Passengers On Ship Trapped Off Antarctica To Be Rescued

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Passengers on board a research ship that has been trapped in Antarctic ice for more than a week are expected to be rescued by helicopter on Thursday after three icebreakers failed to reach the paralyzed vessel, officials said.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority's (AMSA) Rescue Coordination Centre, which is handling the operation, said early Thursday that weather conditions had improved in the area since Wednesday and rescue flights were likely to commence shortly. "Wind in the area is now down to 10 knots (19 kmh) and visibility has improved. Weather conditions are expected to remain favorable over the next 36 hours," the center said in a statement.

The 74 scientists, tourists and crew on the Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy, which has been stuck since Christmas Eve, had been hoping the Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis would be able to crack through the thick ice and allow them to continue on their way. The Aurora came within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of the ship Monday, but fierce winds and snow forced it to retreat to open water.

The helicopter on board the Chinese-flagged vessel Snow Dragon will be used to rescue 52 scientists and tourists, a dozen at a time, over five hours. All 22 crew members are expected to stay with their icebound vessel, which is not in danger.

The center said the passengers will be flown 11 kilometers (7 miles) to the Chinese ship, from where they will be transported 4 kilometers (2 miles) by barge to the Australian icebreaker.

The Snow Dragon, which is waiting with the Aurora at the edge of the ice pack, was also unable to crack through the ice, as was France's L'Astrolabe.

The Akademik Shokalskiy, which left New Zealand on Nov. 28, got stuck Christmas Eve after a blizzard pushed the sea ice around the ship, freezing it in place about 2,700 kilometers (1,700 miles) south of Hobart, Tasmania. The ship isn't in danger of sinking and has weeks' worth of supplies on board, but it cannot move.

The scientific team on board had been recreating Australian explorer Douglas Mawson's 1911 to 1913 voyage to Antarctica. Expedition leader Chris Turney had hoped to continue the trip if an icebreaker managed to free the ship. Reported by Huffington Post 2 days ago.

Helicopter Rescue for Global Warming Ship Trapped in Icy Antarctic

Helicopter Rescue for Global Warming Ship Trapped in Icy Antarctic The ironic fate of the Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy, which has been stuck in the Antarctic ice since Christmas Eve, may soon be resolved by a helicopter rescue.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority's (AMSA) Rescue Coordination Centre, supervising the rescue, said early Thursday that rescue flights would likely begin soon.

As National Geographic admitted, the mission of the scientists on board was to prove the validity of global warming by comparing the evidence they found with evidence from Australian explorer Douglas Mawson's 1911 to 1913 voyage to Antarctica. National Geographic wrote:

The current crop of explorers are hoping to document some of the same data and compare them to Mawson's numbers, "using the twist of modern technology," Turney told National Geographic earlier this month. As may be expected, global warming might play a role in this, he suggests, particularly with respect to melted ice in the East Antarctic.

The irony of a ship meant to document the validity of global warming getting trapped by the undiminishing ice of Antarctica is obvious.

Three icebreaking ships attempted to break through the ice: the Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis, the Chinese-flagged vessel Snow Dragon, and France's L'Astrolabe. The Snow Dragon’s helicopter on board is planning to rescue 52 scientists and tourists, a dozen at a time, over a five-hour time period. The trapped ship's 22 crew members will stay with the ship, as there is no danger of its sinking and plenty of food for the duration.

Chris Turney, the leader of the trapped expedition, had claimed that the ice shelf of Antarctica was shrinking for some time; even after the ship was trapped in the ice, Fox News reported Turney “...remained adamant that sea ice is melting, even as the boat remained trapped in frozen seas."

There are some problems with Turney’s scenario. NASA's satellites have measured global temperatures for 35 years, including in the Antarctic, and found that the southern polar region temperatures have cooled -0.04°C/century. Not only that, but the Antarctic sea ice has grown to a record total.

The Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) issued a press release that indicated “sea ice in the Southern Ocean has reached the highest extent in the last decades. It was only in the mid-1970s that a similar sea ice extent had been observed.” The Cryosphere released a paper stating that Antarctica has been gaining surface ice and snow accumulation for the last 150+ years.

Rescue Finally Emerges For Those Stranded On Ship In Antarctica

*redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports - Your Universe Online*

The 52 passengers of a research vessel stranded in Antarctic ice for more than a week have been rescued by helicopter and transported to a nearby Australian icebreaker, CNN.com and other media outlets are reporting.

“It's 100% we're off! A huge thanks to all,” tweeted University of New South Wales climate change professor Chris Turney, one of the scientists and tourists who had been trapped on the MV Akademik Shokalskiy since Christmas Eve, according to CNN’s Jethro Mullen.

Rescue efforts were spearheaded by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority's Rescue Coordination Centre. The 22 crew members will remain on the Russian-flagged research ship until the ship can be freed from the ice and piloted home. The vessel is in no danger of sinking and is said to be stocked with several weeks’ worth of supplies.

The first group was transported to “an ice floe next to the Australian icebreaker the Aurora Australis, and then taken by a small boat to the Australian ship,” where the first group arrived at roughly 6:15pm Australian time, explained to Associated Press (AP) reporter Rod McGuirk.

The MV Akademik Shokalskiy had been trapped in thicker-than-expected ice approximately 100 nautical miles east of the French base Dumont d'Urville since December 24, according to AFP. Several icebreakers tried and failed to reach the stranded vessel, and a helicopter rescue originally planned for Tuesday had to be delayed due to heavy rains, wind and poor sea ice conditions.

AMSA representative John Young told CNN's Mullen that it will take several weeks before the rescued researchers and passengers will see dry land, however. They are headed for the Australian port of Hobart, but the vessel will need to complete a resupply mission at a base in Antarctica before it can leave the region. Young told reporters that the 52 men and women will likely reach Hobart by mid-January.

In a December 31 blog entry, Turney called the experience of being stranded in the Antarctic ice a “sobering” one. He also called the international rescue efforts “extraordinary” and said that he and his colleagues were “incredibly grateful for all the hard work and effort everyone has provided to assist the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 2013-14 in escaping.”

“The conditions we are experiencing over the Shokalskiy are a result of the frequent and deep low pressure systems that encircle the continent. In combination with a funneling effect from the ice sheet, these lows are producing strong and pervasive winds from the southeast,” he explained.

“The wind is not unusual but what is unexpected is the major reconfiguration of thick multi-year sea ice to the east of the Mertz Glacier. The thick chaotic surface we see around the Shokalskiy is consistent with the idea that this ice is several years old and is considerably more difficult to break through by icebreaker than single year ice,” the professor added.

Turney concluded by noting that morale was “good” and everyone was “working hard to support one another.” Reported by redOrbit 1 day ago.

Akademik Shokalski Trapped: Rescue Begins For Passengers On Ship Stuck In Antarctic Ice

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A long-awaited rescue of passengers on board a research ship that has been trapped in Antarctic ice for more than a week finally got underway on Thursday, with a helicopter scooping up the first group of passengers and flying them to a nearby vessel, expedition leaders said.

The helicopter was originally going to airlift the passengers to a Chinese icebreaker, the Snow Dragon, with a barge then ferrying them to an Australian vessel. But sea ice was preventing a barge from reaching the Snow Dragon, and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority's Rescue Coordination Centre, which is overseeing the rescue, said the operation would consequently be delayed. A last-minute change in plans allowed the rescue to go ahead. The 52 scientists and tourists on board were instead being flown to an ice floe next to the Australian icebreaker the Aurora Australis, and then taken by a small boat to the Australian ship, expedition leader Chris Turney said. The maritime authority confirmed the first group arrived at the Aurora Thursday evening.

"I think everyone is relieved and excited to be going on to the Australian icebreaker and then home," Turney told The Associated Press by satellite phone from the Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalski, which has been stuck in the ice since Christmas Eve.

The helicopter will carry the passengers a dozen at a time in an operation expected to take five hours. All 22 crew members are planning to stay with their icebound vessel, which is not in danger.

The Aurora will carry the passengers to the Australian island state of Tasmania, arriving by mid-January.

The eagerly anticipated rescue came after days of failed attempts to reach the ship. Blinding snow, strong winds, fog and thick sea ice forced rescuers to turn back time and again.

Three icebreakers were initially dispatched to try and crack their way through the ice surrounding the vessel, but all failed. The Aurora came within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of the ship Monday, but fierce winds and snow forced it to retreat to open water.

The Akademik Shokalskiy, which left New Zealand on Nov. 28, got stuck after a blizzard pushed the sea ice around the ship, freezing it in place about 2,700 kilometers (1,700 miles) south of Hobart, Tasmania. The ship isn't in danger of sinking and has weeks' worth of supplies on board, but it cannot move.

The scientific team on board had been recreating Australian explorer Douglas Mawson's 1911 to 1913 voyage to Antarctica. Turney had hoped to continue the trip if an icebreaker managed to free the ship.

Modern-style Firefox for Windows 8 pushed back to March

Mozilla is making Windows 8 users wait a couple months longer for a modern-style version of Firefox.

The touch-optimized browser had been set to launch on January 21, with the release of Firefox 27; now Mozilla is pushing back touch optimization to Firefox 28, a delay of six weeks. Add in the two-week vacation that Mozilla decided to grant employees last month, and the projected release date is now March 18.

Mozilla has been working on a modern-style version of Firefox for almost two years, and has even released experimental versions of the browser as part of its nightly builds. But development has been repeatedly delayed, and last fall Mozilla wasn’t even certain whether it would release the modern-style version.

“Whether or not the Metro Preview Release will graduate from Aurora to Beta and Release channels is still to be determined,” Mozilla said in notes from a planning meeting in September. It’s unclear whether this attitude has changed, but for now, Mozilla is aiming at a February 4 beta release before launching the stable version in mid-March.

Chinese Icebreaker Involved In Antarctic Rescue Now Also Faces Trouble

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — An Australian icebreaker carrying 52 passengers who were retrieved from an icebound ship in the Antarctic was told to halt its journey home on Friday after concerns that a Chinese vessel involved in the dramatic rescue may also become stuck in the heavy sea ice.

The icebreaker Aurora Australis had been slowly cracking through thick ice toward open water after a Chinese helicopter on Thursday plucked the passengers from their stranded Russian research ship and carried them to the Aurora. But on Friday afternoon, the crew of a Chinese icebreaker that had provided the helicopter said they were worried about their own ship's ability to move through the ice. The Aurora — which was carrying the passengers to the Australian island state of Tasmania — was told to stay in the area in case the Chinese icebreaker Snow Dragon needs help, according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority's Rescue Coordination Centre, which oversaw the rescue.

The Snow Dragon, which is at the edge of the ice pack surrounding the Russian vessel, will attempt to push through the ice to open water early Saturday, when tidal conditions are most favorable. The Aurora is waiting around 11 kilometers (7 miles) north of the Snow Dragon, said Lisa Martin, spokeswoman for the marine authority.

Authorities have not said what the next step would be if the Snow Dragon became stuck, but it is possible that the Aurora will utilize its icebreaking capabilities to assist the Chinese vessel.

The maritime authority said the decision to place the Aurora on standby was a precaution and noted there was no danger to anyone on board the Snow Dragon. But it was yet another wrinkle in the highly complex rescue operation of those on board the Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy, which got stuck in the ice on Christmas Eve.

A spot of clear weather on Thursday finally allowed the multinational rescue operation after blinding snow, strong winds and thick sea ice forced rescuers to turn back time and again.

The twin-rotor helicopter, which is based on the Snow Dragon, took seven hours to carry the scientists and tourists in groups of 12 from the Russian ship to the Aurora. Earlier, the passengers had linked arms and stomped out a landing site in the snow next to the Russian ship for the helicopter.

Helicopter pilot Jia Shuliang told China's official Xinhua News Agency that he had no way of knowing whether the ice could withstand the helicopter's weight.

The rescue came in the never-ending daylight of summer after days of failed attempts to reach the vessel.

"I think everyone is relieved and excited to be going on to the Australian icebreaker and then home," expedition leader Chris Turney told The Associated Press by satellite phone from the Antarctic.

Sydney resident Joanne Sim, a paying passenger, wept as she boarded the Australian icebreaker. She said the passengers had spent their time watching movies and playing games.

"It really has been an emotional rollercoaster," she told a reporter from The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper who is aboard the ship.

The 22 crew members of the Akademik Shokalskiy stayed with the icebound vessel, which is not in any danger and has enough supplies on board to last for weeks. They will wait until the ice surrounding the ship breaks up, which could take several weeks, ASMA Emergency Response Division manager John Young said.

"Only now am I sort of feeling a bit emotional about leaving the Shokalskiy," Alok Jha, a journalist from The Guardian who is traveling with the Akademik Shokalskiy, said in a video shot before he boarded the helicopter. "The poor old thing is stuck still."

The cost of the rescue would be carried by the owners of the ships and their insurers, in accordance with international conventions on sea rescues, Young said.

Any official inquiry into how the ship got stuck would have to be conducted by Russia, he said.

The Akademik Shokalskiy, which left New Zealand on Nov. 28, got stuck after a blizzard pushed the sea ice around the ship, freezing it in place about 2,700 kilometers (1,700 miles) south of Hobart, Tasmania. The scientific team on board the Russian vessel had been recreating Australian explorer Douglas Mawson's 1911 to 1913 voyage to Antarctica.

Audio-Digest Foundation announces the release of Pediatrics Volume 59, Issue 30: Review of Pertussis/Neonatal Infections.

The goals of this program are to improve outcomes and management of pertussis and neonatal HIV and herpes simplex virus infections. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:

1. Educate families on the importance of pertussis vaccination to decrease the incidence of infection.
2. Detect infection with Bordetella pertussis early and provide prophylaxis for close contacts to prevent the spread of infection.
3. Select the appropriate diagnostic testing regimen for newborns exposed to HIV.
4. Manage infants who test positive for HIV.
5. Choose the optimal treatment algorithm and subsequent prophylaxis for infants exposed to herpes simplex virus.

The original programs were presented by Ann-Christine (Chris) Nyquist, MD, MSPH, Professor of Pediatrics, Sections of Infectious Disease and Epidemiology; Associate Dean, Diversity and Inclusion, University of Colorado School of Medicine; and Medical Director, Infection Prevention and Control and Occupational Health, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Aurora. Jessica N. Snowden, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, Omaha.
