Magna International Inc. (TSE:MG), North America’s largest auto-parts supplier, reported a 31 percent increase in fourth-quarter profit as vehicle production grew in North America and Europe. It also lifted its dividend.

Net income attributable to the company rose to $458 million, or $2.03 a share, in the three months ended Dec. 31, from $351 million, or $1.49 a share, in the year-earlier period, the Aurora, Ontario-based company said in a statement today.

Analysts on average were looking for four-quarter profit of $1.55 per share.

Revenue climbed 14 percent to $9.17 billion.

Magna said sales revenue improved as vehicle production increased 6 percent in North America and 5 percent in Europe in the fourth quarter, offsetting a decline in the company's "rest of the world" production sales. Production sales in Asia increased, it said.

Complete vehicle assembly sales increased 13 percent to $788 million, from $697 million a year earlier, while complete vehicle assembly volumes increased jumped 17 percent to approximately 37,000 units.

Magna raised its quarterly dividend to 38 cents per share from 32 cents per share, payable on March 28 to shareholders of record on March 14.

“We maintained our solid performance in North America and made further progress in improving profitability in Europe,” Chief Executive Officer Don Walker said in the statement. “Recent investments in Asia have begun to yield returns, even while we continue to invest in the region.”

Looking ahead, Magna cut its 2014 forecast for sales in its core vehicle parts business, but maintained its total sales outlook.

The company said it projected sales of $28.4 billion-$29.7 billion in its parts business, slightly lower than the $28.6 billion-$29.9 billion estimated in January.

Magna raised its sales forecast for the complete vehicle business to $2.8 billion-$3.1 billion from $2.6 billion-$2.9 billion.

Magna's shares closed up 1.5 percent to C$98.57 on Feb. 28 in Toronto. The stock has advanced 72 percent in the past 12 months, outperforming the benchmark S&P/TSX Composite index (TSE:OSPTX) which has gained approximately 11 percent.

18-Year-Old Sues Parents for Support After Moving Out

18-Year-Old Sues Parents for Support After Moving Out An 18-year-old senior in New Jersey is now suing her parents for immediate financial support and trying to force them to pay for her college education. Rachel Canning, the daughter of a retired Lincoln Park police chief, is living with the family of her best friend. The teen had it declared in court that she is nonemancipated and dependent on her parents financially.

Sean and Elizabeth Canning, Rachel’s parents, have not paid an $5,306 Morris Catholic tuition bill, and Rachel’s suit wants them to be pay the bill, pay her living and transportation expenses, and create a college fund for her.  Rachel states in her court papers, “My parents have rationalized their actions by blaming me for not following their rules. They stopped paying my high school tuition to punish the school and me and have redirected my college fund, indicating their refusal to afford me an education as a punishment.”

But her father contended that Rachel left voluntarily, saying, “We love our child and miss her. This is terrible. It’s killing me and my wife. We have a child we want home. We’re not Draconian and now we’re getting hauled into court. She’s demanding that we pay her bills but she doesn’t want to live at home and she’s saying, ‘I don’t want to live under your rules.’ ”

Canning added that his daughter left home because she wouldn’t follow the house rules, including respectful behavior, obeying the curfew, returning “borrowed” items to her two sisters, doing a few chores, and thinking seriously about cutting off a boyfriend her parents has a bad influence on her. Sean Canning concluded, “We’re heartbroken, but what do you do when a child says ‘I don’t want your rules but I want everything under the sun and you to pay for it?’ ” He also stated that Rachel’s college fund is available to her.

Rachel has been living with the family of her best friend Jaime Inglesino. His father is attorney and former Morris County Freeholder John Inglesino, who is funding Rachel’s case.

Rachel Canning told the court that her parents jointly decided on Oct. 29, 2013 that as of Nov. 1, when she turned 18, she would be separated “from all support both financially and emotionally.” She said Morris Catholic advised her not to return home and contacted the state Division of Child Protection and Permanency (known as DCP&P and formerly as DYFS) because Rachel alleged her parents abused her. Morris Catholic President Michael St. Pierre acknowledged that the school did call DCP&P.

Sean Canning said that a DCP&P representative visited his home last fall, decided nothing abusive had happened, and felt Rachel was “spoiled,” concluding the a the investigation.

Rachel, an excellent student and a cheerleader, has already been accepted at the University of Vermont, William Paterson University, Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. Wells has offered a scholarship worth $20,000 a year.

Attorney Laurie Rush-Masuret, who represents the parents, joined Sean Canning in stating that Rachel was seeing a therapist before she left home and was supposed to take medication. The Cannings also said Rachel, was suspended twice from school, ignored the home curfew and bullied her younger sister. Rush-Masuret wrote to the court, “Mr. and Mrs. Canning did not tell Rachel to move out; rather they advised her that she is welcome home so long as she abides by their rules under their roof, which is completely reasonable. However, Rachel decided that she does not want to live within her parents’ sphere of influence and voluntarily moved out, essentially emancipating herself. Obviously, she cannot decide she will no longer live within her parents’ sphere of influence and simultaneously seek payment from them for support. ”

John Inglesino wrote the court that he and his wife, Amy, believe Rachel is “emotionally distraught by her parents’ sudden rejection of her....” He added,

“Rachel is likeable, communicates exceptionally well and is highly motivated to attend and excel at a college appropriate for her. That is why my wife and I have decided to fund this lawsuit. We know that if Mr. and Mrs. Canning are not required to fulfill their legal obligations as parents, that Rachel’s ability to fulfill her potential will be greatly diminished.”

Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region Weighs in On Report Showing Ontario’s Health System is Failing the Elderly

Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region (HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, is weighing in on a recent report showing that Ontario’s health system is failing the elderly and announcing how it can provide care to patients post-hospitalization.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) March 04, 2014

Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region (HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, is weighing in on a recent report showing that Ontario’s health system is failing the elderly and announcing how it can provide care to patients post-hospitalization.

According to a recent study, for nearly two decades, Ontario’s provincial government has downsized hospitals, cutting 19,000 beds and reducing access to in-hospital restorative care and rehabilitation therapies. The study also notes that Ontario has roughly four fewer healthcare workers per 1,000 residents, or 47,000 total fewer healthcare workers, than the rest of Canada. (Source: “Pushed Out of Hospital, Abandoned at Home! After Twenty Years of Budget Cuts, Ontario’s Health System is Failing Patients,” Ontario Council of Hospital Unions web site, February 27, 2014; http://www.ochu.on.ca/resources/Events/HOTLINE_REPORT_2014.pdf.)

“Not only are Ontarians not getting the healthcare support they need in the hospital, they are also not getting it at home under the outpatient community-based care model,” says Lester Fix, executive vice president of Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region. “The study alleges that those most affected by the cuts are the elderly, who are often discharged prematurely out of hospitals when still acutely ill or in need of in-hospital restorative care and therapies.”

Most recently, from 2004 and 2009, per-capital funding for home-care declined by 14%; this has resulted in one in six patients being readmitted to hospital within 30 days of being discharged. Overall, more than 10,000 Ontarians today are on a waiting list for some type of at-home health support and another 25,000 are waiting for a nursing home bed. (Source: Ibid.)

Fix explains that provincial governments across Canada are always looking for ways to cut spending, and in the current economic environment, it doesn’t appear as though hospitals or at-home health support is in line for huge budgetary increases.

“At Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region, we are committed to the well-being and safety of the clients we are privileged to serve,” he adds. “Many of our clients come to us following a hospitalization, having been referred by physicians, discharge planners, social workers, and case managers. We understand that the transition from hospital to home can be a challenging one for patients and their families.”

One of the leading causes of hospital readmission or slow post-hospitalization recovery, Fix observes, is the lack of proper support immediately following a hospital discharge. As the leading experts in post-hospitalization care, Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region can make the transition from hospital to at-home recovery as seamless as possible.

Fix notes that working with a personal Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region caregiver provides the individual customized attention, ranging from a few hours a day to around-the-clock care. Visiting therapists can also cater to the specific recovery needs of a client at home, providing customization not available at all rehabilitation facilities. For most seniors transitioning out of the hospital setting, home care is the solution that offers the greatest security and happiness for the client and the most peace of mind to his or her family.

“Those interested in transitioning to a homecare setting should consider speaking with a Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region care manager about the Transition Home™ package and a personalized care plan for their specific situation,” Fix concludes.

Serving Toronto, North York, York Region: Markham, Richmond Hill, Thornhill, Vaughan, Newmarket, Unionville, Township of King, Aurora, Woodbridge, Keswick, and Stouffville, Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region provides older adults with high-quality, consistent care, helping them live happier, healthier lives in the comfort of their home. In an effort to fully address its mobile and homebound clients’ lifestyle needs, Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region provides both hourly home care and live-in home care. Tea Tree Oil For Your Body: What You Need To Know

$

0
It seems that an essential oil craze has been sweeping the nation. You can't even mention coconut oil without hearing how many ways women and men use the product to relieve their bodily woes. So if coconut can have all its glory, it's about time we put the spotlight on another formula.

Tea tree oil is somewhat of a mystery to us. Sure, we've heard of it, but what does it really do? We talked to two dermatologists to investigate the good and the bad of the fragrant oil. Read on to find out what we learned.

*Tea tree oil actually has antibacterial properties.*

The component responsible for tea tree oil's bacteria-fighting abilities is "believed to be terpenes," explains Aurora DeJuliis, a dermatologist and aesthetician who runs the Aurora DeJuliis, MD European Medical Spa in New Jersey. "Terpenes is a type of volatile oil that has been shown to destroy bacteria."

*Tea tree oil is particularly good for you from the neck up.*

If you've heard that this essential oil could help treat acne, you've heard right. "Tea tree oil works on pimples because it has disinfecting and soothing properties," says Dr. DeJuliis. The oil penetrates the blockage between your skin and sebaceous glands and it's also good at "disinfecting the pores, and drying out whiteheads and blackheads," she says.

And get this: You can use tea tree oil in your hair. Dr. DeJuliis says that there are shampoos that have the oil in them to help fight dry and itchy scalps, but it's also able to combat your dandruff. Tea tree oil "is also effective in treating dandruff because of the different moisturizing properties of the oil," she explains.

But watch out, this is a liquid you want to keep far away from your mouth. Tea tree oil "is dangerous if taken by mouth. It can cause serious side effects such as confusion, inability to walk, unsteadiness, rash and coma," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Janet Prystowsky.

*The next time you have athlete's foot, give this oil a try.*

Tea tree oil is "useful in treating different fungal infections, such as athlete's foot, or fungal infections of the nail,” Dr. DeJuliis says. But just because tea tree oil can work on damaged nails, doesn't mean it works on other kinds of bacterial infections.

Dr. Prystowsky explains that many of tea tree oil's supposed benefits haven't actually been proven: "There is insufficient evidence for rating the effectiveness of tea tree oil for cold sores, allergic reactions in the skin to nickel, yeast infections in the mouth, throat and vaginal infections" or other issues like lice and ringworm, she says.

*People with sensitive skin might want to steer clear of tea tree oil.*

Both dermatologists point out that the essential oil could be harsh on sensitive skin types -- Dr. Prystowsky adds "anyone with a tendency for eczema should proceed cautiously when using tea tree oil." However, if you do want to try the oil, make sure to remember these key tips:

* Make sure to have a diluted solution on hand.*

"It is probably best to buy tea tree oil already in the dilution needed rather than mixing it yourself," Dr. Prystowsky advises. But there are some DIY ways that will help you make the oil less severe. "Add a couple drops to aloe vera gel, and then apply the gel to pimples or blemishes. You can also add a couple teaspoons of tea tree oil to raw organic honey." Another mixing oil on the list is jojoba, "because jojoba oil is very similar to the oil produced naturally by the skin."

Dr. DeJuliis even gave us the recipe for one of her favorite DIY face masks. (Because of the tomatoes in the ingredients, this is catered toward those with oilier, acne-prone skin that can handle the acid.)

*Dr. DeJuliis's Face Mask*

Ingredients:
3 drops of tea tree oil
1 tsp of jojoba oil
½ a finely chopped tomato

Instructions: Mix until you have a smooth paste and apply this mask to your face for 10 minutes. Then wash off.

* Or, just use an entirely different formula.*

Dr. DeJuliis recommends alternatives like lavender, geranium, manuka and rosemary oils that are gentler on the skin than tea tree, but perform just as well. But, if there is any doubt, Dr. Prystowsky tells us we should consult the professionals. "Consulting your physician/dermatologist would be the best way to determine what accepted medications may be appropriate for your [particular] condition." So if you're using oils or herbs as alternatives to traditional medicine, you should probably do your research.

We agree -- if you are nervous about using alternative remedies that include tea tree oil, try performing a patch test first on your inner arm. And of course, it's always in your best interest to first consult a doctor before starting any new skincare regimens. Reported by Huffington Post 11 hours ago.

Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc., the GTA’s Leading Pavement Maintenance Contractor, Announces Top Benefits of Preventative Pavement Maintenance

$

Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. (http://www.SureSealPavement.com), the Greater Toronto Area’s (GTA) leading pavement maintenance and repair company, is announcing its top benefits of preventative pavement maintenance.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) March 05, 2014

Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. (http://www.SureSealPavement.com), the Greater Toronto Area’s (GTA) leading pavement maintenance and repair company, is announcing its top benefits of preventative pavement maintenance.

“The harsh cold snaps that were followed by thawing temperatures in the GTA have caused more than their fair share of potholes,” says Lance Bradshaw, president and CEO of Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. “In fact, Toronto is dealing with more than twice as many potholes over last year.” (Source: Lewkowicz, J., “Potholes Costing City Double,” Newstalk 1010 web site, February 18, 2014; http://www.newstalk1010.com/news/2014/02/18/potholes-costing-city-double.)

Unfortunately, Bradshaw says, many roads, streets, parking lots, and driveways in the GTA went into the winter with unrepaired cracks and potholes from previous years. In fact, some sections are so full of potholes and cracks that they will probably need to be totally rebuilt.

“Reactive maintenance is costly and it isn’t working. Since January 1, the city has fixed 33,000 potholes at a cost of $620,000; last year at this time, the city had repaired 14,000 potholes at a cost of $360,000,” he adds. “To keep up with the growing problems facing roads, driveways, and parking lots, cities and property owners need to take a proactive, preventative approach to pavement and pothole maintenance.”

“Preventative pavement maintenance,” Bradshaw explains, can mean a number of different things, from simple cleaning or restriping to fixing severely distressed washouts or potholes. Based on the approach, an emphasis on preventative pavement maintenance can include pavement preservation (a long-term, cost-effective strategy to extend pavement life and improve safety), pavement rehabilitation (structural enhancements that extend the service life), and pavement reconstruction (replacing the entire pavement structure).

“Developing a preventative pavement maintenance program not only saves money, but it can double or even triple the life of the investment,” he notes. “Because subgrade moisture is one of the leading causes of pavement failure, crack sealing helps prevent moisture penetration and is the most cost-effective way to maintain asphalt and prevent further damage.”

As the Toronto weather gets warmer and the asphalt paving season begins, Bradshaw warns consumers that they need to be careful when choosing a contractor to repair or maintain their driveway or parking lot. For starters, consumers should deal with a contractor who has deep roots and a proven track record in the local community. On top of that, a reputable pavement maintenance and repair company will use the most advanced techniques and stand behind their work.

“Our 20-plus years of experience has taught us that PolyTar is the most durable, cost-effective commercial grade pavement coating in North America,” Bradshaw concludes. “It not only seals and protects asphalt, protecting it from destructive elements, including the weather, the sun, and petroleum, but it also enhances curb appeal and, when used as part of a preventative pavement maintenance program, can reduce life cycle costs by an average of 50%.”

Sure Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. is a 20-year-old pavement maintenance contractor that services commercial, industrial, retail, office, and corporate property owners and managers throughout the Ontario region. The company provides both new construction and repair of asphalt pavement surfaces, including parking lots and roadways. With their headquarters in Brampton and an operations facility in Toronto, Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. serves the Greater Toronto Area, including Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Barrie, Markham, Newmarket, Aurora, Oakville, Burlington, Milton Richmond Hill, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa.
