, April 2014) all passed background checks.

Background checks in no way prevented these individuals from committing crimes.

Moreover, when Reid called for expanded background checks after the April Fort Hood attack, Breitbart News pointed out that the expanded background checks are really just the same background checks the United States has now, applied to every sale instead of just retail sales. The structure and mechanism for any other type of checks doesn't even exist.

But that does not matter, because Democrats know that if they can pass expanded background checks it will finally open the door to a federal gun registry, which has to be in place to make expanded background checks enforceable. The registry is the real goal.

Earth's Magnetosphere Doesn't Stop All Solar Wind From Breaking Through

*Brett Smith for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online*

Using data from four European Space Agency satellites that fly in formation in the Earth's magnetic field, researchers have uncovered new information on how the solar wind can break through the Earth’s magnetosphere and disrupt modern life.

According to a new report in the journal Physical Review Letters, when the solar wind meets the environment around the Earth – an electromagnetic phenomenon called an asymmetric magnetic reconnection takes place.

Magnetic reconnections can give energy to activity on the solar surface and can change the energy from the incoming solar wind so that it creates what we see in an aurora. These reconnections are also a major stumbling block when it comes to storing energy through processes in fusion reactors.

If two colliding fields of plasma have the same density, temperature and strength, but distinct orientations of their magnetic fields, symmetrical reconnection commences. In more usual instances, two plasma fields have distinct characteristics, for instance when the solar wind reaches the Earth.

The study team used data from the ESA’s Cluster satellites to try and understand this scenario.

"Especially important were measurments with two satellites only a few tens of kilometres from each other, in the region where the solar wind meets the Earth's magnetic field," said study author Daniel Graham, from the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF). "We can thus do detailed measurements to understand plasma physics at a height of 60,000 km."

The researchers said they are particularly interested in the heating of electrons parallel to the magnetic field in conjunction with magnetic reconnection.

"We believe that this is an important piece of the puzzle for understanding how magnetic reconnection works, how charged particles are accelerated, and how particles from different regions can be mixed with each other," Graham said. "Our detailed measurements in the Earth's magnetic field can be used to understand the physics even in fusion reactors on Earth, and in far distant regions in space that we can't reach with satellites."

A study published last month found the solar wind can be highly influential when it comes to electrical storms here on Earth.

Published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, that study revealed a considerable raise in lightning rates throughout Europe in the 40 days following the arrival of high-speed solar winds, which can move at over a million miles per hour from the Sun.

“Our main result is that we have found evidence that high-speed solar wind streams can increase lightning rates. This may be an actual increase in lightning or an increase in the magnitude of lightning, lifting it above the detection threshold of measurement instruments,” said study author Chris Scott, a space and atmospheric physics professor at the University of Reading.

He added that cosmic radiation, as well as particles created by our own Sun, affects lightning activity.

“We propose that these particles, while not having sufficient energies to reach the ground and be detected there, nevertheless electrify the atmosphere as they collide with it, altering the electrical properties of the air and thus influencing the rate or intensity at which lightning occurs,” Scott said.
