Perception of Time, Effects of Video Games and Music on the Brain, Chemistry of Tooth Cleaning and Staining were a few experiments conducted by Middle School students of Everest Academy at the Regional Science Fair in Aurora.

LEMONT, IL (PRWEB) March 31, 2014

“Do video games affect your reaction time?” “What soil grows the best pea pods?” "Is it true that tea stains your teeth?” “What kind of music is best for study time?” The young aspiring scientists of Everest Academy Middle School investigated these questions and other diverse topics during the recent Science Fair at Everest Academy, upon which five seventh graders and three eighth graders advanced to Regionals, with seventh grader, Hannah Yep, advancing to State.

When asked how she felt about the competition at Regionals, Hannah Yep, whose project Turn That Down investigated the effects that different types of music have on one’s ability to concentrate, responded, “There were a lot of projects that were like mine so I felt I had to do the very best I could.” Hannah did just that, advancing to State with Outstanding Honors. Though some parents were not pleased with the long wait times many students had before being judged, Everest mom Laura Henze said she was quite impressed with how organized the science fair seemed to be and how many volunteers there were.

Everest Academy students competed against participants from 50 other schools with over 500 projects. Second Place Honors were awarded to Alia Akroush of Lemont and Kamil Zaborski of Romeoville, First Place Honors to Sam Deppert of Lemont and Julia Delgado of Joliet, and Outstanding Honors to Sophia Colarelli of Lockport, Hanna Yep of Homer Glen, and the team of Jack Zabilka and Michael Henze, both of Lemont.

Everest Academy is an independent Roman Catholic school in Lemont educating children from preschool through eighth grade. Science is taught in all grades, including preschool. The teachers and staff are dedicated to forming the whole child by providing the highest level of academics, by building strong character, and by preparing generous leaders ready to serve the community. Piers Morgan Departs CNN as 'Breaking News! There Is None!' Becomes Company Policy

0
0
When Piers Morgan first came to CNN three years ago, the network was already in decline. Morgan arrived to fill the nine o'clock evening spot previously anchored by Larry King. King interviewed the most interesting and important leaders of the time, and celebrities, some with talent. He also interviewed psychics, faith healers, and people who talked to the dead, swallowing this crap with endearing (and infuriating) credulity. This was not news, but one grows fond of grandpa and when King left, even I, a hardcore news junky, was sad.

I felt no fondness for his replacement, Piers Morgan. The worst kind of host -- a lightweight, smarmy talent contest judge with prior employment by Rupert Murdoch at one of the worst tabloids in British history. This was the end.

My antipathy lasted until the day he sank his teeth into the issue that would doom him: gun control. Gun violence was something Morgan cared about and it transformed him.

In the wake of the Aurora and Newtown gun massacres, he took on anyone who'd talk about guns and their availability to the insane and partially insane. His position was clear. He believed there should be more gun control. He spoke to surviving victims of gun violence and families of the dead. He spoke to advocates on both sides who could make rational or even quasi-rational argument, including employees of the NRA and even more extreme organizations. He fought hard and did not give up despite obvious pressure (and threats) to do so. At times, as he wrapped his show, he spoke eloquently, as a father one suspects, about the vast number of horrific and unnecessary deaths caused by guns in America. He became the opposite of what he appeared to be at the start. He became a man of conviction.

As every single day in America is filled with avoidable gun deaths, his obsession was news. What could be more revealing of political cowardice in America than this? Kids had their brains blown out -- elected officials caved to special interests.

Morgan pointed this out relentlessly. As he stated exactly where he stood, there was no hidden bias. He handled himself well. He was real. And he was getting better and better at putting hypocrites and bullies on the spot.

By the time he got the boot for this a few weeks ago, I was a fan. For me, his departure is the last straw. After twenty years of getting my TV news from CNN, I will go elsewhere or just confine myself to internet and print.

Having fired Piers Morgan for devoting a few hours here and there solely to gun violence in America (which kills more than 30,000 people a year), CNN indulged in a far more obsessive orgy of speculation about a plane that flew out of a foreign airport and crashed into a foreign sea. What has been learned since the plane took off three weeks ago, could be conveyed in ten minutes. Instead hundreds of hours have been blown on the story.

During these hours and weeks a dozen other serious news stories were ignored or received less attention than they deserved. The Ukraine crisis grew worse abroad and GM was revealed to have ignored (concealed?) a massive safety issue at home leading to several deaths over almost a decade. Only a mudslide (good visuals) could distract the flight-obsessed reporters for a few hours.

Lacking the conviction of its best reporters, the network has become a ghoulish disaster-victim-exploitation-porno-channel. Anderson Cooper, a once fine journalist, has become tear-jerker in chief. "I can't imagine how you'll get through this." (Come on, cry!) "Our thoughts are with you." (Weep! Go on!)

He and CNN, however, miss the essence of both news and (commercial point this) drama: in the long run people are only interested in those who do things, who change things, who make news, not those who are the passive victims, however tragic they may be. Nor, in the long run, will people be held by speculation when in their hearts they know they are missing real news that may change their lives.

Tonight, CNN is still OCD on flight 370. "Breaking news! There is none!""More Tears To Come -- Stay Tuned!" The "edging" continues interminably, but not for me.

Goodbye, Piers Morgan, RIP CNN. Reported by Huffington Post 9 hours ago.

Want To Legally Shoot At Drones? Then Move To Deer Trail, Colorado

Want To Legally Shoot At Drones? Then Move To Deer Trail, Colorado The market may still be amused by Amazon's latest forward P/E boosting gimmick in the form of its entertaining (and stock price boosting if only briefly) proposal to deliver packages (some of which haven't even been ordered) by drone, but some US towns, tired of this endless invasion of just in time violators, are already taking aim at the messenger. Case in point: Deer Trail, Colorado, a city of 563, which Bloomberg reports, may approve today a measure that allows the town to issue hunting licenses for unmanned aerial vehicles, i.e., drones.

Apparently some luddites people still place civil rights over the potential of bottom line profits achieved through increasingly more intrusive technology. People like Phillip Steel, a 49-year-old welding inspector, who wrote the proposed law *as a symbolic protest after hearing a radio news report that the federal government is drafting a plan to integrate drones into civilian airspace, he said. The measure sets a bounty of as much as $100 for a drone with U.S. government markings, although anyone who shoots at one could be subject to criminal or civil liability, *according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

“That plan is a taking of property rights, a taking of civil rights,” said Steel, who wears a black duster coat and a cowboy hat. “According to a 1964 Supreme Court decision, a property owner owns airspace up to 1,000 feet above the ground.”

It also appears some Americans still value their privacy in an age when every US citizen is automatically expected to relinquish all private date to the NSA collective:

The Deer Trail ordinance highlights growing privacy concerns nationwide with the expanded use of camera-equipped drones, which can be as small as radio-controlled aircraft. Thirteen states enacted 16 laws addressing use of the tiny vehicles, and others are being considered in Indiana, Washington and Utah, according to the Denver-based National Conference of State Legislatures.

That said, one will hardly see the spirited approach as exhibited in libertarian Colorado towns spreading across the US:

The drone-hunting ordinance comes against a backdrop of secession votes last year in 11 rural Colorado counties seeking to form a 51st state -- with five voting in favor of studying such a plan. The move followed the enactment of the toughest gun restrictions in the state in a decade in response to a deadly shooting in an Aurora movie theater.

And why should it - people elsewhere are far more concerned with getting their fake Facebook clicks.

What is perhaps more amusing is that the FAA, instead of resisting this latest push to fill the skies with buzzing entities, has already warned the Colorado town of retaliation:

The Deer Trail proposal would allow those holding a $25 hunting license to shoot at drones within the one-square-mile town limits. Even if approved, the ordinance is illegal, federal and state officials said.

A drone *“hit by gunfire could crash, causing damage to persons or property on the ground, or it could collide with other objects in the air,” *the FAA said in a statement. “Shooting at an unmanned aircraft could result in criminal or civil liability, just as would firing at a manned airplane.”

Congress asked the FAA to develop a plan to integrate drones into U.S. airspace by September, 2015. The agency estimates about 7,500 commercial unmanned aircraft will be operating within five years of being allowed in U.S. airspace.

In this case Congress is merely doing the bidding of corporations which are delighted to have their "delivery objects" fill the sky, and of course the NSA. So nothing new there. Still, should Deer Trail pass the measure, it will likely incite at least some comparable moves in other smaller US cities where people still haven't completely lost their minds:

Steel was required to gather 19 signatures, or 5 percent of the registered voters in Deer Trail, to get the measure on the ballot. He turned in 23. Voter turnout is expected to be high in the town, located about 56 miles (90 kilometers) east of Denver, said Mayor Frank Fields, who is up for re-election.

*“This could bring in some free money -- that’s why I’m all for it,” Fields said.*

The proposal allows town officials to spend as much as $10,000 in municipal funds to “establish an unmanned aerial vehicle recognition program.” Shooters must be on private property and are limited to three shots per so-called engagement, “unless there exists an imminent threat to life and safety.”

The vote on the measure will take place today - we eagerly look forward to the outcome, and even more eagerly wait to see if in case of successful passage, the FAA will finally give the official green light to weaponize drones flying above the US. You know, for self-defense purposes... Reported by Zero Hedge 8 hours ago.

Mobile Communications or “SmoothTalker” manufactured the first FCC and Industry Canada certified booster in 2001. Their proprietary STEALTH TECH® technology, developed 3 years ago, ensured total network protection which is now the type of technology that the FCC mandates in the new rules governing cellular signal boosters.

Tom Vagenas, SmoothTalker CEO states, “Our new wireless booster solutions provide a totally wireless cellular boost to all mobile cellular devices and still give the customers the performance they have been accustomed to from SmoothTalker. Rahm Emanuel's Pension Plan Of Lower Benefits And Higher Taxes Will Rile Pretty Much Everyone

0
0
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's plan for fixing part of the nation's worst municipal pension crisis is now in the hands of state lawmakers — and it's likely just the first of many from cities across the state seeking legislative help for their employee retirement funds.

The Democratic mayor's proposal comes just months after the General Assembly finally tackled a plan — challenged in court — to deal with its own $100 billion pension problem. But Emanuel hasn't yet addressed shortfalls in the city's fire and police pension programs, a problem that nearly every large city in Illinois faces. Chicago has the worst-funded public pension system of any major U.S. city, a distinction that could threaten its attempts to position itself as a modern transportation hub and a place for high-tech development.

Emanuel announced he had reached a deal with several municipal and laborers unions to cut in half a $19.5 billion pension debt over 40 years in accounts that cover more than 50,000 employees and retirees. The agreement would raise property taxes by $250 million over five years, require higher contributions from employees and reduce the annual benefits retirees receive.

Less than a year from facing the voters for re-election, Emanuel's plan is politically risky.

"Voters did not elect me to think about my political future," Emanuel said in a statement Tuesday. "They elected me to think about Chicago's future."

He suggested the effort with the unions could be a template for solving $10 billion in police and fire shortfalls, but didn't suggest specifics, including how the city can meet a required $600 million balloon payment to police and fire funds next year.

And despite Emanuel's claim of widespread union support, a coalition of labor groups representing firefighters, police officers, teachers, nurses and other city workers called We Are One Chicago all but promised a lawsuit if lawmakers OK the plan. A similar group has filed a lawsuit over the state plan.

In Springfield, Republicans were noncommittal, saying they wanted to see the details and who would have to pay for the plan before they signed on. Democrats, who control supermajorities in both legislative chambers, already begun drafting language for the necessary bills in the House.

Other cities wrestling with their own pension shortfalls are watching.

"Chicago drives things throughout the state and it also gets the majority of funding from Springfield and Washington, D.C.," Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis said. "A healthy Chicago means more scraps for the Peorias, Rockfords, Danvilles of the state."

Rep. Elaine Nekritz, a Northbrook Democrat and House leader on pension issues, predicted lawmakers would deal with the current Emanuel plan by itself, but that when it comes to police and fire funds, Chicago and the state's other large cities will be coming to Springfield for help.

Aurora, the state's second-largest city, is among municipalities struggling with police and fire obligations, including state financial penalties to take effect in 2016 for cities that do not make sufficient contributions to those pension accounts. That amounts to an increase of more than $1 million annually for Aurora, which has reduced its operating expenses and laid off employees in recent years, Mayor Tom Weisner said.

"It's not sustainable. Without some reform, there's going to be cities that basically, I believe, will be going under," Weisner said. "I'd be hard-pressed to find a community whose leaders are not in favor of pension reform for public safety employees."

According to the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, a legislative budget analyst, police and fire pension funds in cities outside Chicago have deteriorated significantly in the past two decades. Police funds, for example, were 75 percent funded in 1991, while they were only 54 percent funded — $4.4 billion short — in 2010.

The commission points out that assets in that time have tripled, but liabilities have increased even more. Springfield Mayor Michael Houston said police and fire funds were hit hard by the financial downturn of 2008 and, over the years, legislatively approved enhancements to pension benefits that did not come with money to pay for them.

"While we can lobby for changes, it's up to the state Legislature to make changes," Houston said.

If the state approves Emanuel's plan, "it has the potential to create a path for the mayor to address his police and fire pension fund, which will also need to be addressed by downstate police and fire funds," said Laurence Msall, president of the Chicago-based Civic Federation.

But he cautioned that the two systems are different. Chicago is unique for having a separate fund for municipal employees and laborers. In other cities, those jobs are covered by the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, which is generally in good shape in cities across the state because of stricter contribution requirements and less-generous benefits.
