The Mother Of An Aurora Victim Is 'Appalled' By John McCain

The Mother Of An Aurora Victim Is 'Appalled' By John McCain The mother of a young man killed in the Aurora, Colo. movie theater massacre told TPM on Thursday she was appalled at the way Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) handled her question about an assault weapons ban at a town hall event in Phoenix.

“I was very surprised that a senator, who has been in office for over 30 years, would address a grieving mother, who just lost her son exactly seven months prior — yesterday was the 20th, I lost my son on 7-20-2012 — to tell me that I needed ‘some straight talk,’” Caren Teves said by phone.

At Wednesday’s town hall, Teves told McCain that her son, Alex, was killed in the massacre, and she urged the senator to support a ban on assault weapons. McCain responded: “I can tell you right now you need some straight talk. That assault weapons ban will not pass the Congress of the United States.”

The crowd, many of whom appeared to be pro-gun, burst into cheers and applause at McCain’s comments. But Teves said she wasn’t fazed by that, and those cheers, as captured by a local TV news crew, were only part of the story.

“I wasn’t surprised,” Teves said. “It’s a large, divided issue. I did start my sentence with — and I believe this — ‘I am a supporter of the Second Amendment.’ What they did not show you in that clip was after I did say that the military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines don’t belong on our streets, there was also some huge support and applause that unfortunately was cut out of that clip.”

Teves was accompanied at the town hall event by Patricia Maisch, the woman who helped stop shooter Jared Lee Loughner in the Tucson, Ariz., massacre in January 2011. Maisch also recorded McCain’s comments on video, and later told TPM she was disappointed by the senator’s response. “I always wish there was a more positive outcome after those events,” Maisch said.

Teves said her husband recently wrote McCain a letter addressing the Aurora shooting, which took the lives of their son and 11 other people. But she said McCain’s office responded with a impersonal form letter that focused on an an entirely different massacre: the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Neither McCain nor his staff approached her after the town hall event, she added.

“I was surprised at that,” Teves said. “It takes a lot for me to just get out of bed every morning. I mean, this is still so new and so fresh, that my son was murdered. And I just expected a little more respect from someone who’s been in office over 30 years, and his staff. Between that and the form letter that we received, it’s just, it’s appalling.”

Caren and Tom Teves, who live in Phoenix, said they have supported McCain in the past, including his last campaign. “I have voted Republican my whole life,” Tom Teves told TPM. “I’ll never vote Republican again — ever.”

A video, posted Thursday by Phoenix’s KTVK, showed McCain’s response to Teves, including the applause and cheers about McCain’s “straight talk” comment. Watch the exchange:

Jaw-dropping displays of the northern lights can be seen in a stunning series of time-lapse videos captured in Sweden this month by astrophotographer Chad Blakley.

Blakley has been filming in Sweden's Abisko National Park, which offers a view of glowing aurora borealis over snowy mountains. Swooshing and swirling green northern lights can be seen glimmering in a deep purple sky in the videos, which were shot over a 13-day stretch.

"We have seen powerful auroras in the sky above Abisko for 13 nights in a row and it looks like there are more to come!" said Blakley, who runs the site LightsOverLapland.com. "Last night I witnessed one of the finest aurora displays I have seen in many…

Memoir from New Author Captures the Turmoil of a Nation Gripped by War and a Young Man’s Search for Inner and Outer Peace

"The Struggle Within: Protesting the Iraq War" to be released to mark the Iraq War’s 10th anniversary.

Aurora, CO (PRWEB) February 23, 2013

Coinciding with the Iraq war’s 10th anniversary, the book, "The Struggle Within: Protesting the Iraq War" by John Dickson, adds to the reflection and debate on the war the anniversary brings through its story of a young man enduring a soul-searching journey, trying to stop the war before and after it began. The book also reveals an aspect of the war seldom discussed—the war from the perspective of a protestor in conservative North Texas during a time of spiritual, cultural, and political conflict.

“I looked up and saw the Washington Monument towering above and knew this is what America was all about. Not about military, geo-political, or global economic power. It was about the people, plain and simple. It was about people wanting to live in peace and for others to be able do the same, people coming together for power not to be wielded, to be left alone, like the weapon it is, unloaded, with the safety on.”

With almost weekly news reports of continued violence coming from Iraq, combined with U.S. troops coming home facing significant mental and physical challenges, the 10th anniversary of the Iraq war gives the nation and the world an opportunity to reflect on and learn from how the war began and the numerous lives it affected.

Distributed through Amazon’s CreateSpace and Redway Media, "The Struggle Within: Protesting the Iraq War" will be available March 19, 2013 in paperback ($15), ebook, and audiobook ($10).

About the Author: John Dickson is a teacher and writer living in Aurora, Colorado. He holds a B.A. in History from the University of Texas at Arlington and a M. Ed. from Regis University in Denver. His interests lie in social justice, human and animal rights, and making the earth sustainable for future generations of all life forms. He also loves playing guitar, and spending time with his wife, children, and Sophie, the family Welsh Terrier. Reported by PRWeb 21 hours ago.

Senate gun control deal stuck on issue of federal background records

Amid speculation that a bipartisan deal is near, Republican negotiator tells Fox News 'I don't think we're that close to a deal'

Reports of an imminent deal over new gun controls were dismissed by a key Republican negotiator Sunday as senators struggled to find a middle way between calls for tougher regulations in the wake of the Newtown school shooting and fearsome resistance from the gun lobby.

The Senate Judiciary Committee convenes on Thursday to begin thrashing out positions over proposed legislation relating to the sale and manufacture of guns. Speculation is running high that a deal is in the offing between leading senators for a bipartisan bill that would extend FBI background checks to all gun sales as a means of weeding out criminal buyers or those with mental health problems.

Both the Washington Post and the New York Times reported on Sunday that a deal between four senators – two Democrats and two Republicans – over extending background checks was now close, and that the aim was to present a draft bill to the judiciary committee at its hearing on Thursday.

But Tom Coburn, the leading Republican senator in the group of four, poured cold water on the idea that a breakthrough was imminent. He told Fox News Sunday that agreement was still proving elusive: "I don't think we're that close to a deal," he said.

The sticking point appears to the question of record-keeping. Advocates of greater controls, led by the New York senator Chuck Schumer within the group of four, want to see background checks extended to all gun sales, beyond the current position where only purchases at licensed gun shops are subject to FBI monitoring.

Some 40% of all gun sales go through private dealers who are exempt from any federal review.

Schumer and other reformers want private sales, made at gun shows and through the internet, not only to be put through the FBI-maintained National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), but they also want such sales to be recorded. That would make it easier for police to track the movement of illegal guns and ensure firearms aren't procured by people with mental health issues.

The idea of registering all gun sales is red rag to the pro-gun lobby. They see it as a first step towards a federal registry of all guns and gun owners in America which in turn would prepare the way for a government conspiracy to confiscate the weapons.

"There absolutely will not be record-keeping on legitimate, law-abiding gun owners," Coburn said.

The Senate is taking the lead in the debate over gun controls in the wake of the Connecticut shooting in December in which 20 children were killed in their classrooms in Sandy Hook elementary school. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where bipartisan agreement is likely to be even more difficult to achieve, is holding back until the Senate makes clear its intentions.

There are three separate strands of legislation currently being discussed by senators. The first is the extension of background checks which is seen as having the best chance of success, the stalemate over record-keeping notwithstanding.

A second strand that is also attracting support from both parties is the idea of clamping down on so-called "straw purchasers"– those who buy guns on behalf of criminals who could not pass a background check themselves.

The third strand is looking very perilous as it is staunchly opposed by most Republicans and many Democrats, including Harry Reid, the Democratic leader in the Senate. That is the idea, favoured by Obama, of reviving a federal ban on semi-automatic assault weapons that lapsed in 2004 as well as imposing an upper limit on the size of magazines that can be attached to guns.

Gun control advocates point out that many of the most horrific recent mass shootings – including Newtown, Aurora and Tucson – have involved such military-style firearms equipped with large-capacity magazines capable of firing – in the case of the Aurora cinema massacre – up to 100 rounds in a matter of minutes. But the gun rights lobby sees the proposed ban as a federal assault on the Second Amendment right to bear arms, and have vowed to oppose it to the end. Reported by guardian.co.uk 12 hours ago.

TokBox’s WebRTC-Based Video Chat Platform Now Supports Firefox Nightly And Aurora

0
0
TokBox, the live video chat platform that was acquired by Spain’s Telefónica in 2012, was one of the first companies to fully bet on WebRTC (the Web Real-Time Communication API), the quickly developing standard for plugin-free in-browser video, audio and text chat. After launching its Chrome integration earlier this year, TokBox today launched its support for Mozilla’s Firefox – starting with the bleeding edge Aurora and Nightly editions of the popular browser. Now that TokBox supports Firefox, developers using its WebRTC-based OpenTok platform can write video-enabled apps that allow for chats between users on iOS, Chrome and Firefox. With WebRTC now being part of Firefox’s early release versions, users can expect to see it in the stable version of Firefox somewhere around version 21 or 22 (the stable channel is currently on version 19). As TokBox CEO Ian Small told me last week, his company started working with Mozilla sometime around last November. His team got early access to Mozilla’s WebRTC implementations and worked closely with the team there as Mozilla stabilized its own implementations of the standard. TokBox’s OpenTok platform ensures that developers don’t have to worry about the different WebRTC implementations on different browsers and the platform will also provides numerous additional services that a native WebRTC app doesn’t have provide, including, for example, broadcasting to a large group of viewers and video recording. OpenTok, the company says, is currently being used by more than 70,000 organizations, including the likes of Major League Baseball, Ford, Bridgestone and the remote presence startup Double Robotics. “Between Firefox 21 and Chrome 25,” Small told me, “we now have what appears to be a reasonably stable interop situation.” WebRTC, he argued is still “in its infancy.” The native version in the browser can be used to connect two people, but the standard doesn’t offer features like letting developers connect more than two people at a time or even record sessions. Based on TokBox’s experience with WebRTC, Small also believes that the spec should accommodate alternative video codecs besides the Google-backed VP8 format. In addition, he argues that bandwidth allocation, which would allow apps to devote more bandwidth to the speaker, for example, should be part of the standard. Despite these issues, however, Small believes that WebRTC will see “serious pickup” in the second half of this year, especially now that most of the key mobile and desktop platforms support it. Car Crash Ends in 5th OWI Charge for Port Man

Patch Port Washington-Saukville, WI --

A Port Washington man is facing his fifth OWI charge after failing field sobriety tests and being found with a bag of what officers believed to be synthetic marijuana.

Kevin Kroboth, 32, faces one felony charge of operating while intoxicated, fifth or sixth offense, and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. He faces 6 years, 30 days in prison, $10,500 in fines and revocation of his driving privileges for up to eight years.

A Port Washington officer in the area of West Grand Avenue and North Sweetwater Boulevard at 4:12 p.m. Feb. 13 was alerted to a crash after hearing a "crunching noise," according to the criminal complaint. He noticed tire tracks from a car running up the curb and hitting a road sign, where it was resting.

The officer spoke to Kroboth, who had been driving and was the only passenger in the car. According to the complaint, "his speech was slow and ... his eyes were extremely red and blood shot."

The officer asked Kroboth if he had been smoking marijuana, and he said no. The officer then went on to conduct field sobriety tests, such as a toe-to-heel walk and the reciting the alphabet, and according to the report Kroboth failed these tests.

The officer searched Kroboth's car and found a glass vial that read "Sonic Zero Cherry 1.5g" with a green leafy substance inside. Kroboth denied that it was marijuana, and the officer, from his training and experience, believed the substance to be K2, which is a synthetic drug resembling marijuana.

Kroboth was taken to Aurora Hospital for a blood test to check for substances; he has prior OWI convictions in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Kroboth will appear in court at 8:30 a.m. March 20 for a status hearing. Reported by Patch 44 minutes ago.
