The Label Printers Introduces Take Stock For Education

0
0
The Label Printers has introduced a program titled Take Stock For Education by inviting teachers from the West Aurora (IL) school district to an Open House featuring printing materials that teachers can repurpose for their classrooms.

The Label Printers has just introduced a program that fits the goals of their “Go Green, Save Green, and Earn Green” sustainability program, and at the same time, provides much-needed teaching materials support to local school districts.

The company invited teachers from nearby USD 129 (principally West Aurora, IL) to come to their plant and choose from any of the available materials that The Label Printers could not use in manufacturing (such as cores, label stock and laminates, oversize papers, and miscellaneous office supplies).

Chief of Operations Lori Campbell suggested the idea to the “Sustainability Team” after a visit to a supplier’s facility. She says, “I got the inspiration from FLEXcon during a plant tour. I mentioned it to George [Tommasi - team leader] upon my return and thought we should be able to offer something along the same lines...next thing I knew we had an Open House!”

Tommasi explained, “The Take Stock for Education program offers a variety of materials, some of which will be used with students, others may be used to decorate classrooms or as office supplies for teachers in fulfilling the administrative aspects of their positions. These materials will not only help teachers provide a more enriched learning environment but they also save the school district critical financial resources. We are happy to have been able to help teachers and students and we look forward to expanding this program to additional school districts and offering many open houses in the future.”

Gina Ries and Dawn Tesch, members of the “Sustainability Team” were equally pleased to have been able to help teachers and students. Says Ries, “In the past, all of this material would have gone to landfills. And, even since we began our L.I.F.E. program, they would have been recycled or gone into the waste to energy program. But it’s nice that these materials can be put to an alternate, good use in a classroom. I think it’s great, not only to give back to the community but [that] they help us achieve our goal of reducing waste.” “The teachers were very appreciative,” added Tesch. “They said they don’t get offers - or Open House invitations - like this very often.”

Adds Campbell, “I’m really glad we were able to do this in our community and I hope we can continue the practice. It keeps in line with our spirit of re-use and re-cycle and helps our local schools. At a time when school budget cuts are the topic du jour, it’s important for the business community to find inventive ways of helping out.”

Purchase of New Coroner Vehicle Delayed Patch Yorkville, IL --

A procedural error prevented Kendall County officials from purchasing a new vehicle for the Kendall County Coroner's office, the Aurora Beacon News reported.

The vehicle in question, a sport utility vehicle equipped with an additional $3,000 - $4,000 in new equipment, would cost the county a base price of approximately $37,000. However, because the cost was above $30,000 the county needed to solicit bids for the vehicle -- something they failed to do. The motion was tabled until requests for proposals can be sent out, the Aurora Beacon News said.

The coroner currently uses a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban with 124,000 miles. Coroner Ken Toftoy reported the vehicle has been having mechanical issues, including a steering problem. Reported by Patch 16 hours ago.

Sex Offender in Batavia Store Incident Pleads Guilty

Sex Offender in Batavia Store Incident Pleads Guilty Patch Geneva, IL --

A 57-year-old man with a history of sex offenses will serve a prison term for exposing and fondling himself in a Batavia retail store in December 2012, and for failing to register with Aurora police as a sex offender.

James E. Rozema of Aurora on Wednesday agreed to a sentence of four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to one count of public indecency, a Class 4 felony, and one count of failing to register as a sex offender, a Class 2 felony. The Kane County State's Attorney's Office announced the sentence in a news release.

A Class 4 felony is usually punishable by probation or between one and three years in prison. However, because Rozema had been convicted of felony public indecency in the prior 10 years, and because he had been previously convicted of failing to register as a sex offender, he was eligible for extended-term sentencing.

Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles accepted the plea.

At about 1:30 p.m. Dec. 20, 2012, Rozema entered a business in the 300 block of Randall Road in Batavia and exposed and fondled himself within the view of other customers. When confronted, Rozema left the store.

Witnesses later identified Rozema as the offender through a photo lineup. When contacted by police, Rozema acknowledged that he had been in the store at the time of the incident.

Later, on Dec. 20, 2012, Rozema went to the Aurora Police Department to register as a sex offender as required by law because of his prior sex offenses. However, an investigation revealed that Rozema had not registered since changing his address in October 2012.

A warrant for Rozema was issued and he was taken into custody.

Rozema will serve four years for each count. The sentences are to be served concurrently.

According to Illinois law, Rozema is eligible for day-for-day sentencing. He was given credit for 37 days served in the Kane County jail. Reported by Patch 11 hours ago.

The northern lights can be seen on dark, clear nights when charged solar particles strike the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. Because of a predicted peak in a solar cycle, this year and next year are expected to offer prime viewing for the elusive phenomenon. [...] Alaska's tourism industry is gearing up for thousands of visitors like Carter — including jet loads from Japan — who are willing to wait outside in freezing weather, often for hours past midnight, in hopes of catching a once-in-a-lifetime glimpse of the lights. Because of the solar max, this was the year to do it. If you compound that with the fact that aurora activity tends to become more common around autumnal and vernal equinoxes, the start of spring in March could be quite hectic for Fairbanks. "Because of the buzz of the aurora blasts we definitely think it's gotten more attention from the media," said Deb Hickok, the president and CEO of the Fairbanks Visitor Bureau and Convention Center. Trauma, Crisis Experts Will Testify Before Sandy Hook Commission Patch Newtown, CT --

In their mission to find responses to the Dec. 14 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission has heard from governors, police insiders and educators.

On Friday, they'll hear testimony from eight experts from Connecticut and across the nation, representing a wide spectrum of experience on issues of mental health, trauma and responding to the kind of unprecedented crises Newtown faced after the shooting.

Four commissioners from Connecticut state departments will testify before the board:

· Patricia Rehmer, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services
· Joette Katz, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families
· Stefan Pryor, Commissioner of the Department of Education
· Jewel Mullen, Commissioner of the Department of Public Health

Two public school system officials from Aurora, CO will join testimony: Superintendent John Barry and school recovery coordinator Francis Pombar. The Aurora community suffered a similar tragedy in July 2012 when a shooter killed 12 and injured 58 in a movie theatre.

In January, Gov. Dannel Malloy formed the commission, chaired by Hamden Mayor Scott Jackson, to eventually make legislative recommendations on safety, gun violence prevention and mental health. The commission convened with testimony from former Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter and University of Virginia law professor Richard Bonnie. Gov. Malloy has recommended the commission finish its work by June. Reported by Patch 5 hours ago.

Metra CEO Apologizes for Recent BNSF Line Delays Patch La Grange, IL --

Metra CEO Alex Clifford issued an apology to customers yesterday after riders faced recent delays on Metra's BNSF line, which runs through Naperville, Lisle and Aurora.

*Earlier: Metra Passengers Get Delayed After Train Doors Fail to Close*

In a letter posted on Metra's website and sent via email to customers, Clifford said Metra is taking the delays "seriously" and "working with BNSF Railway to address them."

"We and BNSF do everything we can to minimize delays and provide you with reliable service," Clifford said in a statement. "I recognize these delays were frustrating, and I apologize for the inconvenience you experienced."

Last week, a Metra train was stopped for about an hour and a half at the Naperville station, 105 E. 4th Ave., after several doors on the train failed to close.

On Monday evening, a total of 13 BNSF trains were delayed 8 to 56 minutes due to a power failure, which was caused by a blown fuse. Then, on Tuesday evening, 16 BNSF trains were delayed due to an incident involving signals at Chicago's Union Station.

The statement from Clifford reads:

Dear BNSF Riders,

Metra would like to apologize for delays on the BNSF line in recent days and assure you that we take them seriously and are working with BNSF Railway to address them.

On Friday morning, inbound train No. 1252 was delayed for about 75 minutes due to a door malfunction at Naperville. The door circuitry cable was damaged by striking debris, disrupting the circuit and preventing the doors from operating properly. We had to send a relief train from Chicago Union Station to accommodate the passengers on 1252.

On Monday evening, BNSF had a total of 13 trains delayed 8 to 56 minutes due to a power failure at the Downers Grove Fairview interlocker, which was caused by a blown fuse. The area is a major switching point used to route express runs around locals during the evening rush hour, and all the switches had to be operated manually, which greatly slowed progress through the area.

On Tuesday evening, 16 BNSF trains were delayed, most of them from 15 to 30 minutes, due to an incident involving signals at Chicago Union Station.

We and BNSF do everything we can to minimize delays and provide you with reliable service. I recognize these delays were frustrating, and I apologize for the inconvenience you experienced.

VIDEO: Biden Honors Newtown Victims, Calls for Tighter Gun Control Laws

VIDEO: Biden Honors Newtown Victims, Calls for Tighter Gun Control Laws Patch East Haven, CT --

Standing before an audience of local, state and federal officials, Vice President Joe Biden delivered a stirring keynote address at a conference on gun violence that included family members of the 26 victims of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“My heart goes out to you,” Biden said, noting that he met with several family members of the victims directly before his address and intended to meet with more afterwards. “I deeply, deeply admire your courage. This is not easy for you… to just be in this room.”

The vice president, who served as the main speaker during a gun violence forum at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury on Thursday spoke about how he never had the courage that Newtown families had.

Having lost a daughter and wife in a car accident over three decades ago, Biden said he didn’t have the courage to do what these Newtown parents who lost their own children on Dec. 14 are doing — facing the tragedy.

“We can’t remain silent,” Biden said, his voice growing more audible throughout the WestConn community center, a handful of miles away from Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“We have to speak for all of those voices. We have to speak for those 20 beautiful children who died 65 days ago. We have to speak for those six adults who died protecting them,” he said.

From there, the discussion turned to legislation and initiatives the federal government could take to help reduce gun violence, including implanting universal background checks, federal gun trafficking statutes and banning high-capacity magazines.

Biden said that lawmakers need to show political courage in enacting sensible gun reforms and taking on the a “third rail of politics.”

"People say and you read and people write about the political risks (of gun control) and why they're unacceptable to take on," Biden said. "I say it's unacceptable not to take this on…and I say to my colleagues who will watch this and listen to this, I say to you if you're concerned about your political survival you should be concerned about the survival of our children."

"America has changed on this issue," Biden said. "We all know the American people are with us…you all should know there's a moral price to pay for inaction."

Biden said a ban on assault weapons had nothing to do with the Second Amendment, and there was no way to argue that a weapon like the AR-15 - one of the guns that Adam Lanza used in the Newtown shootings - was intended for self-defense or recreation.

"They say assault weapons like the AR-15 are needed for self-protection and recreation," he said. "They are not. There's plenty of ways you can protect yourself and recreate without an AR-15."

Here are the gun control measures Biden said that he and President Barack Obama support:

· *Universal background checks: *Every buyer needs to be vetted for the purchase of a firearm, as Biden said that 46 percent of guns purchased now don’t require background checks.
· *Improved records to allow states to track felons: *There is no national database tracking those who served jail time or are not permitted to possess firearms. Biden suggested instituting such a system so that if a convicted felon from Montana tries to buy a gun in Connecticut, that person’s felony status will come up during the purchasing process.
· *Eliminating high-capacity magazines that hold 30-100 rounds: *Biden said there is “no rational reason why someone would need to carry a 100-round drum like the Aurora shooter carried.”
· *Federal gun trafficking statutes:  *“Making sure prosecutors can go after the so-called straw purchases," Biden said.
· *Increasing mental health services:* Biden said this should especially be for young people between ages 16 and 25, who are “the most vulnerable to mental health problems.”
· *More sworn law enforcement officers on the streets.*
· *Studying what effects violent videogames and media has on youth*. Reported by Patch 8 minutes ago.

Mother Of Mass Shooting Victim Blasts 'Appalling' McCain Move

0
0
Caren Teves, mother of a victim of the Aurora, Colo., mass shooting in July, said Thursday that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) had responded reprehensibly to her gun control question earlier in the day, when he told her that she needed some "straight talk."

Teves' son, Alex, was 24 years old when he was gunned down alongside 11 others inside a movie theater. On Thursday, Teves, of Phoenix, attended a town hall held by McCain with hopes of encouraging the senator to support an assault weapons ban, which would restrict the sale of weapons such as the semi-automatic rifle used by the Aurora shooter.

McCain responded sharply to Teves' attempt to push the legislation.

"I can tell you right now you need some straight talk. That assault weapons ban will not pass the Congress of the United States," McCain said, drawing cheers from the crowd.

In an interview with Talking Points Memo, Teves expressed disappointment in the way McCain handled her question.

“I was very surprised that a senator, who has been in office for over 30 years, would address a grieving mother, who just lost her son exactly seven months prior -- yesterday was the 20th, I lost my son on 7-20-2012 -- to tell me that I needed ‘some straight talk,’” Teves told TPM.

Teves also said she was "surprised" at the continued indifference McCain and his staff had shown her, both at the town hall event and in response to a previous attempt she had made to reach out to the senator.

“It takes a lot for me to just get out of bed every morning," Teves said. "I mean, this is still so new and so fresh, that my son was murdered. And I just expected a little more respect from someone who’s been in office over 30 years, and his staff. Between that and the form letter that we received, it’s just, it’s appalling.”

In the wake of the Aurora shooting, McCain appeared to suggest that he'd be open to discussing the merits of an assault weapons ban. When such a bill was revamped and introduced after December's school massacre in Newtown, Conn., however, McCain took a more rigid tone, saying that it would have no chance of passing in Congress.

McCain came under fire from constituents on both sides of the spectrum in sessions held during the congressional recess. On Tuesday, McCain was forced to defend his position on comprehensive immigration reform to a number of disgruntled voters who pushed back with extreme views on undocumented immigrants.
