Aurora, CO (PRWEB) May 02, 2014

The ABC Television Network, which will air 13 two-hour episodes of the hit series “Extreme Weight Loss,” a unique, non-competitive show about weight loss transformations, has announced the series’ participants for season four, premiering Tuesday, May 27 (8:00-10:00 p.m., ET/PT) on ABC. Unlike previous seasons, the first three months of the participants’ journey were spent at University of Colorado’s Anschutz Health and Wellness Center (AHWC).

The Center offers some of the country’s most advanced research and science-based expertise, focusing on a comprehensive wellness approach including weight loss and management, fitness and nutrition.

Holly Wyatt, MD, medical director at AHWC and on the show, is a guiding force in helping “Extreme Weight Loss” participants safely lose up to half their body weight. Wyatt has extensive clinical experience using behavioral treatment, diet and exercise to help people lose weight. She also has received awards from the National Institutes of Health to study energy metabolism and metabolic factors associated with weight loss.

Wyatt works alongside transformation specialist and trainer Chris Powell on the participants’ 365-day transformation journey. Life for these 17 “super obese” people has become unmanageable because of their weight. The transformation is about more than their bodies; it is about who they are as individuals.

“Taking this journey as their doctor, cheerleader and biggest fan is one of the most memorable and meaningful aspects of my career,” said Wyatt, the medical director for “Extreme Weight Loss.” “I also struggled with weight in my teens and twenties so I can empathize with the physical and emotional challenges they face.”

Here are the 17 participants whose one-year weight loss journey will be documented:·     Charita & Ty (Colorado Springs, CO; Oklahoma City, OK) – Charita/310 lbs., a mother of three who wants to be able to dance again, and Ty/480 lbs., a baseball prospect who could get a professional contract if he can get under 300 lbs. (This will be the first time in the show’s history that the participants go head-to-head, with only one in this episode making it to the final weigh-in.)
·     Jeff & Juliana (Denver, CO) – Father/423 lbs. and his 15-year-old daughter/265 lbs., who have a strained relationship.
·     Kathie & Josh (Charlotte, NC) – Single mother/255 lbs. and her 21-year-old son/345 lbs., who lives at home.
·     Bruce (Salt Lake City, UT) – Football coach/382 lbs., who wants to confront his imprisoned father, a convicted child molester, for what happened to him during his childhood.
·     Jayce (Nashville, TN) – Country songwriter/417 lbs., who wants to become a performer.
·     Melissa (Shadyside, OH) – Widow/301 lbs. who was married to an Afghanistan war veteran until he committed suicide as a result of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).
·     David (St. Louis, MO) – Gourmet chef/413 lbs. who can’t overcome the guilt he feels about his brother & sister’s deaths.
·     Brandi (Atlanta, GA) – Former Pageant Queen/329 lbs. who wants to be pretty again.
·     Georgeanna (Tulsa, OK) – Pastor’s wife/315 lbs. who is a former gymnast & cheerleader, but stopped pursuing both to become a mom.
·     Sara (Owensboro, KY) – The first “little person”/245 lbs. ever on the show.
·     Cassie (Milwaukee, WI) – Mother/347 lbs. who wants to get healthy to meet the son she gave up for adoption 18 years ago.
·     Rod (Tallahassee, FL) – Drama teacher/448 lbs., who wants to come out as being gay and then pursue his dream of becoming an actor.
·     Christy & Kenny (Las Vegas, NV; Oklahoma City, OK) – Christy/380 lbs., who tried to commit suicide after experiencing teenage bullying, and Kenny/410 lbs., a former Marine who wants to make his kids proud. (Their head-to-head episode is not to be missed; only one of them will make it to the final weigh-in, while the other is the first participant ever to be kicked off the show for bad behavior.)

The first three months of the upcoming season took place at University of Colorado’s Anschutz Health and Wellness Center as did the nine month weigh-ins.

“It was incredible. In just one year with Holly and her team, we learned so many new things about weight loss, scientifically - as well as psychologically and emotionally,” said Matt Assmus, executive producer of “Extreme Weight Loss.”

“The most amazing thing is that even though Holly’s team consists of the foremost obesity experts in the world, they wanted to learn from OUR experience. It’s that desire to keep learning that will help Holly and her team lead the field of health and wellness,” said Assmus.

Added JD Roth, executive producer of “Extreme Weight Loss” and CEO of the show’s production company Eyeworks USA, “Season four of “Extreme Weight Loss” highlights a new and evolved approach to our process, which we owe largely to the commitment and expertise of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. We’re so gratified to have partnered with this driving, innovative institution, and look forward to growing that relationship over the life of the EWL franchise.”

Extreme Weight Loss is produced for ABC by Eyeworks USA. The series is executive-produced by JD Roth, Todd A. Nelson, Matt Assmus and Brant Pinvidic.

Grant from Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley Helps Patients with Low Vision See New Possibilities at Marianjoy

A grant from the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley has provided Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital with funds to support new assistive technology that enhances treatment options for patients with vision deficits.

WHEATON, Illinois (PRWEB) May 02, 2014

Therapists at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital have a new and sophisticated way to treat patients with vision deficits.

A Dynavision D2 Visuomotor Training System, purchased through a $20,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, is helping care providers better evaluate and treat patients with low vision—a vision loss not easily corrected by eyeglasses, medication or surgery.

“We are very appreciative of the Community Foundation of Fox River Valley for its generosity in providing this grant,” said Kathleen Yosko, Marianjoy President and CEO. “This new technology is already beginning to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities, while providing opportunities to maximize their abilities to reach their personal and employment goals.”

The device, about the size of a big-screen TV, allows therapists to program customizable exercises that direct patients’ vision to different buttons on the device. Patients with low vision who benefit from the Dynavision System are most often patients rehabilitating from stokes, traumatic brain injuries or other neurological disorders.

Occupational therapist Jenna Verdicchio has found the new technology to be an excellent supplement to traditional therapeutic methods for patients with low vision.

“There are so many uses,” said Verdicchio. “Balance, mobility, vision, coordination, strength—all those things are able to be addressed with the Dynavision equipment.” Her patient, Ken Fisher, has also found the high-tech equipment—originally developed as a training device for professional athletes—to be an excellent tool.

“It’s like Disneyland,” said Fisher. “I want one in my living room.” Fisher added that the equipment has helped him improve his peripheral vision and reaction time.

Among the many uses for Dynavision, Verdicchio said the most obvious has been its benefits within the Driver Rehabilitation program.

“Drivers’ rehab is going to be using this immensely for reaction time and also to work on attending to two different stimuli at the same time,” Verdicchio said.

Is It Time to Update the Second Amendment?

0
0
As Winston Churchill famously said, "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing -- after they have tried everything else." It was a backhanded compliment about our ability to find the courage to do what is necessary, and time and again, Americans have risen to the challenge.

Except on gun control.

It should dismay us greatly that even after the Newtown tragedy, which claimed the lives of 20 young children, and the countless gun related deaths since -- including this week when a gunman went on a rampage at a FedEx facility in Georgia, we have been unable to enact stronger laws to prevent the reckless marketing and sales of guns by manufacturers and dealers. Even basic measures such as expanded background checks and restrictions on the sale of assault weapons have failed in Congress, and we seem to be no closer to making progress on this issue than before Newtown.

When even the massacre of children doesn't move us, it is time to ask why we have become so ineffectual and unable to do the right thing. A big part of the answer lies in our blind adherence to the Constitution, and more specifically, the Second Amendment, which codifies the right to bear arms. Even gun control advocates who recognize the urgent need to do something are so scared of appearing un-American that they routinely sidestep the core issue of whether the Second Amendment makes sense anymore and even wind up bolstering the other side's cause in some cases.

This, of course, is exactly what gun companies and the National Rifle Association count on to continue their policy of bullying America into submission on guns. As long as we are afraid to question the sacred cow of the pro-gun movement, there cannot be meaningful progress on gun control.

So does the Second Amendment really serve a useful purpose in modern society and should it be modified to suit our times?

The answer to the former depends on whether you imagine that the Second Amendment somehow protects Americans from a tyrannical government. It does not. No matter how many weapons private citizens stockpile or even what type of guns they own, a private militia can never match the firepower of the U.S. government. Simply put, if our government ever decides to suppress the citizenry by force, privately held guns won't be the factor that makes a difference.

With this in mind, the central purpose that the Second Amendment once served is no longer applicable, and therefore neither is the Amendment in its current form. Even gun control advocates are not opposed to private citizens keeping a handgun at home for personal protection or hunters owning a rifle, but those exceptions can be covered without the overarching sweep of the Second Amendment.

Also, as much as the pro-gun movement would like you to believe, there is no real evidence that more guns in the hands of private citizens protects society from violence. The popular idea (amongst some people) that if every person was armed, criminals could be neutralized more easily or be less likely to commit crimes in the first place is absurd and more the result of an effective media campaign by the NRA than a real fact. The presence of more guns in society simply raises the danger of more people being hurt and we don't need statistics to recognize that.

Ironically, the problem with the Second Amendment is that by being so broad, it actually makes it vulnerable to interpretation and sets up the conflict between the right to bear arms (reasonable) and the ability to pose a serious threat to civilized society (unreasonable). Limiting its scope, therefore, could strengthen the spirit of the Amendment by removing its undesirable consequences.

Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens recently suggested adding the words "when serving in [the militia]" to update the Second Amendment but that won't necessarily work either since the definition of 'militia' itself is debatable. It's time to stop quibbling over words and make the Amendment as specific as possible to avoid subjective interpretations leading to deadly consequences for our nation.

To summarize, if we want meaningful gun control in America, we first need to remove the all-encompassing shield of the Second Amendment that the multi-billion dollar gun industry and its lobbyists routinely hide behind to ply their weapons. Only without that artificial protection can we begin to have a real debate about the type of gun laws we need.

I know that many will bristle at the notion of modifying our Constitution but as an evolved nation with civilization and peace as our guiding principles, we are actually obligated to rethink anything that derails those principles - no matter how appropriate the Second Amendment may have been when it was adopted in 1791. If the essence of America is freedom, then we also need to be free of blind ideology, needless paranoia, and the fear of questioning our Constitution - which was written by free-thinking Americans who had no problem questioning their own status quo.

One such free-thinking American today is former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a long-time advocate of gun control, who recently pledged $50 million of his personal capital to take on the destructive influence of the NRA. Predictably, the NRA is trying to use that to make Americans afraid of what could happen to their guns, but let's not be fooled by them.

Support Mr. Bloomberg on his mission instead.

Gallaudet University Partners with U.S. Office of Personnel Management to Expand Career Opportunities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Federal Employees

Partnership also supports Gallaudet Masters of Public Administration students in accessing Federal employment.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 03, 2014

Gallaudet University today announced it has established a collaborative agreement with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to promote educational skill development and career advancement opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing Federal employees enrolled in the university’s Masters of Public Administration (MPA) program.

The MPA program, established in 2012, is designed for deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing professionals who work in local, state, or Federal government agencies, non-profit human service organizations, and non-profit professional associations. The Gallaudet-OPM partnership supports deaf and hard of hearing Federal employees’ career advancement opportunities by providing valuable education and skills in a bilingual and fully accessible learning environment.

“The unique experiences, education, and training provided through Gallaudet’s MPA program are second to none,” said Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz. “The Federal government’s leadership on employment of people with disabilities makes them a perfect partner for this initiative. This partnership will be a model to the nation and to employers throughout the country. These kinds of collaborations will move the needle on unemployment and underemployment for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.”

In 2010, President Barack Obama signed Executive Order 13548 (Increasing Federal Employment of Individuals with Disabilities) which set a goal of hiring 100,000 individuals with disabilities into Federal service over five years. Along with fostering advancement opportunities, this collaboration will support deaf and hard of hearing students in accessing Federal career and internship opportunities.

“Our latest report on the employment of people with disabilities has some very exciting news,” said OPM Director Katherine Archuleta. “At no time in the past 32 years has the Federal government hired people with disabilities at a higher rate than in fiscal year 2012. And there are more deaf and hard of hearing employees in the Federal government now than at any time in the past 19 years. Our agreement with Gallaudet will help the Federal government build on these successes.”

“Gallaudet’s MPA program prepares students to lead with a sense of direction, to focus on results, to develop others' capability to perform, and to serve with integrity,” said Dr. Francis Duffy, MPA program director.

Gallaudet’s MPA program is a 40-credit graduate degree program administered by the Department of Government and Public Affairs. It is intended for professionals with at least one year of paid employment in a public sector or non-profit organization who can communicate through ASL or who are willing to learn ASL prior to graduation. For more information or to apply, go to: http://www.gallaudet.edu/gpa/master_of_public_administration.html.

The Denver Foundation's Giving Circles & Affinity Groups: Maximizing Impact

Shared Vision + Shared Giving = More Impact

Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) May 05, 2014

The Denver Foundation, as a Community foundation with connections to both the funding and the nonprofit communities, is in a natural position to be a host for giving circles of all types. The Denver Foundation is proud to play a key role in several giving circles in the Denver community. In 2013, The Denver Foundation brought together a group of passionate and knowledgeable arts funders to create the Arts Affinity Group (AAG) as a collective giving platform. The purpose of the group was to bring expanded opportunities for those who partner with the Foundation to leverage their funding, learn from one another, and promote arts in our community.

In addition to the Arts Affinity Group, the Foundation is host to the Denver African American Philanthropists (DAAP), the first African American male giving circle in Colorado. DAAP has emerged as a force for giving and has also been recognized for its important role as a community leadership organization. The group was recently voted “Best Giving Circle in the United States” by Black Celebrity Giving and profiled in JET magazine.

Both formal giving circles and affinity groups, as well as the more informal groups that collectively hold funds at the Foundation but manage their own process outside of the Foundation, lead to greater engagement and connection among the donors and the causes they care about. This increased connection translates into greater giving.

In February, AAG voted to approve their first round of grants, providing support to six leading arts learning organizations based on criteria that focused on innovation, technology, and access for
disadvantaged populations. The groups approved for funding by the AAG this year are:· Buntport Theater for a civil rights oriented theatrical and digital storytelling program in conjunction with East High School;
· Youth on Record, formerly Flobots.org, for their work providing in-school and out-of-school training and classes for high-risk youth in the area of technical music development; and
· Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA), for a summer program focused on “artbots” reengaging youth in the creation of technology-oriented arts programming.

Smaller grants were also awarded to Oh Heck Yeah, El Sistema, and Redline.

While the impact of the specific grants awarded by the AAG this year may not be known for some time, the enthusiasm and engagement are notable accomplishments of the collective learning / giving model. Beyond that, national models have shown that deeper and more lasting impacts result from this type of group philanthropic practice. According to the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers in a 2009 report entitled “The Impact of Giving Together,” people “give more, give more strategically, and are more knowledgeable about nonprofit organizations and problems in their communities when they participate in giving circles.”

The success of the Arts Affinity Group has inspired the Foundation to expand its offerings with the launch of an environment-focused affinity group.

For more information on the Arts Affinity Group or the environment focused affinity group, contact Kelly Purdy, kpurdy(at)denverfoundation.org.
