Obama To Grieve With Victims' Families At Fort Hood

By JOSH LEDERMAN, The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Returning once again to a grief-stricken corner of America, President Barack Obama is reprising his role as chief comforter, mourning with families of those killed last week at Fort Hood and offering solace to the nation.

It's a duty that Obama has had to fulfill far too often. Tucson. Aurora. Newtown. Boston. Washington Navy Yard. Fort Hood — twice.

The names of these communities have all become synonymous with tragedy in the years since Obama took office, each challenging the president to find ways to impart meaning to senseless death.

"Increasingly, giving these eulogies has become a central responsibility for our presidents," said Michael Waldman, who helped write many eulogies as President Bill Clinton's chief speechwriter. "A president is not just a political leader. He is the head of state and speaks for the whole country."

But as Obama returns to Fort Hood on Wednesday, he brings little in the way of solutions to offer a society that has been confounded by the frequency of events that have jolted Americans out of their sense of security. For a president who is on the path to ending two wars, warding off violence at home has proved an elusive challenge.

Those close to Obama say he sees his role after a tragedy as fulfilling a ministerial function for the nation. Valerie Jarrett, Obama's senior adviser and longtime friend, said although it's painful for Obama, he understands the importance for the president to show leadership, empathy and strength in times of crisis, and for him to spend time with each family member affected.

"It's hard because it's deeply personal for him," Jarrett said in an interview. "He identifies as a father, as a husband, as a son, as a family member."

The last time Obama came to Fort Hood, in the wake of another mass shooting in 2009, he told residents of the central Texas community that the 13 lives they lost would endure, their legacies safeguarded by the nation whose protection they had made their life's work.

"Every evening that the sun sets on a tranquil town, every dawn that a flag is unfurled, every moment that an American enjoys life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — that is their legacy," Obama said, adopting the role of comforter-in-chief for the first time.

Like an improbable bolt of lightning, tragedy has struck twice at Fort Hood. Army investigators are still piecing together what led to Spc. Ivan Lopez's deadly, eight-minute rampage last week, on the same sprawling post where an Army psychiatrist unloaded on his comrades five years earlier.

To be sure, Obama is not the first president called on to help Americans in their grief. Ronald Reagan had the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, Bill Clinton had Oklahoma City and George W. Bush had 9/11, to say nothing of the wars that American troops have fought overseas.

But for much of the country's history, the role fell largely to the vice president, said Douglas Brinkley, a presidential historian at Rice University. Modern transportation, around-the-clock media and the public's demand for answers has put a spotlight on the president's personal response to catastrophes.

"It is an evolving role of any president in a hyper-YouTube age to make sure you get your boot heels on the ground and you go to those memorials," Brinkley said, calling the president "the de facto spokesperson for our grief."

In the days after a 20-year-old gunned down elementary school students in Newtown, Conn., Obama said he had been reflecting on whether America was doing enough to prevent such violence. He concluded that it was not.

"We can't tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change," Obama said as he consoled heartbroken parents at a prayer vigil.

There are few signs today that a new push to address such societal ills through public policy is in the works.

Obama's efforts to seek stronger gun control protections fell flat in Congress. What some hoped could be a productive national conversation about mental health raised fears that patients could be stigmatized by the actions of criminals.

In the face of such long odds, the president may be reluctant to generate undue hope that the nation will enact new laws or programs. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama's speech Wednesday will focus on the victims and their families, not on policy.

After Newtown, the National Rifle Association pushed back against new gun control legislation, insisting that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." For proponents of more gun control, those words ring hollow following an insider attack on a base housing America's good guys with guns.

But for gun control foes — and there are plenty in Texas — equally hollow is the notion that the government can prevent such tragedies. Even after Fort Hood's second deadly shooting, military officials have warned that screening all soldiers for weapons as they enter the 108,000-acre base isn't feasible.

Adding complexity to the president's response are questions about whether the suspect's wartime service precipitated his actions. Although Lopez did a short stint in Iraq in 2011 and said he suffered a traumatic brain injury, Fort Hood officials have said his mental condition was not a "direct participating factor" in the shooting.

Such is the fraught political terrain that Obama's speechwriters must traverse as the president prepares, once again, to console a nation in grief. Craig Smith, a speechwriter in the Ford and first Bush administrations, said Obama, not his writers, makes the call about how far to go and whether to use the speech as a call to action.

"What you want to do is praise the people who lost their lives and use them to display certain virtues and values that the public needs to believe in at this moment," Smith said.

David Davalos' 'Wittenberg' at Aurora a magnet for big names

$

Shakespeare fans know that Wittenberg is where Prince Hamlet was attending university when he had to rush back to Elsinore for his dad's funeral. Protestants and some Catholics may associate the school with the theses of another faculty member, Martin Luther. With Aurora Theatre presenting David Davalos' 2008 comedy "Wittenberg," we sent a few questions to the actor-turned-playwright who lives with his family in Boulder, Colo., or, as he says, "the People's Republic of the Front Range." [...] he's telling them that Hamlet was a student at what was at the time a hotbed of iconoclastic, unorthodox thought, the center of the Protestant challenge to the orthodoxy of the church. [...] regular theatergoers would also remember that "Doctor Faustus" took place there. [...] that chain of connections - the triple play of Luther to Faustus to Hamlet - led me to wonder what if all three were there at the same time, influencing each other, setting each other up for the best-known parts of their respective stories. [...] when I began to think about "Wittenberg" as a campus comedy, I'd already sown the field for Hamlet as a moody undergrad and varsity athlete, Faustus as a Renaissance Timothy Leary and Luther as the divinity school equivalent of "The Paper Chase's" Professor Kingsfield. Apollo Minerals kicks off its biggest IOCG exploration program in the Gawler Craton

$
0
0
Apollo Minerals (ASX: AON) has commenced its largest exploration program yet at the new Iron-Oxide-Copper-Gold (IOCG) frontier in the northern Gawler Craton, South Australia.

The major exploration program is being conducted across joint venture areas associated with its Titan Project in the Gawler Craton, including two new joint venture areas; at Mars Aurora Tank and the Eagle Hawk Joint Venture.

Given recent results, this looks to have a better than even chance of success.

Numerous new iron oxide-copper-gold drill targets were identified in February at the Bundi prospect, within Apollo's Titan base and precious metals project in South Australia.

The Bundi gravity anomaly, consistent with the dominant IOCG target, is several times larger than that of Oz Minerals' (ASX:OZL) Carrapateena Deposit.

Apollo also continues to work closely with High Powered Exploration Inc (HPX) to finalise exploration plans for the proposed Commonwealth Hill farm-in and joint venture.

Notably, HPX is indirectly controlled by mining billionaire Robert Friedland, the founder of the $1 billion capped Ivanhoe Mines (TSE:IVN).

This will include a High Power Super Induced Polarisation survey over the Bundi North and Wirrida Intrusive Complex targets, anticipated to be the one of the largest and highest powered IP surveys ever undertaken in South Australia.

The HPX farm-in and JV transaction does not affect Apollo’s existing joint venture arrangements with Mincor Resources (ASX:MCR) including the adjacent Eaglehawk farm-in JV and the Aurora-Tank farm-in JV where Apollo has the right to earn 75% project interests.

*Exploration Program*

At the Mars Aurora Tank venture, a trial IP survey across the gravity and magnetic anomalies has commenced to determine if copper-gold sulphides are detectable and targetable with drilling.

In addition, a RAB drilling program has commenced to test for copper-gold beneath the pervasive sand cover.

The trial IP survey and near-surface drilling is close to completion and results are expected shortly.

A ground based gravity survey in and around the known magnetic anomaly and historic drilling has recently been completed and data is currently being analysed.

The survey was designed to provide a first pass assessment of the IOCG potential of the project, particularly focusing on identifying dense, non-magnetic bodies close to the known magnetic anomaly which are commonly key IOCG targets.

Early indications are promising and more information will be released as soon as possible.

Previous work at the project has identified outcropping ironstone, drill intersections of iron, gold, silver and copper, indications of volcanics, fault-related brecciation.

Hiltaba-equivalent age dates at circa 1584Ma have also been identified - these are also found at Prominent Hill and other key IOCG deposits in South Australia.

At Eaglehawk, a ground based gravity survey has recently been completed across the Bundi South prospect, directly adjacent to the Commonwealth Hill farm-in JV with HPX.

The survey is primarily targeting a possible southern extension to the Bundi anomaly and will also evaluate areas south of Bundi which have not previously been covered by Apollo.

A shallow drilling program also underway over the Bundi South prospect and is designed to complement the sampling already completed over the northern half of the Bundi anomaly where assays confirmed a large, high tenor surface copper anomaly.

Subject to exploration results, deeper drilling will be conducted.***Analysis*

The initial investment by HPX is $1 million at $0.02 and with an option to invest a further $1.4 million at $0.024 by June 30 2014, and if exploration does unearth a large IOCG deposit, there is further project investment to come from HPX.

Before that, the investment and expertise of HPX will de-risk Apollo Minerals and will likely render Apollo's current $6 million a blip in the rear view mirror.

Share price catalysts ahead include:

-    Results from the trial IP survey and rotary airblast drilling at the Mars Aurora Tank venture;
-    Results from the ground based gravity survey at Eaglehawk; and
-    The shallow drilling program over the Bundi South Prospect.

Designed for a professional chef and her family by Janice Teague, CKD, CBD of Drury Design, this Aurora, Illinois kitchen is one of Trends Magazine’s top 50 American Kitchens for 2013/14 and was also the first place winner in NKBA Chicago’s Midwest 2013 Design Visions competition. Gail Drury, CMKBD won a Trends top 50 American Kitchen award for a transitional kitchen in Hinsdale, Illinois in 2013.

Glen Ellyn, IL (PRWEB) April 10, 2014

Congrats go out to Janice Teague, CKD, CBD, of Drury Design in Glen Ellyn on designing one of Trends Magazine’s TOP 50 AMERICAN KITCHENS 2013-14. Designed for a professional chef and her family, this fresh transitional kitchen took first place in NKBA Chicago’s 2013 Midwest Design Visions contest.

The double award-winning kitchen serves multiple purposes, including hosting intimate cooking classes as well as large groups of people. Janice was challenged to design the space to include large counter work surfaces, a student observation center, and room for additional appliances – all in a way that feels like a home, not a commercial kitchen. For more project details, visit Drury Design’s kitchen and bath news blog.

Trends Top 50 US projects are chosen on the basis of excellence in design, function, product specification and style.

"One of the biggest trends in US kitchen design has been the evolution of a transitional style – a look that can be described as warm contemporary or refined traditional. This kitchen is a great example of this style. It’s designed to feel comfortable, but without the distraction of over-ornamentation. The design also turned an awkward layout with a small cooking area into a space that is functional and can cater to cooking classes being held by the chef owner,” says Paul Taylor editorial director, Trends Magazine

Dubbed the “Chef’s Domain” by Trends Publishing, the project will be featured on myTRENDS as well as in the Trends Top 50 US program through various online and offline media.

Fresh Transitional Kitchen Design Details

Achieving multiple objectives required a major rework of the existing space.

The owner, a professional chef, required a classroom setting to hold cooking classes for small groups of people. In addition, the owners entertain frequently. A flexible gathering space with fluid traffic flow and a full bar was essential.

Janice says the client had a very definitive idea of the style for her kitchen. “The inspiration for the layout and materials began by having a clear understanding of the owner’s aesthetic, necessities, and wishes. From that point, it was a matter of combining the client’s vision with my industry knowledge and experience.”

The kitchen has simple lines, the colors are soft and welcoming, and the space functions beautifully for the owner/chef. Details such as glass cabinets, granite counter tops, and distinctive lighting add special touches that complement the owner’s aesthetic.

Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. Comments on $215 Million Being Spent on Summer Roadwork in Toronto

Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. (http://www.SureSealPavement.com), the Greater Toronto Area’s (GTA) leading pavement maintenance and repair company, is releasing its expert opinion on the heavy spending being put into damaged roads across the GTA this summer.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) April 10, 2014

Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. (http://www.SureSealPavement.com), the Greater Toronto Area’s (GTA) leading pavement maintenance and repair company, is releasing its expert opinion on the heavy spending being put into damaged roads across the GTA this summer.

The City of Toronto plans to spend $215 million on roughly 185 kilometres of roads that need repair. It will be a rough time for commuters, as several major routes will be affected by the construction work. (Source: Hanstke, H. and Criger, E., “Toronto to spend $215 million on summer road work,” CityNews web site, April 7, 2014; http://www.citynews.ca/2014/04/07/toronto-to-spend-215m-on-summer-road-work/.)

“The Gardner Expressway will probably cause the most frustration for commuters,” says Lance Bradshaw, president and CEO of Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. “However, there are many other routes that will also be affected by the construction.”

Some of the projects are slated to last until December of 2016, with a break between June and August of 2015 to accommodate the Pan Am Games, so drivers have to recognize that there will be delays. In addition, summers in Toronto are typically known for heavy construction, and with 130 high-rise building projects already slated to happen this year on top of the road repairs, commuting could possibly become a nightmare for anyone driving in and out of the city on a daily basis. (Source: Evans, P., “130 highrise building projects in Toronto lead North America,” CBC web site, January 21, 2014; http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/130-highrise-building-projects-in-toronto-lead-north-america-1.2504776.)

Roadwork can be timely, but these projects are necessary,” Bradshaw adds. “That means commuters will have to find different modes of travel, plan out different routes, carpool, or travel at low traffic volume times of the day whenever possible.”

Bradshaw notes that pothole repair will also be a huge issue for Toronto, with over 120,000 having already been filled this year—double the amount as this time last year. Toronto will also spend an additional $60.0 million on upgrading the infrastructure of water and sewer mains.

“Twenty-one years in this business has taught us a lot about these types of paving projects,” Bradshaw concludes. “Sure-Seal is equipped to handle parking lots and roadways with durable, commercial-grade pavement systems built to last against the weather, the sun, and the damaging effects of petroleum and other chemical spills.”

Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. is a 20-year-old pavement maintenance contractor that services commercial, industrial, retail, office, and corporate property owners and managers throughout the Ontario region. The company provides both new construction and repair of asphalt pavement surfaces, including parking lots and roadways. With its headquarters in Brampton and an operations facility in Toronto, Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. serves the Greater Toronto Area, including Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Barrie, Markham, Newmarket, Aurora, Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Richmond Hill, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and more. Industry leader lauded for its success in customer satisfaction, depth of functionality and company direction

New York, NY and Oslo, Norway and London, UK (PRWEB) April 10, 2014

Confirmit, the leading global solutions provider for Customer Experience, Employee Engagement and Market Research, today announced that CRM Magazine recognized Confirmit’s leadership and vision, naming it a 2014 CRM magazine Service Leader Award recipient. Confirmit was selected as a leader in Enterprise Feedback Management for its reputation for customer satisfaction, company growth, and depth of functionality.

In its assessment of the 2014 Service Award categories, CRM magazine explains that systems often struggle to correlate data from social media and multimedia channels. It notes that parsing unstructured data remains a problem area in the EFM market and “is often of limited use to those tasked with managing customer experience, leaving vendors racing to develop solutions that will bridge the gap between feedback management and customer experience and ultimately make the data more actionable.” With its acquisition of Integrasco this year, Confirmit brings advanced technologies for capturing social insights and analyzing unstructured text into its portfolio of software offerings.

John Ragsdale, Vice President of Technology research at the Technology Services Industry Association, notes Confirmit’s status as a “specialist in satisfaction and loyalty tracking for service organizations.” Confirmit was also praised for its mature partner community, and received a high score for company direction, as a result of its recent acquisitions and focused product roadmap, which has since led to the highly successful launch of Confirmit Horizons Version 18.

“Confirmit is driven in its endeavors to integrate the latest technologies into our solutions to improve the quality and depth of customer feedback to create more data-driven business decisions,” said Michael Wooh, Chief Marketing Officer, Confirmit. “Our recent acquisition of Integrasco, and CustomerSat in 2012, has helped us continue our commitment to leadership within the VoC market, and enables our customers to drive positive change through our solutions.”

The 2014 Service Leader Award recipients were selected by industry analysts and consultants after rigorously researching, evaluating and scoring the top vendors in eight categories based on specific criteria including reputation for customer satisfaction, depth of functionality or services, company direction, and technology costs over a five-year period. One winner and three leaders were selected in each category based on a proprietary selection formula.

The CRM magazine Service Award announcement is on the heels of Confirmit’s recent recognition in Forrester Research’s Voice of the Customer Vendor Landscape Report, 2014, as a leader in survey creation management capabilities, analysis capabilities, and response management.

Confirmit and the other 2014 CRM magazine Service Award recipients are featured in the March 2014 issue of CRM magazine.

On May 8-9, Confirmit will host its annual Confirmit Community Conference in Orlando, Florida as part of a global roadshow taking place in key locations in Europe and North America. Thought leaders represented so far on the agenda include ViaSat and Research Now, as well as Bruce Temkin and other leading industry experts.

This New Timelapse Of Norway's Aurora Borealis Is Absolutely Breathtaking

$

The aurora is a natural light display that few people get to see. Brazilian photographer Felipe Pitta recently caught a rare glimpse of the phenomenon and shared his timelapse video with us.

To capture the aurora, Pitta traveled to Ersfjordbotn, Norway, a small village known as "The Fjord of Light." Here's a glimpse of the aurora that Pitta saw:

Auroras happen in areas of the Earth close to the Arctic and Antarctic circles. The light show is called the aurora borealis (northern lights) in the north and the aurora australis (southern lights) in the south.

The light is created by charged particles smashing into the Earth's atmosphere. When fast-moving charged particles released by the sun, called the solar wind, reach Earth they are redirected by the Earth's magnetic field. Some flow around the planet, while others are directed toward the Earth's polar areas.

There, the electrons encounter atoms of oxygen and nitrogen. When the two particles smash together, they release energy in the form of light. The energy of the electron and the type of atom it hits determines the color of the aurora.

Green aurora are caused by electrons hitting oxygen atoms that are less than 150 miles from the Earth's surface, while red are caused by oxygen atoms more than 150 miles above the Earth. Blue aurora are caused by electrons hitting nitrogen atoms less than 60 miles above Earth, and violet is produced by collisions with nitrogen above 60 miles.

The solar wind particles stream out of the sun in constantly changing strengths and directions, which is what makes the aurora appear to "dance." Atmospheric currents also influence the pattern of the aurora.

Auroras aren't commonly seen from Earth, but they are frequently visible from space. Here's what it looks like from the International Space Station:

Some of the best places to catch the aurora borealis are areas north of the Arctic Circle like the most northern parts of Alaska, Canada, Norway, Russia, and Greenland.

Seeing the Aurora Australia is far trickier because the only landmass south of the Antarctic Circle is Antarctica. Other potential viewing places include the Southern coast of Australia, New Zealand, and South America.

The maps below show auroral activity for today. They give you an idea of where you can usually catch them. Here's Pitta's full timelapse. It's worth watching:
