Fine Design Living (http://www.FineDesignLiving.com), one of the Greater Toronto Area’s leading boutique design and build firms, specializing in high-quality exterior and interior custom renovations for residential and commercial clients, is advising consumers to keep in mind the benefits of indoor spring renovation projects.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) April 11, 2014

Fine Design Living (http://www.FineDesignLiving.com), one of the Greater Toronto Area’s leading boutique design and build firms, specializing in high-quality exterior and interior custom renovations for residential and commercial clients, is advising consumers to keep in mind the benefits of indoor spring renovation projects.

The warm spring weather brings with it the allure of planning artistic landscaping design ideas. However, it’s important to acknowledge the benefits of having designers and general contractors work on the inside of one’s home as well.

“As soon as spring hits, it’s easy for homeowners to get caught up with backyard landscaping and front yard landscaping ideas,” says Braden White, owner of Fine Design Living. “However, upgrading the interior of the home can add personal and monetary value.”

The kitchen and bathroom still add the most monetary value to homes, and a recent poll shows that Canadians appear to be following this trend by allocating most of their funds toward these areas. But White notes that personal spaces should not be ignored; while taking the time to design a bedroom or living room may not be as lucrative, it goes a long way to adding comfort to any home, particularly those homes with young children. (Source: “CIBC Poll: Renovation Nation? Canadians say they'll spend almost 30 per cent more on home renos in 2014,” Yahoo! Finance, March 27, 2014; http://finance.yahoo.com/news/cibc-poll-renovation-nation-canadians-080000148.html.)

According to White, one of the ways homeowners can add value and comfort to their house is by conducting an artistic interior design project on the basement. While a finished basement can yield a return of up to 75%, homeowners can also add an immediate personal touch by having it double as a game room for the kids, an extra living area, or a home office. (Source: Ducas, I., “Return on renovation costs: How much will you get back?" Style at Home web site; http://www.styleathome.com/homes/renovating/return-on-renovation-costs-how-much-will-you-get-back/a/882.)

“Homeowners often misjudge just how beneficial it can be to have a finished basement,” White observes. “That space can be utilized in so many different ways and have multiple functions. And when or if it comes time to sell, the return on the investment can be substantial.”

“Beautifying a home with a new deck, swimming pool, or some other intricate landscaping design is certainly a great idea, especially for the spring and summer season, when more time will be spent outdoors, in backyards and sitting on the patio, soaking up the sun’s rays,” White concludes. “That’s why homeowners should hire a landscaping company like Fine Design Living. We will put the same amount of attention to detail to the inside of a home as we will to the outside.”

Fine Design Living is a boutique design and build firm that specializes in high-quality exterior and interior custom renovations for both residential and commercial clients. 'Wittenberg' review: A pop culture Hamlet primer

Wittenberg: Comedy. By David Davalos. Directed by Josh Costello. Through May 4. $32-$50. Aurora Theatre, 2081 Addison St., Berkeley. Two hours, 10 minutes. (510) 843-4822. www.auroratheatre.org. There's an awful lot of "Hamlet" in David Davalos' comedy "Wittenberg." Direct, fractured and repurposed quotes from Shakespeare's tragedy trigger copious waves of laughter in the almost exhaustingly funny play that opened Thursday at the Aurora Theatre. But there's less of Hamlet himself than one might expect in a story about what the Danish prince was up to at the University of Wittenberg just before Shakespeare picked up the tale. And that's something of a problem. Reported by SFGate 29 minutes ago.

The Label Printers has won TLMI's prestigious Singer Award for Management Excellence - Medium Category - for the 5th time in a row, in their 5th year of eligibility. The Label Printers has once again won TLMI's (Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute, Inc.) Eugene Singer Award for Management Excellence. Bill Kane, The Label Printers Chief Executive said, "We don't run our business to win awards - but awards are a good outcome of a business well run. The Eugene Singer Award is always an honor - and a testament to our employees' efforts. We manage our inventory, we invest in technology, and we do all of the little things - and it all adds up."

Lori Campbell, Chief of Operations, said in an email to notify all of the company's employees about this 5th consecutive Singer Award on the night she accepted it, "…At The Label Printers I believe we have ingrained in our DNA a sense of never being satisfied, never content to rest on our laurels. It is one of the attributes that makes me most proud to work here…That doesn't mean we can't celebrate. We should (and will!) celebrate our achievements, accolades, and awards and bask in the momentary glory….just as long as we keep asking "ok, what's next?...Congratulations to us all and now let's get back to earning next year's award!!"

TLMI calls "the prestigious Eugene Singer Award for Management Excellence…one of the Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute's highest honors…this award recognizes excellence in business management, measured and defined by an established set of ratios through the participation in the TLMI Management Ratio Study. The Singer Award is given annually to four narrow web converting companies; each company within a certain sales range category [which are]: Small company - annual sales of less than $6 million, Mid-range company - annual sales of $6 to $14 million, Medium company - annual sales of $15 to $35 million, and Large company - annual sales greater than $35 million." The Label Printers won in the Medium category.

The Singer Award is a coveted honor both because it validates the performance of strong companies, but also because the companies submitting applications for it represent nearly 40% of the North American label market, and include the biggest competitors in the business.

Campbell says, "Winning an award is great…I'm thrilled for our organization, no doubt about it! But there is also real value in the TLMI Management Ratio Study, which is a powerful TLMI member benefit. The Singer Award is statistically based, providing us with useful, robust management information. It's one of the best, if not the best, benchmarking tool available to companies in our industry. I'm always eager to see the report, because I want to know if we made improvements in the areas we identified last year or where our numbers might have slipped. The award is the icing on the cake and the experience of letting the employees receive the outside validation of their work."

The company has now won the award for the fifth time in a row, in their fifth year of eligibility.

The Label Printers is a leading custom label and packaging manufacturer, serving a widely diverse customer base around the globe - ranging from Fortune 100 to start-up businesses. The company serves industries as varied as wine, pharmaceutical, and electrical. A woman charged with throwing her sneaker at Hillary Clinton during a Las Vegas speech Thursday is reportedly “obsessed” Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooter James Holmes.

Alison Ernst, 36, of Pheonix, was identified Friday as the shoe-thrower.

Colorado officials say she’s the same woman who was escorted from a courtroom after an outburst during Holmes’ August 2012 court hearing, the New York Daily News reported.

Her head was shaved at the time of the incident.

She stood up and told the court she had evidence “vital to the defense of James Holmes.”

She was quickly escorted out of the courtroom by two deputies.

She later filed a bizarre lawsuit against Holmes, who is accused of killing 12 and wounding 70 others at a screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” on July 20, 2012.

“James enters my head like Dennis Quaid in ‘Innerspace’ and he zooms to my heart and plays with it and forces me to care for him,” says the federal court document. “I seek a restraining order to stop Holmes from entering my mind through subliminal messaging and causing me to be obsessed with him on a daily basis.”

During Clinton’s speech at Mandalay Bay casino resort, Ernst was wearing a blonde wig, sandals and blue dress. She threw one of her sneakers at Clinton’s head from 60 feet away, according to a police report.

“Is that part of the Cirque du Soleil?” Clinton said after ducking the shoe. “My goodness, I didn’t realize solid waste management was so controversial.”

The report says that Ernst “appeared to be in an agitated state but aware of what she had just done.”

Inside the shoe was a document – a declassified 1967 Bolivian military operation to capture revolutionary leader Che Guevara.

Ernst was charged with disorderly conduct and has since been released at 9 p.m. last night.

She is scheduled to appear in court June 24.

Politics Test Silicon Valley's Russian Ties

$

SAN MATEO, Calif. (AP) — Entrepreneurs and investors say Silicon Valley's fast-growing financial ties with Russia's tech sector are being slowed down by current political tensions between the White House and the Kremlin.

"It's safe to say a lot of investors here are taking a step back to see how the situation will unfold," said Alexandra Johnson, who manages a $100 million venture fund called DFJ VTP Aurora, a Menlo Park, Calif., branch of Russian bank VTB. For decades, Russia's sophisticated scientists and engineers remained at arm's length from Silicon Valley's venture capitalists and marketing mavens. That changed in recent years with a flurry of investment, largely sparked in 2010 when then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited the region and met with high-tech leaders.

Russians investors, including billionaire Yuri Milner, who has large stakes in Facebook and Twitter, poured an estimated $2 billion into U.S. tech firms over the past three years, according to Johnson, who organized a technology symposium with venture capitalists and entrepreneurs last month in San Mateo, south of San Francisco.

But Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and investors fear negative economic fallout from Russia's takeover of Crimea, its troop buildup near Ukraine's border and its attempts to compel constitutional changes in that country, markedly raising political tensions with the West.

Secretary of State John Kerry has charged Russia with "creating a climate of fear and intimidation" and the Obama administration has frozen assets and revoked visas of some Russian officials and their associates.

Among the concerns in this technology center are whether visa limits will make it hard for business travel or for scientists to relocate. In addition, economic sanctions could tighten the flow of dollars between tech sectors in both countries. And for those U.S. and Russian firms with ties to Ukraine, rumors of a draft are fanning fears that young entrepreneurs and engineers will have to close up shop and fight.

Experts say an investment slowdown will be temporary and will not untrack rapidly growing, lucrative U.S.- Russia business relationships in the long run.

Axel Tillmann, who invests Russian venture capital on behalf of government-sponsored RVC-USA, said the tensions are definitely going to "slow things down for a while," describing a two- to three-month suspension of additional investment by Russian government funds in tech firms.

However, Tillmann said the flow of investments is certain to resume because Russian companies thrive on Silicon Valley's entrepreneurship.

"Russian technologists have been at the leading forefront of technology for many years, even going back to the Soviet Union, but they had the problem they called 'The lonely ideas,'" he said. "The ideas just sat there."

Tillmann said the one thing Russian companies are not very good at today is commercializing their technology — something that Silicon Valley firms are masters at doing. "When we combine, we get the best of both," he said.

In Russia, entrepreneurs and investors now tap Silicon Valley experts to try to replicate their success.

A planned technology hub outside Moscow, the Skolkovo Innovation Center, includes Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt, Cisco CEO John Chambers and retired Intel CEO Craig Barrett on its 17-member board.

Russian entrepreneurs have also launched their own firms in the Silicon Valley, and tech giants are buying stakes in Russian startups. Last year, for example, Cisco acquired a stake in Russian software developer Parallels and got a seat on its board.

The Russian Innovation Center, which opened two years ago on Silicon Valley's Sand Hill Road amid a cluster of venture capital firms, combines three firms investing in California companies committed to the Russian market.

And today more than 100 Russian high-tech firms have representative offices in the northern California region, including Russian search engine Yandex, which employs former Yahoo and Google engineers at its Palo Alto laboratory.

On April 3, San Jose-based Cisco, a valley leader in building ties to Russia, announced that it had won a contract to supply the video conferencing network for Moscow's water and sanitation supplier. Cisco has also reported that it is currently reviewing its Russian business practices for any possibility of corruption.

Spokesman John Earnhardt said they are watching events closely, but that Russia remains an important market.

Silicon Valley-based Dmitry Akhanov, president of the U.S. subsidiary of Russia's state-owned venture fund RUSNANO, said it has taken years to shape those East-West tech sector relationships.

"Political turmoil can happen, but business ties are much more sustainable because those are people-to-people, and those build trust," he said. "The diplomats need to calm down and think about the immediate consequences of their decisions. It's very easy to hurt an economy and much harder to rebuild."

Oleg Slepov, who heads the Russian Trade Representation's office in San Francisco, said he's spoken with many U.S. business leaders lately who tell him they have no plans to close or scale down their business in Russia.

Slepov said he's even optimistic that business ties may help ease the conflict.

"The interests of Russian and American companies are so intertwined today that, on itself, it becomes a factor that is contributing to easing of tensions between Russia and the U.S.," he said.

Suspect In Jewish Shootings Has An Appalling History Of White Supremacist Activities

Suspect In Jewish Shootings Has An Appalling History Of White Supremacist Activities A former Ku Klux Klan leader with a known history of anti-Semitism is suspected of killing three people in shootings at a Jewish community center and a Jewish retirement community in Kansas.

The attacks also left a 15-year-old boy in critical condition Sunday. The FBI is investigating the shootings as a hate crime.

Frazier Glenn Miller, a 73-year-old man from Aurora, Mo., has been taken into custody. Miller also goes by the alias Frazier Glenn Cross.

From the back of a police car after he was arrested for the shootings, Miller can be heard yelling "Heil Hitler."

He's accused of shooting at five people total at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City and Village Shalom, a Jewish retirement community a few blocks away, according to CNN. The shooting occurred a day before the start of Passover. The Southern Poverty Law Center calls Miller a "raging anti-Semite" and notes that he has written 12,000 posts on the Vanguard News Network, whose founder advocates for "exterminating" Jews. He is reportedly one of VNN's largest donors and distributes thousands of the organization's newsletter, The Aryan Alternative.

In the 1980s, Miller founded the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The SPLC later sued the organization for using intimidation tactics against black people, so Miller formed another Klan group, the White Patriot Party. He was then sentenced to six months in prison for violating his court settlement with the SPLC.

A year later, the FBI caught Miller with a cache of weapons and he was indicted for plotting to obtain stolen military weapons and for planning to kill SPLC founder Morris Dees. He testified against other Klan leaders and served three years of a five-year sentence he received as part of his plea deal.

While he was in prison, Miller wrote a book that he has posted online called "The White Man Speaks Out."

He has also posted a series of "hate videos" on his website in which he espouses his beliefs.

In the book, Miller says he is a former member of the Nazi party and tried to emulate Hitler in organizing "the White masses."

From the book:

My racist and anti-Semitic thoughts consumed me every day of my life. And, I was therefore, compelled to do everything possible to awaken White people, to organize them, and to try to save the White Race and Western civilization from those whom I believed were working to destroy both.

The SPLC highlights a 2010 U.S. Senate radio ad in which Miller said:

"We’ve sat back and allowed the Jews to take over our government, our banks, and our media. We’ve allowed tens of millions of mud people to invade our country, steal our jobs and our women, and destroy our children’s futures. America is no longer ours. America belongs to the Jews who rule it and to the mud people who multiply in it."

Before he became active in the white supremacist movement, Miller quit high school to join the U.S. Army, according to the SPLC. He was a Green Beret and served two tours in Vietnam.

Miller claims he read a racist newspaper in the early 1970s that sparked his interest in white supremacy, and in 1979, he was forced to retire from the Army because of his ties to the Klan. Later, when Miller founded his white supremacy groups, he used military tactics to train his recruits.

He reportedly wanted to create an all-white nation in North Carolina and South Carolina. In the 1980s, Miller was recruiting people to steal military weapons and explosives to "create a paramilitary guerrilla unit for later use in establishing a White Southland," according to a witness who testified in his trial.

Miller has also run for political office on several occasions as both a Democrat and a Republican. He's tried for nominations for North Carolina governor and state senate and has also run for Congress as an independent and for U.S. Senate as a write-in candidate.

He now faces charges of premeditated, first-degree murder.
