Mayor Who 'Kind Of Agreed' With Alleged Jewish Center Gunman Resigns

Marionville, Mo. Mayor Dan Clevenger resigned from his post Monday after coming under fire for ties to the gunman accused of killing three people outside an Overland Park, Kan. Jewish center last week.

The Springfield News-Leader reported that Clevenger's decision came after a town hall meeting where residents and local aldermen called for his impeachment. Clevenger faced backlash after telling KSPR-TV last week that he "kind of agreed" with some of alleged shooter Frazier Glenn Cross' beliefs.

"He was always nice and friendly and respectful of elder people, you know, he respected his elders greatly," Clevenger told KSPR-TV of Miller, who also went by the name Frazier Glenn Miller. "As long as they were the same color as him," Clevenger said.

As the AP noted last week, the 73-year-old Miller holds white-supremacist beliefs, and ran for federal office twice on anti-Semitic platforms. The News-Leader added that after the meeting, Clevenger expressed regrets about writing a letter a decade ago in support of Miller's "warnings."

More on that letter, via KSPR-TV's report from last Tuesday:
"I am a friend of Frazier Miller helping to spread his warnings," wrote Clevenger. "The Jew-run medical industry has succeeded in destroying the United State's workforce."

The letter continued.

"Made a few Jews rich by killin' us off."

He also spoke of the "Jew-run government backed banking industry turned the U.S into the world's largest debtor nation."

After the meeting, Clevenger told the News-Leader he regrets writing an anti-Semitic letter to the editor to the Aurora Advertiser about 10 years ago. He said he was heavily influenced by Miller at the time.

Krypton-Dating Breakthrough Will Unlock Secrets Of Ancient Earth

Krypton-Dating Breakthrough Will Unlock Secrets Of Ancient Earth When scientists peer into ancient Earth's climate, technological limitations make it difficult to see back more than about 800,000 years. But a game-changing technology 40 years in the making might allow them to almost double that view, pushing the limit to about 1.5 million years.

That technology is able to separate and count a particular type of Krypton atom, a vital element used to date ancient ice.  A new study in Antarctica has finally applied this technology in the field, giving scientists hope that Earth's ancient past isn't so far away. Seeing that far back could help explain one of the most mysterious transitions in Earth's history.

Ice-age cycles run on a 100,000-year clock and have done so for almost a million years. Every 100,000 years, a short warm period arises between longer cold spells, said Edward Brook, a researcher at Oregon State University.

The limited evidence we have about the Earth before that period curiously suggests that our planet was on a shortened, 40,000-year cycle. Scientists hope the groundbreaking new dating method could reveal why the climate cycle changed so abruptly, and whether greenhouses gasses were at play.

"Some people believe a change in the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide may have played a role," said Christo Buizert of Oregon State University in a statement. Carbon dioxide is one of the major players in global climate change today.

"That is one reason we are so anxious to find ice that will take us back further in time," he said.

*Not Just For Superman*

The new dating method, published April 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, relies on the element krypton.

Yes, krypton is a real element. It enters our atmosphere via cosmic rays. Because it does not mingle with other elements, it becomes blown around in the atmosphere. When snow gets buried and compacted, it traps little bubbles of our atmosphere. The snow turns to ice and krypton gets trapped.

Like many elements, krypton comes in several varieties. One, called Kr-81, falls apart at a steady rate, turning into Bromine-81, which is stable and does not decay. In 230,000 years, half of Kr-81 will transform into Br-81.

By counting the ratio of Kr-81 to its daughter element, Br-81, in a sample, the scientists can calculate how old the sample is.

This "radiokrypton dating" is similar to radiocarbon dating — a well-established method for determining age. Because carbon decays much quicker than krypton, the former can be used to look back only about 40,000 years, Brook said.

Scientists have had their eye on krypton dating for 40 years, but technological limitations have kept it out of reach. The element is not very abundant in our atmosphere, making it difficult to sample.

In 2011, a new technology called the Atom Trap Trace Analysis was developed. It is so sensitive that it is capable of accurately *counting individual krypton atoms.*

*Why Now?*

In 2011, researchers were able to use the Trap to date 120,000-year-old Antarctic krypton. To get it, 660 pounds of ice was melted to release the ancient gas trapped inside its bubbles. The krypton atoms in the bubbles were separated from the air and then sent to the Atom Trap, a product from Argonne Laboratory.

The Trap captures krypton atoms by using laser beams. The beams also make the atoms fluoresce, which a sensitive CCD camera is able to count.

Despite the technological advancements, 1.5 million years of climatic history won't be easy to procure.

"There isn't a lot of krypton in the air, and thus there isn't much in the ice, either. That's why we need such large samples to melt down," said Buizert.

One core is about 88 pounds, said Brook. They need a lot of ice to get enough krypton atoms to sample, hence the 660 pounds of ice.

While the process is not difficult, the team does rely on a specialty drill and a team of engineers to get the job done, said Brook. The team hopes to reduce the amount of ice needed to 44 pounds in the near future.

For now, the hunt is on for old ice, which the team thinks it could find at the base of ice sheets or at the edges of ice fields, said the release.

Obama Pledges Solidarity With Mudslide Survivors: 'We're Going To Be Strong Right Alongside You'

$

OSO, Wash. (AP) — Swooping over a landscape of unspeakable sadness and death, President Barack Obama took an aerial tour Tuesday of the place where more than three dozen people perished in a mudslide last month. He pledged a nation's solidarity with those who are enduring "unimaginable pain and difficulty" in the aftermath of the destruction.

"We're going to be strong right alongside you," Obama promised the people whose lives were upended when a wall of mud and water swept away the hillside on March 22 and took with it at least 41 lives and dozens of homes. Obama first boarded a helicopter to survey the awful scene.

Evidence of the mudslide's power was everywhere: trees ripped from the ground, a highway paved with mud and debris, a river's course altered. And in the midst of the awful tableau, an American flag flying at half-staff.

Even as the president flew overhead, the search for bodies continued below. Two people were still listed as missing.

Back on the ground, the president gathered at a community chapel in the small town of Oso, about an hour northeast of Seattle, to mourn with families of the victims. He met separately with emergency responders before speaking in a small brick firehouse about all he had seen and heard on a clear, sunny afternoon.

"The families that I met with showed incredible strength and grace through unimaginable pain and difficulty," Obama said. Then he offered them a promise.

"The whole country's thinking about you, and we're going to make sure that we're there every step of the way as we go through the grieving, the mourning, the recovery," he said.

Obama said few Americans had heard of the tightknit community of Oso before the tragedy but in the past month "we've all been inspired by the incredible way that the community has come together."

Firefighter coats hung on the firehouse walls as Obama spoke, with homemade signs above them reading: "We (Heart) Oso." ''Thank you Oso." ''Oso Proud."

Brande Taylor, whose boyfriend volunteered to work on the mudslide debris field, was glad the president made the effort to visit this rural outpost.

"It is a small community. It's little. It's not huge on the map. But there's still people here who need help, that need the support," said Taylor, who stood near the firehouse. "And they need to know the president is here to support and to help them rebuild their lives."

Kellie Perkins, who lives in Oso, said Obama's visit would help families who have lost so much begin to heal.

"They don't now have houses any more, they don't have anything they own, their friends or relatives are dead," she said. "I think they need this."

At the request of Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, Obama earlier this month declared that a major disaster had occurred in the state, making it and affected residents eligible for various forms of financial aid, including help covering the costs of temporary housing, home repairs and the loss of uninsured property. The Homeland Security Department, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers also are helping.

The president repeatedly has stepped into the role of national consoler in times of mourning. Just two weeks ago, he met with families and comrades of those killed in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Texas. Three soldiers died and 16 others were wounded in the rampage by another soldier, who killed himself.

Obama also has mourned with the grieving after carnage in Tucson, Ariz., Aurora, Colo., Newtown, Conn., Boston, the Washington Navy Yard — and once before at Fort Hood.

Tuesday's stop in Washington came as Obama headed for Tokyo, the first stop on a four-country visit to the Asia-Pacific region. The president is scheduled to spend the rest of this week and part of next week conferring with the leaders of Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines.

PEARL Releases Revision 6 of Electrical Equipment Reconditioning Standards

New standards detail technician qualifications, clarify importance of manufacturer specifications, and expand use of industry standard terminology.

Aurora, Colorado (PRWEB) April 28, 2014

The Professional Electrical Apparatus Recyclers League (PEARL) today announced the release of revision 6 of the association’s Reconditioning Standards for the most common types of industrial and commercial electrical equipment, including circuit breakers, transformers, motor controls, and switchgear, among other equipment categories. Highlighted changes from revision 6 of PEARL’s Reconditioning Standards include additional detail regarding suggested technician qualifications and the importance of manufacturer specifications for equipment performance, as well as expanded use of electrical industry terminology used by other electrical industry organizations, including IEEE and NETA.

PEARL Reconditioning Standards provide inspection, cleaning, reconditioning, testing, and documentation instructions that, when followed by trained technicians, will return electrical devices to "as good as new" condition without compromise. Electrical devices that meet PEARL Reconditioning Standards are then ready for installation and service, and will benefit from extended service life and reliability. The standards are organized by type of equipment or apparatus.

“The inclusion of technician expertise is particularly relevant as PEARL prepares to present the electrical industry’s first Technician Certification program to its membership during our annual meeting next month in Phoenix, Ariz.,” explains Stephen Reames, president of PEARL and Oregon Breakers, Inc. (Portland, Ore.), and co-chairman of PEARL’s Technical Committee. “Additional changes covered in revision 6 of the PEARL Reconditioning Standards also should make it easier to build a consensus standard as we work toward ANSI acceptance.”

Founded in 1997, PEARL is a trade association serving the industrial and commercial electrical industries that creates, collects, and disseminates technical information, policies, procedures, and standards to ensure the proper reconditioning and life extension of electrical power equipment. PEARL-reconditioned electrical goods are held to a higher testing standard than new electrical apparatus because each device is tested individually rather than batch-tested. PEARL reconditioned apparatus also spare the planet from thousands of tons of unnecessary waste each year, and reduce U.S. energy consumption and the country’s carbon footprint by returning quality electrical equipment to safe use, saving companies millions of dollars in avoided downtime and expense each year compared to the costs of replacing existing electrical service with all new products. PEARL’s Reconditioning Standards are available to non-members at a minimal cost of $375 for bound copies and $150 for electronic documents. PEARL members are able to purchase the standards at a significant discount; volume pricing is also available. For more information or to order copies, visit PEARL at http://www.pearl1.org, email pearl(at)pearl1(dot)org, or call 877-287-3275.

The 100 Best Brunch Spots In The US Anthony Bourdain may have slammed brunch in his tell-all "Kitchen Confidential," but the leisurely weekend meal is starting to hit a good stride in its evolution, according to OpenTable's chief dining officer Caroline Potter.

"It's appealing to diners because they don't have to dress to the nines if they don't feel like it. And it's an excuse to have a cocktail at noon on a Sunday," she told Business Insider.

In a newly released list of the best brunch spots in the U.S., OpenTable found restaurants that are taking the meal seriously. They offer a wide variety of specially prepared brunch entrees (not just the week's leftovers) that complement the standard eggs Benedict.

Potter was especially happy to see Washington D.C. crop up several times on the list of cool places to grab brunch. In a relatively small area, D.C. had eight entries, double its amount last year, and putting it on par with New York City.

OpenTable picked the best restaurants for brunch based on more than five million restaurant reviews submitted by the restaurant reservation site's diners for more than 15,000 restaurants in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Courses have resulted in 100% of attendees passing the certification exam. Clinics see the need and future in Workers’ Comp Rehab. Next training dates announced.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 29, 2014

The International Sports Professionals Association™ (ISPA) and Heartland Rehabilitation Services (HRS) held the second online training course for Rehabilitation Professionals in Workers’ Compensation on January 28, 2014 and ran for three consecutive weeks. The course offered an advanced level of training in workers’ compensation rehabilitation and provided a total of 8-hours of training. Attendees in the fields of physical therapy, occupational therapy and athletic training were granted 8 CEU credits for completing the course. Completion of the course also prepared the therapist for the Certified Workers’ Compensation Healthcare Provider™ (CWcHP) Exam. Analysis of attendees from the first two training sessions showed that 85% of the attendees were enrolled by their employers such as physical therapy/occupational health clinics or providers.

The course instructor, Christine Adams, MS, ATC, CWcHP, LMT, CPT, CEAS, is a leading educator of physical therapy and rehabilitation programs with special focus on workers’ compensation. Ms. Adams, Director of Rehabilitation for Heartland Rehabilitation Services Outpatient Division, has over 20 years of experience in outpatient rehabilitation. Ms. Adams holds a Master’s degree from the University of Florida in Athletic Training with a minor in health education and counseling.

“The CWcHP certification is a cutting edge innovation for the fields of physical therapy, occupational therapy and athletic training. It elevates the expertise of the practitioner and their value in the rehabilitation team in the healthcare world.” States Dr. John Mayer, President of ISPA. “The next course offering starts June 12 2014 and will run for 3 consecutive Thursdays.”

Complete information on this training course and the CWcHP certification can be obtained on the CWcHP web site: http://www.workcompcertification.com
“The online training course uses Cisco’s state of the art online Web Event Platform. The attendees’ feedback was overwhelmingly positive on the ease of using the online format. The instructor, Christine Adams, really shows how therapists can work as a team in rehabilitation of work comp patients. She is a practitioner and administrator in the field and her inside knowledge gives her a great rapport with those attending the training. ” Says Justin Mayer, Executive Director of ISPA and a key contributor to the course development. “It is interesting to note that so far in the two training courses we have held 85% of the attendees were enrolled as groups from the clinics and provider groups. I believe this shows that employers see the value of certification in Workers’ Comp Rehabilitation.” Added Mayer.

To obtain the CWcHP™ certification applicants must be in the field of physical therapy, occupational therapy and athletic training and they must pass the certification exam. The exam covers three areas of competency: clinical issues, legal issues and employer based knowledge. The test took two years to develop and utilizes the knowledge of leading physical therapy providers as well as state-of-the-art research in this field. After passing the examination a professional can use the initials, CWcHP™ after his/her name and on promotional materials.

“Our therapists thought that the workers’ compensation course was masterfully done,” explains Denise Balistrieri, Director of Outpatient Rehabilitation Services, Aurora Advanced Healthcare. “Having our therapists complete this training demonstrates our commitment to high-quality care and to the health and well-being of patients in the communities that we serve.” Aurora Advanced sent all of its physical therapists, occupational therapists and assistants through the training and certification and all passed the subsequent exam with high scores.
