Rescue Underway For Russian Ship Trapped By Antarctic Ice

Rescue Underway For Russian Ship Trapped By Antarctic Ice Three icebreaking ships were Thursday hurrying to reach a Russian vessel carrying 74 people on a scientific expedition which is trapped by ice off Antarctica, with Australian authorities coordinating the rescue mission.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said the MV Akademik Shokalskiy sent a distress message on Wednesday to say it was stuck about 100 nautical miles east of the French base Dumont D'Urville.

"The ship was starting to head out (to the open ocean) when the blizzard hit," expedition spokesman Alvin Stone told AFP.

"It's just stuck in ice. There's no danger at all."

The ship is in the Australian search and rescue region, prompting authorities to issue a broadcast to icebreaking vessels in the area and three with icebreaking capability have responded.

The three, which include the Australian Antarctic Division's Aurora Australis, are en route to the area with a Chinese-flagged vessel expected to reach the trapped ship first late Friday.

AMSA said the mission to reach the ship could be difficult.

"It's quite windy and there could be some sort of blizzard conditions," Andrea Hayward-Maher told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"Weather conditions, if they become difficult, could hinder the options that we have.

"But hopefully those icebreaking vessels will be able to get there as soon as they possibly can to render assistance."

The group on board the Russian ship are scientists and tourists recreating the historic voyage of explorer Sir Douglas Mawson to Antarctica a century ago.

They have been replicating the scientific experiments his team conducted during the 1911-1914 Australian Antarctic Expedition -- the pre-eminent scientific expedition of its time to South Polar regions.

It is not known whether the ship, which is stranded just three kilometres (two miles) from open ocean, will continue with its scientific experiments once it is freed or head back to New Zealand where it had been due to arrive on January 6.

Stone said the mood on board appeared to be normal as they waited for an icebreaker to reach them.

"They have been celebrating Christmas," he said.

President Obama's new normal: the drone strikes continue | Amy Goodman

Americans abhor mass shootings in our communities, but why do we allow our government to kill so many innocents abroad?

There has been yet another violent attack with mass casualties. This was not the act of a lone gunman, or of an armed student rampaging through a school. It was a group of families en route to a wedding that was killed. The town was called Radda – not in Colorado, not in Connecticut, but in Yemen. The weapon was not an easy-to-obtain semiautomatic weapon, but missiles fired from US drones.

On Thursday, 12 December, 17 people were killed, mostly civilians. The London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism has consistently tracked US drone attacks, recently releasing a report on the six months following President Barack Obama's major address on drone warfare before the National Defense University (NDU) last May. In that speech, Obama promised that "before any strike is taken, there must be near-certainty that no civilians will be killed or injured – the highest standard we can set." The BIJ summarized:

Six months after President Obama laid out US rules for using armed drones, a Bureau analysis shows that covert drone strikes in Yemen and Pakistan have killed more people than in the six months before the speech.

In a nation that abhors the all-too-routine mass killing in our communities, why does our government consistently kill so many innocents abroad?

One significant problem with assessing the US drone-warfare program is its secrecy. US officials rarely comment on the program, less so about any specific attack, especially where civilian deaths occur. As Obama admitted in the speech, "There's a wide gap between US assessments of such casualties and nongovernmental reports. Nevertheless, it is a hard fact that US strikes have resulted in civilian casualties." The BIJ's estimate of the death toll from US drone strikes during the past 12 years in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia is well over 4,000.

While the US media shower attention on the hypothetical prospects that in the next few years, Amazon.com will deploy clever little drones to deliver your holiday orders, it is important to take a hard look at what these airborne robots are actually doing now. "Democracy Now!" correspondent Jeremy Scahill has been exposing US covert warmaking for years, most recently in his book and film "Dirty Wars." The film was just shortlisted for an Oscar for best documentary. After the Academy Award nomination was made, he told us,

I hope that people pay attention to these stories, that Americans will know what happened to the Bedouin villagers in al-Majalah, Yemen, where three dozen women and children were killed in a US cruise missile strike that the White House tried to cover up.

In his NDU address, Obama said, "We act against terrorists who pose a continuing and imminent threat to the American people." Neither Obama nor any of his aides have explained just what kind of threat the wedding convoy presented to the American people. The government of Yemen, following local custom, made reparations to the victimized families, reportedly delivering 101 Kalashnikov rifles and a little over $100,000.

These rural villages in Yemen are caught in the middle of a violent conflict, as Human Rights Watch wrote in an October report titled "Between a Drone and al-Qaida." Just one month to the day before Obama gave his address at the NDU, Farea al-Muslimi, an eloquent young Yemeni man who spent a year attending a US high school, spoke before a congressional hearing. Six days before he testified, a drone strike hit his village of Wessab.

Farea said (pdf): "What Wessab's villagers knew of the US was based on my stories about my wonderful experiences here. ... Now, however, when they think of America, they think of the terror they feel from the drones that hover over their heads, ready to fire missiles at any time. What the violent militants had previously failed to achieve, one drone strike accomplished in an instant. There is now an intense anger against America in Wessab." He ended his testimony with the hope that "when Americans truly know about how much pain and suffering the US air strikes have caused ... they will reject this devastating targeted killing program."

The scenes of senseless violence in the US form a list of sorrow and loss: Columbine, Tucson, Aurora, Newtown, Littleton. With the ongoing work of committed activists, courageous journalists and responsible officials, perhaps Americans will recite as well the names Gardez, Radda, al-Majalah, Mogadishu and the many more sites of drone strikes still cloaked in secrecy.

Mortgage Rates Are Rising That Will Dilute Affordability

We offer free advice for those people who interested buy a house and property. You can contact any time when you feel free.In the event that mortgage rates come back to their memorable standard of 7 percent, stand out third of U.S. homes will remain reasonable, as per another report. At a 4.4 percent investment rate, the normal for a 30-year altered rate mortgage over the second from last quarter of the year, more than 70 percent of the nation's homes remained broker for a working class gang.

We recognize a mortgage broker when it fetches a property holder 28 percent or less of their month to month horrible wage, a standard general guideline for lodging brokenness.

"While most lodging markets still remain broker, climbing mortgage rates and climbing house costs in the course of recent months are making it all the more trying for the average family to buy a home without extending past their methods, particularly in the Northeast and along the Pacific Coast. Indeed with today's investment rates, just 36 percent of the West Coast is at present competitive. To bear the cost of a home, where the average cost topples $800,000, a mortgage holder needs to make at any rate $100,000 a year to agreeably manage the cost of a mortgage. Then, in Indianapolis, where the average cost is just $144,000, a mortgage holder should make just $56,000 a year to agreeably pay for a mortgage.

The economy is getting over on its own balance and doesn't have to depend on elected jolt as much. the normal 30-year altered rate mortgage in metro Atlanta rose to 4.54 percent most as of late, from 4.47 percent in the past report and 3.76 percent at the begin of 2013. The normal 15-year altered rate rose to 3.59 percent from 3.48 percent. Banks, who are paying out billions of dollars to settle claims they wrecked credits and wrongly dispossessed many borrowers, are confronting higher fetches in following new regulations intended to counteract the issues that accelerated the lodging emergencies. The due steadiness now incorporates checking seekers' vocation, wage and obligation commitments numerous times before shutting on a loan.

After some time, even broker regions will get crunched when investment rates climb.

At a 5 percent investment rate, with no progressions in pay or home costs, that number drops to 63 percent. At 6 percent interest, just 55 percent of homes might be broker and at the notable standard of 7 percent - just 35 percent are reasonable. When it comes to buying a new home, it is very important to consult several mortgage companies due to more competition. You can select one on the basis of their experience, quality service, and cost they charge from you.

Lakewood Ranch, Florida (PRWEB) December 26, 2013

Just shy of the end of 2013, Neal Communities has reached 800 home sales so far this year, a more than 32% increase from the 602 sales in all of 2012.

“We have had a strong year so far – 44% of our sales can be attributed to our ability to build and sell inventory homes, which are ready to move into immediately,” said Neal Communities’ Director of Sales, David Hunihan. “There is a scarcity for completed new homes in the market because most builders can’t afford to build them. This makes us optimistic for 2014 because we’re still 35% below where we should be for new home starts to keep up with household formation and demand,” said Hunihan.

Sales took place across sixteen communities from Manatee County to Lee County. Central Park at Lakewood Ranch and Grand Palm in Venice continued to be notable neighborhoods for Neal this year, with 156 sales so far this year at Central Park, and 138 sales so far this year at Grand Palm.

The Lakewood Ranch-based builder opened ten new communities in 2013, plus a new Southwest Florida Division in Lee and Collier Counties, helping to fuel record-breaking sales results all year.

“We expect to end this year with more sales than ever before in company history,” said Hunihan.

Neal Communities was named one of 2012's "America's Best Builders" by BUILDER Magazine and voted the “2013 Best Residential Builder in Southwest Florida” in a readers’ poll sponsored by Gulfshore Business Magazine. The company is ranked #1 locally by Metrostudy and by Hanley Wood Market Intelligence based on number of home sales and ranked #64 nationally among homebuilders by BUILDER Magazine. Video: Man Flying To NYC Spots Aurora Borealis Out Window Could you imagine being in a plane, gazing out your window into the sky, and spotting the Aurora Borealis, flickering its hazy green hue right in front of you? That is THE DREAM. And it happened to Paul Williams recently when he was flying from London to New York. Once he saw what was going on (which wasn't a total surprise to him, as he's a bit of an Aurora hunter and knew he may spot it while in flight), Williams "balanced my camera on a rucksack and left it snapping away out the window." He left with nearly 800 photos, which he put together in this video... at one point, a meteor shoots through the sky, because life is magic. [ more › ]

Exciting Laser Roadshow Brings Optics and Photonics Lessons to Even More Students in 2013

Laser Roadshow engages additional students in optical science following SPIE altruism vote.

Bellingham, Washington, USA (PRWEB) December 26, 2013

Students in New York, California, and Illinois recently benefitted from science lessons in the form of an informative, entertaining laser show, after a community vote on altruism spending by members and constituents of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

Show producer Prismatic Magic presents more than a dozen educational shows featuring lasers in schools across the U.S. each year with support from SPIE, as part of the society’s educational outreach mission.

In 2013, Prismatic Magic received an additional $2,500 from SPIE to present its Laser Roadshow after an open vote by members on how to allocate a portion of the non-for-profit’s philanthropic funds.

As a result, the Laser Roadshow was experienced by 1,650 more students via shows at The Scholars' Academy in Rockaway Park, New York; Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School in Oceanside, California; and Fred Rodgers Magnet Academy in Aurora, Illinois, in November and December.

The programs combine dynamic presentations, laser animations, and positively themed music in educational demonstrations of the science of lasers. The event includes a 20-minute introduction to laser science followed by a 40-minute laser show illustrating exciting developments in the fields of optics and photonics.

“I am well aware of the difficulties of trying to find an appropriate enrichment program that not only piques the interest of the student, but is also a genuine educational experience,” said Irene Dougherty, a former middle school teacher and parent of a sixth-grader at The Scholars’ Academy. “The show far exceeded any expectations. Our students were not only actively engaged, they were excited to learn.”

Students in Rockaway Park were impressed with the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) acronym, which helped them see how closely the fields work together, Dougherty said. She noted that the Laser Roadshow was the school’s first enrichment activity after the auditorium was damaged in Hurricane Sandy in October 2012.

Besides increasing general awareness of optics and photonics, the Laser Roadshow’s message includes a vocational element, said Chris Volpe, a Ph.D. physicist and president of Prismatic Magic.

“The message is, ‘You can grow up and do something like this, or even cooler, in optics and photonics,’ ” he said. “We're trying to reach these kids at a critical phase is their development and introduce an exciting career path option.”

Volpe said that he and his team find it very gratifying to hear from students, teachers, and parents that the roadshow has staying power. “Lasers and light continue to be an active topic of discussion both in the classroom and in the living room weeks after the event,” he said.

A recent report from the U.S. National Academies titled “Optics and Photonics, Essential Technologies for Our Nation” highlights the pervasiveness of optics and photonics technologies in everyday life, the substantial potential for economic growth, and the need to increase the number of STEM graduates to take on high-value jobs in the rapidly expanding fields.

The SPIE vote earlier this year channeling additional funds toward the Laser Roadshow also resulted in donations of:·     $10,000 to Child ViSion, an organization that helps the fight the impact of poor vision on the educational, quality of life and economic potential of young people by distributing self-adjustable glasses, based on a fluid-filled lens technology, through school-based programs in Africa

·     $2,500 to Active Learning in Optics and Photonics (ALOP) for workshops introducing basic optics and photonics concepts to teachers in developing countries by pairing theoretical modules with hands-on applications and using low-cost locally available materials. ALOP is supported on an ongoing basis by SPIE, ICTP (the International Centre for Theoretical Physics) and UNESCO.

SPIE provided $3.2 million in support of education and outreach programs in 2013, meeting both its educational mission as well as the desire of its members to give back to the community. SPIE members rate the ability to contribute to the optics and photonics community among the four most valuable benefits of membership in the society.

The deadline for the next round of SPIE Education Outreach Grants is 31 January.

More information about SPIE’s innovative resources for educators and students is online at http://www.spie.org/x30114.xml.

About SPIE

SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. The Society serves more than 235,000 constituents from approximately 155 countries, offering conferences, continuing education, books, journals, and a digital library in support of interdisciplinary information exchange, professional networking, and patent precedent. The Christmas holiday was extra merry for a veteran northern lights photographer, who captured yuletide auroras shimmering across the sky over Sweden's Abisko National Park.

The Christmas northern lights video was recorded by aurora photographer Chad Blakely recorded at 3 p.m. local time Wednesday (Dec. 25) after he heard about the celestial display from a guest.

"I immediately grabbed my camera gear and sped down to one of my favorite places in the ark to photograph the northern lights — the frozen shore of Lake Torneträsk," Blakely, of Lights Over Lapland, told SPACE.com in an email. "I quickly set up my camera and by 3:30 p.m. the sky was full of red and green auroras — the perfect colors for Christmas." Read more...
